I’m dreaming of a Christmas show

Nathan Bankert, who is co-directing the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) fall show with Mindy Lapp, always wanted to do a Christmas show, but the theatrical schedule never seemed to accommodate that dream. However, for this Christmas, Bankert will get his wish. “This is our last year in this school building,” explained Bankert, referencing the new high school and intermediate school building currently under construction. “It’s our last musical on this stage, and I have always wanted to do a holiday show.”

Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” will be staged at PVHS, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers, on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, Dec. 7, at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at www .pequeavalley.org or at the door 30 minutes prior to curtain time.

Leacock bazaar - back with a twist

Although Leacock Presbyterian Church has held a Christmas bazaar for a number of years, the 2024 event will be a little different. “This year, we are inviting vendors into the space,” said organizer Angela Killian. In the past, any items for sale at the event were made or donated by church members.

The bazaar returned in 2023 after a hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions. For 2024, crafters, bakers, and other vendors were offered tables in exchange for a donated amount.

The annual Leacock Presbyterian Church bazaar will be held at the church, 3181 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, on Saturday, Dec. 7, from

8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include Christmas music, visits from Santa, food, and more.

The show is based on the 1954 film starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen. The plot focuses on two Army buddies - Bob Wallace, played by Landyn Waters, and Phil Davis, played by Alex Powell - and two dancing and singing sisters - Betty Haynes, played

by Madeline Heverin, and Judy Haynes, played by Karis Marshall. The four characters find themselves spending the holidays at an inn in Pine Tree, Vt., owned by Gen. Henry Waverly, played by Max Stoltzfus.

With more than 20 musical numbers, including the wellknown “White Christmas,” the

show is heavy with singing and dancing. Bankert knew his cast of 45 had the talent to perform the music well. Waters noted how different the music is from the last PVHS musical, which was “Newsies.” “It’s crooner style and the harmonies are really close, and there are those crunchy jazz chords,” said Bankert, adding, “The singers are embracing the (Irving) Berlin sound.”

“I love the music,” stated Heverin. “I always loved listening to Rosemary Clooney, so to be able to play (her) role and sing her songs is so much fun to me.”

While the cast members have readily taken on the difficulty of the singing style, the dancing - which Bankert said is required in at least half of the musical numbers - has presented more of a challenge. He lauded choreographer Katie Adams for her dedication to the process and complimented the students on their efforts. “These kids work extra hard to hone their skills in that area. I’m very proud of them,”

A very festive market

According to Barb Martin, associate director of mission advancement at Garden Spot Village (GSV), the annual GSV Christmas market is a popular attraction. “It’s very well attended,” shared Martin, who noted that 1,000 to 1,500 visitors enjoy the shopping and activities associated with the celebration.

This year’s Village Christmas Market, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will turn the Village Square and adjacent areas at 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland,

into a holiday-themed event featuring Mrs. Claus, food, shopping, and train room displays. To appeal to young attendees, organizers have chosen to focus on the heart of the season, with live hourly readings of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” on the lower level of the Village Square, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Cookie decorating for children featuring ornamental cookies resembling Peanuts characters will begin at 10 a.m. The Train Room, where volunteers have constructed a 1,837-square-foot display of HO- and O-gauge trains on a miniature landscape, will be open to visitors from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

he said. Waters agreed, pointing out that some cast members have worked extra hard on the dances so that they can help others.

Heverin said the four leads are bonding and enjoying learning their parts together. “I just really like my character,” said Powell, who added that he is having fun adapting to his role as Davis.

“Learning the dances and songs (is fun),” said Marshall. “It’s really rewarding.”

While performing a

Christmas show near Christmas is a dream come true for Bankert, he and the cast are looking forward to sharing the joy of the season with audiences through the holiday classic. “Senior citizens will connect with it, but it’s a good (show) for any age, because kids will enjoy the dancing, the lights, the costumes, the scenery, and the magic of the show machines,” remarked Bankert.

“Enjoy the Christmas spirit,” urged Powell. “Bring people together.”

Maple Leaf Publishing Canada has announced that J. Arthur Moore’s novel “Summer of Two Worlds” was showcased at the 2024 New York Library Association (NYLA) Trade Fair, which took place on Nov. 7 and 8 at The Oncenter in Syracuse, N.Y.

The event was an opportunity for librarians, publishers and literary enthusiasts to discover a story that intertwines Native American culture with the challenges of identity and belonging.

“Summer of Two Worlds” tells the tale of a young boy, known as Prairie Cub, who is caught between two worlds. Born to pioneer parents and

orphaned at a young age, he is adopted by a Sioux warrior and learns to navigate life as part of the Sioux community. As history reshapes the lives of Indigenous peoples, the boy’s father sends his son back into the world of his birth so that he may have a future. Prairie Cub must confront his white heritage and return to a world he barely knows.

Moore captures the essence of a boy’s struggle to reconcile his past with his future. The coming-ofage story is a testament to resilience, friendship and the enduring power of cultural heritage.

Following the events of

“Summer of Two Worlds,” Moore continues Prairie Cub’s journey in “Twelfth Winter.” Now known as Michael, a name dimly remembered from his past, he returns to the white world, where he faces the challenges of rebuilding his identity and finding a place in a society that has little understanding of his past. With the support of his friends, Michael embarks on a transformative journey that explores the importance of heritage and connection. Both titles highlight the significant impact of historical events on individual lives. The novels address themes of family, friendship, and the complexities of coming of age during tumultuous times.

Moore is an educator with more than 42 years of experience across various teaching environments. His passion for storytelling is reflected in his writing, which often incorporates his love of history and photography. In addition to “Summer of Two Worlds” and “Twelfth Winter,” Moore has authored several other works, including “Journey Into Darkness” and “West to Freedom.” His books have received numerous accolades, including the Mom’s Choice Award and the Book Excellence Award. Moore’s works have earned five-star reviews from Readers’ Favorites, and they are geared toward readers from middle grade to adult who are interested in historical fiction and stories of personal growth. For more information, contact the author by visiting www.jarthurmoore.com.

The new platform seeks to expand the definition of generosity to include giving time, talents, and treasure.

The church will offer Christmas themed items for purchase, and vendors selling jewelry, knitted

items, and local honey will be on-site. In addition, the church is holding a toy and book sale featuring gently

used items for preschoolers through first-graders.

The plan is for Santa to be present to meet visitors and take part in photo opportunities throughout the event.

The church is known for its tradition of selling plated cookies and bonbons at the event. “We will have artisan baked breads for sale,” said Killian. Food items for breakfast, along with coffee, will be available

to eat in or for takeout, as will lunch items, which will include homemade soup, barbecue, and hot dogs.

According to Killian, the event is more than a fundraiser for the church. “We want the community to have a holiday experience,” she noted.

All funds raised by the sale will benefit church projects. More information about the church may be found at www.leacockpres.org.

Wood Shop will offer handmade creatures for sale at a Village Square display and in the hallway outside the Wood Shop. “They will have everything from children’s toys and games to home and kitchen things to lovely sculptural (pieces),” said Martin.

The Wood Shop is one of several GSV groups that will take part in the event. “The Plants and Petals Club will (sell) live centerpieces and wreaths,” shared Martin, who mentioned a cross-stitch club will have a display as well. Other residents contribute by donating to the bake sale, which will open at 10 a.m. “It’s incredibly popular,” said Martin, who added that baked goods are usually sold out by noon.

The Maker’s Market will feature GSV resident artists and local artisans, some of whom have a special connection to GSV. “The Maker’s Market is my greatest joy,” gushed Martin. “I just love seeing what artisans can create.” The nearly 40 vendor spaces in the market will be filled by creators like Linda Binder, who makes purses, winter shawls, and capes, and Jars of Clay by Sheena, a vendor who uses speckled clay with white glazes to shape mugs and other items.

Martin said that a designer of jewelry using semi-precious gems will have a display, as

well as a maker of live-edge furniture from driftwood and author Henry Youndt.

A silent auction featuring gift baskets and experiences will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Gift baskets, which are donated by residents and employees, will include a Peanuts-themed basket.

Other themes that are traditional to the auction include a baker’s basket, a pet basket, and a basket containing a small Christmas tree decorated with cash. Experiences that will go up for bids include hot air balloon ride tickets, passes to Applecross Country Club in Downingtown, Allegro Orchestra Lancaster tickets, Fulton Theatre tickets, and tickets to the Turkey Hill Experience.

Other holiday shopping opportunities at the event will be provided by the Linden, Artisans Corner, and Share & Care Thrift Store.

Food to satisfy hungry shoppers will be available for purchase at Charlie’s Village Square Café, Refresh, the Harvest Table, and the Terrace Dining Room. Proceeds from the Village Christmas Market are donated to the GSV Benevolent Fund to aid residents whose finances

have been exhausted. Martin noted that all the GSV clubs that take part donate proceeds. “The generosity is just incredible,” she stated.

Training to focus on sustainable pest control

Penn State Extension will hold a Biocontrol School from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The workshop is geared for greenhouse and vegetable growers, crop consultants, Master Gardeners, educators, and anyone interested in learning about sustainable pest control.

Experts from the industry and academia as well as experienced growers will share the latest advancements in biocontrol research and application. The workshop will help participants understand biological control; options for choosing biocontrol agents such as nematodes, insects, bacterium, fungi,

and biopesticides; strategies to keep biocontrols on the landscape; and strategies to provide supplemental food for beneficial insects, which helps them maintain a stable population.

Six Pennsylvania pesticide recertification credits are available in each of the following categories: private, 03, 18 and 22. Participants also can earn various credits from Delaware and Maryland.

The registration deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30. The fee includes lunch.

For more information and to register, visit https://extension.psu.edu/ and search for “Biocontrol School.”
