The Factory Ministries Announces Day Of Giving Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, The Factory Ministries, located in the Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, has canceled its spring banquet. Instead, the ministry will hold a community-wide day of giving on Tuesday, May 5. Factory representatives were sad to announce the cancellation of the spring banquet, which is held yearly at Paradise Elementary School. The banquet is a chance for the ministry to connect with the community and share the work of the organization and the gratitude representatives feel toward the community. Although the banquet will not be held, The Factory has been busy working to make a difference in the lives of those residing in the Pequea Valley area who have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. During an unsettling time of social distancing and cancellations, many local residents have found a therapeutic and productive outlet in gardening, whether it is a newfound interest or a longtime hobby. For families looking for activities that can involve their children, gardening can get the entire family away from screens while providing opportunities to enjoy the spring weather. Gardening also teaches a life skill in sustainability, and it just might produce a harvest that is both valuable and delicious. “Planting vegetables can be fun and rewarding for the whole family,” pointed out Dan Funk, owner of Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses in Washington Boro. “Some spring vegetables such as lettuce, radishes, and spinach can be planted in April and harvested in May. sense of duty. “I wanted to see the changes that Arlen and (superintendent) Dr. Erik Orndorff have been (implementing) in our community continue,” said Trovato. “I love this district, and even though I love teaching, when the opportunity arose to help keep the ship moving in the right direction, I wanted to do my part to step up and help out.” See Taking The Helm pg 5

John Trovato became principal of Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) and Pequea Valley Intermediate School in January. Trovato, who has been a member of the PVHS faculty for nearly two decades, takes over from former principal Arlen Mummau.

A grand opening will be held at the expanded retail showroom of Esh Hardware & Farm Supply in Ronks on May 1 and 2. After more than 30 years in business, Esh Hardware & Farm Supply has completed a major expansion that doubled the size of its retail showroom located just south of Route 340 at 64 Clearview Road, Ronks. John Esh Sr. started the business in 1990 and operated it for a decade

before his son, John Esh Jr., bought the business in 2000. Raymond, who represents the third generation of Eshes, has also joined in the partnership. The Eshes invite the public to attend the grand opening celebration on Friday and Saturday, May 1 and 2. The festivities on May 1 will include opportunities See Esh Hardware pg 2

Garden Spot Village has announced that registration for the Virtual Garden Spot Village Half Marathon, 10K and Kids Half Marathon will reopen on Friday, May 1, at 9 a.m. and remain open until Friday, May 15, at 5 p.m. or until organizers run out of medals and/or shirts. It is with a heavy heart that we share due to the most recent CDC recommendations on group gatherings, we are canceling Lancaster County Community Auction originally scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at White Horse Fire Company. We are incredibly grateful to the Lancaster community for their generosity and willingness to work together with us during this time. As you know, the greatest need is to continue to provide services to our guest families so they can focus on their child’s care. We are saddened by the news, but we know that when we come together as a community, great things happen and we look forward to being together again soon! The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) wants people to know that the charitable food network is still operational, albeit with significant precautionary procedures to maintain maximum safety while striving to maintain a robust response. Individuals who are hungry and families that rely on food assistance should still seek help when they need it. CPFB leaders are committed to meeting the elevated need that they believe will develop as the COVID-19 situation continues.

To ensure the safety of the volunteers, the food bank has implemented several restrictions, including limiting staffing to only 10 individuals at a time. People who are healthy and have some free time to give are invited to volunteer. Finally, if people want to help, financial contributions are being

welcomed. The CPFB can acquire nutritious food in large quantities that has been handled safely and make it stretch very far. A $1 donation can help the food bank provide six meals. Rather than bringing people together in person for a traditional food drive, CPFB staffers can set groups up to do a virtual food drive online. Public Reminded To Report Abuse The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) reminds state residents that its ChildLine, a 24/7 hotline for reporting concerns of child abuse or neglect, is still fully operational and available at 800932-0313 for Pennsylvanians seeking to report potential cases of child abuse or neglect. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and as scheduled recognition activities and regular life have shifted due to COVID-19, DHS and child welfare advocates implore all Pennsylvanians to learn signs of potential abuse or neglect and, if they suspect abuse, make the call to ChildLine. As the public navigates this public health crisis and the necessary disruptions, it is important to not lose sight of the obligation to keep children safe and prevent child abuse. Whether it is a neighbor, family member, or community member encountered in a store or elsewhere, if someone suspects something is wrong, anyone can call ChildLine and make a report.

the students, who cover up to 13 miles per day while carrying all their gear. Now, Trovato will direct his energies toward the continued vision of MCL (Mass Customized Learning) in the district. The effort involves creating a learning environment where each individual has opportunities to reach his or her full potential and achieve his or her first career choice. “We are consistently trying to come up with new ways to reach learners where they’re at and try to help them find their goal first-choice opportunity (in their career path),” said Trovato. The vision was inspired in part by the realization that more than 60% of PVHS graduates do not go on to college. “You have to step back and ask, ‘What is the goal of education?’” explained Trovato. “Clearly, as a community, we need to be (concerned) about all types of learners. We shouldn’t just be focused on one segment. We need to need to figure out … how we can best help each student.” PVHS staff members intentionally refer to students as “learners” because the word puts the responsibility on the individuals to involve themselves in the process. “We are trying to help each student be more accountable in their own learning process,” explained Trovato. “We have an entire school building (of students), but we want to customize for each (individual), so we have learners with a variety of (customized) schedule types. We are able to offer that to our school community.” Readers who would like to know more about PVHS may visit www.pequeavalley.org/pvhs.

principals are Amy Koberstein at PVHS and Tim Hess at Pequea Valley Intermediate School. Trovato’s journey to the helm of PVHS began in Bar Harbor, Maine, where he was born. By the time he had finished eighth grade, his parents, who enjoyed vacationing in Lancaster County, had moved the family to the Manheim Central School District, and Trovato began ninth grade at Manheim Central High School (MCHS). After graduating from MCHS in 1998, Trovato earned a degree in education, political science, and history from Millersville University. He began serving as a history teacher at PVHS in 2001. During his many years at PVHS, Trovato said he was blessed to teach American history, a subject he feels passionate about. He also coached basketball, served as dean of students for 18 months, and helped develop the TRIBE elective, which involves physical education, history, science, and more. Trovato said that culminating experiences for the course occur in places such as Montana’s Glacier National Park. He described in detail a past year’s four-day, 48mile backpacking trip that followed the Appalachian Trail from Gettysburg National Park to Harper’s Ferry and included visiting the site of John Brown’s raid. “Science involved plant and animal life, how to take care of the environment, and how we can leave it for future generations,” said Trovato, who noted that the backpacking is challenging for

Planting Positivity from pg 1 You can follow up with a second planting in the same soil with another crop such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants that will be ready to enjoy later in July,” Funk elaborated. Isolation and stress can be countered by an intentional effort to focus on something positive, and many have found such value in horticulture. “Flowers around the house can brighten your spirit after being inside during this time,” added Funk, suggesting that some area residents may like to try their hand at ornamental plants. For those who wish to add a pop of floral color outdoors but may not have ample yard space, window boxes are one way to dress up a home’s exterior. If produce is the goal, Funk advised picking a location with ample sunlight. “Too much shade and you will just get plant

growth without getting any edible product,” Funk advised. For those who are new to gardening, just getting started can be an intimidating endeavor. Or perhaps space is at a premium, causing some to give up before they even begin. However, area experts can provide valuable insight to these issues. More than happy to provide guidance, Norma Zimmerman from Zimmerman’s Greenhouse of Ephrata supplied ideas for someone hoping to grow vegetables but lacking yard space. “Healthy homegrown vegetables (can be grown) from your own garden or patio,” she encouraged. “Grape or cherry tomatoes are the easiest tomato to grow for new gardeners, and herbs are also easy to grow in containers.” For the past six years, Community Bible Church in Marietta has offered a creative solution for those who do not have space for a garden but would like to develop a green thumb, offering rototilled plots to interested community members upon completion of an application. Bonnie Kleinhans is in her second year overseeing the 32 plots, each measuring 30 by 20 feet. “We are blessed with the land and wanted to share it with others and to interact with the community,” explained Kleinhans. A raised bed garden can also be a beneficial option, as it can confine the garden to a small location, allowing cultivators to concentrate their efforts. Other benefits of raised beds include a

Raised bed gardens, such as these, shown in early stages of preparation, are one option for local residents seeking to try their hand at gardening. natural barrier that deters weeds and pests while at the same time holding nutrients, improving drainage, and avoiding compaction. Joshua Wenger of Wenger’s Greenhouse in Lititz emphasized the value of a family gardening project and offered helpful tips for those daunted by the thought of getting started. “Start small, keep it simple the first year, then branch out with experience,” Wenger suggested. “Imported vegetables cannot equal the freshness, taste, and nutritional value of homegrown fruits and vegetables.” As with any worthwhile endeavor, there are sure to be challenges along the way, but a little effort goes a long way. Taking care of weeds before they get

out of control and seeking advice from a seasoned gardener will provide a head start for success. “The Lord has a lot of life lessons to teach us from plants, and the best botany classes are hands-on digging in the dirt and tending growing plants,” Wenger shared. “Dedicate time daily or weekly to weeding, watering, and pruning and you will be rewarded with beautiful flowers and a bountiful harvest.” Lancaster and Chester counties are known for their farms and family-owned operations. Whether the goal is organic, homegrown produce or a refreshing array of blooms, the answers to getting started on a gardening adventure can be found right within the local community.

The Factory from pg 1 modified its services to protect the vulnerable and serve those in need. To replace the in-person banquet, the upcoming communitywide day of giving will emphasize the organization’s continued work of caring for the community and providing essential services. The day of giving will take place through the organization’s website and social media pages. During the day, The Factory will highlight the impact of the gifts on the Pequea Valley community. Generous sponsors that have committed to giving on that day will also be spotlighted, including matching sponsorships from individuals and local businesses totaling $15,000 of the $25,000 the ministry hopes to raise. During this challenging season, The Factory Ministries emphasizes journeying together rather than walking alone. One

of The Factory’s goals is to journey alongside anyone who is experiencing the greater impacts of this season. The organization hopes community members will join in as the ministry works toward bringing hope and help to Pequea Valley. Those wishing to participate in the day of giving may visit www.thefactoryministries.com on May 5 to find the link to the official giving page. Those wishing to donate by check may simply write “giving day” in the memo line. All gifts received on the day of giving will go toward continuing the work of The Factory Ministries in the Pequea Valley community during and in the aftermath of COVID-19. The ministry invites area residents to search for “The Factory Ministries” on Facebook in order to see updates and stories of impact throughout the day of giving.

Ministry To Host Virtual Walk Run For Life Align Life Ministries has announced that its 2020 Walk Run for Life will be a virtual event. To participate, individuals may choose a healthy, safe, and fun activity to do by Saturday, May 9, such as running, walking, playing dodgeball, taking a bike ride, having a catch, hiking, or playing hopscotch. They should also take a picture of themselves doing the activity and post it to their Facebook or Instagram account using hashtags #WalkRunforLife2020 and #AlignLifeMinistries; pictures may also be emailed to info@alignlifeministries.org. Those who plan to run the 5K distance should measure their distance and track their time. They should then email their name, age, and final run time to info@alignlifeministries.org by midnight on May 9. Medals will be mailed to winners, and all 5K participants will receive swag. The event season will culminate on May 9 at 9:30 a.m. with a five- to 10-minute livestream video. The Walk Run for Life is a major fundraiser for Align Life Ministries, and participants have the opportunity to raise funds for the ministry by garnering pledges through an online fundraising page, which is automatically created when they register. To register or to obtain information on fundraising, readers may visit https://alignlife ministries.org/get-involved/walk -run-for-life/. Registration will close on Friday, May 8, at midnight. For more information, readers may visit www.alignlife ministries.org or contact Heather Muncy at hmuncy @alignlifeministries.org or 717274-5128, ext. 315.
