Lancaster band celebrates EP release with fall tour BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
I
n November, Lancaster-based screamo outfit Fragile Like Life After toured to celebrate the release of its latest EP, “A Long Look At A Short Distance.” The fall tour marks the band’s third time hitting the road this year, and the EP follows two albums and a single that Fragile Like Life After has released since 2021. The expedition served as an opportunity for the three-piece project to showcase the fresh material as it trod new ground - creatively and literally. Fragile Like Life After comprises bassist Adrian Alicea, guitar ist Max Ludewig and drummer Chris Copeland, who formed the band in 2021. The three Millersville University alumni met through school a few years prior, and they had already become close friends by the time
the band took shape. Fragile Like Life After’s debut album, “I Thought I Saw A UFO But It Was Just Five Months,” laid the foundation for a sound as distinct as its name, taking cues from slowcore and screamo conventions. The 12-track release showcased Ludewig’s glittery guitar melodies and Alicea’s poignant delivery of spoken-word poetry; the dreamlike combination is anchored by Copeland’s vigorous but surgically precise drumming. In November 2022, Fragile Like Life After released its sophomore album, “(I Don’t Think They’re Coming).” The band became an active player in Lancaster’s music scene and the East Coast DIY circuit with frequent local shows and its first tour, and the 10-track album reflects Fragile Like Life After’s increasingly cohesive sound. “(I Don’t Think They’re Coming)” introduced
Manos House seeks to help young men travel the road to recovery BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
The discourse surrounding substance abuse and addiction, especially in adolescent men, has often been complicated by misconceptions and stigmas. The public opinion and legislative focus surrounding drugs and alcohol has shifted from decade to decade, but addiction and the recovery of young men who have substance abuse disorders are historically touchy subjects.
Manos House, a residential rehabilitation facility located at 1290 Prospect Road, Columbia, is one of many efforts to confront the stigma surrounding recovering addicts and help young men pursue healthy and fulfilling lives. Manos House is one of three programs offered by nonprofit organization Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Services, Inc. (DARS). The program serves young men between 14 and 20
Model railroaders use small trains to make a big difference BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Six years ago, Al Strausner and his grandson Matthew Palmieri started an annual tradition that combines their love for model railroading with the desire to give back to the community. Every December, the two train enthusiasts set up a model train display at West Willow United Methodist Church (UMC), 118 West Willow Road, Willow Street. The event allows Strausner and Palmieri, now 17 years old, to share their passion with members of the

community in addition to benefiting nonprofits in Conestoga and Quarryville. Strausner and Palmieri’s display returned to West Willow UMC on Dec. 7, and it will be open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 14, 21 and 28, and Sundays, Dec. 15, 22 and 29. Admission will be offered by donations of nonperishable food items or cash; all proceeds will benefit Conestoga Area Food Bank and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries in Quarryville. Although the display features many of the same models as previous years, Strausner and Palmieri typically arrange the pieces differently to offer visitors a unique experience every year. “We switch it up every year,” Strausner said. “Nothing stays the same except the track.” This year, the locomotive-loving duo has joined forces with a few other railheads to expand the event; the display at West Willow UMC will include an addition from

tance” is the product of three years of hard work as a band and the personal growth of its members, and the five-song EP separates itself from Fragile Like Life After’s earlier releases with an entirely new approach. Although shorter than the band’s first two albums, “A Long Look At A Short Distance” doesn’t waste a second; the songs are sequentially structured and work together to tell one story. “It felt like the most collaboratively we’ve ever written something,” Alicea said. “I filled in on bass, but my contribution was more lyrical. Max took initiative in writing the guitar riffs, and Chris helped structure the songs and flesh them out.” “Sonically and lyrically, (‘A Long Look At A Short Distance’) is a lot more concise than the other stuff. The songs flow into each other,”Copeland added. “From the start, it was (Alicea’s) idea to write something that doesn’t stop,” Ludewig said. “They said to me at one point, ‘I don’t want to talk during our set at all. I want to say hello, play our songs and say goodbye. (‘A Long Look At A Short Distance’) is not just five songs; this is a piece of work.” To listen to “A Long Look At A Short Distance” or for more information, search for “Fragile Like Life After” on Spotify, Instagram or Facebook. scan this code for more local news townlively.com

Three years of touring and recording sharpened Fragile Like Life After’s edge and allowed its members to refine both their sound and their dynamic as a band. The trio’s live shows became increasingly electric; Fragile Like Life After’s sets typically feature Ludewig’s rowdy engagement of the crowd while Alicea and Copeland remain individually locked in an intense showdown with their respective instruments. “A Long Look At A Short Dis-

said Palmieri. “People always love pointing out the models they had in their own Christmas setups as kids, which is neat to see.” Palmieri said that many visitors return to view the display each year, and the number of new guests has continued to grow since the first event. In 2023, Strausner and Palmieri raised more than $1,500 and garnered 400 nonperishable items for the food banks in Conestoga and Quarryville, and 365 community members visited the layout. Strausner and Palmieri ’s train-centered Christmas tradition has grown in more ways than one. In addition to collaborating with other model railroaders and having more visitors each year, Strausner said people have begun traveling from all over Lancaster County to

years old who are experiencing substance abuse disorder as well as many clients who may have committed crimes as a result of their addictions. Manos House residents typically live on campus for four to six months, during which time they have access to a variety of services and resources to help them on the road to recovery. “We focus on all the underlying issues that have led a young man to seek drug use as a coping strategy or a means to relieve emotional and mental pain,” said Chris Runkle, executive director of DARS. “Early on, we fell victim to the same stance as society: Don’t talk about substance abuse addiction. We realized that philosophy is against our mission; we want people to know what we’re doing and how we do it.” The residential treatment center was established in 1972, and it became incorporated as a DARS service program in 1975. Manos House operated in Lancaster city for several decades until the program moved to its current facility in 2012. The nonprofit decided to move from its former location to expand its programming and square footage, as its two downtown facilities were consistently at full capacity. The move to Columbia allowed Manos House to offer

clients additional resources and a full roster of services, including the addition of a computer lab, a kitchen for cooking classes, an art therapy room and a music studio. The Manos House program incorporates various academic resources and amenities designed to give residents access to creative outlets. The facility recently added a woodworking shop, where clients can learn skills such as home repair and carpentry. “Our core belief is that our clientele’s needs are always changing. For us to be adaptable and inclusive to what their needs are, we must continue to expand our programming to new outlets,” Runkle said. “Maybe it’s an opportunity for guys to build a demolition derby car to develop the self-confidence and communication skills that will lead them to be successful young men in the community.” For more information, visit https://manoshouse.com.

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) invites the public to a presentation titled “Lancaster City Planemakers - the Heiss Family and E.W. Carpenter” on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 9 a.m. at the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive, Millersville. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m. The speaker will be Todd Hostetter, an expert in Lancaster County toolmaking from the pre-Revolutionary War period through the 1880s and a published historian on local craftspeople and their families. Hostetter’s presentation will cover the history of early joiners, planemakers , coopers , blacksmiths, tinsmiths, and others in Lancaster County. Nearly every town had one or more of each of these people. Hoste tter ’s talk w ill unveil the work of joiners and planemakers in particular. A joiner bought dried rough lumber from a local sawmill or lumber merchant, straightened its edges and flattened the boards while a planemaker made tools and specialty planes and sold them to carpenters. From the late 1700s through the mid-1800s, two family planemaking shops were active in Lancaster city; they were run by the Heiss and Carpenter families. These two shops will be discussed by Hostetter before a closing question-and-answer period. A collector of Lancaster County tools, Hostetter volunteers at Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, where he catalogs the site’s tool collection and has helped orchestrate some specialty tool exhibits. The Manheim Township resident, born and raised in the Hershey area, is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology. He administrates a Facebook group titled “1700’s & 1800’s Planemakers-Toolmakers of South-Central Pennsylvania” and a website called the E.W. Carpenter Project. Although admission is free, donations will be accepted. For more details, contact Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 before noon or at pge8507 @aol.com.
