Trend Report Where We’re Going in

On the Radar 4 | RANGE BY SEA | 2023

CLOSE TO HOME CRUISES ARE SATISFYING many travelers yearning to return to the sea. Ports are often less expensive, and no one can deny Alaska’s majesty, New England’s charms, or the rugged beauty of California’s coast. Since most cruise lines sail under foreign flags, they must make a foreign port of call, which is why New England cruises often stop in Montreal; California cruises visit Mexico, and Alaska cruises call on Canada (Lindblad, with four US-flagged ships that sail to Alaska, is the exception). For East Coasters, Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 has a round trip from New York that docks in Boston on July 4th to take in the fireworks over Boston Harbor.

Other travelers are flocking to epic, bucket-list cruises that dock in dozens of ports across multiple continents. When Holland America Line’s 73-day Grand Africa Voyage sold out in 2022, the company added another for 2023, departing in October for the souks of Casablanca, the ancient monuments of Petra, and the beaches of Zanzibar. Regent Seven Seas Cruises has unveiled its longest World Cruise to date. The 154-night 2026 world cruise offers 431 free shore excursions that allow passengers to explore 41 countries across six continents.

NEW IN FOOD & DRINK

Mocktails are still having a moment and mixologists are tapping into the trend with innovative mocktails like Strawberries on Fire, a blend of jalapeño, strawberry, lime juice, and agave that was created by Rob Floyd from TV’s Bar Rescue. Cunard offers Bee-Dazzled, Seedlip Spice 94 blended with honey water and orange juice while Regent’s Mango Mule is a refreshing mix of mango puree, honey, lime, cucumber and ginger ale. Explora is even introducing Club Soda gatherings featuring zero-proof spirits.

LATEST FITNESS CRAZE

It was only a matter of time before pickleball took to the sea and several cruise lines now offer pickleball courts and tournaments. Carnival Conquest was first to build a permanent pickleball court and Holland America, which recently inked a partnership with the Professional Pickleball Association, promises all ships will have designated pickleball courts and complimentary lessons by April 2023.

NEW SHIPS ON THE BLOCK

Several ships are launching this year and there’s nothing like the new ship smell (and bragging rights) of a maiden voyage.

EXPLORA I is the first ship from MSC Group’s new luxury brand, Explora Journeys, which is designed for “slow travelers” who want to “stay longer and travel deeper.” All 461 suites will have floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces EXPLORA I’ s maiden voyage will sail in July 2023 from Southampton to Copenhagen , including an Arctic Circle stop.

On the design front, the grand entry stairway that winds around a pillar of

crystals and lights on Oceania’s new Vista sets the stage for an elegant journey. All-veranda staterooms include a new category: 260 squarefoot staterooms designed for solo travelers. There are also three 2,400 square-foot Owner’s Suites. Vista’ s Founder’s Cruise will sail from Rome in May with stops in Italy, Greece and Croatia.

Seabourn’s new Pursuit is an ultraluxury, purpose-built expedition ship with 132 all-veranda staterooms, including two-story Wintergarden Suites. It features a 26-person expedition team and two custom-

built submarines that will give guests an immersive view of life below the ocean’s surface. Seabourn Pursuit sets sail in the Mediterranean in August.

Celebrity Ascent, launching in December, is the last of the Edge class series. It will carry 3,260 passengers and include Celebrity’s greatest hits: the Magic Carpet cantilevered deck; Infinite Balconies that blur the line between inside and out; and a Rooftop Garden filled with live greenery. Celebrity Ascent will sail from Fort Lauderdale alternating between ports in the Western and Eastern Caribbean.

How to Pick the Perfect Cruise

From sailing on an elegant four-masted schooner to finding a ship that boasts the biggest rollercoaster at sea—you’ve got options

GONE IS THE ERA OF CRUISING when every voyage meant shuffleboard, cocktails with little umbrellas and gutbusting midnight buffets. Today, there are so many options that you can tailor your trip any way you please—it all starts with finding the cruising style that suits you best.

Northstar’s Cruise Classification System has defined six official cruise types: three ocean cruises (luxury, premium and mainstream) and three non-ocean cruises (expedition, river and specialty). Here’s what you need to book the one that’s right for you.

On the Radar 8 | RANGE BY SEA | 2023

LUXURY CRUISES

These ships are like five-star resorts at sea. They’re small to mid-sized with elegant staterooms, gourmet restaurants, exclusive shore excursions, and a high passengerto-crew ratio so guests can be pampered properly. The cruise lines often partner with celebrated chefs like The French Laundry’s Thomas Keller (Seabourn) and Adam Sachs (Silversea). Guests can expect extraordinary moments, like Seabourn’s famed Caviar in the Surf experience in which the crew wades into the ocean to serve passengers caviar and champagne from a surfboard and Silversea’s new culinary program S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste), which lets guests experience local food culture, like pastry making at a Sicilian pasticceria. Many luxury lines, including Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn and Silversea, are all-inclusive.

PREMIUM CRUISES

These cruises are ideal for travelers who appreciate luxury but on a medium-sized ship with more dining and entertainment choices. While they’re a little easier on the budget, there is still an emphasis on refinement and tapping into world-class culinary talent. For instance, Celebrity Cruises has enlisted Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud as its Global Culinary Brand Ambassador and his onboard restaurant Luminae serves a globally inspired menu that includes his signature Chilled Carrot and Ginger Veloute and Moroccan Chicken Tagine. Meanwhile, Holland America Line has established a Culinary Council with heavy hitters like artisanal chocolatier Jacques Torres and chefs David Burke, Ethan Stowell and Andy Matsuda contributing to its Culinary Cruise program.

The recently launched Atlas Ocean Voyages is billing itself as “upper premium” and its two ships call on remote ports in Antarctica and northern Europe (including the Arctic Circle) with fewer than 200 guests for an intimate allinclusive experience.

MAINSTREAM (AKA LARGE SHIP) CRUISES

If theme parks are your thing, you’ll find everything from zip lines and rollercoasters to kids’ clubs and private beach parties on these larger ship cruises. With comfortable cabins and a plethora of activities and dining options to choose from, they’re ideal for family and multi-generational vacationers but even solo travelers like to get in on the fun. Carnival has enlisted celebrity chef Guy Fieri for two restaurants (Guy’s Burger Joint and Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que) while Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines offers several stateroom options, from traditional interiors, ocean-view and balcony staterooms to suites designed specifically for families, private balconies for couples and expansive multi-room suites for groups traveling together.

EXPEDITION CRUISES

These include expedition cruises that sail to more distant ports, such as Antarctica, the Arctic Circle and the Galapagos, and there are often scientists on board who conduct research projects and share their findings. Ship design is often more minimalist, although still comfortable. Lindblad has partnered with National Geographic to build a top-notch expedition team with expert photographers, marine biologists, historians and naturalists. Celebrity Cruises offers expedition cruises in the Galapagos onboard Celebrity Flora —the first all-suites, 100-guest ship designed exclusively for sailing these islands. Certified naturalists from the Galapagos National Park are on board to guide the journey.

RIVER CRUISES

Smaller ships allow you to drift leisurely along the world’s most beautiful waterways, from the Rhine and the Danube to the Nile and the Mekong, and even dock in the center of town, thanks to their maneuverability. With its wellness programs, active excursions and onboard bicycles, AmaWaterways is a great choice for health-conscious cruisers. Its Seven River Journey Through Europe is a 46-night voyage that visits 14 countries, including off-the-beaten-path sites in Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. In 2024, AmaWaterways will introduce cruises down the Magdalena River in Colombia with fewer than 100 passengers on a new all-suite, eco-friendly ship.

Viking announced a new Viking Longship will debut along the Seine River in France in 2025; it’s a purpose-built sister ship to the other four that currently sail along the river. Sailing roundtrip from Paris on Viking’s Paris & the Heart of Normandy itinerary, this eight-day voyage along the Seine celebrates history, art, food and culture in the country’s most dazzling urban and pastoral settings.

SPECIALTY CRUISES

If you’re looking for something completely different, specialty cruises offer a range of ships to choose from, including steamboats, white-masted schooners and ships that commute along coastal waterways. American Queen Voyages’ river steamboats traverse America’s great rivers, including the mighty Mississippi where guests enjoy Creole and Cajun cuisine, while Windstar’s luxurious four-masted schooners and Star Clippers’ five-masted tall ships (inspired by the German ship Preussen , built in 1902) evoke the romance of the legendary sailing ships of the early 20th century.

Hurtigruten’s Norwegian Coastal Express has journeyed the waters of Norway, transporting mail, cargo and passengers, since 1893. The line just brought back its Svalbard Express, which allows guests to experience the midnight sun on the newly renovated MS Trollfjord as it sails along the Norwegian coast to the High Arctic.

ALBANIA

Albania is a small country with a population of about 2.8 million and is often overlooked, despite its sun-kissed coastline, which stretches along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, not to mention secluded beaches and lagoons set against a dramatic backdrop of snow-capped mountains.

From the Riviera-style port of Saranda, you can take a scenic drive to Lekuresi Castle, built in 1537 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, for great views of the town. Visit Berat, famous for its white-washed houses—their many windows earned it the nickname “town of a thousand windows”—and Gjirokastra, one of the most attractive towns in Albania and also a UNESCO site. A trip to Butrint Archaeological Park is a must for its impressive ruins reminiscent of ancient Mycenae and Porto Palermo Castle, which is shaped like a triangle and has remarkable walls that are 60 feet tall.

GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, ECUADOR

To experience a marine version of Jurassic Park, visit the Galapagos islands, 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. These 21 Islands are home to giant tortoises that can weigh up to 450 pounds. You might also spot rare blue-footed boobies along with frolicking sea lions, jumping crabs and the land and water iguanas that sunbathe on the rocks. You can hike, cycle and snorkel at your leisure, although only small cruise ships with fewer than 100 passengers are permitted to cruise the region and only about 20 people per group can embark on land tours at a time.

Some places are just better accessed by sea, especially if you’re looking for an honest-to-goodness, off-the-beaten-path adventure—and one that you can reach without abandoning comfort, style and world-class cuisine. Here are six remote destinations worth charting a course for.

JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia’s oldest city, dates back to the 6th century AD and is most famous for being a gateway to Mecca and Medina, the holiest cities in Islam.

The old town Al-Balad is the heart of the city and recognized by UNESCO. It features a traditional souk marketplace of narrow streets laced with an aroma of spices, incense and coffee. Many of the

DOMINICA, CARIBBEAN

Dominica, located south of Guadeloupe, is known as the “nature island.” It’s famous for its Boiling Lake, which is fed by a volcano and is the second-largest lake of its kind in the world. You can visit geothermal hot springs and black sand beaches or try tubing down the Titou Gorge, hiking the 213-feet Trafalgar Falls or taking an aerial tram ride above the lush jungle. Thanks to the variety of eco-adventures on offer, Travel + Leisure awarded it first place in its list of World’s Best Caribbean islands for 2022.

buildings are painted in turquoise and emerald and some are partly made of coral.

On the waterfront, Al Ramah is called the floating mosque because it’s built on stilts. The iconic exterior is made of white marble and topped by a turquoise dome while inside you’ll find traditional Islamic art and stained glass.

At 1,024 feet high, King Fahd’s fountain is the tallest in the world and is best seen at night when 500 spotlights light up the plume.

GQEBERHA, AFRICA

If you’ve always dreamed of embarking on a safari, why not sail your way to one? Your best bet is a ship that stops in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) in South Africa, situated on Nelson Mandela Bay. Founded in 1820 by British settlers, the port city is a bustling hub of restaurants, shops, art galleries, museums, memorials and marketplaces to explore before you head out on safari.

Many shore excursions to nearby game reserves include 4x4 vehicle adventures to see elephants, rhinoceros, leopards, buffalo and lions (the “big five”), as well as antelope, warthogs, monkeys and more. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, visit Addo Elephant National Park, the third-largest national park in South Africa and home to 600 elephants.

JEJU, SOUTH KOREA

Jeju in South Korea has it all: dramatic volcanic landscapes, mysterious caves, impressive cliffs, magnificent waterfalls and gorgeous beaches.

Mount Hallasan, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a dormant volcano that created a spectacular crater lake, the Jusangjeolli cliff with its unusual honeycomb surface and a lava tube with a 4.5-mile-long cave. If you enjoy waterfalls, Cheonjeyeon is a three-level waterfall that cascades into what’s known as the Pond of God for its purported healing powers. Also visit Samseonghyeol Shrine, which is situated in a pine forest, and Yakcheonsa Temple, renowned for its colorful decor.

If you’re lucky, you’ll get a chance to buy fresh seafood from Jeju’s amazing women divers, who harvest abalone, octopus, conch and more from the sea floor without scuba gear—they dive about 100 feet below the waves and can hold their breath for up to three minutes.

ANTARCTICA

Set sail for what’s literally one of the coolest places on Earth –Antarctica—to see epic ice-scapes, towering turquoise icebergs and magnificent wildlife, including up to 10 types of whales, such as Humpback, Killer, Fin, Minke, as well as five different penguin species that live on the continent. The world’s biggest sheet of ice is about 1.2 miles thick, and you can head ashore by Zodiac to explore it like a true adventurer.

Depending on your interests, cruise lines offer trekking, sea kayaking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, climbing and even scuba diving and camping. You might also be able to tour an important meteorological research station. (Some cruise lines are only permitted to cruise the region, while others are allowed landings.)

If you’re not sure about cruising the infamous Drake Passage, notorious for being one of the roughest waters in the world, consider a Polar-class expedition ship, depending on the weather, or a line that offers a charter flight over the area instead.

There is no end to the wonders you can experience when you arrive by sea—the whole world awaits!

Myth #1: It’s safer on land

Top Cruise Myths Debunked

We separate fact from fiction to help you plan your next holiday

FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T CRUISED BEFORE — and even for some who have—taking to the water to travel the world can spark a lot of questions. Will I get seasick? Do I have to wear a tie to dinner? How much of the world will I actually see? It doesn’t help that there are also a lot of myths and misconceptions out there—here are eight of the biggest, debunked for good.

REALITY: Today’s cruise ships are built according to strict rules and regulations and are tested extensively during sea trials before launching. From the captain to the engineers, crew undergo extensive training and licensing. A study by consultancy firm GP Wild found that while worldwide cruise ship capacity grew by more than 68 percent from 2009 to 2019, the number of operational incidents decreased by 41 percent, making cruise lines’ safety record ahead of other modes of leisure transportation, according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). And the CLIA routinely reviews operational procedures to improve safety processes and technology. Passengers must attend safety muster drills, and report to their muster stations before the ship can sail. Meanwhile, if you become ill or injured while on board, almost all cruise ships are equipped with a medical facility staffed with a doctor and nurses.

Myth #2:

Myth #3: Cruising is for a certain demographic

REALITY: Ships come in all sizes—from 300 to 7,000 passengers—and there are itineraries for everyone, whether you’re a family with children, traveling as a couple or going solo. According to the CLIA, the average age of cruise takers is 47. Here’s the general breakdown by age: 14 percent are under 19; 20 percent are 20 to 39; 32 percent are 40 to 59; 33 percent are over 60.

Myth #4: You’ll be seated with total strangers

Life

gets boring after days at sea

REALITY: You can be as busy as you like. Ships offer plenty of things to keep you entertained, from mixology classes and live performances to simulated surfing, although there’s no obligation to attend. While there are lots of opportunities to return home with a new skill, you can also just relax by the pool, enjoy the spa facilities and go with the flow. Cruise ships are like actionpacked resorts at sea—they have it all.

REALITY: Dining at sea is like strolling down your favorite street where there’s a different restaurant on every corner. You can usually reserve a table or just show up whenever you please. When it comes to dining companions, it’s entirely up to you—you can sit with a group and make new friends or enjoy a quiet meal on your own.

Myth #5: You have to dress up for dinner

REALITY: While there is often a formal night for those who want to get fancy, it’s not mandatory. Smart casual wear is recommended in most restaurants, bars, casinos and venues (unless you’re dining al fresco or poolside).

16 | RANGE BY SEA | 2023
PHOTOGRAPHY NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINES RANGE BY SEA | 2023 | 17

Myth #6: You’ll probably get seasick

REALITY: Cruise ships have extensive stabilizers to minimize motion. However, if you’re worried at all, pack some anti-nausea medication or patches (these are also often available at the gift shop or medical center on board).

Myth #7: Most of the time is spent on the ship

REALITY: Cruising is an easy way to conquer the best of your bucket list. Choose a line that includes long or overnight stays in a destination to see and experience more—such as an African safari, after-hours tour of the Louvre or champagne breakfast at the edge of Mount Everest.

Myth #8: Cruising is cost prohibitive

REALITY: The average cost of a cruise varies by ship, destination and trip length but there are options for every budget. Cruising gives you the opportunity to visit several destinations without having to pack and unpack or change your accommodation, making this type of travel more effortless and affordable than your average land vacation. Depending on what you’re looking for when it comes to alcoholic beverages, excursions, entertainment and restaurants, you can opt for a basic cruise fare and pay à la carte, purchase packages or choose an all-inclusive trip. Your travel advisor can recommend the best option based on your needs, interests and budget.

While drinks such as water, juice, coffee and tea are included, alcohol may not be. It’s a good idea to review the drinks’ package and compare it to what you would pay à la carte. Drink package prices range from sodas and wine and beer only to all-inclusive packages featuring premium wines and spirits—some include unlimited drinking. Wi-Fi, shore excursions and special onboard experiences, such as go-kart racing or simulated skydiving, often cost extra, but many cruise lines bundle excursions and experiences into packages with great discounts, especially if you book prior to cruising.

Overwhelmed by the options? Here’s how an Ensemble travel advisor can curate a cruise that’s right for you

On the Radar 20 | RANGE BY SEA | 2023

YOU CAN

HAVE IT ALL

aboard a cruise ship: access to remote destinations, unlimited adventures on both land and sea, your pick of world-class restaurants. All this choice can be a blessing—and a curse. There are more than 50 cruise lines and 270 ships worldwide, and a travel advisor can help you find the one that’s meant for you, so all you need to do is plan what to pack.

SAVE TIME AND REDUCE STRESS

You can spend hours searching for itineraries, flights, travel insurance and hotels for stays before or after the cruise. An advisor will do all of that for you. They also take on all the extra research that goes into trip planning on your behalf, from sussing out baggage allowances to determining what documents and insurance you may need. They can also share detailed information about ships, the destinations they visit and what kind of cruise experience you can expect. Then, they’ll make all the arrangements pre- and post-cruise to ensure you have a smooth, stress-free holiday.

GET ACCESS TO AN EXCLUSIVE NETWORK

Thanks to on-location partners and firsthand travel experience, advisors have close ties to a world of destinations and can open the door to exclusive opportunities you wouldn’t necessarily find on your own. They know how to find the best pricing available through their network of suppliers and can provide first access to sales and special promotional offers, including cabin or flight upgrades, shipboard credits and early booking discounts, which may not be readily available to the public.

ENJOY PERSONALIZED, ATTENTIVE SERVICE

Building a relationship and asking the right questions is key to helping guide travelers to the experience best-suited to them. Advisors take the time to get to know you so they can customize your trip. They also share tips from their own experiences (like suggesting you arrive at the embarkation point of your cruise a day early, for peace of mind) or their favorite hidden gems. Based on feedback received from past clients, they have the inside track on what passengers liked and disliked about their trips and will use that info to help guide your trip planning.

STAY ON BUDGET

Navigating all the different package and price options available can feel overwhelming but from choosing your cabin and drinks package to booking your shore excursions, advisors will find the best fit for your budget. They’ll also suggest ways to stretch your travel dollars, such as traveling during less expensive, off-peak seasons and taking advantage of group discounts for friends and family members vacationing with you.

TRUST A PRO

Travel advisors are industry experts who come equipped with a combination of formal education, such as courses through accredited colleges, and first-hand knowledge of destinations and the travel industry as a whole. An advisor is there to support you throughout your trip and can step in to solve problems if there are any hiccups along the way (like if you lose your passport, for instance). Planning your cruise with an advisor helps guarantee that every journey is as seamless as possible, from the moment you leave home to the time you return.
