Life’s a Beach

For many North Americans, traveling south offers a beguiling mix of local culture, warm sun and golden sand. So, it’s no wonder that eight of the top ten trending destinations for 2024 are within splashing distance of the beach. That list, from a recent travel report based on data gleaned from flight bookings, includes Athens, Cancún, Punta Cana, San Juan and Oranjestad, Aruba. If you’re having trouble picking a spot, our Caribbean festival guide (page 16) will help you locate a legendary party. We also spotlight some of the world’s best lesser-known beaches (page 6) and consult the experts (page 22) for tips on making your family sun holiday a hit, whether you’re arriving by plane or by ship. Now, we’re off to the beach!

What’s new and noteworthy for sun-and-sand seekers.

Cruise to a Private-island Paradise

Your Caribbean cruise could be the gateway to an exclusive island getaway. Five new cruise line-backed private islands or beach clubs are set to open within the next two years, according to Cruise Lines International Association. Building on the success of destinations like Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay (pictured) and Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Cay, more cruise lines are redefining “all-inclusive” with these retreats featuring beaches, water parks, restaurants and bars. Look out for Carnival Cruise Line’s Celebration Key and Royal Caribbean’s Royal Beach Club Paradise Island, both set to welcome guests in 2025.

Three Hot New Stays

CAESARS REPUBLIC SCOTTSDALE

This modern, 11-story property features a sleek glass exterior, 265 guestrooms, two restaurants by celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis and striking views of Camelback Mountain.

SECRETS PLAYA BLANCA COSTA MUJERES

World of Hyatt’s new adults-only all-inclusive resort is nestled on a secluded strip of Caribbean coastline 12 miles north of Cancún. With four pools, including two seafront infinity pools, and activities from beach volleyball to cocktail classes, plenty of fun in the sun awaits.

SIRO ONE ZA’ABEEL

Dubai’s first fitness hotel, spanning six floors of the iconic One Za’abeel, is every health enthusiast’s dream. Rooms are outfitted with thermoregulated mattresses, stretching bars and on-demand virtual workout classes, while hotel amenities include state-of-the-art Fitness and Recovery Labs and access to two pools (including the UAE’s longest infinity pool).

Ask your advisor about Ensemble Exclusive Amenities at these properties.

The World’s Best Beach is in Bora Bora

The island of Bora Bora has been awarded the Golden Beach Award 2024 by BeachAtlas, an online guide made for and by beach enthusiasts. To create its annual list of the top 100 beaches on the planet, the London-based platform looked at factors beyond natural beauty, including the beaches’ value to the local community, lifestyle offerings like nightlife and resorts, and cultural significance. A panel of international travel experts and influencers then cast their votes to decide the final list. With its pristine white sand and breathtaking turquoise lagoon fringed by a protected barrier reef, it’s no wonder this French Polynesian paradise claimed the number-one spot. Find eight more extraordinary beaches on page 6.

Cheers to Booze-free Cocktails at Sea

On your next Seabourn voyage, raise your glass and make a toast with a zero-proof Amalfi Spritz — alcohol-free rosé paired with fragrant Lyre’s Italian Orange and soda water. This is just one of the elevated mocktails available across all onboard bars and lounges, courtesy of the cruise line’s new Zero @ Sea mixology program. The menu stars flavorful nonalcoholic ingredients such as elderflower, fresh citrus and botanical spirits, so you can always have a delicious beverage at hand, no matter your preferences.

8 Best-kept Secret Beaches

From a black-sand paradise in Puerto Rico to a secluded swimming cove in Mallorca, these under-the-radar beaches will leave you equal parts amazed and refreshed.

PHOTO:

Gibson Steps

Victoria, Australia

The Twelve Apostles, a group of seven towering limestone stacks jutting out of the ocean in Port Campbell National Park, are famed for their rugged beauty. But just down the road, the beach at Gibson Steps is a less-frequented stretch of golden sand with its own pair of craggy pillars: Gog and Magog. At low tide, descend the 86-step staircase to the beach, taking in the ancient offshore sea stacks on one side and 230-foot-tall cliffs on the other.

DON’T MISS

The Gibson Steps sit along one of the most scenic drives in the world, the Great Ocean Road, which runs between dozens of natural attractions like the Grotto, a strange combination of cave, archway and sinkhole.

Cala d’Estellencs

Mallorca, Spain

More of a pebbly cove than a traditional beach, Cala d’Estellencs and its boathouses built directly into the rocky cliffs will make you feel like you’ve gone back in time. The secluded fishing harbor and swimming destination is an hour’s walk from the village of Estellencs, or a one-hour drive from Palma, and promises clear water perfect for exploring the underwater caves. There’s also a snack stand, Bar Sa Punteta, where you can sip an Aperol spritz and gaze out over the sea.

DON’T MISS

There are no shower facilities on site, but, when there’s enough water flowing, you can rinse off in the Torrent de Son Fortuny, a small waterfall that ripples from the rock face.

PHOTO: TOLO/ADOBE STOCK.

Playa Negra

Vieques, Puerto Rico

Most Caribbean beaches have white or golden sand, but not Playa Negra on the small Puerto Rican island of Vieques. The sheltered beach, just a five-minute drive from the town of Esperanza, gets its name from its black sand, a result of volcanic bedrock on Monte Pirata (the grains are even magnetic!). It provides a dramatic backdrop for a beach stroll or horseback riding, a popular activity on the island.

DON’T MISS

While on Vieques, take a nighttime kayak tour through Mosquito Bay, the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world — it contains up to 700,000 microscopic dinoflagellates per gallon of water.

4

Spiaggia di Scilla

Calabria, Italy

Spiaggia di Scilla (a.k.a. Scilla Beach) is nestled in the heart of a charming fishing village that rises up from the surrounding cliffs. It’s popular among Calabrians on summer weekends, when colorful umbrellas dot the pebbled shoreline. Since it’s located right in town, this beach is within walking distance of several restaurants where you can dine on the local speciality, swordfish, served in sandwiches and atop pasta.

DON’T MISS

Castello Ruffo, a fortress that has acted as both a lighthouse and a monastery, is visible from the beach and about a 10-minute walk away. (Selfguided tours cost two euros and take less than an hour.)

PHOTO: TOMMASO LIZZUL/ADOBE STOCK.

Nyang Nyang Beach

Uluwatu, Bali

In 2010, when Bali starred alongside Julia Roberts in Eat Pray Love, the island’s beach-shoot location, Padang Padang, became a big-time tourist attraction. Just down the road, the equally lovely Nyang Nyang Beach remains a hidden gem set below forested cliffs, complete with surfable waves and warungs (family-run shops) where you can rent loungers and buy drinks. Getting there — a steep scooter ride to the parking lot followed by a 20-minute walk — is well worth the effort.

DON’T MISS

Walk east on the beach at low tide for just over a mile and you’ll come to neighboring Nunggalan Beach, which features a half-buried graffiti’d shipwreck.

Princess Margaret Beach

Bequia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Beloved by both locals and tourists, the former Tony Gibbons Beach was renamed after Queen Elizabeth II’s sister, Princess Margaret, took a dip in its still turquoise waters. The stretch of white sand is one of the best sunset-viewing spots on Bequia: Enjoy a relaxing afternoon on a rented lounge chair, then watch as the sky turns from blue to vibrant pink.

DON’T MISS

Sip a Margaret’s Margarita and tuck into plantain chips, ceviche or a blackened tuna burger at Jack’s Beach Bar. Upstairs, book a massage overlooking the water at Sunny Spa.

PHOTO: LISA FLUDZINSKI/STOCKSY.

Makua Beach

O‘ahu, Hawai‘i

When you imagine a Hawaiian paradise, you probably envision something like Makua Beach with its blue-green waters and verdant mountain backdrop. Located on the west side of O‘ahu, about a 1.5-hour drive from Honolulu, this locals’ spot is known for strong currents and rolling waves, making it ideal for surfing. Families with young kids — and anyone looking for calmer waters — should stick to the tide pools at low tide, and keep an eye out for pods of dolphins swimming near shore.

DON’T MISS

The trailhead for Upper Makua Cave is located across the street from the beach. Carved into the rock face overlooking the ocean, the cave is the optimal spot for watching the sunset.

Windmill Beach

Simon’s Town, South Africa

Boulders Beach is a must-see near Cape Town thanks to the distinct granite boulders that stud its shore and the colony of African penguins that calls it home. But this means it can also be crowded — and smelly. For a similar view without the tuxedoed birds, head to nearby Windmill Beach. Its rock formations are just as impressive and the calm, crystal-clear water is great for diving, snorkeling and kayaking. 

DON’T MISS

Miller’s Point Tidal Pool is a 10-minute drive away and kids will love slipping down its small waterslide into the shallow waters.

Jamaica Food & Drink Festival

November 7 to 10 KINGSTON, JAMAICA

Some of Jamaica’s best chefs and wine and spirits experts will come together for the 10th annual celebration of the island’s rich food and drink culture. There are several marquee pre-festival events: If you’re in Kingston on October 8, don’t miss Saveur, the multi-course, wine-paired tasting menu at Broken Plate, a rooftop restaurant where chef Damion Stewart serves up inventive, locally inspired dishes like oxtail wonton and curried goat pasta. During the festival dates in November, visitors can experience a buzzing craft market in downtown Kingston and an intimate meal at the Jamaica Food and Drink Kitchen prepared by José Mendín from Miami’s Pubbelly Sushi and Mathieu Masson-Duceppe of Cooking Channel’s Fire Masters.

Antigua and Barbuda Art Week

November 27 to December 3

PRIMARILY ST. JOHN’S, ANTIGUA, BUT ALSO ON BARBUDA

As if Antigua’s 365 beaches weren’t picturesque enough, the second annual Antigua and Barbuda Art Week celebrates the country’s visual arts, fashion, music, film and dance scenes. This year’s edition will feature an exhibition of local artists’ work, as well as performances, artist showcases, screenings, art walks, studio tours and community events on both islands: During last year’s Art Hop, visitors met three artists working in studios near Barbuda’s stunning Codrington Lagoon. The festival also hosts an artist-led Paint, Sip & Eat event, where you can grab a brush and create your own work of art inspired by the islands’ lush landscapes. OPENING PAGE

Sugar Mas, in Saint Kitts and Nevis, is an allday celebration fit for all ages.

Sugar Mas (Saint Kitts and Nevis National Carnival)

December 13, 2024, to January 2, 2025

BASSETERRE, SAINT KITTS AND NEVIS

The first epic Carnival of 2025 officially kicks off this December, and you can catch pre-Carnival events, like musical competitions, even earlier. Sugar Mas offers the inimitable music and artistry that experienced revelers expect of any Caribbean Carnival: steel pan drums, soca fêtes and parades of intricately costumed masqueraders. Here, Carnival also celebrates local artisans — find last-minute gifts like perfumes, clothing and masquerade-friendly accessories at the Midnight Escape Street Festival, held on Christmas Eve. Sugar Mas runs right into the New Year, making the dual-island nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis the perfect place to ring in 2025.

Fiestas de la Calle

San Sebastián

January 16 to 19, 2025

OLD SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO

Held the third weekend of January, the San Sebastián Street Festival closes out la Navidad, the country’s extended Christmas season. Known as “la SanSe,” Old San Juan’s beloved cultural celebration (and the island’s largest festival) is mostly celebrated in the streets: Nearly half a million locals and visitors gather for the parades, dancing and live bomba, plena and salsa music. There’s also a street market and Puerto Rican street food like empanadillas, bacalaitos and tostones, plus concerts and parties that ensure the festivities continue long after sundown.

Trinidad and Tobago Carnival

February 25 to March 5, 2025 PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

Dubbed “The Greatest Show on Earth,” Trinidad and Tobago Carnival brings droves of costumed revelers together to play mas (masquerade) in a tradition that calls back to the islands’ resistance to slavery. These are some of the biggest fêtes, most elaborate costumes and most joyfully strenuous activities of any Caribbean Carnival. Expect all-day parties like Soca Brainwash and gatherings like J’ouvert (French for “daybreak”), which kicks off the two official days of Carnival processions with a pre-dawn, paint-soaked street celebration. Warm-up events include the Soaka Arts & Music Festival, where you can watch steel pan bands compete or dance at an all-night soca party.

St. Maarten

Heineken Regatta

March 6 to 9, 2025

SIMPSON BAY, SINT MAARTEN

The 45th edition of this renowned regatta is expected to attract more than 20,000 visitors, and it’s easy to see why the event is so popular: Sint Maarten’s beautifully clear, warm waters and cooling northeast trade winds make for optimal race conditions. If you’re not competing, watch the action from the official Spectator Boat, which offers breakfast, lunch and an open bar. There’s more fun to be had on dry land: Regatta Village, hosted at Port de Plaisance Resort, turns into a nightly music festival featuring some of the Caribbean’s top artists (reggae legends Kevin Lyttle, Rupee and Tarrus Riley were all headliners in 2024).

Nassau Paradise Island Wine & Food Festival

March 12 to 16, 2025

PARADISE ISLAND, THE BAHAMAS

This year, The Bahamas’ largest-ever culinary celebration brought world-famous chefs Martha Stewart, José Andrés and Nobu Matsuhisa (and musicians like Wyclef Jean) together for five days of mouth-watering events at Atlantis, the luxury oceanside resort on Paradise Island, off of Nassau. The 2025 lineup includes two of the resort’s own stars: Michael White, of the Italianinspired Paranza, and JJ Johnson, of the new Afro-Caribbean restaurant Fieldtrip. Events like Jerk Jam (honoring the smoky, spicy seasoning) and Taste of Paradise let attendees try fare from many different Bahamian restaurateurs.

Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival

April 30 to May 12, 2025

IN AND AROUND CASTRIES, SAINT LUCIA

If the lineup for next spring’s Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival is anything like this year’s, you’ll want to book your trip to Saint Lucia right now. Performers at the 2024 event included jazz luminaries Samara Joy and John Patitucci, soca stars Machel Montano and Voice, Dominican singer-songwriter Michele Henderson (pictured), Afropop heavyweight Davido and the R&B singer, songwriter and producer Babyface. Saint Lucian musicians take center stage, too, making for one of the most culturally rich music festivals in the Caribbean. It’s also a great way to see more of the island, including the 44-acre Pigeon Island National Landmark, home to ruins of military buildings, sandy beaches and panoramic views from historic Fort Rodney. 

Fun in the Sun for Everyone

A traveling family’s guide to successful sun vacations, whether you’ve got a baby on board or the whole multigenerational crew.

ABOVE

A young traveler finds new perspective in the window seat.

OPPOSITE PAGE

The beach is the perfect place to forge those early family vacation memories.

swim up to the pool’s edge for a sip of rosé, the condensation on my glass glistening under the afternoon sun. Nearby, in the shade, my husband cuts a slice off the enormous wedge of Salers cheese we bought at the market that morning. Surrounded by plane trees and rustic stone walls in the backyard of the private villa we booked in southern France, it’s just us — until I hear a babble from the baby monitor. Our eight-month-old is up from his nap, and it’s time for this trio to head out for more exploring.

Before having my son, travel was a huge part of my life, for work, vacation and adventure. And, like many parents these days, it still is. “Families are traveling everywhere,” says Miami-based travel advisor Shaiy Howard. “Since the pandemic, people are just trying to go — whatever their budget, they’re trying to do it.”

Though taking off can be more complicated (the miles-long

packing lists, the messed-up sleep schedules and, oh boy, the flights), the memories always outweigh the struggles. So, whether you’re dreaming of heading south or ocean-hopping, here are some expert tips for cutting the stress of family travel.

FOR INFANTS AND TODDLERS

For your first trip with your newest travel buddy, an all-inclusive resort is a great option — because the less you need to coordinate, the better. “Some all-inclusives even have diapers, playpens and baby food,” says Howard, “because they know that trying to pack and make sure you have everything is stressful in itself.” When my son was taking bottles, having a sanitizer waiting in our room at Sensira Resort & Spa, in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, was a godsend. On another Mexican trip, we stayed at Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit in Nuevo Vallarta, where there is a dedicated baby concierge who arranged all the baby gear. It’s a good idea to call or email in advance (or ask your travel advisor to) to confirm what the resort has on hand.

To keep a toddler (or two) busy, look for a resort with a splash pad, waterslide or dedicated activities like crafts and shows. During our stay at Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit, there were daily picnics with appearances from Toy Story’s Woody, Frozen’s Elsa and more.

ABOVE, LEFT TO RIGHT

Check if your hotel or resort supplies beach toys and accessories, so you can avoid packing your own; look for a destination with a combo of indoor and outdoor attractions — Dubai is one (unexpected) option.

Some resorts have clubs for kids as young as six months with nurseries and special play areas, such as Southern California’s Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, while others offer babysitting services, like the Dominican Republic’s Eden Roc Cap Cana.

And don’t overlook conveniences for yourself: “Smaller resorts are great because you often get better service,” says Winnipeg-based travel advisor Cindy Gaudet. Indeed, at Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit (Nuevo Vallarta is one of Gaudet’s favorite hot spots for young families), getting breakfast — and coffee! — delivered to our suite every morning made up for the fact that our son woke up much earlier than I’d typically like to on vacation. Another must-have: “A balcony,” says Gaudet. “When the baby is sleeping, at least you can sit outside.”

FOR OLDER KIDS

ABOVE, LEFT TO RIGHT

The beach is an endless source of wonder for young children — just don’t forget the sunscreen; more mature kids can get wrapped up in planning a visit to a major attraction such as the Louvre.

Cue the core memories: As kids get older, they can better appreciate and enjoy cities and urban travel. The French Riviera and Barcelona have both been big hits for Gaudet’s clients with big kids, while Howard is currently planning a trip to Dubai for a family. Beaches, parks, museums and aquariums — look for a destination with a combination of indoor and outdoor kid-friendly attractions.

Wherever you go, Gaudet recommends building hype with your

kids in the lead-up, so they have something to look forward to. For her own trip to Paris with her seven-year-old granddaughter, Gaudet went online to show her what to expect: “She had the whole visual: how many hours the plane ride would be, where we were staying. Her aspiration of the trip was seeing the Eiffel Tower, and she had that excitement of doing it.” Gaudet also recommends taking a Google Maps tour around your accommodation to check for parks, cafés, grocery stores — all things that come in handy with kids.

Of course, faraway destinations mean longer flights. “Try to do a night flight so they’re sleeping most of the time,” says Howard. And if you’ve got siblings on board, resist the urge to consolidate snacks and activities (books, games, a tablet). Instead, give them each their own backpack. “That way, they’re not bothering each other,” says Howard. “Packing things separately cuts down on some of the bickering.”

ABOVE

Some resorts offer activities and services (such as day camps) for a range of different age groups.

OPPOSITE PAGE

The cruise terminal in Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos, provides walkable access to miles of white-sand beaches.

FOR MULTI-GENERATIONAL GROUPS

“There’s something for everybody on a cruise,” says Gaudet, pointing to day camps for littles, and cooking classes, art galleries, live music and more for parents and grandparents. The wide array of activities means that everyone gets a chance to craft their own itinerary, while still leaving room for bonding: “Mealtimes are always a way to catch up and have quality time together,” says Gaudet. Plus, on a cruise, you get opportunities to explore at each stop. For families, Gaudet recommends calm ports of call where you can walk around without necessarily committing to an excursion, such as Saint Kitts, Saint Thomas, Turks and Caicos, and Sint Maarten. She also makes sure to book cruises that don’t involve tendering, meaning there’s no smaller boat needed to get you from the ship to the dock. “Say little Johnny is tired and needs a nap, you can just walk back to the ship, instead of being stuck,” she explains. With smaller rooms on cruises, you can split up kids between adults — just make sure to request nearby or adjoining rooms (your travel advisor can often help through their connections, says Howard). And to get a real look at a cruise and see if it’s right for your family, go online, says Gaudet. “If you want to see a cabin, it doesn’t matter what ship — someone has a YouTube video.” 

Don’t Forget to Pack…

Three not-so-obvious lifesavers for traveling with kids

TRACKING DEVICES

“Pre-AirTag era, I lost so many things at airports,” says travel advisor Shaiy Howard. She recommends popping tiny trackers in checked luggage, your stroller and kids’ backpacks to help you keep tabs on everything. AirTags, US$99 for four, apple.com

CHILDREN’S MEDICATION (AND MEDICAL INSURANCE!)

Pack a few over-the-counter meds and make sure your insurance is up to date so you’re ready for fever, allergies, motion sickness, viruses and more. “Who’s to say my kid isn’t going to get an ear infection because it didn’t drain properly?” says travel advisor Cindy Gaudet. “That can ruin a whole holiday.”

BLACKOUT TENT

A great travel investment: a blackout tent that fits over a mini crib or toddler cot. It’s especially handy if you’re sharing a room so that you can keep the lights on while your little one snoozes. SlumberPod with Fan, US$199, slumberpod.com
