Europe Is Calling

The Old Continent’s mix of cosmopolitan flair, coastal tranquility and rich history has always enticed visitors. But the sheer number of North Americans (and others) who make their way to Europe each year has a major impact on the experience. In this issue of Range Best, we explore how to see Europe differently, whether you’re preparing for your first trip or your fifth. One way to zero in on a local culture (or a natural phenomenon) is through a one-of-a-kind stay (see page 18), or you could seek new perspectives by approaching a place from the water (page 12). And if you haven’t already started planning, turn to page 8 for expert tips: From when to book to how to avoid crowds and how much you should do, we outline everything to consider for your 2025 adventure.

Greece: Europe’s Leading Destination

Sprinkled with archeological ruins, a plethora of natural wonders from volcanoes to lagoons, and roughly 6,000 islands (227 of which are inhabited), Greece is chock-full of reasons to visit. If that’s not enough to convince you, the World Travel Awards named the country Europe’s Leading Destination in 2024. And before heading to the islands, be sure to spend time in Athens: The ancient capital, with its countless museums and endless gyros, was awarded Europe’s Leading City Break Destination in 2024.

Fresh, light takes on classic Milanese dishes — osso buco, risotto alla Milanese — are served in this sleek trattoria in the city’s Brera district. The Great European Vacation

From navigating the crowds to choosing transportation, here are our top tips for planning a trip that’s low on stress and high on reward.

PHOTO: SAMANTHA HENTOSH/UNSPLASH (SPLIT, CROATIA).

Europe has long been a popular tourist destination but, since the pandemic, North Americans are flocking across the Atlantic Ocean in unprecedented numbers. From April to October 2024, about 418,000 flights were scheduled between the United States and Europe — a seven-percent increase over the record set in 2023. It’s no wonder: The continent is home to some of the world’s most iconic attractions, from the Eiffel Tower to the Colosseum.

But for a place that’s less than half the size of North America, the continent can feel overwhelming. There are an incredible number of cities to explore, and peak pricing, overtourism and a wide range of transportation options make planning tricky. To craft a trip that’s organized, exciting and restorative, you’ll need to start well in advance. Here, we answer your burning questions about planning a trip to Europe in 2025.

What time of year should I travel?

There are pros and cons to each travel season. Summer is popular for good reasons: It’s when kids are off school, the weather is at its best, most local businesses are open and many popular festivals take place. The downside is premium prices and large crowds.

To avoid the higher costs of summer travel (and have fewer people lurking in your photos) consider the shoulder months of March, April, September and October. However, you could experience rainy or cool weather, and some hotels or restaurants may be closed.

Another alternative for peak-season travel is to opt for a destination that’s less affected by overtourism. “I’m particularly excited by Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro,” says Southern California–based travel advisor Marybeth Hillier. “These small, beautiful countries on the Adriatic Sea have stunning natural scenery as well as cosmopolitan cities.”

How many destinations should I visit?

Your biggest mistake when planning a European vacation is trying to do too much. “It’s easy to forget to allow for travel time,” says Hillier. One day on either side of the trip will be eaten up by a transatlantic flight. And visiting multiple cities requires travel time, too. “In a week, I suggest no more than two destinations and advise selecting places that are in close proximity to each other.”

Angela Adto Tepper, a New York-based travel advisor, agrees that at least two to three nights per location is wise. If you plan too many one-night stays, “it’s going to feel like you’re packing and unpacking the whole time,” she says. “Even if you’re someone who enjoys doing as many things as possible, the itinerary starts to feel like a blur.”

Which type of transportation is best: plane, train or car?

If cost is a concern, air travel can be surprisingly affordable when booked with a budget carrier. However, the airport may be an hourlong trek outside of the city and schlepping through security can be a hassle. Trains are another economical option and stations are conveniently located in city centers. Minimal security means you don’t have to arrive two hours ahead of time. “Plus, you don’t have to limit your liquids in your bag,” says Hillier. However, you will have to carry your own luggage, a headache that can be avoided with a private car transfer. A hired car allows you to fully customize your journey and schedule stops for lunch, sightseeing or excursions according to your whims.

Should I consider a cruise or coach tour?

“Cruisers tend to be well-traveled people who are tired of the moving, the shuffling, the transitions,” says Adto Tepper. Trips on river cruises and ocean liners are also perfect for first-timers: There’s no unpacking and repacking multiple times throughout the trip or rushing to make the next flight or train. Most everything is taken care of, from meals to days in port. You give up some control, but you also cut down on stress. And river cruises are quite scenic, as they travel close to land.

Motor-coach tours are another way to see Europe that require minimal effort, as the hotels and itineraries are pre-planned. Largegroup tours are typically more affordable, while high-end trips are often limited to 18 passengers for a more personal experience. Look out for family tours that cater to all ages with experiences like kid-friendly cooking classes and hands-on craft demonstrations.

When is the best time to book flights and accommodations?

As travel to Europe has skyrocketed, so have prices. If you want to get the best deal and nab your choice of international flights and hotel reservations, Hillier and Adto Tepper both recommend contacting your advisor nine months to a year in advance. “As soon as hotels and flights release their calendars for my dates, I book. The rates will just continue to climb,” says Adto Tepper — and popular accommodations in places like France, Italy and Greece can sell out. 

Scotland, Slowly

Why the best way to see this rugged, majestic country and its surrounding isles is from the water.

Athick fog greets us on the tiny island of Foula, along with a young man named Paul who is one of only about 35 people who live here. He’s our guide for the day, and he explains that when the Romans first arrived in the Shetland Islands, they thought the world ended at distant Foula. Life on one of the most remote inhabited islands in the United Kingdom still follows the calendar implanted by Julius Caesar, celebrating Christmas and New Year’s 12 days after the rest of Scotland.

In this strikingly self-sufficient community, most people have two or three jobs, doing everything from handling water and fire emergencies to operating the ferries. Paul says that there are efforts to maintain and even increase the population, but he admits that the lack of people is what gives the island its “mysticism.” We pass a small herd of Shetland ponies on our way to the cliffs, and the fog clears just long enough for us to make out stunning sea stacks in the distance.

THIS SPREAD, LEFT TO RIGHT
The Ring of Brodgar, in the Orkney Islands, is a 5,000-yearold ceremonial site; Neist Point Lighthouse is a beacon on the cliffs of the Isle of Skye.

Scotland has nearly 800 islands (93 of which are inhabited), with most only accessible by boat and many without any accommodations. So, while most visitors are drawn to the verdant Scottish Highlands and the vibrant cultural capitals of Glasgow and Edinburgh, Adventure Canada’s circumnavigation of Scotland floats an off-the-beaten-path experience at a laidback pace.

Over 11 days, our small ship, Ocean Endeavour, and its sturdy fleet of Zodiac boats ferry us to, through and along the cliffs, caves and beaches that make up the rugged Scottish coastline. We set sail from Glasgow and navigate north to the Shetland Islands, then back south to end the journey in Aberdeen, on the east coast of Scotland. Each day, we stop at a new destination where we can venture out in groups or on our own.

We hike the hills along the Isle of Skye, and step back 5,000 years in the Orkney Islands to walk through some of the best-preserved Neolithic ruins in Europe. On Lewis and Harris, we visit thatched stone-wall blackhouses to learn how Harris tweed is weaved, and then explore the Calanais Standing Stones, which are older than Stonehenge.

Each day’s itinerary offers a variety of active pursuits, such as hiking, biking and kayaking, with options for all fitness levels. While I scramble up steep cliffs, others join leisurely five-mile hikes

with authors, explorers and historians, three-mile birding walks with a Scottish ornithologist or relaxed “beachcomber strolls” with a naturalist. Back on board, these experts also lead fascinating lectures nearly every day about local flora, fauna, history and even Scottish slang. In one of my favorites, a Scottish storyteller regales us with traditional tales, rhymes and folklore while we sip Scottish whisky from the bar.

When not on excursions, I curl up in the lounge or out on the sun deck reading a book on the history of Scottish clans, borrowed from the on-board library, or I join hands-on workshops on knot tying or weaving. Ocean Endeavour accommodates fewer than 200 passengers, so it’s easy for a solo traveler like me to make

friends — I quickly find regular dinner companions, who I also join for nightly films, concerts and other performances.

On the last full day of the trip, we set foot on Fair Isle, another far-flung Shetland island. I choose a bird-watching tour with our ornithologist, hopping in a Zodiac for close-ups of the craggy coastline en route to shore. It quickly becomes evident that the best has been saved for last.

We hike up a small hill, sit down and get comfortable. For several days we have spotted puffins perched on high cliffs, but we have yet to see any up close. Our guide informs us that puffins make their nests in the cliffs just below us and, after only a few minutes, one puffin joins us. Then another, and another. Soon, dozens of puffins appear along the cliff’s edge, digging, playing, fighting and flirting. Several fly up from the ocean, their beaks bursting with fresh fish to feed the pufflings in the burrows below.

I sit cross-legged in the green grass, surrounded by tiny purple and yellow flowers, in no hurry to be anywhere else. The most adorable bird I have ever seen flaps its wings and dances just a few feet away, and I’m exactly where I want to be: in Scotland, exploring it slowly. 

Set sail from Tromsø to Lofoten and back on an eight-day journey under the northern lights. You’ll see the fjords, islands and fishing villages of Arctic Norway, with skiing, kayaking and nature walks at each stop. The winter timing is ideal for delving into Scandinavian comfort, from warming beach bonfires to Nordic saunas.

Iceland, Svalbard and Greenland with Seabourn

Visit several iconic North Atlantic islands on a 13-day jaunt covering Iceland, Greenland and the gateway to the North Pole. The tour visits Iceland’s two largest cities before taking in the icy east coast of Greenland. The expedition then spends three days in Svalbard, one of the world’s northernmost islands, where polar bears run wild.

The pool adds a touch of modernity to Tetrulla, a sprawling villa of trulli, which are unique to Italy’s Puglia region.

Puglia, Italy

Tetrulla

The trulli of Puglia are like something out of a fairy tale — the conical limestone dwellings that have stood since the 14th century look like they might be home to families of elves or hobbits. Built without mortar or cement, these structures were crafted from local stone, designed to be cool in the summer and cozy in the winter. Once the homes of rural families, today the best-preserved trulli can be found in the town of Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where there are more than 1,500. Visitors can overnight in a trullo by securing rentals such as Tetrulla in Valle d’Itria, a.k.a. the “Valley of the Trulli.” This expansive villa (it sleeps 10) offers the historic charm of the trulli with modern upgrades like a private pool and outdoor spaces for enjoying alfresco meals with views over rolling hills and olive groves.

Ask your advisor about Ensemble’s villa program, offering more than 2,000 luxury rentals worldwide.

Plenty of outdoor spaces make Tetrulla the perfect setting for an easygoing Italian getaway.

Golden Circle, Iceland

Torfhús Retreat

If you’ve ever dreamed of living out your own Viking saga, Torfhús Retreat, on the southern tip of Iceland’s epic Golden Circle, lets you channel that spirit (minus the hardship). Set on volcanic plains with views of snow-capped peaks, the property’s collection of turf-roofed cottages, each named after a Norse god, echoes Iceland’s earliest Viking settlements. Inside, you’ll find reclaimed-wood interiors and handcrafted furniture; outside, your own geothermally heated basalt-stone hot pool sunk into the ground, ideal for soaking in after a day of chasing waterfalls or hiking glaciers. To fuel your adventures, chef Thorarinn Eggertsson crafts inventive dishes sourced from the surrounding land and waters — produce is grown on site, salmon and char are caught in local rivers — served in the retreat’s Viking Langhús (longhouse).

Torfhús Retreat welcomes guests in all seasons; the menu changes nightly and most ingredients are sourced from within 10 miles of the property.

Zannier Hotels Le Chalet

Europe’s traditional wooden Alpine chalets were historically used only in the summertime, by herders who tended grazing dairy cattle. Now, these structures are synonymous with the slopes, and with luxury. That’s true of Zannier Hotels Le Chalet: Perched above the charming village of Megève — put on the map in the 1920s by Baroness Noémie de Rothschild as one of Europe’s elite ski destinations — the lavish chalet blends classic Alpine design with a minimalist look and feel. Each of its 12 rooms and suites is designed for maximum coziness, featuring exposed beams, kingsize beds, rustic fireplaces, oversized tubs and terraces giving jaw-dropping views of the snow-covered Mont Blanc massif. Après-ski or -snowshoe, indulge in a deep-tissue massage at the spa followed by a comfort-food dinner at La Ferme de Mon Père restaurant — Beaufort fondue, anyone?

Lough Eske Castle Hotel

The Emerald Isle calls to mind lush landscapes stamped with historic castles — so, why not stay in one? Once the stomping ground of the O’Donnell clan, the founders of County Donegal, this 15th-century fortress has been reimagined as a five-star hideaway, blending Irish heritage with contemporary comforts. Located just outside Donegal Town on the Wild Atlantic Way, its 124 rooms and 25 suites are outfitted with rich textiles, marble bathrooms and views fit for royalty. After wandering the 43-acre woodland setting, sip a whiskey by the fire in the Gallery Bar or feast at Cedars Restaurant — try the pan-seared scallops served with asparagus, Donegal coast samphire, clam velouté and wild-garlic oil.

The northern lights are visible approximately 200 nights a year in Lapland.

Lapland, Finland

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort

If you’re venturing into the Arctic Circle, there’s a good chance you have aurora on the brain. And there’s no better place to see the northern lights than from the comfort of your bed. At Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, nestled in Finnish Lapland, you can watch the sky explode into a kaleidoscope of neon greens, blues and purples from inside your very own glass igloo, which includes two or four twin beds, an ensuite bathroom and sauna access. For an upgrade, try a Kelo-glass igloo: a rustic log cabin made from local pinewood complete with a glass dome over the bedroom, a private sauna and a fireplace. Northern-lights season lasts from the end of August until the beginning of April, so there’s lots of time to catch the spectacular phenomenon. 
