SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
VOL LVIII • NO 5
A New Home In New Holland n October of 2021, Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, was informed that the Manheim Community Pool, where Aaron’s Acres has held its summer camp, would not reopen in the spring. “In 30 days, we researched about 30 community pools,” said Paskoff. “Our team was amazing. We had to find a place.” When a relative of a board member suggested the New Holland Community Pool and Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, Aaron’s Acres staff members reached out to set up a meeting before Thanksgiving 2021. “(New Holland representatives) were more than accommodating,” said Paskoff. “We needed an indoor facility if the weather was bad. We needed accessible bathrooms. They had everything.” Paskoff noted she specifically worked with pool manager Leo Ward, office manager Paula Walsh, and borough manager Dick Fulcher.

Limeville Christian Preschool To Hold Open House BY FRANCINE FULTON
After being closed for a number of years, Limeville Christian Preschool, a ministry of Limeville United Methodist Church in Gap, will once again offer classes for children ages 3 to 5. To reintroduce the preschool to the community, an open house event has been scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 27. Attendees will be able to drop in anytime between 6 and 8 p.m. to see the classrooms, learn more about the preschool program and meet Mandee Culp, the new preschool director. Children are welcome to attend the open house with their parents. “We will have paperwork about the school and sample lesson plans,” said Culp. “We will also have a craft for the kids.” Also available will be information about registering for the 2022-23 school year. Classes are scheduled to begin at the preschool in September. Culp explained that the preschool will be located in the church’s newly renovated Sunday school wing. “We will also use other parts of the building. We plan to be outside, and we plan to use the fellowship hall and the sanctuary,” she said. The preschool operated at the church for about 30 years beginning in September of 1974, but it has been closed for more than 15 years. “There

seems to be a need now in the area, so (the church) is starting it back up,” Culp noted. Culp has connected with kindergarten teachers in the Pequea Valley School District and plans to talk with teachers from the Octorara Area School District as well to help develop the curriculum. “We will have a schedule each day,” she explained. “We will teach Bible lessons and everything (the children) need to know for their next steps in life, like letters, numbers, shapes, colors and simple math.” She noted there will be a strong focus on the children’s social and emotional development. Activities will include hands-on experience in music, library skills, gardening and outdoor exploration. “It is important for kids to be outside,” she said. “(In the cold weather) they can bring their gear and we will try to go outside a little bit each day. We also plan on having gardening boxes and play open-ended games in the yard.” Culp is looking forward to the upcoming school year, noting that several families have already registered their children to attend the preschool. “I have worked in early childhood education, in kids’ ministry and in preschools as well for 13 years,” she stated. “I am super excited to … work with local children.” Limeville United Methodist Church is located at 5783 Limeville Road, Gap. For more information about the preschool, email limeville preschool@gmail.com or visit www.facebook.com/Limeville ChristianPreschool.

Stoltzfus, Katie connected twice from three-point range and finished with seven points on the night. She tied Deena for the team lead in treys. McDonald also gave credit to the team’s defense. “Our defensive game worked as well as we expected,” he said. “We forced over 30 turnovers. There were also some dead ball turnovers, so we couldn’t get fast breaks on them.” Asked how crucial this win against a section rival was, McDonald replied, “At this point in the season it’s good to get wins - period. We have struggled to cleanly finish games. But we are playing better overall. Even if our offense doesn’t pick up, our defense is picking us up.” Pequea was coming off a close game at home Saturday, January 15 as Northern Lebanon came away with a 45-39 win. “We played very well,” commented the coach. “I wasn’t displeased at all about the way we played that game.” The Vikings built a 25-22 lead at halftime and the Braves kept pace in the third quarter but were unable to catch up in the fourth. “ We missed a few open layups in the first half,” McDonald noted. “You take that away and you have a much better game. We played well against a really good team.” Sarah Arment was the Braves’ leading scorer in this one, with 11 points. Shania Stoltzfus finished with 10 points and Deena Stoltzfus scored eight. On Friday, January 14, between two teams called Braves, the Pequea Valley Braves won 60-25 at Octorara as pretty much everyone contributed to the scoring. “It took us until the second quarter to get rolling,” McDonald remarked. “As soon as we started hitting shots and doing our thing defensively, everything went well.” Shania Stoltzfus and Katie Stoltzfus each nailed three treys, finishing with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Madison Clark poured in 10 points while Trinity Rosa scored seven, including hitting a three-point shot. Both Breanne Beiler and Morgan Graham chipped in with four points. Chavelle Fisher added a three-point jumper.

A program for sixththrough eighth-grade students will also be starting at Martin Meylin Middle School in Lampeter-Strasburg School District. “We would like to get the clubs all restarted,” said Lisa Kilgore, director of CEF of Lancaster County, who noted that more than 30 clubs were meeting in the county prior to the onset of COVID-19. “ We had 17 clubs last fall, plus a Zoom club, and we will have more than 20 this spring,” noted Kilgore. “It’s gradually rebuilding.” CEF is an international organization founded in 1937, with an active branch in Lancaster County since 1944. “Our purpose is threefold: to evangelize, disciple, and establish children in a local church,” said Kilgore. Clubs are open to any child who attends the school where the club meets. Usually a program for students in first grade through the highest grade level at the school is offered, but in some districts kindergarten clubs are available. Kilgore noted that each club is sponsored by a partner church. “When we finish our 14 weeks (of club meetings), we want (children) to stay connected if they want to. We try to connect them to that partner church,” she said. Good News Club meetings, which are held after school, involve a Bible lesson; a memory verse; songs; games; small group time, which is called Wonder Time; and missions. Each semester has its own theme. The spring 2022 series is

Aaron’s Acres from pg 1 For several years now, Aaron’s Acres has been seeking a home of its own in the northern part of the county. On Paskoff’s wish list is housing for therapy alpacas, along with sheep, goats, and chickens. A property with space to grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers would give the organization the opportunity to expand the Aaron’s Acres Plus program, which began offering activities for 22- to 30year-olds in early 2019. Among the activities planned for adult clients are farming, working with the animals,
and taking part in Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows participants with developmental disabilities to give back to others. Paskoff also hopes Aaron’s Acres can open a café to be manned by participants. “We are hoping to kick off a capital campaign in 2022,” said Paskoff, who noted the organization is looking for an existing building to renovate to meet its needs. More information about Aaron’s Acres may be found at http://www.aaronsacres.org.

Gibbons grew up hunting in the mountains near his home, where he enjoyed exploring the rugged areas of God’s creation. In 2011, Gibbons began filming his hunts, and he now has more than 100 from around the world on video. His favorite hunts involve mule deer, elk, and Alaskan moose. His vision is to share the Gospel and victory of Jesus with the hunting community, and he is known for weaving exciting hunting stories together with Gospel truth in talks that are both engaging and challenging. “(Gibbons) is a believer who supports the purpose of the event to raise funds for Restart to reach people for the Lord,” explained Santiago. Night To Shine

program to Lancaster County. This year’s Night to Shine will be held in two parts. A Shine-Thru Parade will be held on Thursday, Feb. 10, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim, followed by an at-home virtual experience on Friday, Feb. 11, beginning at 6 p.m. The event is open to anyone with special needs age 14 and older. “This is completely free to participants,” Ketcham stated. “When they arrive at the parade, they’ll get a name tag to put on their vehicle, and they get a swag bag. Volunteers will put things in their bag as the guests go through the route and they’ll get to meet different characters. … It’s a surprise which characters we will have there.” At the parade, participants will also pick up a boxed dinner to prepare during the virtual event. “They get everything from the food to full place settings for a nice dinner,” Ketcham explained, adding that people can enjoy it while watching a livestreamed presentation. “We encourage everyone to dress up on Friday,” she said. “We want them to make the at-home experience as fun as possible. They can dress up fancy. They can have a pajama party. They can have a themed night - whatever they’d like to do.” At the end of the livestream, participants will be treated to a dance party and a variety of giveaways will be offered, with items including gift cards and gift baskets. Typically, Night to Shine is held in person, but due to the pandemic, organizers have switched to a virtual format for the past two years. Before the pandemic, the event had grown from 67 guests the first year to more than 350 in 2020. Ketcham said Night to Shine has exceeded her expectations over the years. “Everything is done by donation, and I truly believe if this is something God wants to happen, He’ll provide the money for it,” she remarked. “And He always does.” She emphasized that Night to Shine organizers are still looking for volunteers as well as donations of items. “The more the merrier,” she said. “It’s a fun night for everyone.” For more information, and to register or to donate to Night to Shine, visit https://lcbc church.com/nighttoshine.
