Solid Rock To Offer After-School Fun
VOL LVIII • NO 22
A Ride For The Wounded Warriors BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Students will engage in various activities at Solid Rock’s after-school programs.
ocated at 34 E. State St., Quarryville, Solid Rock Youth Ministries strives to earn trust through authentic relationships with youths so lives can be changed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ. To accomplish this mission, Solid Rock offers several activities throughout the year, including after-school programs, art and drama programs, family fun events, and more. Solid Rock’s after-school programs will return on Monday, Sept. 27. These programs are free to students, and registration will remain open throughout the school year. “We miss our students, and families and we’re excited to start our school year programs,” stated youth director Josh Rotz. The elementary school schedule, for which students are grouped as
kids and their development,” said elementary program coordinator Luke Ragsdale. The middle school program, for sixth- through eighth-graders, will offer a time for young people to come together and experience community, friendship, mentorship, and fun in a Christ-centered context. This program will feature group games, free time, and a Bible lesson, followed by a time of small group interaction with peers and Christian adults. There will also be a special event once a month, such as glow-in-the-dark dodgeball, Minute to Win It style games, movie nights, and hikes. The middle school program will meet Thursdays from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. The high school program, for ninth- through 12th-graders, will engage students and provide them with opportunities to make
friends, have fun, build mentoring relationships with volunteers, and either start or grow on their journey with Jesus. Once a month, there will be a special event, such as a corn maze, glow-in-the-dark dodgeball, miniature golf, movie night, and art/video game night. This program will meet on Mondays from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. “Solid Rock is a safe and fun environment,” said Rotz. “Students can come here and feel loved and accepted. That’s the heart of Solid Rock.” If there is ever a time that transportation is the only reason a child is unable to come, contact Solid Rock at solidrockyouthmin@gmail.com or 717-786-8007 to discuss possible options and arrangements. Solid Rock is looking for volunteers to assist with the programs. For more information, visit www.solidrockquarryville.com.

Solanco Fair Back, Bigger And Better Than Ever Many events were canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual Solanco Fair was one of them. As for this year, Robert Lowery, president of the Solanco Fair Association, said he hopes that the 72nd annual Solanco Fair will be the biggest ever. After hitting a pause on the event last year, Lowery noted that he is looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. “People put so much time and effort into their produce, livestock, crafts, and more,” said Lowery. “The fair is a huge event for the Solanco area.” Since the fair’s inception in 1950, efforts have been made to make each year bigger and better than before. The Southern End saw its first Wednesday evening parade in 1952. In 1957, the Lions Club brought its french fries to the fair, and three years later, the popular milkshake stand made its debut. Due to the fair’s growth, the fair relocated from the property of Jerome H. Rhoads to Legion Park in 1966. Soon thereafter, the Fair Association purchased 5 acres of ground adjoining the park. In 1975, the first permanent Fair Association building was erected. The next land purchase was made in 1982, which introduced two access points to the fairgrounds. From 1975 to 1985, a series of livestock pole buildings were added. The next building was constructed in 1985, and the addition of a large show barn was brought in two years later. That same year, in 1987, a funnel cake stand was added to the

grounds by Farm Women Group No. 15. The next addition to the grounds was a building to house various exhibits. The largest structure to date was built on the grounds in 2000, and the last building was completed in 2003. The 72nd annual Solanco Fair will take place at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 South Lime St., Quarryville, from Wednesday, Sept. 15, to Friday, Sept. 17. Festivities will kick off at 9 a.m. on Sept. 15 with various exhibit judging. The parade will begin at 6 p.m. that same day with Carl Hess serving as the grand marshal. This year’s parade theme will be “A Few of My Favorite Fair Memories.” The officers and directors of the fair felt from the start, and included in the bylaws, that gambling, concessionaires, and carnival-type activities should not be permitted. As a result, the Solanco Fair has maintained its agricultural and family roots. “The Southern End is special because of the people, and they appreciate the tradition we try to preserve,” stated Lowery. “An agricultural fair is what we want to maintain.” The Solanco Fair Association redesigned its website this year. “We’re looking forward to keeping the community engaged by presenting new content,” explained Lowery. The Solanco Fair Association welcomes volunteers. For more information, search for “Solanco Fair” on Facebook or visit www.solancofair.org. because of COVID, the 44th annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction (BDRA), will be held at the Lebanon Valley Exposition Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24 and 25, beginning at 9 a.m. The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided over $17 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. Funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding from disasters from earthquakes in Haiti to a tornado in Campbelltown. Separate auctions will include the general auction,
quilt auction, the theme basket auction, the silent auction, the heifer auction, the coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The event may have as many as five auctions taking place at once. Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A children’s store will offer gently used items, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals. Weather permitting, there will also be free barrel train rides and pony rides for a nominal donation. There will be an area for vendors of crafts and art objects and a farmers market with fresh produce and baked goods, including homemade pies. Amish doughnuts and Amish soft pretzels, both homemade on-site, will be available. Artisan Alley, located in the West Hall, will be a collection
ture specialty coffees, German pastries, artisan bread, handmade pottery and various artists. To find out more about

puters, lights, or fans. A generator provides an additional power source and also enables missionaries to run power tools used to repair damage caused by termites and mold. Bolivian national pastors use WhatsApp to communicate with FIA staff and volunteers. COVID-19 has created significant needs for relief aid such as medication and food in villages along the Amazon River. “Being able to speak directly to national leaders on the frontlines has been instrumental in getting critical supplies to the most desperate villagers,” shared Gary Ferch, FIA’s field leader to Bolivia. Cellphone reception in some areas has allowed staff and volunteers to speak with or text national leaders in Nicaragua working on community transformation projects among the Rama Cay people. “The villagers learned construction skills taught by past volunteer teams, so these check-in conversations ensure that they have the knowledge and supplies necessary to continue building,” reported Johnston. The villagers completed three hurricane-resistant homes independently in 2020, and they have four more houses started this year. Friends In Action has also created stateside and local opportunities for volunteers to continue with hands-on projects. A volunteer team recently returned from the campus of Ethnos360, a missionary

training facility in Missouri. In less than a week, the team completed a full kitchen installation, repaired a well house, installed soffit vents and adjusted ridge roofing vents, trimmed out two bathrooms, installed fiberglass paneling, and renovated multiple student rooms. FIA has an additional trip planned to continue these efforts from Sunday to Saturday, Sept. 12 to 18. Volunteers have also served through various projects offered at FIA’s Middletown headquarters. Tradespeople have recently been making repairs on a barn located on the grounds, installing an entrance sign at the front of the property, repainting exterior doors, performing mechanical work, and trimming trees. Friends In Action International (FIA), a nonprofit in Middletown, has hosted multiple international service trips to remote locations for almost 30 years. Throughout the organization’s six countries of service, volunteers complete a variety of infrastructure projects, life skills trainings, and Bible teaching sessions in support of missionary work targeting unreached people groups. Due to COVID-19 lockdowns, travel bans, and social distancing requirements, many of these trips were canceled in 2020 and 2021. However, FIA has adapted its operations so local volunteers can continue their international mission efforts. Embracing technology options, Friends In Action field leaders and volunteers have used phone calls, texts, and Zoom meetings to continue to connect with indigenous people abroad. “Even in very remote locations, we can FaceTime or speak with national partners and missionaries in real time. Thankfully, we have been able to sustain impacts and service in all locations,” said executive director Tim Johnston. Mike Butler, Friends In Action’s field leader to Papua New Guinea, was able to teach a missionary how to repair a generator through email exchanges. While solar power provides an energy source, frequent cloudy days can leave missionaries without enough power to charge com-

Brace yourself for the “silver tsunami.” That’s a term used to describe the predicted dearth of workers in the future as the current workforce ages into retirement. Through an innovative initiative, the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC), is equipping students to prepare for their future. For more than 50 years, LCCTC has provided opportunities for high school and adult education, career training and workforce development. The Pathways to Careers and Higher Education program just launched for the 2021-22
school year and will build a bridge between secondary and postsecondary education. It serves as an umbrella over the various postsecondary opportunities available to students, said Amber Kreger, director of higher and continuing education. “This is a way to better serve our community of students by offering a pathway from what they are learning in high school directly into what they will learn in our adult program,” she explained. “The students are already in the same buildings as our adult learners. They cross paths often, so we thought, ‘Why not offer a program where the students can benefit from what we
already do here?’” Under Pathways, students may earn Technical Institute in the High School credits, receive postsecondary credit transfers, participate in dual enrollment or earn credits through the state Students Occupationally and Academically Ready (SOAR) program. Pathways will allow students in senior-year programs the opportunity to accumulate credits that will follow them into higher education with partnering institutions. Higher learning partners include all community colleges throughout Pennsylvania as well as Delaware Valley University, Pennsylvania College of Technology and

more. Students will also be able to work toward earning their Associate in Specialized Technology (AST) degree. “I’m really excited about what we’re doing with our associate degree programs,” said Mike Moeller, director of curriculum. LCCTC allows credit transfers for students in its high school automotive technology program into its AST associate degree program, and plans are in the works to add the school’s other two associate degree programs - veterinary technology and dental hygiene - to the credit transfer program as well. Moeller noted that programs like the ones offered at LCCTC are meeting the needs of today’s employers while also serving the students. “Over the last few years, schools have really begun to the see the value of career and technology education as a way to earn a great living and learn skills, but with very minimal college debt,” he said. “There are so many opportunities for jobs in these fields as well.” Kreger agreed, adding that Pathways allows students to come in with a specific plan and the end result in mind. “There is a set goal and finish line,” she said. “That goal may change slightly as they go through their program, but there is a finish line, and we are offering students ways to get there.” For more information on LCCTC or Pathways, visit https://lancasterctc.edu.
