Continental Shift
On your next trip across the pond, skip the crowds and clichés in favor of the roads, cities and lakes less traveled. In this issue of Range Best, we venture beyond the capitals in search of the charm and culture that awaits in some of Europe’s calmer — but just as vibrant — corners (page 6).
To splash things up, we leave the city behind for the peace of mind that can only be found lakeside, whether when boarding a historic steamboat in view of the Swiss Alps or taking in crystalline vistas from a medieval Italian fortress (page 16). For your next family adventure, we explore why you should consider Copenhagen, where fairy-tale canals teem with activities and trampolines are built into the boardwalk (page 10).

Visit the 2025 European Capitals of Culture
Chemnitz, Germany, and Nova Gorica, Slovenia, are the European Capitals of Culture for 2025. Awarded by the European Union, this title signals a year-long celebration of each destination’s artistic and cultural diversity. Chemnitz (pictured), which comprises 38 towns and municipalities, will host a summer festival at Stadthallenpark featuring jazz, folk and classical concerts, children’s programs, slam poetry sessions and yoga workshops. In Nova Gorica, take part in gastronomic workshops where you can learn to make gubana, a fruitcake delicacy from the Natisone Valleys, where Slovenia borders Italy.
Coming Soon: 3 Museums on Our Radar
MUSEUM OF SHAKESPEARE, LONDON
Be transported to London’s Curtain Playhouse, a cultural hub in William Shakespeare’s time, at this Shoreditch museum set within the historic theater’s archeological remains. Situated nearly 10 feet underground, the immersive, interactive experience will take visitors back to 1598, illuminating a day in the life of the Bard himself.
FENIX, ROTTERDAM
Inspired by stories of migration from around the world, this museum is housed in a former warehouse on the Maas River harbor, which overlooks the wharves where millions departed for North America, including Albert Einstein and artist Willem de Kooning.
DRIFT MUSEUM, AMSTERDAM
Artist duo Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta of Studio Drift will soon have a permanent home for their large-scale, technologically advanced works and drone performances within the Van Gendt Hallen, an industrial complex in the heart of Amsterdam.

Windstar Cruises Launches Sailings from London
Starting May 2026, Windstar Cruises’ all-suite motor yacht, Star Pride, will set sail from its new home port in London, next door to the Royal Navy’s HMS Belfast. The small-ship luxury cruise line will operate three “taster” cruises, including a short-but-sweet three-day getaway to the medieval streets and chocolateries of Antwerp and Bruges.
Two longer itineraries will take travelers on a 10-day tour of Norway’s scenic fjords, and a 13-day journey from Belgium to Norway. When guests are not exploring glaciers or guildhalls, aboard the 312-passenger ship, a spa, theater and yoga classes offer a variety of ways to unwind.

A Book to Inspire Your Mediterranean Roamings
When you think of holidaying in the Mediterranean, hiking might not immediately come to mind — but Cam Honan’s latest book will change that. In this coffee-table tome, the long-distance adventurer spotlights more than 25 hiking routes in countries along the Mediterranean Sea, including Spain’s Caminito del Rey and the Selvaggio Blu trail in Italy.

What to Know About Europe’s New Visa-waiver System
Set to launch mid-2025, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will require travelers from more than 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) to register before short-term stays in 30 European countries. The travel authorization costs seven euros for people aged 18 to 70 and is valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Since it can take up to 30 days for approval, you’ll want to register well in advance of your trip — your travel advisor can help!
Destinations Less Traveled

By Lauren Ballem
Paris, Rome and Barcelona are superstar cities, but they have the crowds to match. Here are five under-the-radar spots that offer a similar cultural experience, minus the jostling and long lines.
PHOTO: EIRIK SKARSTEIN/UNSPLASH (SVETI NIKOLA BEACH, BUDVA, MONTENEGRO).

INSTEAD OF DUBROVNIK
Budva, Montenegro
As summertime approaches, Europe is once again at the top of travel wish lists. International tourist arrivals in 2024 rose seven percent over the previous year, and numbers continue to rise. Some European cities, meanwhile, are taking steps to ease the population pressure. Last year, Venice introduced a controversial entry fee for day trippers; Amsterdam put a limit on permits for souvenir shops to save space for bookstores and cafes and preserve local character; and some officials are strictly regulating short-term rentals. But fear not: Europe is chock-full of less-visited locales that serve up food, art and culture galore, not to mention extra room to move. It’s an if-youknow-you-know situation, and you’re about to: Here are five alternative European destinations to consider this summer.
Medieval neighborhoods, sandy beaches, a bumping nightlife and terra-cotta rooftops set against the turquoise Adriatic — this small coastal town has it all, minus the crush of tourists. “Budva is home to 35 beaches and a stunning walled city,” says Vancouver-based travel advisor McKenzie McMillan. “It easily matches the historic sites of Dubrovnik, but also rivals any Croatian destination for a contemporary experience, with beach parties, alternative pubs and classic nightclubs that attract some of the world’s best DJs.” Budva’s Old Town, Stari Grad, is enclosed by Venetian walls and the Citadela, where you’ll find sweeping views of the sea framed by mountains, along with a restaurant and library of mysterious artifacts.
INSTEAD OF MADRID Santiago
de Compostela
Northwest Spain is at the very top of Diana Hechler’s list. The travel advisor based in Larchmont, New York, suggests heading north from Madrid by car into the Galicia region toward its capital, Santiago de Compostela. The town dates back to the ninth century and is the culmination of the Camino de Santiago Catholic pilgrimage. “It takes a little effort to get there, but these places are definitely not on the typical tourist itinerary,” Hechler says. On your way there, make a stop in Astorga to gaze up at an episcopal palace designed by Gaudí. Hechler also touts the city’s surrounding regions: “There are terraced hillsides and beautiful canyons as you wend your way down the side of the mountain toward the river, passing vineyards and little bodegas where you can sip wine.”

INSTEAD OF PARIS Strasbourg, France
Paris may be a shimmering international city, but Michelin-starred restaurants, proximity to wineries along the Alsatian wine trail and a laid-back vibe make the capital of the Grand Est region a must-visit, says Hechler: “You’ve got half-timbered houses, French food and wine, beautiful country hotels and vineyards all around.” The gothic cathedral, completed in 1439, is the sixth-tallest church in the world — spectacular views are a given. Other treasures await inside, like an astronomical clock with a mechanical rooster and animatronic apostles. Colmar, a short train ride away, is an easy day trip with its placid canals, French-meets-German architecture dating to the 15th century and annual wine festival in late July.
INSTEAD OF AMSTERDAM Ghent, Belgium
This city has plenty of peaceful canals, and a more easygoing pace for its many pedestrians and cyclists. “Amsterdam is a bustling city, while Ghent is more like a serene waterside town,” says Alli Allen, an Atlanta-based travel advisor. Like Amsterdam, Ghent has a vibrant art community, a youthful vibe (thanks to its university) and a food scene starring Belgian staples, abundant fine-dining options and renowned artisanal praline shops: “You’ll find waffles, chocolate and famous beers,” says Allen. While tulips and gabled houses scream Amsterdam, Ghent is known for its gardens and beautifully preserved medieval architecture, including the 12th-century Gravensteen Castle and the city’s 14th-century belfry.

INSTEAD OF PRAGUE Kraków, Poland
Rushing rivers, stunning architecture, a rich cultural scene — Kraków has all of Prague’s appeal with a more intimate ambience, says Allen. The Old Town is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its medieval market square, Rynek Główny, is the largest in Europe. “Compared to Prague, Kraków’s Old Town has a more relaxed feel. You can enjoy its quaint streets without feeling crowded,” Allen adds. Kraków also has many museums, castles and markets to discover. Pack your appetite and snag an obwarzanek krakowski from a street vendor — Poland’s version of a bagel is braided, boiled and sprinkled with salt or seeds — or snack on pączki (sugar-dusted Polish doughnuts) and, of course, pierogi-loaded plates.

Familyfriendly Copenhagen
Denmark’s capital has the sights, scenes and snacks to float any family’s boat.
By Wendy Helfenbaum
Growing up, I devoured Hans Christian Andersen stories and I loved reading them to my son when he was younger. So, while I was planning a summer family getaway, Copenhagen caught my eye thanks not only to its fairy-tale charm, but also to its many kid-friendly outdoor activities, offbeat museums and tasty treats.
The best way to discover a harborfront city is from the water. After settling into our Scandi-chic room at Hotel Kong Arthur, my husband, our 19-year-old son and I wander to Ved Stranden, a street along the Slotsholmen Canal in central Copenhagen. Under sunny skies, we hop aboard an open boat for a guided canal tour to see historical and architectural landmarks, including Amalienborg Palace — home of the Danish royal family — and the neo-futurist Copenhagen Opera House. The angular Black Diamond cultural center, part of the Royal Danish Library, blows me away, its imposing glass facade reflecting the shimmering water and sky.

Back on the cobblestone streets, we download StoryHunt, an interactive walking-tour app created by three Danish students, which guides us through 15 cultural and historical points of interest within the compact city center. Fun fact: Copenhagen has more bicycles than cars. We love how simple it is to navigate on foot — while watching out for Danes who come careening along designated bicycle highways.
Steps from our hotel, the Torvehallerne food market offers us a chance to refuel with a wealth of Danish delights, including smørrebrød — open-faced sandwiches piled high with toppings like shrimp, mackerel, roast beef, pickled onions and cheese on dense rye bread — and flaky, cinnamon-infused pastries.
A visit to the Classic Car House tops my boys’ wish list the following day. Don’t underestimate the time it will take an automotive fanatic to view the exhibits which chronicle the history of transportation, celebrate 100 years of Le Mans racing and feature a collection of 300 vintage cars. After four hours, we emerge from the museum’s Car Hotel, where another 200 vehicles

One of the best ways to orient yourself in Copenhagen is on a canal tour; a sentry stands watch at Amalienborg Palace.
OPENING SPREAD
Nyhavn is one of many canal-side neighborhoods where locals and tourists flock to eat, drink and be outdoors.

are stored, and head to Nyhavn, the much-photographed canalside neighborhood lined with colorful townhouses. There, my son finds a row of trampolines built into a section of the sidewalk, where we bounce as locals swim in the canal.
After a much-needed soak in the wood-heated hot tubs (followed by a brave dip in the cold-plunge pools) at CopenHot, an outdoor spa in the post-industrial Refshaleøen district, we cross the island for dinner at Reffen, the largest street-food market in Northern Europe. Among the 35 food stalls serving everything from Nordic hot dogs to Nepalese dumplings and Swiss raclette, we find Yankees & Canucks, run by former Montrealer Daniel Ferreira and his American partner, Shirley Kvistgaard. The couple serves up scrumptious North American favorites — we devour short ribs, grilled corn and poutine topped with squeaky cheese curds imported from Quebec.
Instead of renting boats to paddle around the city’s gorgeous canals, we go with Green Kayak, an environmental non-profit

that provides free kayaks in exchange for gathering any floating trash you find during your journey. Picking up garbage becomes a highlight of our Copenhagen adventure, as we collect a bucketful of plastic cups and wrappers. Green Kayak launched in Copenhagen in 2017 and now operates across Europe and in Tokyo. In 2024, volunteers removed more than 31,500 pounds of waste from Danish waterways.
Enticed by Copenhagen’s wealth of day-trip options, we ride 30 minutes by train to Roskilde to check out the Viking Ship Museum. There, we set sail aboard a Nordic wooden boat built as Vikings would have made it 1,000 years ago: While I row along with a dozen other Viking wannabes, my husband hoists the heavy sails and my son steers us through the Roskilde Fjord.
Back in the city center, we board a harbor bus — part of Copenhagen’s excellent public transit system — and marvel at the colorful skyline as we float along. “I could live here,” my son sighs.
Our Copenhagen trip is a fairy tale come true.

5 Crown-jewel Lakes of Europe

From a Scottish loch surrounded by verdant hills to an Alpine oasis in Germany, these freshwater shores are worth planning a trip around.
By Gwen Bishop

Switzerland
Lake Zurich
This long, curved lake’s western edge dips into the heart of Switzerland’s largest city. To take the plunge into its cool, refreshing waters, visit Seebad Utoquai, a 19th-century bathhouse with swimming, sunbathing decks, lakeside yoga and fondue on offer. If you prefer to stay dry, float above the lake’s aquamarine ripples on a historic steamboat like the Stadt Zürich, with the snow-covered peaks of the Swiss Alps as your backdrop. You can even take a two-hour cruise to RapperswilJona, where the picturesque village of Hurden lies a leisurely stroll away across a half-mile-long wooden footbridge.
WHERE TO STAY
Rest your head at the five-star Park Hyatt Zurich, just steps from the Altstadt (Old Town) and the shores of the lake. By day, indulge in a thermal salt peel at the spa or explore the city via a complimentary bike rental. After dark, slip into the two-storey Parkhuus Wine Cellar for a glass (or two) of champagne.
Ask your advisor about exclusive amenities at this property.

Germany
Lake Tegernsee
Drive an hour south of Munich and you’ll arrive at Tegernsee, a resort town in the Bavarian Alps renowned for its scenic setting. Avid hikers flock to the region, which has more than 400 miles of marked trails. Try hopping aboard the Wallbergbahn cable car at RottachEgern and ride up to the Wallberg plateau, which reaches an elevation of 5,315 feet. From there, you can hike back to the valley or enjoy some of the shorter paths with views of the lake. Prefer a leisurely pace? Visit Alpakahof Tegernsee and take an “alpaca hike” — a slow stroll through the forest with your own alpaca as a guide.

CAN’T MISS
Book an afternoon at Monte Mare’s wellness facilities, located on the shore of Lake Tegernsee. The highlight is the Irmingard, a 56-foot-long ship built in 1925 that’s been converted into a floating sauna. Work up a sweat, jump in the water to cool off, then lounge on the dock and breathe in the fresh mountain air.

Slovenia
Lake Bled
This glacial lake nestled in the Julian Alps near Austria is like something out of a fantasy. Just an hour’s drive from Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital city, its teal waters are surrounded by lush mountains, with the resort town of Bled, and clifftop Bled Castle, situated at the lake’s eastern end. On a small island at its center, you’ll spot the steeple of a 17th-century baroque church pointing skyward. Though the region is idyllic in all seasons (the shoreline coated in a dusting of powdery snow is a sight to behold), summer is the best time for paddling on the lake’s calm waters and cycling around its perimeter. While in Bled, be sure to sample a slice of kremšnita, the region’s famous cream cake.
HOW TO SEE IT
Explore the hidden gems of Slovenia and Croatia on Abercrombie & Kent’s Best of the Balkans journey, which includes a Lake Bled excursion aboard a pletna, a traditional Slovenian boat. A pletnar (oarsman) will row you to Bled Island, where you can tour the Church of Mary the Queen and ring its bell three times to make a wish.
Italy
Lake Garda
While it may not be as well-known on the world stage as Lake Como, Lake Garda is Italy’s largest. And for one of history’s most celebrated writers, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, its beauty is the stuff of dreams. When the German polymath went on a pilgrimage through Italy from 1786 to 1788 and wrote Italian Journey, Lake Garda was one of his highlights. He even sketched the region, including Castello Scaligero di Malcesine, a medieval fortress on the lake’s eastern shore. To see Goethe’s drawings and an expansive view of Lake Garda in all its glory, climb the castello’s steps on a clear day with the sun glittering on the water.

WHERE TO STAY
No matter where you wander at Hotel Val di Sogno, you can glimpse the sailboats bobbing on the water. All rooms and suites at this tranquil adults-only resort face onto the lake, and there’s also a lakeside pool and garden. Enjoy breakfast on the terrace, then take advantage of the Finnish sauna and Turkish steam bath.
Ask your advisor about exclusive amenities at this property.

Scotland
Loch Lomond
Everyone’s heard of the Loch Ness monster, but what about the legendary crocodile-like reptile with large spikes on its back that is said to lurk in Loch Lomond? It’s easy to see why the mythical creature would make this place its home: Scotland’s largest loch is surrounded by rolling hills and mountain peaks, its surface speckled with dozens of islands and islets. For the best views, climb to the top of Conic Hill or book a seaplane tour to soar above the Scottish Highlands. Don’t leave the region without visiting Luss, a historic village of 18th- and 19th-century stone cottages on the lake’s western shore.
HOW TO SEE IT
A stop at Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park is on the itinerary when you take Railbookers’ five-day Edinburgh, Loch Lomond and the Kelpies tour. Riding round-trip from London, you’ll catch the sights from the Caledonian Sleeper, a train known for its flagship rooms fitted with double beds.

CRYSTAL CRUISES
*The Crystal Referral Program is effective as of April 4, 2024, and is designed to reward Crystal Society members for referring “new to Crystal” friends and family members (“Friend(s)”). The Friend and the Crystal Society member cannot be the same person (for example, by using a different email address), nor can they come from within the same household as the Crystal Society Member. Friends booking their own accommodations on a Crystal cruise receive five percent (5%) savings on the cruise-only fare; limited to one (1) five percent (5%) savings per booking. For each “Eligible Referral”, Crystal Society members receive a future cruise credit in an amount equal to the five percent (5%) savings extended to their Friend (the “Referral Credit”). An Eligible Referral is defined as a verified Friend who books and sails on a future Crystal voyage; guests booked within the same suite/guest room do not constitute an Eligible Referral. To qualify as an Eligible Referral, the Friend must submit their referral request and provide the Crystal Society Member information within fourteen (14) days of paying their initial deposit. The Referral Credit is only earned once an Eligible Referral is within forty-five (45) days of departure (the “Departure Date”) and their booking is paid in full. Additional/repeat bookings made by a Friend are not counted as additional Eligible Referrals. Credits can be applied towards current bookings sailing on or after the Departure Date. Should the Friend cancel their booking, the Referral Credit will be rendered null and void unless the Friend’s booking is non-refundable, and Crystal retains the Friend’s funds. The amount of the Referral Credit will always be based on the five percent (5%) savings applied to the Friend’s booking at the time of their initial deposit. A Crystal Society Member can refer as many Friends as they want and receive a Referral Credit for each referral; there is no limit to how many Referral Credits can be applied towards a new booking. Not applicable to reduced rate bookings and charter and incentive groups. Crystal Referral Program combinability will be communicated at time of booking. By taking advantage of the five percent (5%) savings under the Crystal Referral Program, Friends understand and agree that the Crystal Society Member who referred them will implicitly become aware of what they paid for their cruise. While travel agents are not eligible to refer new guests and not entitled to earn future cruise credits through this program they are encouraged to promote the program to their Crystal Society Member customers. Cancel/rebooks not eligible. The Crystal Referral Program applies to new bookings made by Friends on/after April 4, 2024. Certain restrictions apply. Soliciting bookings on social media websites or otherwise making general solicitations to strangers such as to a wide, unknown audience, is prohibited.
