Youth group will host Parents Night Out fundraiser
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Whether you’re raising one child or a dozen youngsters, parenting could be considered a full-time job. Although parents aren’t required to punch in and out every day, providing for children and meeting their needs is a constant duty for at least 18 yearsand many parents work 40 hours a week at the same time. For a couple with kiddos, a few hours of spare time to catch a movie or eat at a sit-down restaurant may be few and far between.
“It’s a place for kids to have fun in a safe environment.”
Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church, 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, will host its monthly Parents Night Out on Friday, Dec. 13, from 6 to 10 p.m. During the event, members of the church’s youth group will facilitate a variety of activities for children in fifth grade or below to give parents an evening to themselves.
Child care will be available by a suggested minimum donation, and adult chaperones will be present for the duration of the event. The church’s youth group leaders conduct background checks on all adult chaperones, and each chaperone is CPR certified. Defibrillators are located on-site in the event of an emergency.
Youth group members will operate multiple stations for
Parents Night Out, including a room where kids may watch a children’s movie and enjoy light refreshments as well as a nursery room equipped with toys and activities for little ones. Additional activities will take place in the gymnasium.
“The babysitters do all the
activities; the adults are more there for supervision. It’s a place for kids to have fun in a safe environment,” said Stephanie Stoltzfus, a member of the youth group’s leadership board. “And the babysitters are just awesome. A few boys on the basketball team usually lower the basket

Six years ago, Al Strausner and his grandson Matthew Palmieri started an annual tradition that combines their love for model railroading with the desire to give back to the community. Every December, the two train enthusiasts set up a model train display at West Willow United Methodist Church (UMC), 118 West Willow Road, Willow Street. The event allows Strausner and Palmieri, now 17 years old, to share their passion with members of the community in addition to benefiting nonprofits in Conestoga and Quarryville. Strausner and Palmieri’s display returned to West Willow UMC on Dec. 7, and it will be open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 14, 21 and 28, and Sundays, Dec. 15, 22 and 29. Admission will be offered by donations of nonperishable food items or cash; all proceeds will benefit Conestoga Area Food Bank and Solanco Neighborhood Ministries in Quarryville.

In November, Lancaster-based screamo outfit Fragile Like Life After toured to celebrate the release of its latest EP, “A Long Look At A Short Distance.” The fall tour marks the band’s third time hitting the road this year, and the EP follows two albums and a single that Fragile Like Life After has released since 2021. The expedition served as an opportunity for the threepiece project to showcase the fresh material as it trod new

The three Millersville University alumni met through school a few years prior, and they had already become close friends by the time the band took shape. Fragile Like Life After’s debut album, “I Thought I Saw A UFO But It Was Just Five Months,” laid the foundation for a sound as distinct as its name, taking

Palmieri typically arrange the pieces differently to offer visitors a unique experience every year. “We switch it up every year,” Strausner said. “Nothing stays the same except the track.”
This year, the locomotive-loving duo has joined forces with a few other railheads to expand the event; the display at West Willow UMC will include an addition from Ben Stiles, and a second layout will be set up by Chris and Justin Trout at their home, located at 1729 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. Chris and Justin’s display will be open to the public during the same hours as the West Willow UMC layout, and the couple will also offer admission by donations of nonperishables or cash for Solanco Neighborhood Ministries and Conestoga Area Food Bank.
“We try to change it up a bit to make it interesting for people,” said Palmieri. “People always love pointing out the models they had in their own Christmas setups as kids, which is neat to see.”
Palmieri said that many visitors return to view the display each year, and the number of new guests has
Church plans community meal
Joseph’s Table at Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, will offer a meal to members of the community on Thursday, Dec. 19.
Meals will be available from 5:30 to 6 p.m. There is no charge. Those who would like a meal should enter the parking lot from Penn Grant Road and exit onto Shiprock Road.
In the case of inclement weather, the church will follow Lampeter-Strasburg School District’s decision on holding or canceling activities.

continued to grow since the first event. In 2023, Strausner and Palmieri raised more than $1,500 and garnered 400 nonperishable items for the food banks in Conestoga and Quarryville, and 365 community members visited the layout.
Strausner and Palmieri’s train-centered Christmas tradition has grown in more ways than one. In addition to collaborating with other model railroaders and having more visitors each year, Strausner said people have begun traveling from all over Lancaster County to check out the display and to support the food banks.
“We just love the whole thing,” Strausner said. “Seeing the people who always come back is neat, and they’ve helped us raise a good amount of money for a good cause.”

cues from slowcore and screamo conventions. The 12-track release showcased Ludewig’s glittery guitar melodies and Alicea’s poignant delivery of spoken-word poetry; the dreamlike combination is anchored by Copeland’s vigorous but surgically precise drumming.
and the driving riffs that defined its debut.
In November 2022, Fragile Like Life After released its sophomore album, “(I Don’t Think They’re Coming).” The band became an active player in Lancaster’s music scene and the East Coast DIY circuit with frequent local shows and its first tour, and the 10-track album reflects Fragile Like Life After’s increasingly cohesive sound. “(I Don’t Think They’re Coming)” introduced gripping vocals screamed by Alicea to Ludewig’s lead vocals
Three years of touring and recording sharpened Fragile Like Life After’s edge and allowed its members to refine both their sound and their dynamic as a band. The trio’s live shows became increasingly electric; Fragile Like Life After’s sets typically feature Ludewig’s rowdy engagement of the crowd while Alicea and Copeland remain individually locked in an intense showdown with their respective instruments.
“A Long Look At A Short Distance” is the product of three years of hard work as a band and the personal growth of its members, and the five-song EP separates itself from Fragile Like Life After’s earlier releases with an entirely new approach.
Although shorter than the band’s first two albums, “A Long Look At A Short Distance” doesn’t waste a second; the songs are sequentially structured and work together to tell one story. “It felt like the most collaboratively we’ve ever
written something,” Alicea said. “I filled in on bass, but my contribution was more lyrical. Max took initiative in writing the guitar riffs, and Chris helped structure the songs and flesh them out.”

“Sonically and lyrically, (‘A Long Look At A Short Distance’) is a lot more concise than the other stuff. The songs flow into each other,” Copeland added.

and teach the little kids how to dunk. They look up to these guys, so it’s neat to see those connections.”
In addition to giving parents some much-needed time off, Parents Night Out serves as a means for Chestnut Level’s youth group to raise money for its weekly Bible studies and annual mission trips. In 2023, youth group members participated in a mission trip near the Bahamas, where they assisted former church member Bruce Dunham in completing construction and renovation projects in the area. Dunham used a sailboat to transport volunteers to churches and transitionary housing facilities on local islands,
where the kids repainted walls, installed drywall and repaired roofs.
In June 2025, the youth group will take its next mission trip to North Carolina to help local communities recover from damage caused by recent hurricanes and severe weather. Chestnut Level’s pastor, John Hartman, is a native of North Carolina; Hartman proposed the trip after Hurricane Helene devastated towns along the coast and throughout the southern United States.
To register a child for Parents Night Out, contact Stoltzfus at 717-823-2934 or juniorisno1@yahoo.com or call the church office at 717-548-2763.

Tree Tenders training planned
Penn State Extension will offer a Tree Tenders training webinar series on Wednesdays, Jan. 8 to Feb. 19, from noon to 1 p.m.
Through the Tree Tenders training program, developed by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) in partnership with Penn State Extension Urban Foresters, people may gain the skills needed to restore and care for their community’s tree canopy. Individuals learn how to plant, prune, and maintain trees. Tree Tenders work to increase environmental health and sustainability, enhance green spaces, and increase tree cover in neighborhoods across Pennsylvania. Since 1993, PHS has
trained thousands of Tree Tenders in more than 200 neighborhoods across Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has supported the program since 2004. In 2008, the program expanded to Pittsburgh and smaller metropolitan areas, and by 2013, it became available statewide. Since then, thousands more have been trained throughout Pennsylvania and beyond.
Each participant will receive a printed copy of the Tree Tenders Handbook, published by PHS.
To register by Friday, Jan. 3, visit https://extension .psu.edu/ and search for “Tree Tenders Training.”
Circle Legacy Center posts program
Circle Legacy Center will hold a Second Friday program on Dec. 13 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. Attendees are asked to use the Concord Street entrance.
The event will offer Native American arts and crafts activities for adults and kids, items available for purchase, Christmas music, and fun activities. Attendees may bring food items to share, but participation in the potluck is optional.
