You’re invited to a fight, a confrontation between good and evil, a struggle for lives.
In the war against human trafficking, the North Star Initiative (NSI) event Welcome to the Battle is a preemptive strike. It is an attempt to deal the enemy a blow before he or she can mount an offensive.
“The battle is to end human trafficking in our community,” said Melinda Clark, NSI’s chief executive officer. “Our community doesn’t want trafficking to happen here, and it does. The battle line is long, and everyone has a chance to step up and be a part of the battle. Part of the battle tactics is to know what it looks like and have everyone know what to do when they see it.”

state of human trafficking in Lancaster County. This year’s Welcome to the Battle will be conducted on Tuesday, Jan. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lives Changed By Christ Church’s Ephrata Campus, 5 Hahnstown Road.

Trafficking Task Force and ZOE International East Coast; Meg McCallum, Berks County supervising attorney; Kevin Quinter, detective sergeant of the Wyomissing Police Department; Celeste Hutchinson, NSI’s clinical director; and Jen Sensenig, NSI’s founder.
The event, which is being presented as part of the United States Department of State’s National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, is free to attend, and registration at www.north starinitiative.org/events is encouraged. Light refreshments will be served, and a number of local human trafficking fighting agencies, including Lancaster YWCA, Sparrow Place, Hope Inspire Love, Greenlight Operation, ZOE International and She’s Somebody’s Daughter, will be there providing information on their services.

Through their natural connection, humans and dogs possess an ability to communicate. Dogs hear and listen to humans.
It is that premise, that assertion, upon which the Lititz Public Library (LPL) Paws 2 Read program is based. Kids hone and enhance their reading skills by slowing down and directing their words and sentences to dogs.
“The dogs are nonthreatening,” said Karen Payonk, who’s been the library’s youth services director and assistant director for 24 years. “We want the kids to be comfortable. The dogs are
also nonjudgmental. They don’t care if the child is stumbling over the words. Most of the time (the interaction) is one-on-one. Kids learn to take their time. The dogs help calm the kids. But you wouldn’t believe how much their reading improves. This is a win-win for everyone.”

Thanks to a unique partnership with a local veterans group, students at several Lancaster County high schools can get a firsthand account of the Vietnam War. A panel of veterans, organized by Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Chapter 1008, provides students with an immersive experience, offering insights that go beyond what they read in history books.
The panel, which has been visiting local schools for nearly a decade, includes veterans from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force, each of whom shares a unique perspective.
Education chair John Hoober, who organizes the visits, explained that the veterans’ goal is not to teach a traditional history lesson but to engage students with personal stories.

Church sets Puzzle Palooza
Faith United Methodist Church, 1290 Fruitville Pike, Lititz, will host Puzzle Palooza on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m.
Teams of two to four people will race to complete a 500-piece puzzle without access to the box
top. The winning team will receive a prize. All teams will get to keep their puzzles after the event.
Preregistration is required, and space is limited to 20 teams. There is a fee per team, due at the time of registration.

The Lancaster Muzzle Loading Rifle Association (LMLRA) will hold its 68th annual gun show at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 184 S. Lime St., Quarryville. The show will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26. The show will feature 150 tables, and the public will be able to buy, sell, or trade items at the show. Among the items will be modern and antique guns, muzzleloaders, black powder items, knives, collectibles, books, and accessories. The event will also include silent auctions and artisan demonstrations. Food and other refreshments will be available.

The LMLRA is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1956 and currently has approximately 100 members. Dellacamera was the recipient of the Colin Jose Media Award and was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2018 for his 40-year career announcing and covering soccer on radio and TV. His work includes announcing 17 FIFA World Cups - 10 men’s and
seven women’s - and three Olympic Games, as well as MLS and NWSL games. He was the lead play-byplay announcer for the Philadelphia Union for 13 years. At the gala, Dellacamera will share his perspective of the journey of women’s professional soccer in the U.S. in the past, present, and future. “There are people who don’t even think human trafficking in Lancaster County happens,” said Clark. “If you don’t think it’s happening, you’re not going to be looking for it. That knowledge can protect someone else.”
“So many people in the community have questions,” added Clark. “Some people struggle attending an event like this. It is hard information. My intent is to have people walk away with hope and feeling empowered. The way we talk about it is true and honest and real, but it brings light, not darkness.”
Last year, more than 250 people attended Welcome to the Battle.
“There are warning signs with human trafficking,” said Clark. “Some of the things you might be looking for are somebody who lacks ID papers, a relationship in which the participants seem mismatched. It could look like an excessive dependence
on a cellphone to a point of desperation. It could involve income that seems extravagant. Anything that looks off is off. It may not be trafficking, but it’s a sign of vulnerability. It should be a concern. It should be a red flag.”
Clark said that it is impossible to know exactly how much human trafficking is being perpetrated in Lancaster County.
“It is one of the most underreported and misidentified crimes,” said Clark. “Exploitation can come before the actual trafficking. There are people in Lancaster County who are victimized, and there are people who are brought here to be trafficked. Buyers are creating demand. People are paying to abuse (victims) in Lancaster County. The way trafficking happens in Lancaster County is a result of exploiting substance abuse or grooming young people. Social media is the No. 1
source of trafficking.”
Welcome to the Battle was originally established in 2018. Last year, NSI conducted more than 85 community presentations designed to raise the awareness of human trafficking, educate families and empower attendees through knowledge.
“The battle to end trafficking is winnable,” said Clark. “Our intention is to replace myths and misconceptions with facts. When it comes to the facts, everyone should be saying the same things because the truth is the truth. There are different people and different groups doing work to make progress. Everybody has different approaches, different resources. We aren’t competitors; we’re colleagues. We all have a place on the battle line.”

The first Friends of the Tanger Arboretum Nature Series program of 2025 will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 10 a.m. Aaron Haines will speak about remote acoustic survey efforts for bats, a cost-effective way to survey rare bats in Pennsylvania, and how to use recording devices to record bat vocalizations. The devices are an integral tool in evaluating bat species under conservation with minimal human interference.
Bats are key indicators of the health of ecosystems, and they provide pest control over problematic insect species. However, in Pennsylvania, seven species of bats are of conservation concern, with three species listed as endangered and two species actively protected by the Endangered Species Act.
Haines is a certified wildlife biologist and a professor of conservation biology at Millersville University. He is also the director of the applied conservation lab at Millersville University.
Haines has a Bachelor of Science in forestry and wildlife management from Virginia Tech, along with a Master of Science in wildlife and range management and
a Ph.D. in wildlife science, both from Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
A Nature Series presentation on maple sugaring will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 10 a.m. Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation senior naturalist Lisa Sanchez will share information about the production of maple syrup, its importance to indigenous peoples and European colonists, its role in food rationing during World War II, and its influence on people’s taste buds today. Attendees will explore the history of the tools and techniques used to produce maple syrup and learn all of the steps required to make maple syrup, from identifying trees to collecting and boiling the sap. They will also have the opportunity to sample maple sugar candy.
Sanchez has been a naturalist at the parks depart-
ment’s Environmental Center for 30 years.

LancasterHistory will reopen for the 2025 season on Tuesday, Jan. 21. The organization will be open from Mondays through Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. to the public. Tours of President James Buchanan’s Wheatland will be available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Research Center will be open from Wednesdays to Fridays and the first Saturday of each month from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for appointments.
“What do these kids want to know about the Vietnam War and the Vietnam era? Almost all of their questions lead to our personal experiences,” he said.
The panel is composed of diverse veterans with varying roles in the conflict. Some were boots on the ground, in the midst of the conflict, while others served in supplies, finance and mechanics. The diversity offers a well-rounded view of the war.
The veterans begin each program by introducing themselves and sharing their backgrounds, including their service during major events like the Tet Offensive and the Brown Water Navy’s patrol of the Mekong Delta. Afterward, students have the opportunity to ask questions and engage directly with the veterans.
At most talks, students share their knowledge of the
war, including experiences such as visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. They often ask questions about post-traumatic stress disorder and Agent Orange, the herbicide used during the war, as well as experiences of “tunnel rats” - soldiers tasked with clearing underground enemy tunnels. The panelists share their stories of danger and survival, offering personal insights into the physical and emotional toll of their service.
The veterans also bring personal memorabilia to display and share with students before and after the panel presentations. Items include photos of the soldiers in their youth along with pieces of their uniforms or objects they kept with them while they served.
Mary Nolt, a social studies teacher at Manheim Central High School, has hosted the
veterans panel for several years.
“My hope is students will grasp the power of living history through the Vietnam veterans panel,” she said.
“These gentlemen always come with a smile and willing and ready to share their stories with the students. …
It is one thing for us to talk about the Vietnam War in history class; it is another for students to interact with and learn from those who lived through this time period in such a unique and special way.”
Along with a presentation at Manheim Central High School that happened earlier this month, the panel presented at Donegal High School, Garden Spot High School and Elizabethtown Area High School in December. January presentations also included dates at Lampeter-Strasburg High School and Cocalico High
School. Upcoming sessions are scheduled for Columbia High School on Friday, March 21, and at Ephrata High School on Tuesday, March 25.
The veterans’ visit is part of the ongoing mission of VVA Chapter 1008 to educate the public about the Vietnam War and honor those who served. The group also participates in community service, such as ringing bells for the Salvation Army during the holidays and sending sympathy cards to families of deceased Vietnam veterans.
Chapter 1008 currently has about 150 members and welcomes new recruits who served on active duty in Vietnam between November 1, 1955, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between August 5, 1964, and May 7, 1975. For more information, visit https://vva.org.
Production to present immigrants’ stories
Grand Pistachio will present “Layer the Walls: Midcentury” on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 1 p.m. at the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville.
“Layer the Walls” is a live theater piece for young audiences focusing on immigration and universal struggles surrounding discrimination. While visiting the Tenement Museum in New York City, the play’s creators learned that 40 layers of wallpaper were found on the walls of an old apartment. Each piece had been applied by a new immigrant family attempting to make the space its own, with every layer filled with hopes, dreams, and stories of survival. As layers of the set are peeled away, the characters’ stories of immigration are revealed.
“Layer the Walls: Mid-Century” spans 1930 to 1970, including stories of
a Chinese father who enters the U.S. and endures 30 years of separation from his family, a young Holocaust survivor who has to adapt to life in New York City, and Puerto Rican sisters who join the Young Lords’ fight for health care equity. These stories are brought to life with rod puppetry, ribbon dancing, masks, Bunraku-style puppetry, shadow puppetry, and original music.
Grand Pistachio creates original theater for young people utilizing puppetry, masks, and music. Its mission is to engage audience empathy and open new ways for young people to view each other, the world, and their role in it. The organization seeks to achieve these aims by highlighting the stories of people who might not be in the history books or cultural records.
The event will include free
preshow children’s activities as part of the season’s Family Fun Fest series. Community organizations and Millersville University student groups will host tables offering children’s crafts and activities that are inspired by the performance. Children will leave with goodie bags filled with their creations. This performance will
feature ASL interpretation, audio description, and sensory-friendly accommodations.

Paws 2 Read
During the school year, LPL conducts its Paws 2 Read program at 10 a.m. on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month at 651 Kissel Hill Road. Over the summer, LPL presents the program three times a month.
Paws 2 Read is free to attend, but registration is encouraged.
“It’s been discovered that youth are reading and doing a lot of reading,” said Payonk. “But they’re not doing much reading out loud. They’re reading, they’re doing a lot of reading, but it’s silent. It’s totally different when you’re reading out loud. We’re trying to get kids used to reading out loud. When they’re doing it, they’re stumbling and uncomfortable.”
“They already know how to read,” she added. “They’re going to get better. We don’t do any teaching.”
Paws 2 Read is designed for young readers ages 4 to 12, but there are no age restrictions placed on participants. The kids, who mainly reside in the War -
wick School District, each spend about 15 minutes reading to the trained therapy dogs.
“Some of the children are struggling in school,” said Payonk. “But it seems like every kid needs help in their aloud reading. Even if a child is reading slowly, the next child will wait patiently. There is so much out there that requires reading. I love to read for just enjoyment. There are a lot of reasons for reading, and everyone has their reasons for reading.”
All of the trained therapy dogs coming to the library are accompanied by their owners or handlers. There are greyhounds, coonhounds, pugs, golden retrievers, poodles and Labradors.
“For some of the kids, it may be their only way to interact with dogs,” said Payonk. “As they read, they’re petting the dog the whole time. You can see how relaxed the dogs are. Some of the dogs are right in the face of the child. Some of them may just lay
down and close their eyes. We tell the children, ‘Your voice is very soothing.’ Sometimes the child will turn the book around to show the dog photos.”
“It doesn’t even have to be real-life dogs,” added Payonk. “It can be stuffed animals, but read out loud. Audiobooks are perfect for people to know how reading out loud is supposed to be.”
Paws 2 Read, which was established in 2003, is very much in line with LPL’s mission to serve the community by promoting reading.
“Just about every library in Lancaster County has dogs coming in,” said Payonk. “All of the public libraries are part of the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Of course, reading and books are good things if we’re helping schools, helping kids and helping families. Reading can be very traumatic for children who are struggling with reading. This is something you do for them. You’re learning,

Army Air Corps veteran to speak
The Military Oral History Club of Lancaster County will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2435, 401 Manor St., Columbia. The speaker will be Frank Stellar. Stellar was drafted into the Army Air Corps in April 1943. After basic training in Greensboro, N.C., he was assigned to the 36th Division, which was sent to Europe to support the Allied air campaign. He spent the last two years of his service
in England and France. Frank recently celebrated his 100th birthday.
