The Year of the Cruise

New ships. New destinations. New stateroom innovations. No wonder there’s a lot of buzz on the water lately!

And, now more than ever, cruising embodies the “something for everyone” way to travel, whether you want to go it alone (see why solo cruising is trending on page 4) or book the entire family in a suite designed for the kid in everyone (check out the latest innovations in stateroom design on page 10).

According to Cruise Market Watch, you have 323 cruise ships (and counting!) to choose from, while CruiseMapper has compiled a database of 2,219 cruise ports. That’s a lot of decisions to make, which could explain why the Cruise Lines International Association reports that three quarters of all cruisers use an advisor to book their holidays at sea.

What’s Your Cruising Style?

When it comes to picking the perfect cruise for your next adventure at sea, personality is everything. Here’s how to identify the traits that make you special—and the cruise that’s most compatible.

The social butterfly

You are… comfortable being the center of attention and will gladly chit-chat with strangers you meet on the street. Friends would describe you as outgoing and the first to suggest a group night out.

The cruise for you… is on a big ship with plenty of opportunities for mingling. Carnival’s nightlife offerings are legendary, with its mega deck parties and DJs spinning tunes into the wee hours. Norwegian Cruise Line will also appeal to your flair for the dramatic with Broadway productions, including Beetlejuice coming to the new Norwegian Viva

New for you… The debut of more than 15 bar and nightlife experiences on Royal Caribbean’s new Icon of the Seas, including a walk-up champagne window and the cruise line’s first dueling pianos bar.

The lifelong learner

You have… an insatiable curiosity that inspires your love of new cultures and destinations. You’re happiest when you’re tasting local dishes, soaking up history and learning new skills.

The cruise for you… is one that gives you an opportunity to learn from an expert on board, like Cunard’s Insights enrichment program, which features lectures from authors, archaeologists and scientists, as well as hands-on art classes and star gazing from the planetarium on the Queen Mary. Indulge your appetite for global cuisine with Oceania’s Culinary Discovery Tours, highlighting local markets, cooking demos and tutored wine tastings.

New for you… Holland America has announced new culinary cruises for 2023. Passengers can discover local cuisine and its ties to the culture of a destination from celebrated chefs. On Viking ships, resident musicians perform live classical music to enrich your journey.

Evenings on the new Icon of the Seas might include cocktails at The Overlook lounge.
All Aboard 4 | RANGE BEST | MAY 2023
Add a touch of culinary know-how to your cruise itinerary.

The adventure seeker

You are… someone who routinely seeks new thrills and challenges. With you, it’s always game on! You thrive on pushing your limits and you’re the first to try something different.

The cruise for you… Think expedition ship—one that will sail to more remote destinations, like Antarctica, the Galapagos or the islands of the South Pacific. Be part of an expedition, such as Lindblad’s National Geographic voyages where you can hone photography skills alongside pros, like Sisse Brimberg. Or opt for a more mainstream route on a vessel loaded with amenities, such as a skydiving simulator (Royal Caribbean’s Quantum and Anthem ships), or a roller coaster (Carnival’s new Mardi Gras).

New for you… A trip around the world is the ultimate adventure. Princess Cruises is offering its longest voyage ever in 2025, with an epic 116-day World Cruise onboard Island Princess traversing over 33,500 nautical miles, and visiting 51 destinations in 26 countries.

The independent traveler

You are… content to socialize, but in smaller groups. You’re happiest exploring fresh places on your own and finding quiet corners where you can read, people watch and soak up the scenery.

The cruise for you… Smaller luxury ships, such as Seabourn, Windstar and Regent, offer uncrowded atmospheres where you will find quiet cafés and lounges, ideal for reading and journaling. Or book a river cruise with Avalon or AmaWaterways so you can watch the scenery go by in the privacy of your stateroom through floorto-ceiling windows.

New for you… On Regent’s Seven Seas Splendor (coming in November), take a wander through art-adorned spaces and wonder at the beauty of a real Fabergé Egg, the first to permanently reside at sea. Or relax in the calm ambiance of the Signature Sun Deck, a private area onboard Sun Princess.

Close encounters with wildlife await on an expedition cruise.
If a little R&R is what you’re after, Regent’s Seven Seas Splendor is a good place to be.

Going Solo

How cruise lines are making it more enjoyable—and less expensive—to hit the high seas on your own.

WHEN I FIRST STARTED TRAVELING ALONE, my father asked, “You don’t really enjoy it, do you?” I insisted I did, but he didn’t believe me— until he met a couple I’d befriended on a cruise from Egypt to Dubai. He saw pictures of us on a dhow in Oman and (finally!) understood one of the greatest things about being on a solo cruise: while you may be traveling solo, you’re never traveling alone.

I’m far from the only traveler to discover the growing appeal of going solo. A recent study by MMGY Travel Intelligence found one in four Americans planned to take a trip alone in 2022, while Google searches for “solo travel” tripled between 2015 and 2023.

For many solo travelers, hopping aboard a cruise ship is one of the easiest and most accessible ways to see the world. According to Statista, a 2021 survey found that most solo travelers from the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia had already taken at least one escorted tour or cruise. Cruise lines are

responding to the demand by eliminating single supplements and offering more single cabins.

It’s important to note that cruising single is not the same thing as taking a singles’ cruise. Singles’ cruises are usually for people looking for romantic relationships, while solo travelers simply enjoy the freedom of traveling alone.

Make lasting friendships

The best way to meet people onboard is through activities both on land and at sea, so it helps to select cruises that cater to your interests. For instance, expedition cruises offer solo travelers an opportunity to bond with other adventure seekers, like my friend Beth Pagano, a B&B owner in Red Hook, Hudson Valley. Beth loves everything about bears and, when the pandemic waned, she booked a single cabin on a cruise to the Arctic to see polar bears. “I like that the ship has 12 solo cabins because I know there will be at least eleven other single travelers,” she says. Another great option for solo travelers are themed river cruises, which are geared to people

All Aboard 6 | RANGE BEST | MAY 2023

interested in everything from history and classical music to wine and golf.

Most ships also host welcome receptions and other events for solo travelers. Holland America Line has a Single Partners Program with wine tastings and trivia contests, and passengers who book a Norwegian Cruise Line single cabin can access an exclusive lounge that hosts daily pre-dinner gatherings for people traveling alone.

Start small

The Points Guy’s cruise expert Gene Sloan recommends that solo travelers opt for smaller ships where it’s easier to make friends (you’re more likely to run into the same people repeatedly unlike on mega cruises where you can go days without seeing the same person twice). You might also want to consider starting with a short “test” trip. Princess has weekend cruises to the Bahamas, and Holland America Line offers a round-trip from Vancouver with an overnight in Seattle.

Book a solo cabin

The dreaded single supplement—an extra fee charged when a solo traveler occupies a doubleoccupancy stateroom—is becoming less of an issue as cruise lines are adding more solo cabins and increasingly waiving the charge on select departures. Gone are the days when solo cabins tended to be smaller or located in less popular areas of the ship. Celebrity offers the Edge Single Stateroom with Infinite Veranda, which takes your room right to the water’s edge, giving you open-air access to the sea with the touch of a button. Atlas Ocean Voyages’ luxurious new solo cabins are 183 square feet— almost twice the size of those on most other ships.

I find traveling alone exhilarating and love that when I’m cruising by myself, I can be as social or solitary as I want—and, either way, I’ve always met people I enjoyed spending time with. Beth, whose work involves constant contact with others, says being alone might be the thing she looks forward to most. “That—and the polar bears.”

Super Chill

Why cold weather cruises are becoming the hottest destinations.

Antarctica

IT’S COOL TO BE COLD.

According to Bloomberg News, demand for coldweather cruises is outpacing interest in tropical alternatives as travelers—especially millennials—are increasingly seeking out remote, adventurous destinations with otherworldly landscapes and wildlife (Arctic foxes, polar bears) that you just can’t see anywhere else. In 2020, the New York Times reported that bookings to Antarctica were up 40% over the prior seasons and Silversea Cruises has seen a 100% increase in bookings to colder destinations in the past five years. Here are five cool cold-weather destinations that will warm your heart.

With an average temperature of 0°F, Antarctica is Earth’s coldest continent and what it lacks in warmth, it more than makes up for in unspoiled beauty. Most travelers visit by sea and cruises often sell out two years in advance. The challenge of crossing the Drake Passage, which can be completely calm or a wild ride featuring 39-foot waves, is an adventure in itself. Antarctica’s best season is austral summer from December to February when you’ll see migrating whales, newborn seal pups and penguin chicks.

The Arctic

Join onboard naturalists in their quest to study polar bears in Svalbard, an archipelago home to more bears than people. Spitsbergen is considered the “Wildlife Capital of the Arctic,” so you’re also likely to encounter walruses, beluga whales and reindeer. Tour fjords and long sandy beaches by Zodiac and kayak. Although Svalbard has more than 2,100 glaciers, it’s considered a desert because of its low humidity and, thanks to the Gulf Stream, the average summer temperature is a balmy 40°F, making that the best season to visit.

An Antarctica cruise aboard Hurtigruten is peak adventure.

The Svalbard archipelago is home to around 3,000 polar bears.

Alaska

Defined by its rugged natural beauty, abundant wildlife and rich Indigenous culture, a visit to Alaska is endlessly rewarding. Sail past towering fjords, calving glaciers and snow-capped mountains, and fill the Cloud with photos of diverse marine wildlife, from breaching whales and hand-holding sea otters to bears. Alaska is also a birdwatcher’s paradise—home to almost 500 species—where you’re likely to spot raptors like red-tailed hawks and rufous hummingbirds. The summer months are a good time to go thanks to 24 hours of daylight and peak whale watching.

Iceland

Iceland packs a lot of potential for memorable travel experiences into a country the size of Kentucky. Its natural wonders encompass more than 250 glaciers, 109 fjords and 130 volcanos, including Fagradalsfjall, which erupted in 2021 after being dormant for 800 years. The sea offers the perfect vantage point from which to appreciate villages lined with brightly colored homes against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains—enjoy the view while savoring the afternoon tradition of “kaffitímar,” a cake and coffee break. Summer, when waterfalls are overflowing and the hills abound with wildflowers, is a great time to go.

Europe in winter

Europe’s vibrant Christmas markets carry on traditions that go back centuries, including streets lined with brightly lit wooden stalls stocked with handcrafted ornaments, nutcrackers, gingerbread, candied almonds, mulled wine and cocoa. You might also consider opting for a New Year’s cruise on the Danube where you can attend a Viennese ball in an imperial palace or watch spellbinding fireworks with locals in Bratislava.

Alaska’s snow-capped mountains make for a breathtaking whale-watching backdrop. Feel the holiday spirit at a European Christmas market.

Some Like It Hot

For those craving a mood-boosting, sun-induced hit of serotonin, here are three of the hottest warm-weather cruise destinations out there.

Madeira, Portugal

Long a staid vacation spot for British retirees, the island of Madeira is getting a refresh. The formerly rundown Old Town in the capital of Funchal has transformed into a hopping quarter packed with bars, restaurants, shops and galleries while still retaining the charm of its narrow cobblestoned streets and medieval houses.

Mahón is also home to the Xoriguer Distillery, which produces a juniper-forward gin that makes an excellent negroni when mixed with Amontillado sherry. At Michelin-recommended Sa Pedrera d’es Pujol, the chef serves contemporary interpretations of rustic seafood as well as an immensely popular beef Wellington. Check out the island’s fashionable footwear, which includes Pretty Ballerinas, a celebrity-endorsed brand of flats handmade since 1918, and Avarcas, a reimagined version of traditional sandals that have become a favorite of the Spanish royal family.

Bari, Italy

The Design Centre Nini Andrade Silva

showcases contemporary artwork inspired by the island’s culture, while Museu CR7 is a celebration of homegrown football legend Cristiano Rinaldo. Score a table at Kampo where the chef puts creative twists on traditional Portuguese dishes, including gazpacho with red fruits and cured fish and white chocolate mousse with black olives and passionfruit.

Menorca, Spain

Lesser known than neighboring Mallorca and Ibiza, this Balearic island is a hidden gem with 112 miles of sandy beaches, an Anglo-Spanish capital, Mahón, lined with Georgian mansions (courtesy of almost a century of British rule) and a food scene so distinctive that Menorca was named a 2022 European Region of Gastronomy by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism.

Puglia is the heel of Italy’s boot and its capital, Bari, is a lively university town with a historic old center home to two recently restored main squares: Piazzas Mercantile and del Ferrarese. Highlights include the Basilica of St. Nicholas, which houses the relics of Santa Claus, and Strada Arco Basso, the famous “Strada delle orecchiette” street where a dozen grandmothers make the city’s iconic orecchiette pasta.

Young chefs like Antonio Scalera are putting a fresh spin on traditional Pugliese recipes, with dishes that include ravioli with shrimp tartare and crunchy focaccia (Stanley Tucci raved about Bari’s local specialty, spaghetti all’assassina, which is prepared directly in the pan).

They Can’t Quite Beam You Aboard, But...

Today’s staterooms are sleeker—and smarter—than ever before. Here are a few surprising features your next cruise stateroom could have in store.

VIRTUAL ASSISTANTS? CHECK. Slides from your kids’ bedroom to your living space? You bet. Lighting that adjusts automatically to the time of day? It’s on the way! Today’s cabins might include a gamut of smart technology or feature enormous, opulent spaces or specific themes, like spa staterooms designed to give you that post-massage feeling throughout your stay. Here’s a look at what’s new and trending in cabins today—and what’s in store for the cabins of the future.

Smart staterooms that do all the thinking for you

Smart technology is at the forefront of cabin evolution and many magical features are already available. Princess Cruises’ Medallion wearable technology can detect when you’re approaching your cabin door and unlock it before you get there. Onboard one of Celebrity’s Edge-series ships, the cruise line’s smartphone app lets you control the temperature, curtains, lights and TV while virtual windows, like those on Norwegian, offer a faux ocean view that changes throughout the day. Want to see a show or book a shore excursion? Simply use the cruise line app to plan your day.

Over the next decade, according to MSC Group’s 2020 report “The Future of the Guest Experience,” cabins may soon be able to detect your pulse and body temperature and turn on the AC to cool you off when you return from a strenuous workout. Your lights will also adjust themselves depending on the time of day, and your cabin sensors might even be able to detect how you’re feeling based on facial recognition on your smartphone and switch up the artwork on the walls to better suit your mood.

Balconies that go above and beyond

Infinite verandas featuring floor-to-ceiling windows are already creating a seamless flow between indoors and out on several Celebrity ships. At the touch of a button, the top section of the glass wall drops down like a window to allow fresh air in, while the bottom half is stationary and serves as a half wall.

Sun Princess, scheduled to launch in February 2024, is offering a new stateroom category that features private cabanas beside its balconies for an extra-large outdoor lounge space. Meanwhile, Silversea is launching its Silver Nova and Silver Ray ships with new Otium suites where guests can admire the 270-degree views from the whirlpools on their balconies.

Better family bonding

Carnival Family Harbor staterooms—kitted out in nautical décor—can accommodate up to five family members and include a separate bedroom and living room area (with TVs in each) as well as walk-in closets, full bathroom and separate washroom so there are plenty of spaces to spread out. For the kids at heart, all staterooms aboard Disney Wish feature artwork and subtle decorative nods to Disney’s iconic animated films.

Royal Caribbean family cabins offer endless ways to bond over thrilling new experiences—all in one room. The Ultimate Family Suite (exclusively onboard Symphony of the Seas, Spectrum of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas) is on two levels with an in-suite slide. It includes an air hockey table and table tennis on your balcony along with your very own jacuzzi.

The latest in luxury

In May 2024, Cunard will introduce guests to its luxurious Queens Grill suites, complete with a choose-your-own pillow concierge, fresh flowers and access to your own personal table at the exclusive Queens Grill restaurant. Explora Journeys worked with luxury brand Molteni&C to furnish the suites of the new EXPLORA I with iconic sofas and chairs and incorporated the brand’s new outdoor collection on selected terraces. Meanwhile, Regent has the most expensive bed at sea worth about $200,000 in its 4,400-square-foot space.

Building a sustainable future

Cruise lines are constantly seeking ways to operate in the most environment-friendly way, from using cleaner LNG fuel to adopting more efficient recycling strategies. Stateroom sensors monitor the use of heating, lighting and cooling to save power when possible, such as turning off devices when a cabin is detected as empty. Special coatings on windows also keep staterooms cool, the AC turns off when a balcony door is opened and water is recycled for heating.
