nrique Ramirez remembers watching St. Jude Children’s Research E Hospital commercials on television with his wife and wondering how the hospital gets families to be featured in them.

Ramirez always thought as an outsider. He never imagined he would become one of those families. But in 2009, Ramirez’s 3-year-old daughter was diagnosed with atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor, a rare type of brain cancer that only appears about 38 times a year. At the time, the family had returned to the United States from Japan, where Ramirez, who was in the Navy, and his family had lived because of his work. They came back to a military hospital in San Antonio, where his daughter, Arianna, had her first brain surgery. The doctors there were not too optimistic and told him Arianna would not make it to her fourth birthday. So Ramirez and his wife started researching other options online. They found St. Jude. “Everywhere we looked online, the literature and the research led to St. Jude,” he said. “We

TMZ released a video in August about the incident. In it, the 12-year-old is hit against a wall and asphyxiated for almost 30 seconds. At some point, a school employee sees what is happening but does nothing. The attacker eventually tries to help the victim after the victim passes out and does not wake up soon.

On Wednesday morning, police raided two houses trying to find the other suspect, but they did not have luck. Second suspect remains at large.

Arianna passed away in March 2014. “But we got, if we count from diagnosis, about five years that we wouldn’t have got elsewhere – and we truly believe, had we not come to St. Jude, we wouldn’t have had those five years,” he said. “We look at that time as a very precious time, and we forever feel indebted to St. Jude for that time.” Today, Ramirez works at St. Jude in the patient engagement team of the fundraising and awareness organization for the hospital: American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities. “I absolutely love (working as a patient liaison) because I get to deal with families like mine,” he said. Ramirez believes it is important to raise awareness about childhood cancer because it is not as rare as people think. He said it is equally important to support organizations like St. Jude, where families do not pay for treatment, housing or food, so that parents can focus on helping their children. The one piece of advice Ramirez would give is the same one he received from a father who had just lost his son to cancer when Arianna relapsed: “Never mourn a living child.” “It … (didn’t) matter how sad or how crappy our situation was, the fact was that she was still there – and as long as she was there, we were going to do everything we … (could) to put a smile on her face,” he said. “That’s how we lived from the moment she relapsed. … We chose to live life to the fullest.” For more information about childhood cancer or St. Jude’s work, visit stjude.org.

The anniversary of Columbus’s first landing in the Americas is also observed in many Latin American countries where it’s known as Día de la Raza, Día de la Hispanidad, Día de la Resistencia Indígena, Day of Respect of Cultural Diversity and Día del Descubrimiento de America, among others. We’re weighing his imperfections, along with his contributions against our 21st century values. But we must also think about Columbus in the context of the world in the Age of Exploration. It’s considered an era of transition by historians, from the Middle Ages with its superstition, ignorance and social oppression to Early Renaissance, the onset of “great creative and intellectual activity.” Italian Americans are adamant about preserving Columbus Day. It serves as a “unifying factor” in the Italian-American community, Basil Russo, national president of the Order Italian Sons and Daughters of America told The New York Times in 2018. “Columbus Day is not a day … to honor an individual, but rather is a day … to recognize and honor a monumental historic event that began the process of over 500 years of worldwide immigration to America by oppressed people seeking a better life for their families,” Russo said. To understand Columbus’s importance to Italian Americans, he told The Times, it’s necessary to know how badly early Italian immigrants were treated. They endured religious, ethnic and cultural discrimination. They were viewed as culturally backward and inferior and vilified as sneaky, cowardly criminals. They were the victims of the largest mass lynching in U.S. history. On March 14, 1891, a mob of thousands of agitated men shot and mutilated 11 “hardworking religious” Italian Americans. This experience explains the significance of Columbus Day for Italian Americans, John Viola with the National Italian American Foundation wrote in an editorial in The New York Times in 2017. We believe Columbus “represents the values of discovery and risk that are at the heart of the American dream.”

But if you took the average car payment of $545 and invested it into a Roth IRA instead, 30 years later you’d be sitting on a cool $1.4 million. Look, I like my car, too—but not that much! For me, that’s motivation enough to save up and pay cash for a car instead of financing one. But I get plenty of objections to this way of thinking. Here are some of the excuses I hear. And the truth about them: 1. “But the 0% interest rate is a great deal!” No, it’s not. That new car starts losing value the instant you drive it off the lot. From the first month of ownership, you’d owe more on your car than it’s worth. Four years later, you’d still have a year or two of payments left, but your car would’ve lost most of its value. And let’s not forget that 0% is not the same as cash, and not everyone who falls for the 0% marketing pitch actually qualifies for the deal. But by then, you’re already in love with the car of your dreams and are willing to sign anything to drive it home. And of course, some of those “deals” aren’t quite as attractive once you read the fine print. Making money off car loans is their business. You’re not outsmarting anyone! 2. “I just had a baby, so I need a ‘safe’ car. . . like a new Tahoe.” This is one I hear all the time from people I know who have kids—especially new parents. Do babies take up more room? Yes. Do you want your baby to be safe in the car? Yes! But those things don’t equal a new SUV. Safe does not equal new. There are plenty of safe, pre-owned cars out there. And you shouldn’t let your desire to keep up with the Joneses drive your money habits and decisions. The Joneses are broke. Keeping up with broke people who are just trying to look rich is a really bad plan. 3. “How am I supposed to buy a car without a car loan?” Save up and pay cash for your cars. Yep, I mean it! All it takes is making the decision to pay yourself instead of the bank. If you have a car loan, go crazy and pay it off quickly. Or, sell it to get the process rolling to pay yourself instead of the bank. The first car you buy with cash might not be your dream car, but that’s okay. Just because

This may seem to make sense mathematically, but I realized a long time ago debt is not a mathematics problem—it’s a behavior problem. Personal finance is 80 percent behavior, and only 20 percent head knowledge. Besides, if all those people were so great at math, they wouldn’t be up to their eyeballs in debt in the first place! The reason the debt snowball pays off debt from smallest to largest is that modifying your behavior and providing inspiration to get out of debt is more important than the math. Your probability of becoming wealthy is more closely connected to your behavior than your financial “sophistication” or academic pedigree. When you pay off a small debt you experience success, and that gives you hope. Then, you move on the next debt. When you pay that one off, and you’ve wiped out two debts, it really energizes you. At that point you start to get excited, and you begin to believe in yourself and in the fact you’re actually on the road to becoming debt-free! — Dave

They naturally turn their head to the side when vomiting. Myth 2: Never wake a sleeping baby. Slightly jostling a baby when he or she is placed down is called the wake-and-sleep technique. It is the first step in helping babies develop the ability to drift back into sleep when a noise or hiccup accidentally rouses them in the middle of the night. Myth 3: Sleeping babies need complete quiet. The womb is loud, as loud as a vacuum cleaner, 24 hours a day. Many adults also sleep better with sound. We now know that a quiet room is weird to babies. The environment is too still, a bit like putting you in a silent, dark closet. Myth 4: Babies should not sleep in the parents’ room. Myth 5: It’s best to avoid high allergy foods until the first birthday when the baby’s body can handle them better. For a few decades, we recommended avoidance of allergenic foods such as eggs, peanuts or dairy for the first year. We even told nursing moms to avoid them to keep the foods from entering their breast milk. Now we know the opposite is true: Early introduction of these foods reduces the risk of serious allergy and delay actually increases the risk.

Now, new research published earlier this month in JAMA Internal Medicine offers an even more sobering message: Just two glasses per day of these drinks, whether they’re sweetened with sugar or artificial sweeteners, raises the risk of premature death by 17 percent, compared to those who sip them less than once a month. There are also other ingredients that may come into play. “Soft drinks are made up of carbonated water, and there is some preliminary research that suggests carbonated water may increase levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin, thereby making one hungrier, and that may lead to weight gain,” adds Nancy Farrell Allen, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and a registered dietician in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Bottom line: Indulge in these drinks once a month, or less. “We know now that added sugars can cause inflammation in bodies, and we already have a high sugar diet to begin with,” points out Erin Coates, a nutritionist at the Cleveland Clinic. One can of Coca-Cola, for example, contains 39 grams of added sugar, well above the American Heart Association’s maximum recommendations of 25 grams for women and 36 for men.

Fue un comentario ofensivo, arrogante y fuera de lugar, pero, quizás, totalmente cierto. Ese 26 de septiembre apenas habían pasado dos días desde que la presidenta de la Cámara de Representantes de Estados Unidos, Nancy Pelosi, anunció una investigación que podría culminar con la destitución de Trump a través de un juicio político. Pero en medio de acusaciones de que se trataba de una “cacería de brujas”, Trump coló esa frase que tanto dolió en México. “Quiero agradecer a México”, agregó Trump. “Tienen a 27.000 soldados en ello. Pero piensen en qué mal está eso —piénsenlo bien— que tenemos que usar a México porque los Demócratas no quieren arreglar nuestro defectuoso sistema migratorio”. Casi 400.000 personas han visto el video de la declaración de Trump que subí a mi cuenta de Twitter. A algunos les pareció una humillación el trato de Trump hacia México. Un amigo no le dice a otro que lo está usando. Y menos en público. Pero el presidente de México, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, no lo vio así. “No tengo ningún problema de conciencia”, dijo AMLO en su tradicional conferencia de prensa matutina . “No tenemos nada de qué avergonzarnos, se defiende la soberanía de México. Al mismo tiempo, no queremos confrontación”. La no confrontación y la total ausencia de AMLO en eventos internacionales son dos factores que están marcando la política exterior de México y su relación con Estados Unidos. Más concretamente: Estados Unidos dicta lo que quiere hacer y México casi siempre acepta. Es, sin duda, una relación desigual y amenazadora para los mexicanos. Trump advirtió que impondría aranceles si México no cooperaba en la cuestión migratoria. Quizás México no pagó por el muro de Trump, pero en la práctica se ha convertido en la policía migratoria de Trump. Y, lo que es peor, en el muro mismo. La cancillería mexicana anunció triunfalmente que el número de inmigrantes centroamericanos que han cruzado su territorio bajó un 56 por ciento entre mayo y agosto. ¿Por qué México fuerza a un hondureño o a un salvadoreño a quedarse en Matamoros o en Ciudad Juárez con toda su familia cuando en realidad quiere irse a Estados Unidos? La respuesta es clara y triste: porque eso es exactamente lo que el gobierno de Estados Unidos le ha pedido hacer a López Obrador. México se está quedando con decenas de miles de los inmigrantes que Trump no quiere. México es la nueva válvula de escape de Estados Unidos. managed to say something that hit a raw nerve. “I want to thank Mexico,” Mr. Trump continued. “Twenty-seven thousand soldiers they have. But think of how bad that is — think of it — where we use Mexico because the Democrats won’t fix our broken immigration system.” Almost 400,000 people have watched a video I posted on Twitter of Mr. Trump saying this. Some felt humiliated by the president’s statement. After all, a friend wouldn’t say to another friend that he’s using him, much less say it in public. But President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico (or AMLO, as he’s known) didn’t see it that way. “There’s nothing we should be ashamed of,” he said at a news conference. “We protect Mexico’s sovereignty. At the same time, we try to avoid confrontation.” A salient feature of Mexico’s current foreign policy is precisely AMLO’s reluctance to confront anyone outside of the country. In short, American officials say what they want, and Mexico — almost always — goes along with it. The relationship between the two nations is by no means an egalitarian one. In fact, it poses a threat to Mexico:

No sé de dónde sacó Trump la cifra de 27.000 soldados, pero posiblemente se refiera a los miembros de la Guardia Nacional de México dedicados a proteger la frontera con Guatemala y a evitar que personas crucen ilegalmente hacia Estados Unidos desde Centroamérica. Pero el origen y la misión de la Guardia Nacional nunca fue convertirse en los agentes migratorios de Estados Unidos en territorio mexicano. De hecho, la Guardia Nacional fue creada para reducir el crimen en México. Y hasta el momento, no ha dado resultados. Pero México no sólo está usando a la Guardia Nacional para detener a centroamericanos que cruzan el país sino que ha aceptado que Estados Unidos devuelva a su territorio a solicitantes de asilo político que esperan una respuesta de las autoridades estadounidenses. México, de pronto, se volvió en la sala de espera de Estados Unidos. El gobierno de Trump ha impuesto una presión enorme sobre la economía mexicana para conseguir lo que quiere. Y lo ha hecho en un momento en que los indicadores financieros presagian una recesión. Pero esta es una cuestión de soberanía, dignidad y respeto a los derechos humanos. Especialmente cuando se trata de proteger a personas que huyen de las pandillas, de la violencia y de la extrema pobreza. México nunca debe olvidar que durante décadas fue un país exportador de inmigrantes. tratados en Estados Unidos. Al final de cuentas, es cierto: Trump sí está usando a México. Y México, incomprensiblemente, se está dejando utilizar. Pero eso debe cambiar. ¿Qué puede hacer México? No ser el muro, no convertirse en la sala de espera y no actuar como la válvula de escape de Estados Unidos. México debe regresar a su digna e histórica tradición de proteger a los perseguidos y a los más vulnerables del planeta, desde los españoles que huyeron de la Guerra Civil hasta los centroamericanos que escapan del crimen, las pandillas y el hambre. Señor López Obrador, es un error apostar por Trump. Eso lo saben, sobre todo, sus examigos. ¿De verdad quiere asociarse y apoyar las políticas de un presidente que sugirió, según un reportaje de The New York Times, que sus agentes dispararan a las piernas a los inmigrantes en la frontera? ¿Dónde está la indignación y la protesta de México? Mr. Trump has previously warned that he would impose tariffs if Mexico didn’t back his immigration agenda. Mexico may not have paid for the president’s wall, but the country has, in effect, become Mr. Trump’s immigration police force. Mexico itself has become the wall. Recently the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico triumphantly announced a 56 percent decline in the number of Central American immigrants crossing Mexican territory between May and August. Why would Mexico force an entire family from Honduras or El Salvador to stay in Matamoros or Ciudad Juárez, if the United States is where they really want to go? The answer, sadly, is clear: Because that is exactly what the American government wants. Mexico is accepting tens of thousands of immigrants that Mr. Trump is refusing to take in. Mexico is now the United States’ safety valve. Mexico’s president “basically, has accepted all terms and conditions” set by the United States, Armando Santacruz, president of Mexico United Against Crime, told me in an interview. “Yes, we are the wall. And [Mexico’s] National Guard is now spending a lot if its resources keeping immigrants away.” I don’t know where Mr. Trump came up with the 27,000 soldiers figure. Perhaps he was referring to the number of National Guard (or Guardia Nacional) troops currently protecting the Mexican border with Guatemala as part of an effort to prevent Central Americans from entering the country en route to the United States. The National Guard was never meant to serve as an immigration agency for the United States. It was created to combat crime in Mexico — something it has failed to do thus far. But Mexico is not only using the National Guard to turn away Central Americans. It has also agreed to accept immigrants who are seeking asylum in the United States while their applications are being processed. The country is basically America’s waiting room. The Trump administration has placed great pressure on the Mexican economy to get what officials want, precisely at a time when financial indicators suggest a recession could be looming. Even so, we are talking about sovereignty, about dignity and basic respect for human rights, under circumstances where the safety of people fleeing gangs, violence and extreme poverty is at stake. Mexico should never forget that for decades it was an “immigrant exporter.” Now it must treat Central Americans with the same care and respect it has always demanded for Mexicans living in the United States. It’s true: President Trump is using Mexico. And, against all logic, Mexico is letting him get away with it. This has to change. What can Mexico do? It must refuse to be Mr. Trump’s wall, to be the United States’waiting room and safety valve. Mexico must re-embrace its honorable tradition of protecting the persecuted and most vulnerable, whether they’re fleeing civil war in Spain or crime and hunger in Central America. To President López Obrador, I say this: It is a mistake to place bets on Mr. Trump. This is something all his former friends have learned the hard way. Do you really want to be associated with the policies of a president who, according to a recent report in The New York Times, suggested shooting migrants at the border in the legs? Why haven’t Mexicans taken to the streets in outraged protest? Mr. Trump is on the wrong side of history. When he finally leaves office, his accomplices and partners, inside and outside the United States, will be judged harshly for their misdeeds. There is still time to do the right thing.

Back in 2013, Kansas City, Missouri’s City Council approved an ordinance that could fine parents of bullies with up to $1,000. But before getting to fines, parents get warnings and could avoid the fine if their kids attend an anti-bullying education diversion program. According to the U.S. Department of Education, about 20 percent of students ages 12-18 experience bullying at school each year.

Willis se desempeñó en múltiples puestos en el distrito, incluso como maestro de primaria, administrador y presidente de la junta escolar. Construida para reemplazar las escuelas intermedias Coronado y West, la Escuela Intermedia Gloria Willis presenta un espacio diseñado para el aprendizaje creativo, anfiteatros de grupos pequeños en cada piso para debates y presentaciones formales, y un espacio de actuación flexible con asientos ajustables. Atlanta está considerada como uno de los centros de negocios más importantes de todo EE.UU. Es sede del 75% de las empresas que pertenecen al “Fortune 1,000”. Debido a esto es que cuenta con un PIB que lo posiciona en la 8va posición en el país y la 15va posición en el mundo. Los vuelos de Kansas a Atlanta tienen un costo promedio de $180, siendo así unos de los más económicos que hemos presentado hasta ahora, y contando una gran cantidad de ellos con vuelos directos.
