Golden age for Kylie as Australia’s pop princess turns 50

Vintage 1774 French wine sells for record 103,700 euros METZ - A bottle of Jura wine dating back to 1774 sold Saturday for a record 103,700 euros ($120,800) at auction in eastern France while two others of the same vintage also touched new highs. “I didn’t think that these bottles would sell for so much. The last record set in 2011 was 57,000 euros,” said auctioneer Brigitte Fenaux from the Jura Encheres auction house. The two other bottles were snapped up for 76,250 euros and 73,200 euros. The bottles of Anatoile Vercel Vin Jaune, among the oldest wines in the world, have been in the possession of Vercel’s descendents in Arbois, in eastern France, the capital of winemaking in the Jura region near Switzerland. The buyers were Canadians and someone who used to buy for Americans with links to France, she said. “There were winemakers in the room who applauded, who were happy, it was moving,” Fenaux

The pint-sized Aussie superstar celebrates her 50th birthday on Monday, another milestone for the singer who is one of the few

celebrities known simply by their first name. To mark the occasion Kylie has said she is planning “an extravaganza” with friends in London, where she is based -- and if her litany of hits including “I Should Be So Lucky” and “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” is anything to go by, she will have no trouble getting the party started. Born in Melbourne on May 28, 1968, Kylie has defied critics who once wrote her off as a “singing budgie” to establish herself as one of Australia’s biggest cultural exports and an international sex symbol. “Kylie is a star that has become iconic outside of just singing,” Australian fashion expert Paula Joye told AFP of the country’s highest-selling artist of all time. “She’s become part of the fabric of Australian culture.” Kylie was just 11 when she appeared in the television series “Skyways”, but is best known for her star turn as Charlene in longrunning soap opera “Neighbours” from 1986 to 1988. She and her co-star Jason Donovan won

popularity as an on-screen couple and were secretly a real-life item at the same time, although their romance did not last. Her first single -- a cover of 1960s Little Eva hit “Locomotion” -- reached number one in Australia in 1987 and became a global hit, launching the girl-next-door’s new career as a pop star and, later, dance diva. She teamed up with Donovan for 1988 duet “Especially For You”, which sold more than a million copies in Britain alone and topped the charts across Europe and Australasia. While Jason’s career since then has seen him star in musicals and speak frankly about his struggles with drug addiction, Kylie went on to record top-selling singles such as “Better the Devil You Know”, “Spinning Around” and “All The Lovers” -- performing them around the world in glitzy showgirl outfits. “On stage, she always looks like a giant sequin,” said Australian fan Troy Lester, who pursued a career in costume design and fashion after falling in love with Kylie’s costumes. “It’s incredible that you can be this little ball of energy and sparkle so much... She’s a little pocket rocket that just keeps going and it’s great to have that kind of positivity in your life.” (afp)

Real Madrid’s Spanish defender Sergio Ramos (C) lifts the trophy after winning the UEFA Champions League final football match between Liverpool and Real Madrid at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev, Ukraine on May 26, 2018. Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 3-1.

Brilliant Bale breaks Liverpool hearts as Real Madrid win Champions League

Gareth Bale came off the bench to score twice, including one of the all-time great goals in a Champions League final, as Real Madrid beat Liverpool 3-1 in Kiev on Saturday to take the trophy for the third year running. Bale’s jaw-dropping overhead kick in the 64th minute put Real 2-1 up moments after his introduction, following a dramatic start to the second half in which Karim Benzema gave Real the lead as a result of a Loris Karius howler. Sadio Mane had briefly restored parity, but Bale put Real in front again and then sealed the triumph late on with a long-range strike that the unfortunate Karius could only punch into the net. Jurgen Klopp’s and Liverpool’s own evening was marred by the loss of a distraught Mohamed Salah to injury in the first half, the Egyptian coming off half an hour in

having damaged his shoulder. This was not to be Salah’s night, with Real allowing Zinedine Zidane to become the first coach ever to win the Champions League three years in a row. “With a team like this we can go far, but to win three of them, it’s something crazy,” Zidane said. Madrid are the first team to achieve that feat since Bayern Munich in 1976. This is their fourth title in five years, and their 13th overall. Cristiano Ronaldo has now won five in his great career, although he later cast a cloud over the night by hinting that he could soon leave the club, saying: “It was

very nice to be at Real Madrid.” However, it was Bale’s evening, and when asked if it was the best goal he had ever scored, he said: “I’d have to say it is, on the biggest stage in world football to score a goal like that is a dream come true.” But Bale has not been a regular in the Real team this season and he admitted he will now consider his future in the weeks ahead. “I feel I should be playing every week and if that’s not the case here it’s something I need to consider. We will sit down in the summer and try to resolve things.” The Welshman had been tipped to feature in the starting line-up but was left out for Isco -- just as he had been in the final against Juventus last year -- before making an emphatic impact as a substitute.

- Salah’s tears For Liverpool, the game will be remembered for the disaster that befell goalkeeper Karius in the second half, and for Salah’s tears as he departed the pitch at the NSC Olympiyskyi. The Egyptian hurt his left shoulder as he went down in a challenge with Sergio Ramos in the 25th minute. Five minutes later he made way for Adam Lallana, and

his presence at the World Cup is now in doubt. “We wanted everything and got nothing. We lost an important player and probably Egypt lost for the World Cup an important player,” Klopp said. Salah’s injury, and that which forced Real’s Dani Carvajal off before the break, temporarily took the sting out of the game after an enthralling start, with Liverpool on top. Continued to page 6

Colossal cak of Bali Post Goes to School at SMAN 2 Tabanan

TABANAN - The splendid Bali Post Goes to School (BPGTS) and Cultural Bazaar at SMAN 2 Tabanan high school held on Friday (May 25) was graced by colossal cak a cappella and barong bangkung show. The colossal cak tells the story about the struggle of a Tabanan’s woman named Lastri performed by 500 students.

The coach and instructor of the colossal cak, I Wayan Ananda, said there are no obstacles in the preparation of the colossal cak training. Before being performed to enliven the activities of the Bali Post Goes to School and Cultural Bazaar, the colossal cak fragmentary with the storyline of I Lastri, a heroine of Tabanan, was also displayed during the anniversary of National Awakening Day recently. The fragmentary show by the students of SMAN 2 Tabanan is said to describe the personality in the blood sheds of the struggle that resurrects as

well as inflames the soul and the body, nationalism, patriotism and love for the country related to the beauty of the independence and peace of the homeland. “There is a forgotten heroine of Tabanan, whereas she was able to control Tabanan’s army before the Puputan Margarana (all out war in Marga) happened,” he said. Furthermore, Wayan Ananda told about the story of heroine Lastri giving an emphasis on the incident when the fighters came from Karangasem who got victory at Tanah Aron, and then weapon logistics arrived from Java. When getting to Tabanan, due to the role of Lastri who could seduce Wagimin to fall in love with her, the weaponry in the headquarters of Tabanan could be seized. “In principle, the constraints often occur between the learning process and exercise. By and large, we take time in the afternoon or Friday morning,” he said. (kmb28)

Activities

TABANAN - Ritual paraphernalia of Galungan will usually experience a price hike near the holiday. On that account, Hindu housewives in Bali prepare their banten or oblation and Galungan ritual paraphernalia far advance. At least, it has been done two months before the holiday. This measure is taken considering the price of raw materials has not increased yet at that time so it can save expenses in the case of making banten. A housewife, Sri Widara, 32, from Bajera Belayu, Beringkit, Marga, said that she has been preparing ritual paraphernalia of Galungan since two months ago. “First of all, I make a long-lasting and important banten. Then approaching the Galungan, we just need to buy the remaining needs

and the fruits,” she said. She makes the preparations gradually because the oblations required for Galungan has quite a lot of kinds. Thus, Widara chose to prepare it in advance with the reason that the raw materials of Galungan ritual paraphernalia is much cheaper than when purchasing near the Galungan. “Therefore, it becomes more cost effective,” she said. According to Widara, her fruit needs will combine the local fruit and imported fruits. The local fruits she often used are banana, sapodilla and tangerine. “The rest are imported fruits and I choose the preferred fruits of the family. So, after the worship they will not get wasted,” she added. (kmb24)

The Magical Mumbai (Bombay) – what is there to see

MUMBAI swathes of colour as women shimmy along the pavements in their pink, red and orange saris, sometimes slipping in and out of nearby bazaars and beyond that, the contrasting grey slums of corrugated roofs surrounded by plush high rise office buildings or apartments. This is Mumbai (formerly Bombay), of Slumdog Millionaire fame, and anyone who has seen the film would probably be surprised that actually, Mumbai is the financial powerhouse of India, where the stock exchange is the oldest in Asia and where real estate is the most expensive in the whole of the subcontinent. The sun was high and hot as I inched my

way to the Taj Mahal Palace Tower Hotel, and indeed anyone venturing to the home of Bollywood would do well to start their tourist trail here. The hotel is ideally located for the bars and restaurants where those in the know would recognize a celebrity or two. And of course, for the sights. The Gateway of India arch

Opposite the hotel, overlooking the Arabian sea, is the monumental arch the Gateway of India. This symbol of both Old Bombay and modern Mumbai was built in the IndoSaracenic style using yellow Kharodi basalt, it commemorates the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay December 1911.

The arch stands at an angle on the square perched at the edge of the Arabian sea, where dozens of colourful leisure boats bob on their lees.

Expansion of Ngurah Rai Airport

Parliament emphasizes on Balinese architecture and environment

for arts sake and the love of their Lord Shiva.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

It’s easy to see British influence in the architecture and the most obvious is Victoria Terminal station renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus after British rule ended in 1947. A world heritage sight, yet this is a living, breathing train station, where three million people pass through each day on 1,000 trains making it the busiest and largest station on earth. Its sheer size is impressive, but the beauty of the station is awesome. Think St Pancras and quadruple it. Extravagantly ornamented, it combines neo-Gothic style of the early Victorian era with elements of traditional Indian architecture and gives more than an eyeful of pleasure. (net)

DENPASAR - The expansion of Ngurah Rai International Airport is expected not to neglect Balinese architecture and environmental sustainability. It considers there are mangroves and live coral reef that will be affected from the expansion of the parking lot (apron) project.

Trash containers is a short-term solution for the air pollution generated by stench so that it no longer disturbs the comfort of students and teachers at local school.

Overcome pollution at SDN 5 Banyuning

“For short term, there are about 10 hectares of reclamation on the north for the need of apron. Next August it should have been clear. The regulation was already issued on May 18 by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime, Minister of the Environment, and the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries,” said Secretary of Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives, I Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana, after attending a meeting between Commission III and the Angkasa Pura I in the parliamentary building on Friday (May 25). According to Kariyasa, the fairly tight completion target becomes a challenge for the Angkasa Pura I, particularly in maintaining the reputation of Bali and the country ahead of the international events of the IMF-World Bank Annual Meeting. However, Angkasa Pura I has convinced the parliament to complete the project on schedule. “We will be watching every term, every month,”

added this PDI-P politician from Busungbiu. Kariyasa added that the IMF-World Bank Annual Meeting will be attended by about 18,000 delegates and 27 heads of state. Ngurah Rai Airport is likely to be used for country first ring aircraft such as Russia, the United States, and China. The authority of Angkasa Pura 1 is also said to repair VIP terminal and re-arrange to prevent congestion. “Meanwhile, there has been a commitment if this airport should apply Balinese style in the exterior and interior because this airport is the entrance of Bali. They have now prepared the experts. This is an emergency,” he explained. Commission III, continued Kariyasa, also cautioned the Angkasa Pura I to protect the environment around the site expansion even though the results of research by the Udayana University indicated if the condition of living corals only remains about 10 percent. Then, the mangrove ecosystem should be well maintained. Moreover, the expansion of the first phase spending the state budget of IDR 2.2 trillion will be continued after the implementation of the IMF-World Bank Annual Meeting. “It is not entirely reclaimed, but only about 8 hectares of the total area of 10 hectares. The coral reef should be preserved so they remain alive,” he added. (kmb32)

DLH places trash container

SINGARAJA - The Buleleng Environment Agency (DLH), places trash containers at SDN 5 Banyuning elementary school, Singaraja. This is a short-term solution for the air pollution generated by stench so that it no longer disturbs the comfort of students and teachers at local school. Placement of the trash container has been coordinated with the government of Banyuning village. Acting Head of the Buleleng Environment Agency, I Made Gelgel, confirmed on Friday (May 25) that his agency already prepared a trash container. Placement of the container is only temporary so the dust bin currently complained to trigger stench will no longer disturb school activities. However, placement of the container is waiting for approval from the village authorities. This happens because the current dust bin made permanently triggers pollution. If agreed to replace, it will be required additional officers to transport the trash collected in the container. “We have coordinated this to related agencies. The garbage dis-

carded into the trash bin is indeed not only from household. However, there is also garbage unworthy to be dumped at the location,” he said. Gelgel added that from the monitoring conducted, many people seem to dump other than household garbage. As a result, it then decomposes and causes a striking smell and disrupts the convenience of students’ and teachers’ activities at SDN 5 Banyuning elementary school. As reported previously, the students and teachers of the SDN 5 Banyuning complained due to the stench of rotting garbage from the piles of garbage near the school library. Aside from the stench of rotten garbage, flies or termites often emerge from those piles of garbage and disturb the comfort of students doing activities in the library room. To avoid this issue to become a prolonged polemic, the Head of the Buleleng Education Agency, Gede Suyasa, promised the repair of school facilities and infrastructure located on Jalan Pulau Komodo, Singaraja. Series of Galungan Day

Trash volume predicted to increase by 100 percent

GIANYAR - The volume of garbage in Gianyar district during the Galungan holiday series is predicted to jump up to 100 percent or twice of the usual day. Significant increase mainly occurs after Galungan or when the Hindus have completed the whole series of ceremonies. To handle this, the Gianyar Environment Agency (DLH) has alerted the janitor. The officers keep working even during holidays.

Head of the DLH Gianyar, I Wayan Kujus Pawitra, said on Friday (May 25) that daily garbage production in Gianyar averagely reaches 1,511 cubic meters or 45.4 tons. However, when entering the feast, there is an increase. Particularly on Galungan, a few days before Galungan the increase in waste volume reaches 30 percent. On the Penampahan Galungan it increases to 50 percent. “After the Galungan, the increase is significant, up to 100 percent,” he said. The garbage is dominated by used jejaitan (ritual paraphernalia) and food scraps. This phenomenon, said Kujus, is a natural thing. His agency understood the condition considering the ritual paraphernalia are not a few. To make the trash well-handled, his agency did not dismiss the janitor. However, his agency will

We do not have holidays,” he said. The janitor will be divided into

several shifts. Their work schedule will be arranged in such a way so that they are able to perform the tasks of sanitation maximally. “We get it around to be effective. We make sure the garbage during holidays can be handled,” he said.

Furthermore, Kujus requested the public to understand the condition of waste management during the holidays. Delay of garbage transportation or other services can happen. Other than being caused by the increase in the volume of

garbage, not all of the trash in Gianyar can be accommodated in the Temesi landfill. “With such large number, we also send garbage to Suwung landfill. So, this should be tolerated by community,” he affirmed. (kmb24)

SDN 1 Mambang won the action and song competition for the level of elementary school.

TABANAN - Although having practiced and made preparation for all the contest equipment in two days, it did not dampen the spirit of Bali Post action and song group of the SDN 1 Mambang elementary school, East Selemadeg subdistrict. Moreover, its appearance could draw the attention of the jury. As a result, it won the action and song competition for the level of elementary school. The school teacher and coach, I Wayan Budi Susila, said that for the overall properties are entirely prepared by the students. He only provided with direction for the theme of clothing made of newspaper waste. “Genuinely, all the properties are prepared by the students themselves. They made their own because they are accustomed to

making handicrafts from paper materials, boxes and others,” he said. Related to the BPGTS activities and the cultural bazaar organized at the SMAN 2 Tabanan high school, he said to get very important benefits and certainly in accordance with the implementation of the 2013 curriculum. “This kind of activity is very good because it is able to introduce more about the reading habit and I believe junior and senior high school students today are rarely willing to read newspapers,” he said. Likewise, the Bali Post action and song contest brought in many benefits that can be accepted by the participants, such as training of characters because indirectly the students did mutual

assistance in making recycled clothing from basic materials of newspaper waste as well as preparing innovative-creative works. “Of course when preparing the properties of contest, I am confident they have read first followed by the process of making clothes,” he said. According to him, the implementation of the 2013 curriculum will inevitably require the students to read because there are observations. “If they are not directed from the influence of handphone and gadget, they would go wild, and we at elementary school of Mambang have a trick, by applying full day learning, formal learning in the morning and character education in the afternoon filled with various,” he explained. Malaysian playboy financier in cross-hairs after poll upset

KUALA LUMPUR - Baby-faced playboy Jho Low, a financier at the centre of Malaysia’s 1MDB mega-scandal, may find his days of hobnobbing with celebrities and splurging on property and art are numbered as the new government pledges to bring him to justice.

Suspected of being a key figure in one of the world’s biggest frauds along with ousted leader Najib Razak and his cronies, the chubby, bespectacled businessman has become a lightning rod for public fury at the controversy. He led a high-rolling lifestyle after allegedly stealing huge sums from 1MDB. He hung out with celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, partied with Paris Hilton, and reportedly spent vast sums in New York’s hottest nightspots. As investigations into the controversy accelerated, the Malaysian took to a luxury yacht allegedly bought with stolen cash and sailed around Asia, until the vessel was seized off Bali recently as part of 1MDB-linked probes. The Wall Street Journal reported that he was on the Thai holiday island of Phuket earlier this month awaiting the election results. His current whereabouts are unclear. But time could be running out for the flamboyant 36year-old after Najib’s scandal-mired coalition suffered a shock defeat at the May 9 poll in large part due to public anger at 1MDB. The new government, headed by Najib’s ex-mentor Mahathir Mohamad, has reopened probes into the sophisticated fraud and wants to haul Jho Low -- whose full name is Low Taek Jho -- back to Malaysia. Abdul Razak Idris, a former senior officer from the anti-graft agency which led probes into the scandal until they were shut down under Najib, said he believed Low was the mastermind. “He must be arrested and brought back to Malaysia so that we can bring back all the money parked abroad,” he told AFP. Low, who held no official positions at 1MDB but is believed to have exerted great influence over the fund, has previously denied any wrongdoing. He could not be contacted for this article. (afp)

Thousands march in France against Macron reforms

Eric FEFERBERG / AFP

Protesters known as black blocs demonstrate on May 22, 2018 in Paris during a nationwide day protest by French public sector employees and public servants against the overhauls proposed by French President, calling them an “attack” by the centrist leader against civil services as well as their economic security.

PARIS - Tens of thousands of people took to the streets across France on Saturday to demonstrate against Emmanuel Macron’s policies, but the turnout fell short of expectations and the president said nothing would stop his economic reforms. Organisers had called for a “popular tide” of protest for the marches, which were organised by 60 unions, political parties and associations angry at Macron’s policies perceived to favour the rich. However, the turnout was well below previous similar marches and Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said it was “a bit thin”. The ministry estimated that just

over 93,000 demonstrated in 142 places throughout the country, while the left-wing CGT union put the number at 250,000. In Paris, police reported just 21,000 protesters, while the CGT claimed 80,000. Occurrence, an independent monitoring group working for media outlets including AFP, said 31,700 demonstrated in the capital. That compared with a police count of 40,000 and the CGT’s count of 100,000 for the last such protest in the French capital on May 5. The CGT had claimed a national turnout of 323,000 on March 22. Macron said Friday during a

visit to Russia that the protests “won’t stop” his progress. “I won’t preside in light of the polls or demonstrations, because we have done too much of that,” (in the past) he said. Saturday’s marches follow strikes on Tuesday when public-sector employees from street sweepers to teachers joined rail workers in walking out over what they called an “attack” against public services. It was the third day of stoppages and demonstrations by public workers since last year’s sweeping election win by Macron, who has pledged to reduce spending, trim jobs and overhaul large parts of the vast French state. Significance of Galungan Feast Day Series

Galungan falling on Buda (Wednesday) Kliwon Dungulan is the eagerly awaited feast day by the Hindu communities in Indonesia. This feast day falls every 210 days as it is based on intersection of panca wara (five-day week) and sapta wara (seven-day week). The series of celebrations to welcome Galungan has begun 25 days earlier namely on Tumpek Pengatag. On this day, Hindu followers perform a ritual to respect for plants so that they could bear fruits and lushly flower to be used in welcoming Galungan.

Fed-up Spanish cities are bursting Airbnb’s bubble

Spain may be one of the world’s top tourist destinations, but many people in its biggest cities have grown exasperated with Airbnb-style rentals. And now, their city councils are taking action. Airbnb and other peer-to-peer rental websites have for years been credited with enabling lovers of travel and culture to find new ways to explore foreign lands. However, complaints have abounded in Spain that greedy landlords are throwing out longterm tenants in order to cash in on the tourist flow, and that the shortterm leases are pushing up rent. By introducing a slew of new rules, Madrid’s leftwing city hall plans to make it impossible for short-term rental companies to rent out 95 percent of apartments in the Spanish capital by the end of the year. To get a holiday rental licence homeowners will have to prove their property has a separate entrance from the rest of the building -- a condition that is in most cases impossible to fulfil. Homeowners who rent their primary residence for less than three

months a year will be exempt. “We are aware that this is a very restrictive condition, and that is our intention,” Madrid’s city councillor for sustainable urban development, Jose Manuel Calvo, told AFP. He said certain Madrid neighbourhoods have reached “the same saturation level” as Barcelona, where a boom in holiday rentals has drained the city’s housing supply and pushed up rents, sparking a backlash against tourists that saw protesters take to the streets. - Locals out? There are now around 9,000 flats in Madrid that are rented out to tourists, six to seven times more than in 2013, Calvo said. Of these, about 2,000 operate without a licence. In some buildings landlords have evicted all local residents in order to rent their flats to tourists for more money, Calvo explained. “The consequence is that these

neighbourhoods end up emptying out gradually, and this must be prevented. There is still time,” he said. Madrid city hall in January stopped issuing new licences for tourist apartments, and only plans to resume licensing once the new system is in place.

- ‘Theme parks’ Other cities in Spain, the world’s second most visited country after France according to the UN World Tourism Organization, are also facing a surge in the number of sharing economy short-term rentals, threatening hotel businesses. In the Mediterranean port city of Valencia the number of peer-topeer holiday apartments has soared by 30 percent since 2016. While the situation is not as critical as in Madrid and Barcelona, the city’s leftwing mayor wants a raft of new regulations to be approved by July. “It seems important to have rules in place that, without stopping this

model of the sharing economy, are compatible with cities’ desire to preserve the spirit of their neighbourhoods, without becoming theme parks,” the city’s economic development coordinator, Julio Olmos, told AFP. The plan is to apply the same laws regulating hotels to tourist rentals. In practice under the new rules, only apartments on the ground floor or first floor can be legally rented out to tourists. In the old town centre the legislation will be even tighter. There, licences will only be awarded to flats in buildings specifically designated for holiday rentals. - Internet tracking To ensure the rules are respected, Madrid and Valencia plan to follow Barcelona’s lead. The Catalan city employs 40 people tasked with poring through holiday rental sites to ensure that properties have the proper licences. Between mid-2016 and mid2017 Barcelona city hall, headed by a former housing rights activist,

ordered the closure of over 2,300 holiday rental flats. Fewer than 750 have obeyed the order, with legal proceedings under way against those still resisting. Airbnb has, however, removed 1,500 ads for unlicensed flats, helping to return the properties to the regular rental market. Palma de Mallorca, capital of Mediterranean tourist destination the Balearic Islands, is going even further -- it is poised to ban nearly all short-term rentals of private homes like those listed on Airbnb. The island city saw the number of holiday flats jump 40 percent between 2013 and 2017. The surge is blamed for a shortage of long-term rental apartments, forcing some locals and seasonal workers to live in vans and campsites in the summer because they can’t find affordable housing. Detached homes will be available to rent for tourists only if they are located near the airport, in industrial areas, or in buildings not designated for residential use. (afp)

Next processions include the Penyekeban Galungan, Penyajaan Galungan and Penampahan Galungan. Penyekeban Galungan falls on Sunday (Redite Paing Dungulan) which is usually followed by a process of ‘ripening’ (penyekeban) fruits. Philosophically, Penyekeban Galungan can mean that humans should shrink the ego of their deeds, so that they can get closer to God. After this procession is Penyajaan Galungan falling on Monday (Soma Pon Dungulan). It is time for the Hindus to prepare various cakes to be used in the ritual oblation of Galungan. Philosophically, Penyajaan Galungan is interpreted as an attempt to make creation with sweet and useful characteristic for humans. Moralized knowledge is an expected effect that occurs in harmony with the celebration of Penyajaan Galungan. When knowledge comes without morality, then the destruction of the world is at stake. Meanwhile, Penampahan Galungan falling on Tuesday (Anggara Wage Dungulan) is a long-awaited day by the Hindus in Bali. Penampahan Galungan is celebrated by preparing

very festive cooking. Slaughtering a swine is a commonplace activity carried out. On this day, all members of the Hindu community will try to do their best in preparing delicacies to be eaten on the day of Galungan on the next day. Philosophically, the celebration of Penampahan Galungan is actually put emphasis on the effort to eradicate the existing animal nature in human. Thus, on the celebration of Galungan humans could be freed from the animal nature. Swine is a symbol of laziness, so that slaughtering it then symbolizes that laziness can be eliminated. Penampahan Galungan is also followed by natab byakala ritual in the afternoon for self-purification. The philosophical meaning of Penampahan Galungan is gradually replaced with literal meaning, namely slaughtering swine for the preparation of Galungan. Ignorance about the significance of the celebration may probably have side impacts such as followed by drunkenness and so forth. “Philosophically, the three series of Galungan feast day are actually a process of self-purifi-

cation so that in the celebration of Galungan we truly celebrate the victory of dharma (truth) against adharma (untruth). If the philosophical meaning is set aside, we do not get goodness, but adharma will even go rampant in the life of community,” said Chairman of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) of Bali, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Sudiana. Nevertheless, in this current globalization era, the philosophy of Galungan feast day series has undergone a shift in meaning. An academician, Dr. I.B. Radendra

Suastama, believed that the shift in the meaning is influenced by the Hindu perspective in understanding the procession of Galungan and Kuningan. It is inseparable from the growth of pragmatic, consumptive and instant mental attitude among the members of Hindu community today. Actually, the significance of each series of Galungan and Kuningan feast day is essentially philosophically profound. Starting from the meaning of self-restraint, self-preparation to the essence of meaning against lust

in human self to victory in the fight of dharma against adharma which is actually going on inside human self now tends to be more oriented in and focused on the aspects of celebration and hedonism. “Self-indulgence of earthly desires is hued by capital hegemony wrapped in communal traditions on spiritual meanings. This phenomenon needs to be clarified so that it could be corresponding to the initial idea. To that end, it will require an ongoing communication and dissemination,” said Dr. I.B. Radendra. (kmb)

Tourist Visits to Tanah Lot Remains Normal Tanah Lot attraction stays a favorite destination for foreign tourists. Although there is travel advice issued by five countries to Indonesia because of bombing action in Surabaya and Sidoarjo some time ago, it does not affect tourist visits to the destination located at Beraban village, Kediri, Tabanan. “Until now, foreign tourist visits to Tanah Lot are still normal,” said Operations Manager of Tanah Lot attraction, Ketut Toya Adnyana. However, added Toya Adnyana, domestic tourist visits currently decreases. It is not caused by the impact of bombing terror in Surabaya, but because of entering the fasting month. “The decline in the number of domestic tourist arrivals happens due to entering the fasting month. Despite the decline, the

average domestic tourist visit to Tanah Lot still meets the normal number of visits,” he added. Based on the data of visits during the past week, the average visit of foreign tourists remains stable between 6,000 and 4,000 visits per day. Meanwhile, the number of domestic tourist visits decreased from 6,000 visits per day to about 1,300 to 1,500 visits per day. A week before the fasting month, the average tourist arrivals to Tanah Lot reached 10,000 visits per day. After entering the fasting, the average visit reaches 7,500,000 per day. According to Toya Adnyana, foreign tourists visits are mostly from China and do not include in the five countries having issued travel advice to Indonesia. Indian tourists are also starting to grow.

They love cultural tourism, in addition to nature and culinary delights. Meanwhile, China is not included in the country that issued travel advice. Perhaps, due to such reason the visit of foreign tourists to Tanah Lot does not get affected,” he said. Thousands of foreign tourists do various activities ranging from walking in tourist areas, making temporary tattoos, visiting sacred serpents, holy water, shooting, shopping, having culinary tours or just relaxing at cafes or restaurants while chatting with friends or their families. After that, they wait for sunset being famous for its beautiful view. They are said to be curious, so this moment is always eagerly awaited by tourists. (kmb)

Trump and Kim raise summit hopes after days of brinkmanship

Ireland overturns abortion ban in landslide vote

DUBLIN - Ireland voted by a landslide to ditch its strict abortion laws in a landmark referendum that Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said had finally lifted decades of stigma and shame.

More than 66 percent of voters in what has been a traditionally staunchly Catholic country backed repealing the constitutional ban on terminations, triggering scenes of tearful jubilation in Dublin on Saturday after a divisive and often emotional campaign. Hugging, celebrating, singing and cheering wildly, thousands crammed into the courtyard of Dublin Castle, where the official result was declared, chanting “Yes! Yes! Yes!” “Wonderful, wonderful, today is wonderful!” said 65-year-old Eileen Shields, who had been ostracised for falling pregnant outside of marriage when she was 18. The crowds cheered and popped champagne corks as the result was announced. Women and men wearing “Repeal” tops and “Yes” badges waved Irish flags and placards reading “Thank you”, with love hearts on. Speaking through tears, Stasia Clancy, 64, said: “This is like an explosion of the repression and the suppression of the last 100 years.”

SEOUL - Plans for a landmark summit with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un are moving “very nicely”, US President Donald Trump said Sunday, as the South’s leader said Kim told him the talks would be a historic opportunity to end decades of confrontation. The latest conciliatory declarations capped a turbulent few days of diplomatic brinkmanship on the Korean Peninsula that had sent tensions soaring. Trump rattled the region on Thursday by cancelling a planned June 12 meeting with Kim in Singapore, citing “open hostility” from Pyongyang. But within 24 hours he reversed course, saying it could still go ahead after productive talks were held with North Korean officials. “It’s moving along very nicely,” Trump told reporters late Saturday when asked for an update. “We’re looking at June 12 in Singapore. That hasn’t changed.” Trump’s unpredictability sparked a sudden and surprise meeting on Saturday between Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in -- only the fourth time leaders from the two countries have ever met -- as they scrambled to get the talks back on track. Pictures showed them shaking hands and embracing on the North Korean side of the Demilitarised Zone separating the two nations. Moon said Kim reached out to him to arrange the hasty meeting “without any formality”. There the North Korean leader described the Singapore summit as a landmark opportunity to end decades of confrontation. “He... expressed his intention to put an end to the history of war and confrontation through the success of the North-US summit and to cooperate for peace and prosperity,” Moon told reporters in Seoul on Sunday. Pyongyang’s state-run KCNA news agency said Kim “expressed his fixed will on the historic DPRK-US summit talks”, using the official abbreviation for North Korea. Kim said the two Koreas should “positively cooperate with each other as ever to improve the DPRK-U.S. relations and establish mechanism for permanent and durable peace,” KCNA added, saying South and North Korea would hold another round of “high-level” talks on June 1. At Dublin’s RDS count centre, 40-year-old nurse Ruth Bowie wept at the results. She told AFP: “I had to leave my country to get the healthcare that I needed when I was told that my baby wouldn’t survive outside the womb and I’ve told my story over and over again just in the hope that this day would come -- and it’s finally come.”

Indonesia passes tougher terror law after suicide attacks

Indonesia passed a new law Friday that will give police more power to take pre-emptive action against terror suspects following the country’s deadliest Islamist attacks in years. The bill had been stalled for almost two years as parliament wrangled over key details, including how to define terrorism. But a wave of deadly suicide bombings on churches and a police station this month -- claimed by the Islamic State group -- heaped pressure on lawmakers to pass the legislation. President Joko Widodo threatened to issue an emergency regulation if parliament failed to pass the beefed-up law. Police will now be allowed to detain terror suspects for as long as 21 days, up from the current one week, and they will also be able to charge people for joining or recruiting for a “terrorist” organisation, at home or abroad.

- ‘Veil of stigma lifted’ -

The final results of Friday’s referendum showed 66.4 percent voted for removing the constitutional ban, while 33.6 voted against. Some 1,429,981 votes were cast for Yes. The turnout was 64 percent. Among the 40 constituencies, the pro-choice vote peaked at 78 percent in Dublin Bay South, while rural Donegal was the only one to vote against liberalising abortion, by 52 percent. “A quiet revolution has taken place,” Varadkar said in a speech at Dublin Castle. “No more stigma. The veil of secrecy is lifted. No more isolation. The burden of shame is gone.” He said Saturday would be remembered as the day Ireland “stepped out from under the last of our shadows and into the light. The day we came of age as a country.” (afp)

This file photo taken on May 13, 2018 shows a man looking at burnt-out motorcycles following a bomb blast outside the Surabaya Centre Pentecostal Church (Surabaya Gereja Pantekosta Pusat) in Surabaya, East Java province. Indonesia passed a new law on May 25, 2018 that will give police more power to take pre-emptive action against terror suspects in the wake of the country’s deadliest Islamist attacks in years.

Hundreds of Indonesians flocked to Syria and Iraq in recent years to fight alongside IS and many have since returned, but police had previously been powerless to arrest them. The revamped law also carries tougher jail terms and opens the door to the military playing a bigger role in Indonesia’s counter-terrorism efforts. But the military’s patchy rights record has raised concerns among activists who said the bill’s vague wording could lead to a crackdown on any group seen as a threat. Jakarta should instead focus on improving programmes to deradicalise militants, said Andreas Harsono, Indonesia researcher for Human Rights Watch. “I don’t see this new law as the ultimate cure to eradicate terrorism,” he said. “It’s time for a sober assessment of why most deradicalisation programmes have not worked.” Open discrimination against minorities -- including Christians, the ethnic Chinese population and LGBT community

-- were emboldening Islamist radicals in the world’s biggest Muslim majority country, Harsono added. The suicide attacks in Indonesia’s second-biggest city Surabaya, which killed 13, were committed by two families, including a nine and 12-year-old girl. The families were part of the same religious study group and had ties to an extremist network allied to Islamic State. Indonesia -- which is set to host the Asian Games in three months and an IMF-World Bank meeting in Bali in October -- has long struggled with Islamist militancy. Security forces arrested hundreds of militants during a sustained crackdown since the 2002 Bali bombing, which killed more than 200 people, mostly foreign tourists. Most attacks in recent years have been limited to low-level operations against security forces, but police said they needed beefed-up terror laws to crack down on homegrown militancy. (afp)

Blasts trigger panic among audience of terrorist suspect trial

JAKARTA - Two blasts near the South Jakarta Court sparked panic among the audience present at the trial of terrorist suspect Aman Abdurahman alias Oman Rochman alias Abu Sulaiman bin Ade Sudarma on Friday. The blasts occurred at 9:10 a.m. local time, and the trial scheduled for Abdurahman was suspended for three minutes. Densus 88, the police`s anti-

terror squad, guarding the courtroom called on the audience to remain calm. South Jakarta`s Police Chief Senior Commissioner Indra Jafar noted that the source of the blast was a barrel containing chemical liquid that exploded owing to the negligence of workers. “It is not an act of terror. The worker tried to cut the drum to use it as a trash can. Unfortunately,

some chemical liquid was still left behind in the drum,” he said, adding that the fire sparks emanating from the welding process triggered the explosion. Jafar remarked that the explosion occurred at a construction site across the South Jakarta Court. “(The blast took place) at a construction site where drums containing chemical liquid were left behind. It would be dangerous

when ignited by fire,” he revealed. No casualties were reported in the incident, but the police have temporarily closed public access to Ampera Street. Abdurahman was named a suspect in a series of bomb attacks, including at Thamrin Street, Jakarta, in a church in Samarinda and Kampung Melayu in Jakarta. He was accused of masterminding the terror attacks.

Abdurahman was due to be freed on August 17, 2017, after serving a nine-year jail sentence, for his involvement in the military training of Jamaah Islamiyah in the Jalin mountains, Aceh Besar District, in 2010. However, on August 18, 2017, the police had named him a suspect in the bomb attack on Thamrin street, Jakarta. He was charged with Law No. 15 of 2003 on antiterrorism. (ant)

LOS ANGELES - The Golden State Warriors showed their championship mettle Saturday, roaring back to rout the Houston Rockets 115-86 to force a decisive game seven in the NBA Western Conference finals.

DENPASAR - Pantai Karang is a small section of Sanur Beach’s entire coastal length. Karang means coral in the local tongue and the slightly coarse white coral sand is named after the reef that emerges at low tide. Calm waves off a coast that’s protected by an extension of Sanur’s reef makes for a great beach scene for families with kids. Swimming, playing, and sea kayaking are the typical Sanur activities to be enjoyed here. There are inexpensive local-run gear rental operations nearby that don’t impose time limits.

Klay Thompson scored 35 points, Stephen Curry scored 29 and Kevin Durant added 23 as the Warriors rallied from a 17-point first-quarter deficit to knot the bestof-seven series at 3-3 -- and keep their bid to reach a fourth straight championship series alive. “I don’t want to go home,” said Thompson, who made nine threepointers. “We worked too hard this season to go home.” But in the early going it looked like the Warriors would do just that. The Rockets, who led the league with 65 regular season wins, ran roughshod over Golden State in the opening quarter as they raced to a 39-22 lead. Houston’s Most Valuable Player candidate James Harden dominated early, finishing with 32 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. But the Warriors defense clamped down on Harden in the second half and the Rockets felt the absence of injured point guard Chris Paul, who suffered a strained right hamstring in the Rockets’ game-five victory. “I thought Klay was amazing tonight, not just for 35 points and the nine threes, but his defense,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “The guy’s a machine.” The Warriors showed signs of life in the second quarter, putting together a 23-11 scoring run and trimming the deficit to five points. But they trailed 61-51 at halftime. Then came one of their trademark third-quarter surges. Golden State opened the second half on an 11-0 scoring run, taking the lead for

Soon, the rout was on. “I think the turnovers got them going,” said Houston coach Mike D’Antoni, whose team finished with 21 turnovers. “Then once you get them going and they get out of the box -- we didn’t communicate really well two or three times, and

then they just got on a roll. You get these guys on a roll, and they can hurt you.” - ‘A head scratcher’ Kerr was at a loss to explain the early defensive lapses. “We lost people in transition. We didn’t communicate. We gave up wide-open threes,” he said. “It was sort of a head scratcher. I was more

worried about the offense coming into the game than the defense. But the defense eventually kicked in, and obviously that led to transition, and the shotmaking in the second half was just amazing.” The Warriors outscored the Rockets 64-25 in the second half, limiting Harden to 10 points after the break. Eric Gordon, starting in place

of Paul, scored just three of his 19 points after the interval. “I think once we settled down defensively and started staying with people and not making mistakes in transition, then we wore them down a little bit,” Kerr said. The lack of defensive focus that plagued Golden State early was mirrored by the Rockets late. (afp)

Salah injury ‘serious’, says Liverpool boss Klopp Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp revealed that Mohamed Salah’s injury that forced him off in the first half of the Champions League final on Saturday was “serious”. “It is a serious injury. He is in hospital for an X-ray. It is either the collarbone or the shoulder itself,” Klopp said after Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat by Real Madrid in the final in Kiev. “It doesn’t look good. That’s it.” Salah, who scored 44 goals for Liverpool this season, came off just half an hour into the game in tears after hurting himself in a challenge with Sergio Ramos. Zidane place in pantheon of great coaches secure as Real win again

He was one of the all-time greats as a player, and Zinedine Zidane now merits consideration as one of the game’s great managers after making history with Real Madrid in Saturday’s Champions League final. His team’s 3-1 win over Liverpool on a dramatic evening in Kiev allowed Zidane to become the first coach ever to win the Champions League in three consecutive seasons, with Real becoming the first team to achieve that feat in more than 40 years. Less than two and a half years after being promoted from his position as coach of Real’s second team to his first managerial role at the highest level, the Frenchman has become only the third coach in the history of the game to lift the European Cup three times. Leaving behind contemporaries Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, Zidane has equalled former Liverpool manager Bob Paisley and Carlo Ancelotti, the man he used to serve as an assistant. “I need to congratulate the players as it is not at all easy what they are doing,” Zidane said after the game in the Ukrainian capital. “This is the business. There are no words for it. That is what this squad is all about. They have no limit to what they can do.” Zidane was reluctant to take too much of the credit after

seeing his side secure their fourth Champions League title in five seasons, and the 13th in the club’s long love affair with the European Cup. The 45-year-old also won the trophy as a player for Real, his volley in the 2002 win over Bayer Leverkusen in Glasgow being considered one of the best ever to grace a final -- although it was possibly surpassed by Gareth Bale’s overhead kick on Saturday. It is 20 years since the Marseille-born son of Algerian immigrants scored twice as France beat Brazil 3-0 in the 1998 World Cup final. Two years later his midfield artistry inspired France to victory at the European Championship, and on the eve of Saturday’s game Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp called him “one of the best five players of all time.” - ‘No secret’ -

Yet as a coach, he has now won nine trophies since replacing Rafael Benitez in the Santiago Bernabeu dugout in January 2016. It is a remarkable record, all the more so for a man who has not yet convinced everyone that he is a tactical genius. “What I am doing is just a continuation -- I have just started as a coach, what I am experiencing with my players is impressive,” he said.

“There is no secret. It is just a lot of work. We have players who are very good, but behind that there is lots of hard work. They have the desire, the hunger to win.” Having such a talented squad certainly helps. Zidane has also had a fair amount of luck on his side, with Liverpool’s night being marred by the first-half injury to Mohamed Salah that forced off their best player. Two goalkeeping errors by Loris Karius helped too, just as a howler by Bayern Munich’s Sven Ulreich had been vital in the semi-finals. Nevertheless, guiding Real to the longest period of sustained success in Europe’s elite club competition since the 1970s means, statistically at least, his place in the pantheon of great coaches is secure. The question is, where does he go from here? Zidane recently insisted that winning La Liga is harder than anything else, but his Real side finished well behind Barcelona in third place in the season just finished. As long as he has the motivation to carry on in his current role -- possibly outlasting the ageing Cristiano Ronaldo and building a new team -- he will try to wrestle back the domestic title from Barcelona. “We are not going to settle now for anything. You know that at the start of the season we always want to win everything.” (afp)

Real fans rejoice at Bernabeu after European success Tens of thousands of Real Madrid supporters erupted in delight at the club’s Santiago Bernabeu stadium after Saturday’s 3-1 Champions League final victory over Liverpool in Kiev. Familiar chants of “Campeones, campeones” rang out at the final whistle after Real fans flocked to the ground to watch the match which was broadcast on eight giant screens

at the Bernabeu. “We’re the best club in Europe, we’re the best club in the world, we’re the best club in history, we are Real Madrid!” shouted the stadium announcer, as the Spanish giants won a record-extending 13th European Cup. The club’s “decimotercera” moved them six titles clear

of second-placed AC Milan in the competition’s all-time honours list, after lifting the trophy for a remarkable fourth time in five seasons. Frenchman Zinedine Zidane also became the first coach to win three consecutive Champions League crowns, despite having spent less than three years at the helm. (afp)

point, but following the shock of the Egyptian’s injury they went on to lose due to a combination of two goalkeeping howlers by Loris Karius and a superb Gareth Bale goal. However, Klopp believed losing Salah was the turning point. “Of course it was a big moment in the game. I know if you say that after you lost it sounds like you’re a bad loser but for us it was like a harsh challenge. It was like wrestling. “The shock of the boys was obvious.” Salah later left the NSC Olimpiyskyi stadium with his arm in a sling, not stopping for waiting journalists. The official Twitter account of

the Egyptian team, @Pharaohs, posted a picture of Salah with the caption: “Get well soon @ MoSalah”. However, Klopp admitted that Salah now risks missing out on the World Cup -- he has been hoping to lead Egypt in their first appearance at the tournament since 1990, but their opening match is against Uruguay on June 15, less than three weeks from now. “We wanted everything and got nothing. We lost an important player and probably Egypt lost for the World Cup an important player. “From what I said so far it doesn’t look really good.” (afp)

‘I really feel for him’ -- Klopp agony as Karius howlers condemn Liverpool

Devastated Jurgen Klopp admitted he was shell-shocked by Loris Karius’s costly mistakes in Liverpool’s 3-1 Champions League final defeat against Real Madrid on Saturday. Liverpool goalkeeper Karius played a huge role in his side’s misery in Kiev as he gifted Madrid two goals. The 24-year-old handed Karim Benzema the opening goal when he threw the ball against the France forward and it rebounded into the net. Then, with Liverpool hoping to snatch a late equaliser, Karius let Gareth Bale’s long-range effort slip through his grasp and into the net.

Karius was in tears afer the final whistle, but tellingly not one of Liverpool’s shattered players went over to immediately console him. Only Madrid’s jubilant stars acknowledged the German’s angst before, still sobbing uncontrollably, he went toward Liverpool’s supporters to hold his hands up in an attempt to apologise for his blunders. While he wouldn’t publicly condemn Karius, Reds boss Klopp made it clear the difference in the match was the mistakes made by the man he signed from Mainz in 2016. “Yeah, what can I say? Loris

knows it, everybody knows it. It’s a shame, in a game like this and after a season like this. I really feel for him, he is a fantastic boy,” Klopp said. “The first one...I don’t know. The second one came because of the first one. “It is really difficult to get rid of bad thoughts in your mind in a game like this.” Aside from Karius’s woeful display, the other crucial turning point was the first half injury suffered by Mohamed Salah. The Liverpool forward was forced off after suffering a suspected dislocated shoulder in a challenge with Real defender Sergio Ramos. Klopp admitted the loss of Liverpool’s 44goal star was a huge blow to his team’s confidence. “The situation with Ramos and Mo was really bad a shock for the team. You could see that, Madrid immediately came up,” he said. Bale’s brilliant overhead kick had put Madrid 2-1 ahead as Klopp endured his sixth successive final defeat -- a painful run that includes losing the 2013 Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund against Bayern Munich. “Finals are for winning, nothing else. We started well, exactly like we wanted,” Klopp said. “But the Bale bicycle kick was unbelievable. The boys did their best, but it was not the best script for us tonight.” (afp)

(afp)

Trump and Kim raise summit hopes after days of brinkmanship

A ‘Repeal angel’ embraces another woman at Dublin Castle in Dublin on May 26, 2018 after the official result in the abortion referendum revealed a landslide decision in favour of repealing the constitutional ban on abortions.

(ant)

(kmb)

(kmb28)

Saving on Galungan, make preparation far in advance

(kmb24)
