Discovering the legacy of a patriot
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Two decades ago, Todd Adams of Conestoga set out on a journey to trace his family tree all the way back to its first roots in American soil. The avid genealogist and Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS) trustee sought evidence to validate certain chapters in his family’s story, but Todd’s quest would lead him to discover pieces of his past that he never knew existed.
Todd’s primary goal was to validate his lineage on his mother’s side of the family, which he traced back to his sixth great-grandfather Michael Quickel. Due to Quickel’s military service during the Revolutionary War, Todd decided that he could validate his lineage by having his descendance acknowledged by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). The nonprofit organization’s mission is to promote patriotism,
to educate Americans about the country’s history and to recognize individuals’ ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War.
Todd researched his family tree for more than a decade, scouring the depths of historical societies and public records throughout Lancaster and York counties.
Todd examined his ancestors’ signatures and completed DNA testing as he gathered the proof of his lineage; however, Quickel was not yet officially recognized by SAR as a patriot, which the organization defines as a man who fought in the Revolutionary War or aided the cause by providing supplies or supporting the military in other ways. Four years ago, Todd learned that Quickel was finally recognized as a patriot by SAR and the Daughters of the American Revolution, an organization that shares SAR’s mission but focuses on the women who helped the United States earn its independence. Todd assembled his findings and investigated his

LanChester Chorus to present holiday concert
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Holiday tunes like “Silver Bells” and “Winter Wonderland,” as well as religious hymns, including “Mary, How Could You Have Known?” and “While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks” will be featured at a Christmas concert to be presented by the LanChester Chorus on Sunday, Dec. 22, at 3 p.m. at the Christiana Fire Company, 214 S. Bridge St., Christiana.
The chorus gets its name
from the fact that its members are from both Lancaster and Chester counties, including many singers who attend Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church and other faith communities in the Southern End. The director of the chorus, Kimberly Kusnersyk, is a resident of Strasburg, and the accompanist, Christine Smith, resides in Willow Street. Light refreshments, including cookies and punch, will be served after the concert. There is no admission fee, but a freewill

Reflecting on his opportunity as one of six Doherty Petri School of Irish Dancing students who took part in the Riverdance performance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this year, Isaiah Pujol, a 17-year-old Manheim Township resident, called the experience “awesome.” “A lot of people don’t understand how big Riverdance is in the world of Irish dancing,” explained Isaiah, who noted that the experience brought together the chance to be part of an international show where he could dance with professionals in an event as large as the Macy’s parade. “It’s this fantastic thing,” he said. Jase Lawrence, an 11-year-old who lives in Penn Manor School District and who was both the shortest and youngest member of the Riverdance parade performers, was impressed by the experience of dancing with professionals he has looked up to. Sarah Smith, a 14-year-old who travels weekly from Baltimore to train at the school, said, “It opens up opportunities for

offering will be received. For the concert, the fire hall’s banquet room will be festively decorated by members of the chorus with poinsettias and greens. Members will dress formally for the occasion. “The men wear dark suits and red ties, and the ladies wear black with red scarves,” noted Kusnersyk. “It’s a mixed choral groupalto, soprano, bass and tenor - and a mixture of ages. They sing very well. Most of them have sung in their church choirs or other choirs. They have a musical background.”
In addition to the songs already mentioned, music will include “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “Jolly Old St. Nicholas,” and “Ding Dong Merrily on High.” “We do a mixture of religious and
sacred music - familiar songs and some that are not quite as familiar. It’s always nice to hear something new,” said Kusnersyk. “We will also do a Grinch medley.”
According to a history of the chorus, the group has been meeting in Christiana for the past 74 years. The group was founded in 1950 by Martha Jean Moffett and Richard Wright. Wright served as accompanist and business manager for the chorus from 1950 through 2008. In addition to Moffett, the directors over the years have included Sally Breuninger, Jim Zwally, Donald Trostle, Elliott Block, Cliff Behrendt, Earl Pickel and Bill Young.
Over the years, the chorus has presented concerts at local venues, including Longwood Gardens and

lineage further to satisfy SAR’s requirements. “I knew this was my chance to put this lineage together and try to get them to validate it,” Todd said.
While Todd continued to research his mother’s side of the family, his contact at SAR made a discovery: Todd’s father was also a descendant of an American patriot named Asa

Putney. Unlike Todd’s connection to Quickel, his link to Putney was unquestionable; Todd’s patriot ancestry was backed by a written testimony from a court in New Hampshire that detailed Putney’s exploits in the war. Todd spent hours transcribing the centuries-old, cursive document, and he learned that Putney fought in two of the most pivotal skirmishes in the war: the Battle of Bennington and the Battle of Bunker Hill. “(Putney) was wounded in the Battle of Bennington. If there was not victory at Bennington, the United States likely would have lost the Battle of Saratoga,” Todd said. The Battle of Saratoga, which refers to a series of clashes between American and British forces in upstate New York, is regarded as a significant turning point in the Revolutionary War. Although Todd is still in the process of having his connection to Quickel verified by SAR, he is now officially recognized by the organization as a descendant of Putney. On Nov. 9, an SAR representative met Todd; his son, Trevor Adams; and Todd’s father, Les Adams, at CAHS to present each of them with certificates of their patriot heritage. The representatives, who were dressed in period-accurate attire, handed the Adams their certificates in the Harnish House, a stone building that was constructed circa 1740.

Esther Pujol, owner and head teacher of the school, called the chance to take part in the parade “unprecedented and amazing.” “It was an unexpected early Christmas gift,” she said, noting that she is not aware of Riverdance doing anything like this before. Other students from the school who took part in the parade included 15-year-old Ezekiel Pujol of Manheim Township, 14-year-old Abigail Ernst of Baltimore, and 16-year-old virtual student Liam Snodgrass of Hebron, Maine.
Teacher Lisa Petri explained that the opportunity was truly a oncein-a-lifetime experience for the students because Riverdance does not take part in the parade every year. She explained that the show sent out a call for student dancers to participate and that dancers could audition by video if they had not attended a Riverdance summer camp. A few of the students had attended Riverdance camps held in Boston, but Smith submitted a video.
By early November, the students who were accepted to take part and perform alongside professional Riverdance dancers had received notice. A few weeks prior to the event, they were apprised of the steps they would need to learn. “The kids are familiar with the show choreography,” said Petri, who noted that the students from the Riverdance camps had less to learn than those who had not attended. Smith experienced a little stress going into the event, but she reported that she had fun learning the dances.
On Nov. 26, the students arrived in New York City and took part in a three-hour rehearsal to prepare them for a performance of almost a minute, 40 seconds of which
would be seen by television viewers. Later that same day, the students, who were part of a group of about 40 amateurs chosen to take part, rehearsed for about 30 minutes in the spot on the street where they would perform, which had been closed for that purpose.
On Thanksgiving Day, the students lined up with the professional Riverdance performers at 7 a.m. According to Isaiah, they waited about two hours before marching two hours to the spot where they danced. Jase marched and danced with an injured foot that requires him to wear a special boot most of the time. “It hurt,” he noted, but added that the experience was worthwhile.
Isaiah noted that the weather on the day of the parade was a problem. “(The rain) was the challenging part,” stated Petri, noting that the students wear specialized shoes with fiberglass tips and heels. Because the concrete on which they performed was extremely slippery, several dancers - both professional and amateur - fell, but no one was hurt.
Petri noted that Riverdance brought Irish dancing to the world stage. “I think it speaks volumes to how entertaining Irish dance is,” she said, noting that the show has been running for three decades and that the current tour is called The New Generation. “That is literally true because it is now multigenerational in terms of appeal and for the dancers,” she said.
Students at the school will once again be associated with Riverdance when they perform in the lobby of the American Music Theatre, 2425 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, prior to the Irish dancing phenomenon’s 7 p.m. show on Saturday, March 1.

the Brandywine River Museum. The group has performed several times at the White House during its Christmas tours and at the Kennedy Center. The chorus performed at the Christmas tree-lighting ceremony at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg and at the open house at the governor’s mansion.
The chorus has sung the national anthem numerous times for the Philadelphia Phillies and Lancaster Stormers.
In the summer, the group performed evening concerts at the Convention Hall in Cape May, N.J., and for many years it presented Saturday evening concerts at the Music Pier in Ocean City, N.J.
The chorus also sings at local retirement communities and the
Christmas concert every December at the Christiana Fire Company. “We do this annually as our Christmas gift to the community,” said Joan Esworthy, who has been a member of the chorus for more than 20 years.
Next year, the group will celebrate its 75th anniversary, and it is planning special events. “For the 75th anniversary, previous members will come back and sing, and we will do a program based on some of the older music the chorus did years ago,” Kusnersyk explained. “I have programs that date to 1964 of what music they sang. We will go retro and to do a retro program.”
She added that the chorus previously performed in the old fire hall in Christiana, which is
now where the borough’s municipal offices are located. “They had fire engines in the room, and they took them out (for the concert),” she recalled. “That room had the best acoustics.”
Kusnersyk was a member of the LanChester Chorus before being named its director about 20 years ago. “I was a choir director for 20 to 25 years, and my mother was before that. It was a natural progression,” she said. “I don’t have a musical degree; I learned by doing.”
The chorus is always in need of additional singers. There are no formal auditions. However, anyone interested in joining the group is asked to email kkusnersyk@yahoo.com for more information.
