Penn Manor educator selected for Google training program in Amsterdam

Every year, 150 educators from around the world are selected for the Google for Education Certified Innovator Program. The program is designed to recognize teachers who have a desire to benefit their classrooms and local communities with technology, in addition to building leadership skills and professional growth. Penn Manor School District technology trainer Judy Keller, better known to students and staff members as “the Google goddess,” was chosen as one of this year’s Certified Innovators. Keller flew to Amsterdam on Nov. 1 to complete a 12-month training program at the Google Academy.

Keller said she considered applying for the Certified Innovator Program for several years,

but she was waiting for the right time to take on such a large endeavor. Keller spent seven and a half months working on her application, which required her to present a challenge that is currently facing educators, including why it’s an important issue and how schools can approach it. Keller chose social media literacy for children as the focus of her project. “There’s almost nothing out there for younger kids to gain social media literacy,” Keller said. “I think a piece of the puzzle is missing.”

Keller had to approach her application carefully, as applicants who suggest a solution to the problem are not considered. The Google Academy uses a process called the Design Sprint, which involves a fast-paced environment where a small team of innovators collaborates to

It promotes health and growth and confidence. But Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster is also about stamina; it’s about finishing the race.

GOTR Lancaster is in the process of putting the wraps on another fall season. If participation and impact are any indications, the current season has been an overwhelming success.

“Girls participate in our program for every reason

imaginable,” said Jennifer West, co-founder of GOTR Lancaster. “They stick with it because it’s fun. Our program is a developmental program that focuses on the whole girl. The girls learn about who they are and how to make good choices. They learn how to be good friends and how to choose good friends.”

GOTR Lancaster will conclude its 10-week fall season on Sunday, Nov. 24, at Millersville University’s Pucillo Field,

Good

Services (GSS), a nonprofit organization that seeks to combat homelessness in Lancaster and Chester counties, recently celebrated the opening of a facility in downtown Lancaster that will offer housing for single mothers and their children experiencing a crisis. On Oct. 15, GSS held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly renovated building on North Lime Street,

As a technology trainer in Penn Manor School District, Judy Keller assists students and teachers with all things computers.

Local students receive scholarships

Delaney Reitnauer and Jordan Smith have been chosen to receive scholarships from the Tina Bresnahan College Scholarship Fund. Each of the students will receive a full scholarship covering all tuition and fees, providing them with the opportunity to pursue their academic and career goals.

Delaney is currently studying early childhood education at

Millersville University. She aspires to become a school psychologist, dedicated to teaching and counseling young students.

Jordan, a graduating senior from Penn Manor High School, plans to pursue a degree in education. He hopes to follow in Bresnahan’s footsteps, spreading the values of generosity and support.

The award is named in memory of Tina Bresnahan. To learn more about Bresnahan’s story and the scholarship, visit www.lancfound .org/fund/tina-bresnahan-col lege-scholarship-fund.

Community meal slated

Joseph’s Table at Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, will offer a takeout meal to members of the community on Thursday, Nov. 21.

Meals may be picked up from 5:30 to 6 p.m. There is no charge. Those who would like a meal should enter the parking lot from Penn Grant Road and exit onto Shiprock Road.

with a session-ending 5K fun run beginning at 2:30 p.m. More than 1,400 runners are expected to attend, including most of the GOTR Lancaster participants and members of their support teams, as well as community members.

The 5K fun run is open to the public, and runners can register at www.gotr lancaster.org up to and including the day of the event. GOTR is also seeking fun run volunteers for the event.

“It’s a day when girls, coaches and family members come out and celebrate the accomplishments of these 10 weeks,” said Jessica Wilson, GOTR Lancaster’s program and 5K fun run manager.

“There are a lot of cheer groups along the course, and it just makes it a really special day for the girls. Sometimes they’re running with their coaches, and sometimes they’re running with family members. The finish line is just a magical place. It’s emotional for all of us to watch them achieve their accomplishments.”

During the fall season, which began on Sept. 16, 650 girls in grades three through eight from all over Lancaster County and parts of Lebanon County participated in the GOTR Lancaster program. The GOTR program is designed for girls in third through fifth grades, while girls in sixth through eighth grades participate in Heart and Sole.

The 43 teams of participants, supported by more than 200 volunteer coaches, met twice a week within the boundaries of every Lancaster County public school district, at some county private schools and in the Leba -

non city, Cornwall-Lebanon, Eastern Lebanon County and Annville-Cleona school districts in Lebanon County. The meetings consisted of some sort of physical activity, including running; social and emotional curriculum; and varying forms of support.

“We have girls from all walks of life who have experienced all types of things at this point of life,” said Kylie Homan, GOTR Lancaster’s program director. “For these girls, now is when they’re really trying to understand themselves and how they fit into this world. Participating in Girls on the Run gives them the foundations to build strong relationships and life skills, not just for now, but into the future. We want girls to participate in any way they’re comfortable. There is research that suggests that a combination of physical activity and emotional support

is the best way to help the whole person.”

An international pro gram, GOTR was founded in Lancaster in 2009, with two teams and 25 girls. GOTR Lancaster expanded into Lebanon County in 2017, and to date the program has been used 22,000 times by about 12,000 girls.

“We thought this was something Lancaster was ready for,” said West. “We grew quickly. We were just seeing as many girls as possible. Now, we’re going deeper and finding out where we’re not reaching. The participants are really learning how to be part of a larger community.”

Sacred Heart School plans celebration

Sacred Heart School, 235 Nevin St., Lancaster, will hold a celebration honoring the 114-year legacy of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM), whose service, dedication, and faith have shaped the school’s history and community. The event will take place on Sunday, Nov. 17, beginning with a 10:30 a.m. Mass led by Bishop Timothy Senior. Following the Mass, the school will hold a dedication and blessing of a commemorative bronze plaque, which will be permanently displayed near the front entrance of the school. The plaque will serve as a tribute to the sisters’ enduring influence and contributions to the spiritual and educational foundation of the school.

Seventeen Sisters from the IHM community are scheduled to attend. All community members are welcome to join in the celebration, which will honor not only the legacy of the IHM sisters, but also their ongoing impact on students, families, and staff members.

For more information, contact Ann Weaver, advancement director for Sacred Heart School, at aweaver@sacredheartsch.org.

Registration for GOTR’s spring 2025 season will open on Friday, Feb. 7, and the 10-week session will commence during the week of March 10.

develop a tested solution to a problem.

Before flying out of the country, Keller prepared by conducting interviews and getting ideas for the project so she could hit the ground running. “I hope to be clear on what my problem is and how to start working on it,” Keller said. “I want to come home and really dig in, and I’d love to work with legislators, school administrators and parents. Everybody is concerned about social media and mental health.”

Despite traveling to a place she’s never been before to participate in a rigorous, yearlong training program, Keller said she isn’t daunted. Before Keller became an educator, she worked as a travel agent, and she has many friends and colleagues around the globe. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Keller joined Global GEG, an international organization that provides online training resources for educators. One of Keller’s close friends, whom she

met through Global GEG and spoke to every week during the pandemic, is also attending the Certified Innovator Program in Amsterdam, giving the two an opportunity to meet in person for the first time.

Although Keller is excited to attend the Google Academy in Amsterdam, she said she has no intention of leaving her position at Penn Manor School District. “Some people tell me, ‘Google’s going to hire you,’ and I say, ‘I love my job,’” said Keller. “I love working with the teachers, and I just love seeing the lightbulbs go off in the kids’ eyes when they get engaged in a lesson.”

Club meeting to focus on The HUB

The Millersville Woman’s Club will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 222 N. George St., Millersville. The program will feature Steve Gallion and Jacob Marino, board directors from The HUB. The HUB is a faith-based nonprofit organization located at 121 N. George St., Millersville. The organization supports Millersville University (MU) students by meeting their needs and building a community for them to feel safe in.

The HUB has a fully functioning food pantry that is open five days a week that offers groceries and hygiene products to MU students, as well as items for students with special dietary restrictions. A number of free meals are also

provided each week. The HUB also partners with a local thrift store to provide MU students with free clothing. Many students come to the university having a real need for all of these services.

The HUB relies on the support and generosity of its donors and its many volunteers to carry out the various services it offers to students.

The Millersville Woman’s Club supports The HUB by providing desserts at Thanksgiving for all the students who cannot leave the campus at that time.

The meeting is also the club’s annual Men’s Night. For more information about the program and the club, call 407-416-3231 or 717-917-6677.

Seniors invited to luncheon

The next Millersville senior luncheon will be held on Monday, Nov. 25, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville.

The per-person cost includes the meal, entertainment, and door prizes. Tickets for giveaway drawings will also be available

for purchase. The featured performer will be senior female artist Peggy Keller. Everyone over age 55 is welcome. Reservations are required by Saturday, Nov. 16, by calling Faye Siglin at 717-872-5811 or Vickie Dunk at 717-330-5282. To cancel a reservation, call Siglin.

at the end of October.

“It’s so essential to be able to offer short-term housing for people with nowhere to go,” said GSS’ marketing and communications manager, Rachel Shelley.

“Lancaster city is one of the most densely populated areas of families that we serve, and we’re happy to be able to take this first step to helping more people in need.”

After the ceremony, attendees were invited to tour the new residential facility. GSS had been using the building as an office space since 2017, and it served as a place for case managers to provide preventative services and meet with families at risk of eviction. The building was frequently empty between meetings, and GSS began thinking of ways it could better utilize the space. The organization began moving its offices out of the facility in October 2023, and the building was renovated to support transitional housing.

With the renovation and official opening of the North Lime Street building, GSS now offers short-term housing at all five of its locations, which include facilities in Phoenixville, Coatesville, Kennett Square and Ephrata. The Lancaster city location will provide safe housing for

up to eight people in addition to case management services and resources. Although the facility will only serve single mothers and children for the time being, GSS plans to expand its services to assist all demographics over the next 10 years.

Another factor in GSS’ decision to offer housing in Lancaster city is the convenience and accessibility it offers residents. Clients who stay at the facility are closer to child care, have more job opportunities nearby and can easily access public transportation. “It’s a rich opportunity for people to access resources in the city that we haven’t been able to offer before,” Shelley said.

Although the North Lime Street location has officially opened its doors, GSS still hopes to complete two addition projects to add a laundry room and renovate a patio on the second level of the building. Shelley said the organization is seeking partnerships with businesses and other nonprofits, as well as volunteers to assist with the projects. “We would love to welcome people for tours to learn more,” added Shelley.
