Water of Lake Batur, Kintamani, having overflowed since the past four months does not yet subside. Height of the overflowing water reaches 50 meters and is soaking the plantation area of residents around the lake. Besides, the overflow of lake water also carries garbage so that it looks shabby. Jro Nik, one of the residents having a land around the Lake Batur, said the flooding lake water ashore reached 50 meters. “The overflowing lake water has not subsided. Even, due to the heavy rains yesterday, the overflowing water is increasingly widespread,” he said, Wednesday (Jul 3). Previously, for watering the plantation, farmers needed two rolls of water hose, but then they only needed a roll. Another farmer claimed that

since the heavy rains falling recently, the water of Lake Batur had been rising up to 10 cm in a day. Such condition made people having the land around the lakeside worry because the lake water inundated their land entirely. Currently, most plantation areas of farmers around the Lake Batur were ﬂooded so that they could not be cultivated. Such conditions, according to residents, rarely happened. Even, the cycle was almost every 15 years. “Such overflowing lake water

Criminal Detective personnel of South Denpasar Police led by its Unit Chief I Gusti Ngurah Yudhisthira managed to reveal the windshield shattering case that had been troubling the people of Denpasar and surrounding areas. After several days of investigation, police arrested one of the alleged perpetrators of the windshield shattering named Nurpakih aka Ambon. Arrest of the perpetrator took place at his boarding house on Jalan Raya Sesetan, Gang Pakuk Sari, South Denpasar, Tuesday (Jul 2) at 8:00 p.m. The perpetrator had been undergoing examination in the room of investigators to develop the case. “Indeed, there is an arrest. When it has been complete, we will release the case,” said Unit Chief Yudhisthira, Wednesday (Jul 3). He admitted that he could not provide more information yet related to the disclosure of the case because it was still being developed. Moreover, the windshield shattering case frequently occurred recently. “Please wait ﬁrst. We are still examining the perpetrator. Hopefully, it can be developed,” he said. Information at police station mentioned the reveal of the case was to follow up the report of a resident claiming if the vehicle’s windshield had been shattered. Most recently, a Hindu high priest

Now, the number of cariole remaining to operate around Denpasar is few and far between. According to a cariole driver met around the Badung Market, Nengah Purna, the number of surviving cariole was only about 10-15 units. Such number spread out in several places in the Badung Market. Like in the east of the temple, the place was only used by three cariole drivers to hang out. Purna has deeply involved in such profession since 1963. “I have been here since I was a teenager. When the Mount Agung erupted, I have been a cariole driver,” said the 70-year old grandfather.

He said that before the ﬂooding means of transportation like motorcycles, the cariole was highly required to convey and escort passengers bringing along their groceries from the market. Organda Bali has not discussed about taxi fare hike Denpasar (Bali Post)—

The Land Transportation Organization (Organda) Bali has not stipulated the taxi fare increase after the announcement of the subsidized fuel price hike. This organization has just set the tariff increase of the provincial urban transportation (AKDP) as much as 20 percent. “Taxi fare will be discussed next week. However, the taxi fare increase will remain in the range of the tariff adjustment of the other land transport mode,” said Chairman of the Organda Bali, Ketut Edy Dharma Putra, in Denpasar, Wednesday (Jul 3). According to him, the increase in the taxi fare was also adjusted to the purchasing power and the public interest aside from avoiding the flush among the public transport entrepreneurs. “After July 5, we will meet with taxi operators to discuss about the fare adjustment,” he said. The lack of certainty related to the taxi fare increase was also recognized by General Manager (GM) of Blue Bird Group Bali, I Putu Gede Panca Wiadnyana. So far, the taxi fare had not been adjusted since there was no decision from the government and the Organda. “We still impose the old fares because there is no fare adjustment yet. We remain to comply with the decision of government and Organda in the matter of the fare determination. It entirely poses the authority of the government and Organda,” he said. He said the subsidized fuel price hike like Premium gasoline by 45 percent from IDR 4,500 to IDR 6,500 definitely increased the operating cost. With the rising cost of fuel at such amount, his party admitted to have to make efficiency. “Based on our calculation, the monthly increase reached approximately IDR 400-500 million. The increase reaches nearly half a billion in a month. To that end, we must make efficiency in order our overhead cost does not increase,” he said. As had been known, the Land Transportation Organization had just stipulated the tariff hike of AKDP by 20 percent and the urban public transport tariff by 17 percent. Previously, the Organda Denpasar proposed the tariff adjustment up to 33 percent to offset the subsidized fuel price hike. The 17-percent increase was considered to have met the sense of fairness, either for the owners and passengers of the public transportation. Nevertheless, the increase in the public transport tariff did not apply to students. They could still enjoy the tariff at IDR 2,000 per person. Right now, the number of public transport only remained in the range of 500 to 700 units. Such number had decreased sharply compared to the year 2010 reaching 1,300 units. (kmb27)

He said the development of tourism in Bali needed to be balanced between the Southern and Northern, Western and Eastern Bali. On that account, there should be political

Meanwhile, in terms of the growth of non-star hotel room in 2009, Badung had 41 percent, Denpasar (18 percent) and Gianyar (17 percent), but in 2011, a tremendous surge occurred in Badung County to 54 percent, while Denpasar dropped to 12 percent. The number of star hotel and non-star hotel in 2000 was nearly balanced, but it suddenly showed a surge where the non-star hotel reached much higher number than the star hotels. “It happened because the moratorium was only applied to the star hotel. To that end, I recommend the rules should not include the hotel category, but it’s enough to mention the moratorium of hotel accommodation, whether they fall into star hotel, boutique hotel or villa category,” he said. According to the Head of Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, minimal requirement of a rabies-free area in the span of two years was the absence of rabies death case to human. If such condition also happened to the rabies carrier animal (HPR) such as dog, the administration of anti-rabies vaccine (VAR) or anti-rabies serum (SAR) was no longer required. To achieve such condition, according to Suarjaya, the vaccination measure to rabies carrier animals should be done continuously. Health counseling related to precautions against rabies in the com-

munity should not be interrupted. Community had to remain vigilant because though there was no longer death case of rabies in human for 15 months, it did not necessarily mean if the rabies did not threaten again. To that end, expected Suarjaya, people should avoid dog bites and vaccinated their dog and did not let their dog roam around the streets. Meanwhile, to deal with rabies infection case in human bitten by dogs, the Bali Health Agency provided the anti-rabies vaccine and anti-rabies serum. Based on the recent data, the anti-

rabies vaccine stock consisted of 29,191 vials and anti-rabies serum stock totally came to 326 vials. A legislator of the Badung House from Jimbaran, I Made Dharma, said on Wednesday (Jul 3) that his party received many complaints from the public related to the existence of the project. According to him, residents protested why the river was even backfilled. “Is it really allowed to backfill a river?” he said. Based on information he gathered, the river backfill project had kindled public debate at Jimbaran because the project was not widely socialized to the people of Jimbaran. It gave impression if the backfill was covered up because it was only carried out by local residents. Allegedly, the project had business purpose as an access to the development of tourist accommodation around the river. He further explained that about three months ago the project triggered a tension among the community components. Few times of meetings had been held to find out a solution, but failed. Ultimately, the backfill project was dormant and the former backfill was neglected at all. “I urge the government to im-

mediately intervene and follow-up the issue. County government should immediately take action. Otherwise, it will become a time bomb in the community,” he said. When confirmed separately, the headman of Jimbaran, Ketut Rimbawan, acknowledged the issue related to the backfill. However, he did not want to specify what kind of issue occurred in the community. “I’ll check it first. For clarity, I will ask the subdistrict head,” he said. Meanwhile, the Subdistrict Head of South Kuta, I Wayan Puja, admitted the backfill project had been polemical in the society. He himself admitted to have mediated the issue for several times. Of the several meetings, it was decided to discontinue the project because it did not have any permit. He said further the backfill project was aimed at making a road access to the beach. WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama sought to allay concerns from German Chancellor Angela Merkel about reported U.S. spying on European allies on Wednesday, and they agreed to hold a high-level meeting on the subject in coming days. The European Union has demanded the United States explain a report in a German magazine that Washington was spying on its European allies, calling such surveillance shocking if true. The reports came to light amid the imbroglio over former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden, who leaked details of surveillance activities by Washington. He is currently in limbo in a transit area of Moscow’s airport as the United States pressures Moscow to expel him home. A White House statement said Obama and Merkel spoke by phone, a conversation that took place two weeks after they held face-to-face talks in Berlin. “The president assured the chancellor that the United States takes seriously the concerns of our European allies and partners,” the White House said, noting U.S. and EU ofﬁcials would discuss intelligence and privacy issues as early as July 8. South Africa looks to sell some of $1 bln rhino horn stockpile Reuters

PRETORIA - South Africa is seeking permission for a one-off sale of some of its $1 billion stockpile of rhino horn to finance conservation and potentially flood a thriving black market, its environment minister said on Wednesday. However, conservation groups fear the plan could end up increasing demand in major markets such as Vietnam, where the horn is sought after for use in traditional medicine, as well as enriching black marketeers. Environment Minister Edna Molewa told reporters that South Africa, home to 73 percent of the world’s rhinos, would seek permission for the sale at the next major meeting of CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, in 2016. “South Africa cannot continue to be held hostage by syndicates who are slaughtering our rhinos,” she said. South Africa is home to more than 20,000 rhinos but is set this year to lose nearly 800 of them to poachers. Poaching is increasing at such a rate that by the time of the meeting, the number of rhinos being killed or dying each year will exceed the number being born. South Africa plans to enlist other countries in the region in the sales scheme but did not mention who it expects to act as the buyer. The biggest market for illegal rhino horn in recent years has been Vietnam, where the product is sold in pharmacies and over the Internet at about $65,000 a kg, making it more expensive than gold. At this price, South Africa’s stockpile of 16,400 kg would be worth just over $1 billion. “We don’t believe that Vietnam satisfies any of the conditions that would be necessary to participate in legal trade of rhino horn,” said Tom Milliken, head of the rhino and elephant project for the wildlife trade monitoring network Traffic. Rhino horn has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine, where it was ground into powder to treat a range of maladies including rheumatism, gout and even possession by devils.

Murray ﬁghts back from the brink to sink Verdasco Reuters LONDON - Andy Murray put the home fans through the wringer as he battled back from two sets down to book a place in the Wimbledon semi-ﬁnals with an edgy victory over unseeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco on Wednesday.

The number two seed showed he is physically among the toughest players on the tour as he dug deep to drag himself back into the match, but there was also a nervous vulnerability about the way he went about securing a 4-6 3-6 6-1 6-4 7-5 win. This was meant to be a walk in the park for Murray, who had an 8-1 winning record against the 54thranked Spanish claycourt specialist with limited grasscourt pedigree. It swiftly turned into an uphill struggle as Verdasco had the U.S. Open champion on the rack, firing down bullet serves and letting rip with rasping forehand winners. Still, the sprinter with thighs like thick hams could outdo both of those legends - by winning more stages than them at cycling’s premier race. By Cavendish’s warp-speed standards, his 24th stage win on Wednesday was like taking candy from a baby. The teammates who led Cavendish to the finish, sucking him along in their wheels, building up his speed, were toiling like clockwork. Stamping on his pedals, head down, thighs pumping like pistons, Cavendish then whooshed off alone for the last 150 meters (yards), leaving everyone else in his wake. Cavendish was carrying so much momentum and this win in Marseille, France’s second-largest city, was so comfortable that he was able to sit up in the saddle and make a hand motion like cracking a whip as he crossed the line. One more stage win will tie Cavendish with Andre Leducq, the Frenchman who got 25 stage wins in the 1920s and 1930s, putting him third on the all-time list. Beyond Leducq is Hinault, who notched up 28 wins in the 1970s and ‘80s. Merckx’s monument is 34, won from 1969 to 1975. MUNICH — Veteran Peru striker Claudio Pizarro has signed a one-year contract extension with Europe and Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich. Pizarro is in his second spell at Bayern after returning to the club from Werder Bremen last year. In total, he has made 281 appearances

for Bayern and scored 112 goals. Pizarro says in a club statement on Thursday: “I am 34 — nothing better could happen to me than signing a contract with Bayern again.” He says he wants to keep playing football as long as possible. IBP The village of Trunyan is squeezed tightly between the lake and the outer crater rim of Batur, an almighty volcano in Kintamani. This is a Bali Aga village, inhabited by descendants of the original Balinese, the people who predate the arrival of the Hindu Majapahit kingdom in the 16th century. It is famous for the Pura Pancering Jagat temple, but unfortunately visitors are not allowed inside. There are also a couple of traditional Bali Aga-style dwellings, and a large banyan tree, which is said to be more

than 1,100 years old. At Kuban sub-village close to Trunyan is a mysterious cemetery that is separated by the lake and accessible only by boat - there is no path along the steep walls of the crater rim. The village of Trunyan itself is situated at the edge of Batur Lake. This location is inaccessible except by boat, and it takes around half an hour across the calm waters. Getting to Lake Batur takes around two hours drive to the northeast of Denpasar along the main road to Buleleng and through Bangli Regency. Unlike the Balinese people, the people of Trunyan do not cremate or bury their dead, but

just lay them out in bamboo cages to decompose, although strangely there is no stench. A macabre collection of skulls and bones lies on the stone platform and the surrounding areas. The dead bodies don’t produce bad smells because of the perfumed scents from a huge Taru Menyan tree growing nearby. Taru means ‘tree’ and Menyan means ‘nice smell’. The name of Terunyan was also derived from these two words. The women from Trunyan are prohibited from going to the cemetery when a dead body is carried there. This follows the deeply rooted belief that if a woman comes to the cemetery

while a corpse is being carried there, there will be a disaster in the village, for example a landslide or a volcanic eruption. Such events have been frequent in the village’s history, but whether women had anything to do with it is a matter of opinion... You can visit both the village of Trunyan and the Kuban cemetery by chartered boat from Kedisan. Sadly, nowadays the boat trips are now blatant tourist traps, as touts and guides strongly urge you to donate your cash to the temple project or leave a donation for the dead. BANDA ACEH — Soldiers, police and volunteers fanned out across an earthquake-damaged region of western Indonesia on Wednesday, scouring the debris of fallen homes and landslides for possible victims of a temblor that killed at least 29 people and injured hundreds. The magnitude-6.1 quake struck Tuesday afternoon at a depth of just 10 kilometers (6 miles) and was centered on the far western tip of Sumatra island in Aceh province. Twelve people were killed and 70 others were injured by a landslide or collapsing buildings in Bener Meriah district, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency. Fauzi, head of the local mitigation

agency, said about 600 houses and building were damaged in the district, where many residents were still staying in tents outside their homes. “What we need right now are tents, since many people prefer to stay outside,” said Fauzi, who like many Indonesians uses a single name. “They all are afraid of aftershocks.” In neighboring Central Aceh district, 17 people were killed and about 350 were injured, said Subhan

JAKARTA - Indonesia technologically is ready to move to green energy, Head of the Indonesian Technology Assessment and Application Agency (BPPT), Marzan Iskandar, said here on Wednesday. “Based on our technological capabilities we are ready. If the change happens approximately green energy could fulﬁll 25 percent of national energy needs in 2025,” he said. In terms of business, however, he said, the target is hard to achieve. Therefore Indonesia should create a conducive investment climate for investors, promote technology development and provide incentives to speed it up. Iskandar believed minimum incentives had been one of the key factors that had made investors reluctant to be involved in the green energy sector. Starting this year however the government through the Energy and Mineral Resource Ministry (ESDM) began providing incentives. “Green energy potential in Indonesia is very large,” Iskandar said. He explained Indonesia can produce 29,000 MW electricity from its geothermal energy source, 75,000 MW from hydro-power and up to 50,000 MW from solar, wind, and waste. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik said the government continued promoting the use of green energy sources through various regulations and policies. The government, he said, has also set the highest benchmark price for solar energy which is 25 cent USD for 25 years. The government expects the use of green energy to reach 25 percent of the national energy needs by 2025.

This cooperation agreement is expected to be able to optimize each of the institutions in carrying out their mandates,” OJK chairman Muliaman D Hadad said at the signing ceremony here on Thursday. The cooperation covers harmonization of regulations in the financial service and tax sector, utilization of data and information for carrying out supervisory functions including data and information about players’ relations in ownership in the financial service sector, education and training as well as counseling for the two parties. Under the agreement the Directorate General of Tax and OJK agreed to help each other in carrying out their duties. Eurozone recession eases as confidence returns Agence France-Presse BRUSSELS - The eurozone recession eased at the end of the second quarter, opening hope of a return to growth in the second half of the year, final data from a key survey signalled on Wednesday. The Markit Eurozone Composite Purchasing Managers Index registered 48.7 points in June compared with 47.7 in May. This was the third monthly increase in a row and marked a 15-month high, albeit still below the threshold of 50 points indicating growth or recession. The survey is closely watched as a leading indicator of activity. “Euro area recession has extended into a record seventh consecutive quarter,” said Markit chief economist Chris Williamson. “However there is good reason to believe that the region is stabilising and on course to return to growth during the second half of the year.” He said it was “most encouraging” to see the Spanish economy contracting at the slowest rate for two years, Italy seeing business activity fall at the slowest pace since September 2011 and France’s downturn also moderating to the weakest level since last August. But he cautioned that with Germany barely growing it was “difficult to identify any real growth drivers”, meaning that the pace of expansion across the 18-nation area “is likely to remain subdued until business confidence improves further.”

SEOUL, South Korea - South Korea’s government said Thursday that it has reached out to North Korea to discuss restarting a jointly run factory park after weeks of testy silence between the two sides. The industrial complex in the North Korean city of Kaesong, just north of the Demilitarized Zone dividing the two Koreas, has been shut since a political showdown in April. As South Korea held military exercises with the U.S. not far from the border, North Korea pulled its 53,000 workers in protest. South Korea then ordered its managers to leave as well, against their wishes. The closing of Kaesong, the centerpiece of joint projects hatched during a previous era of warming ties between the wartime foes, dealt a symbolic blow to reconciliation efforts between the divided Koreas. The project, which facilitated nearly $2 billion

a year in cross-border trade, had been the last joint project left as relations soured over the past five years. The closure also meant a loss of salary for tens of thousands of North Korean workers employed in factories run by 123 South Korean companies, and a loss of goods and orders for business managers who relied on Kaesong to churn out everything from shoes and watches to cables and electrical components. The couture on display in a new exhibit at Kensington Palace shows that each, in her way, made a style statement in Britain and beyond. Princess Margaret — the queen’s younger sister — dressed in some of the boldest styles of the day and was looked up to as one of fashion’s leading ladies. And Diana practically embodied the ‘80s style and was scrutinized for what she wore wherever she went. “We’re looking at how the three women dressed to the trends and how they adapted those rules to the rules of royal dressing,” said Cassie DaviesStrodder, the exhibition’s curator. The show, which opens Thursday, features 21 couture dresses from the three royals’ wardrobes, ranging from regal silk gowns worn by a young queen in the 1950s to the sparkly and sequined numbers Diana sported in the 1980s and 90s. While Diana’s gowns are likely the biggest draw for many visitors, Davies-Strodder said she was nowhere near as adventurous in her style as the fun-loving Margaret, who threw famous parties and mixed with pop stars like The Beatles. Apple hires YSL CEO for ‘special projects’ Associated Press

Apple says it has hired Paul Deneve, the CEO of high-end fashion brand Yves Saint Laurent, to work on special projects reporting to CEO Tim Cook. Cupertino, California-based Apple Inc. did not give more details on what Deneve will be doing. The hire comes as Apple faces increased competition from rivals like Google and Samsung, who are developing their own lines of elegant and often less expensive products. The French luxury name is known for edgy styles — $4,000 strapless body-hugging leather dresses, $1,400 leather jeans and $800 platform shoes. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long ﬂags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.
