In December 2023, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 100 W. Main St., Mountville, held its inaugural craft show. The holiday event featured a variety of vendors and a silent auction, and it served as a fundraiser for the church’s community outreach initiatives in the Hempfield and Penn Manor areas. The craft show was a resounding success, and after popular demand, it will return to St. Paul’s UMC from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. The craft show will follow a similar format to last year; the event will feature multiple vendors and artisan crafters, as well as a silent auction that guests may bid on until 1:30 p.m. Vendors will operate stands in the fellowship hall of the church, and this year’s event will be attended by local businesses such as Tastefully Simple, Life Expressions, Thingamajigs & Whatnot, Southern Fields Home, Paparazzi, Linda’s Design Originals and Kathy’s Kreations, among many others. Items available to purchase will include home décor, handmade jewelry, crocheted accessories, woodworking items, spices, baked goods and kitchenware. The silent auction will feature items donated by participating vendors and various businesses in the community, including tickets to local experiences.
In 2023, the craft show at St. Paul’s UMC included a food truck for guests to purchase refreshments throughout the day. This year, volunteers from the church’s congregation will sell homemade breakfast and lunch items.
“We received a lot of positive feedback about how many different items were available to purchase. None of the vendors sold the same thing,” said event organizer Julie Ehrgood. “I handpicked each and every one to be a variety, and I kept it small so they could all get a good amount of business.”
Proceeds from the craft show
will benefit the church’s many community outreach programs and ministries. Throughout the year, the church supports local food banks, nonprofit organizations, schools and fire departments. St. Paul’s UMC also opens its building to allow Boy Scout troops, addiction recovery support groups and community service groups to hold meetings and events in the fellowship hall.
In 2023, Julie proposed hosting a craft show at St. Paul’s UMC to raise money for the church’s community service projects and ministries. Julie and her husband, Francis, reside in Washington Boro, and they became members
of the church three years ago.
Shortly after Julie joined the church, she felt called to lead a ministry to support other members of the congregation. Julie began organizing auctions and galas to raise funds for nonprofits throughout Lancaster County, and she now leads the Caring Hands committee at the church.
Caring Hands supports members of the church who are experiencing severe illnesses by delivering meals and cards, cleaning individuals’ homes and visiting patients while they undergo hospital treatment.

Lancaster County has a long history of unique traditions and community-centered events. From annual celebrations such as Maize and Snitz Fest in Lampeter and East Petersburg’s Blues Festival to county-wide programs like the Miss Lancaster County pageant, every town contributes to the area’s distinct culture. Many annual traditions have withstood the test of time and continue to be held today, but some events, such as Spooknacht, have been lost to time.
In 2024, few people have ever heard of Spooknacht. But prior to the 1970s, the annual event was highly anticipated by community members, and it involved every school in the county. According to archived photographs and clippings from old newspapers, Spooknacht took place every year around Halloween, and the event was organized by the former Lancaster Jaycees. One photograph from LancasterHistory’s archive, believed to have been taken during an event circa 1950, shows members of the Jaycees serving food

For more than 35 years, Helen Bechtold has been providing free Christmas dinner to seniors age 55 and up throughout the region. This year she’s back at it again - and she could use community help.
“This year, more than ever, we need community donations,” Bechtold said. “With the cost of living on the rise, help is needed more than ever.”
Donations are needed for both the meal fixings and additional items given to the seniors such as hygiene products and paper products. For the meal, each senior will receive turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, a vegetable
and a dessert.
Meals will be available for takeout only at the Hambones Social Club of the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St., Columbia, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 25.
Last year, Bechtold and other volunteers, including longtime cook Sis Luzader, distributed more than 100 meals, and Bechtold expects to do even more this year.
“There is definitely a need for this,” she said. “The older population of this area is growing.”
She emphasized that the meal and additional items are available to anyone age 55 and older, no matter their economic status.
“This is not only for low-income
seniors,” she said. “It’s for everyone 55 and up who is alone on Christmas or who just doesn’t feel like cooking. It’s for anyone who wants to come out and talk with someone and spend some time with other people while they pick up their meal.”
And although the meal is offered in Columbia, it is available for seniors anywhere.
“It’s a community effort,” Bechtold remarked. “It’s not only for people in Columbia. It’s for Lancaster, Maytown, Marietta, Washington Boro, anywhere in Lancaster County and beyond. I’ve had people from Virginia that come
Bechtold worked for the Columbia Senior Center for more than two decades, and her desire to serve seniors continued after her
“Seniors need socialization,” she said. “For a lot of people, Christmas Day is one of the hardest days of the year. This is a way to help.” Preparation for the meal begins weeks in advance when Luzader starts some of the dishes and freezes them, Bechtold said.
“Sis does all the cooking. I love to cook, but I’m not cooking for a hundred and some people,” she said with a laugh. Instead, Bechtold takes care of soliciting donations and rallying volunteers to help.
“We have a great group of volunteers, some of whom have been here for a very long time,” she said, calling out individuals including Robin and Jack Gamby and Chuck Kloidt. “We set up on Christmas Eve and have the Donegal wrestling team help out. They volunteer every year, and they’ve been doing that for so long.”
Bechtold emphasized that the meal is just one way she works to support seniors. “If I have a senior who comes in that day and says, ‘I need help,’ I’m there to try to help
from pg 2
them,” she stated. “I try to connect them with community resources.”
She’s also started a group called Friends of Lancaster County for seniors who want to go out for lunch once a month.
Giving back to her community is just part of who she is, Bechtold said, adding that she sometimes feels like a celebrity when she’s out in public.
“Every time I go downtown, people say, ‘I know you! You’re the Christmas lady!’” she said with a smile. “I give up part of my Christmas to do this, but it’s to make others happy. We want to make an impact on the community.”
Reservations are required to receive the Christmas meal, and they must be made by Monday, Dec. 16. To make a reservation or to donate to the project, call Bechtold at 717-342-2903 or Luzader at 717-475-2562. To learn more about Friends of Lancaster County, contact Bechtold.
The Veritas Community will offer an Advent sermon series, “God With Us,” on Sundays, Dec. 1 to 29. The series will explore the idea that the whole story of Scripture points ahead to the hope of Jesus.
The dates, themes, and Scriptures will include Dec. 1, “Hope for Creation,” Genesis 1:1-2, 26-27; Dec. 8, “The Promise of Peace,” Genesis 15:1-6; Dec. 15, “The Joy of Rescue,” Exodus 20:1-19; and Dec. 22, “The Kingdom of Love,” 2 Samuel 7:1-17. On Dec. 29, the gathering will be a brunch.
The Veritas Community gathers every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on the second floor of HUB 450, 450 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The first 15 minutes of the event are dedicated to fellowship time. For more information about the Veritas Community, visit www.veritas .community, email Ryan Braught at ryan@veritaschurchpa.org, or call 717-572-5914.
from a vehicle with the words “Jaycee Schpookmobile” painted on its side. The only information provided by the caption reads, “Official Lancaster Jaycees Schpookmobile, used during the Spooknacht celebration at Halloween.”
Julia Whitfield, a lifelong resident of Lancaster and manager of Mennonite Life’s visitor center, said she has no memory of Spooknacht. According to Whitfield, most members of Lancaster’s Mennonite community rarely celebrate Halloween or trick-or-treat, but instead hold a harvest celebration every fall. Pete Kingsley, one of the former members of the local Jaycees club, said
he has no memory of Spooknacht either. After following a trail of old newspaper clippings and bits of information in Willow Street Church’s archive, local historian Eric Schubert discovered that his acquaintance Linda Ross won the Spooknacht Queen contest in 1965.
“It was a big celebration at McCaskey High School that involved all the schools in the county,” said Ross, a Penn Manor High School alumna who now resides in Marietta. “It was accompanied by other activities, but the contest was a huge deal. It was driven by the Jaycees, and that year’s Miss Pennsylvania and Miss
Lancaster always attended.”
Ross recalled that each Lancaster County high school held its own Spooknacht queen contest, during which contestants would display their talents at a school assembly. Students voted on a candidate to send to Spooknacht for the county-wide competition, and contestants in the final pageant showcased a talent and answered questions in front of a panel of judges.
Ross said she does not know when or why the annual event officially stopped taking place. The origins of Spooknacht began several decades before Ross won in 1965; Ross’ mother won the title of Spooknacht Queen in the 1940s. “I think women just became less interested in participating in beauty pageants,” Ross speculated. “Some people used it as a stepping stone for other contests. I’m a dancer, so I just entered everything I could.”
Lancaster County may never hold a Spooknacht celebration again, but despite vanishing with almost no trace, the bygone tradition will always hold a place in the area’s long history of unique festivities.
The Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band will present a concert of Christmas music at the West Willow United Methodist Church, 118 West Willow Road, West Willow, on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. The band will present music in various styles, with selections including “C’est Noel,” “Christmas Sketches,” “O Holy Night,” “The Bells of Christmas,” “Home for the Holidays,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Fantasia on We Three Kings,” “Christmas Sing-Along,” “Jingle Bells Forever,” “What Child Is This?” and “Do You Hear What I Hear?” The band is directed by Howard Boots, and the narrator is Clark Lash.
A freewill donation will be received. Holiday refreshments will be available.

For one-of-a-kind gift items and some delicious food, stop by the annual Christmas Bazaar at St. Peter Catholic Church. The event will be held at the church’s Parish Center, Second and Union streets in Columbia, beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. It will also run on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“We have handmade items made by women of the parish, basket (giveaways), and White Reindeer items,” said Claire Storm, event volunteer. “The White Reindeer table contains gently used and new items for purchase.”
Saturday’s festivities will feature the items for sale, and Sunday’s event will include a fullcourse dinner, served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The dinner menu will include ham, scalloped potatoes, a vegetable, a roll, coffee, tea or water, Storm said. “Desserts made by parishioners are also available for purchase,” she stated.
The dinner is open to the public
and will be available for eat-in or takeout.
The bazaar is sponsored by the Parish Council of Catholic Women, with assistance from the men of the parish. Proceeds benefit missions of the church.
“Proceeds support the parish activities as well as worldwide initiatives,” Storm remarked.
“Funds were recently sent to the diocese of Asheville, N.C., to aid those affected by the recent hurricane and also to aid the poor in Haiti. Locally, we support Off the Streets and Our Lady of the Angels School.”
The bazaar also offers a way for the church members to connect with the community, Storm said, inviting everyone to attend.
“It’s a perfect time to purchase Christmas gifts, enjoy a reasonably priced dinner and socialize with friends and family,” she said.
Cash or checks will be accepted at the bazaar and dinner. Tickets for the dinner may be purchased in advance at the church office or at the door. For more information, search for “St. Peter Catholic Church” on Facebook.

The chorale presents two programs each year - one in the spring and one at Christmas.

The Millersville Woman’s Club will hold its annual holiday cookie and fudge sale on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6 and 7, at John Herr’s Village Market, 25 Manor Ave., Millersville. Onepound boxes of homemade cookies and boxes of fudge will be available beginning each day at 8:30 a.m. There will be a fee per box.
In the past, the club has sold out the first day, so shoppers are encouraged to buy cookies on Dec. 6. For more information, call 717-397-7965.
Proceeds will help fund scholarships and cash awards for both Penn Manor and Lancaster County Career and Technology Center seniors.
The annual vespers service at Boehm’s Chapel will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec 1. The historic chapel is located at 13 W. Boehms Road.
This year’s service will be led by a team from Byerland Mennonite Church. Music will be provided by pianist Jeane Caleb and Christine Bye. The worship team of Valerie Garber, Yvonne Garber, Emily Railing, and Dale Mylin will lead congregational singing.
The Rev. Matthew Bye, lead
pastor at Byerland, will provide the meditation.
Boehm’s Chapel board members and Byerland members Kevin Moore, Ben Railing, and Mylin will also participate in the service. Mylin is president of the Boehm’s Chapel board.
Boehm’s Chapel, built in 1791, is a landmark of the United Methodist Church. Byerland Mennonite, also south of Willow Street, recently marked its 300th anniversary.
As in past years, shoppers will be able to purchase cookies and fudge by the pound.
