Una nativa del barrio de Westside de Kansas City, Missouri está apoyando artistas latinos e hispanos del área.

Esa persona es Jenny Méndez, directora de artes culturales de Mattie Rhodes. Ha trabajado por más de dos décadas apoyando a los artistas del área.

“Mi trabajo, en realidad, es sólo conectarme con las personas (familias, artistas y la comunidad) y poder compartir mis experiencias y compartir recursos y poder darles ese espacio y permitirles crear y sentirse orgullosos del trabajo que están haciendo”, dijo.

Méndez comenzó como instructor de artes hace 26 años. Rápidamente se abrió camino hasta su posición actual.

“Cuando comencé a trabajar aquí, sabía que (el centro de artes) era (no sólo) una parte importante de la historia aquí en el Westside, sino también un lugar donde los niños podían venir y ser ellos mismos y hacer cosas realmente geniales”, dijo.

Anative of Kansas City, Missouri’s Westside neighborhood is supporting area Hispanic and Latino artists.

That person is Jenny Mendez, Mattie Rhodes cultural arts director. Mendez has worked for more than two decades to support area artists.

“My job, really, is just to connect with people — families, artists and community — and being able to share my experiences and share resources and being able to give them that space and allow them to create and feel proud about the work that they’re doing,” she said.

Mendez started as an arts instructor 26 years ago. She quickly worked her way into her current position.

“When I started working here, I knew (the arts center) was (not only) an important piece of history here on the Westside but also just a place where

They want to know who the other internal applicants were and in what ways the two out-of-towners beat them out. There is, reportedly, grumbling inside the KCPD ranks.

And now, Ryan McCarty, a former attorney for the KCPD has made troubling allegations in an eight-page letter critical of interim police chief, Joseph Mabin and the department’s chief attorney, Holly Dodge. He sent the letter in which he called for them to be fired to 100-plus city, county and state officials; news outlets; and the U.S. Department of Justice, which is already investigating the department.

“Soy afortunada de haber estado en este papel y de poder ser la voz de los artistas”, dijo.

“The arts center has been a staple here on the Westside over 50 years, and lots of children and lots of parents who now have their own children want to make sure that their kids have the same experience, and now even grandparents want that,” she said.

Mendez works to continue providing those quality programs to the community. Earlier this year, Mattie Rhodes opened a new building with a gallery and space for workshops, classes and community events. For Mendez, this new space means an improvement in the services the center provides. The gallery in particular offers an incredible opportunity to support artists at any stage of the artmaking process.

“My goal is to give a venue to Hispanic or Latino artists to be able to exhibit their works but also invite any other artists to be able to show and exhibit their works and artists of all levels,” she said.

Mendez loves her work, she said. She credits that to the ability to expand the facilities.

“I’m fortunate that I’ve been in this role and (in) being able to be the voice of artists,” she said.

He told KCUR on Monday’s Up to Date that he doesn’t believe the board should be making such a decision just four days after holding a single public hearing.

“On what basis will we pick that chief? Nobody knows,” he said. “Who did we speak to? What references did we check? Nobody will know.” Lucas also pointed out that the board hasn’t sought “feedback … from actual rank and file officers.”

No estamos pidiendo un favor. Estamos luchando por nuestros derechos. Sabemos que estamos en una dictadura”.

El modelo a seguir en Venezuela puede ser la Nicaragua de 1990, cuando los sandinistas perdieron las elecciones frente a una coalición liderada por Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, o el Chile de 1988, con la celebración de un plebiscito que posibilitó la salida del poder del dictador Augusto Pinochet.

Los venezolanos podrían sacar con votos a Maduro del Palacio de Miraflores. Pero no se le puede permitir a su gobierno organizar las elecciones ni contar los votos. Eso ya pasó en las elecciones de 2013 y 2018, ambas marcadas por denuncias de fraude. Por lo tanto, es necesario que las elecciones presidenciales de 2024 sean supervisadas por organismos internacionales. Y aun así sería muy difícil prevenir que la dictadura use recursos públicos para impulsar la reelección de

Según el centro, no hay costo y el estudio ayudará a los propietarios a comprender mejor a sus mascotas.

To participate in the study, Pet Resource Center clients who have appointments in December are asked to bring a poo sample from their pet that’s less than four hours old in a bag and hand it to the staff. According to the center, there’s no cost and the study will help owners better understanding their pets.

Qué esta pasando Los hospitales de toda la región están experimentando un mayor número de hospitalizaciones por gripe y RSV de lo esperado para esta época del año. In addition to RSV and flu, the UGPHD reminds everyone that COVID still presents a risk in our community, and COVID infections are expected to surge this winter. The good news is that you can get both your annual flu vaccination and an updated COVID booster shot at the same time.

The best way to prevent serious illness, hospitalization or death from flu and COVID-19 is to get vaccinated. Vaccines for both flu and COVID-19 are available for most people ages 6 months and older^. Updated COVID boosters available for eligible people ages 5 years and older.

Free flu and COVID vaccinations and updated booster updated shots are available for free at the UGPHD clinic, located at 619 Ann Ave, Kansas City, KS, 66101.

Take Precautions

What’s Happening Hospitals throughout the region are seeing higher numbers of flu and RSV hospitalizations than expected for this time of year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced last week that hospitalizations for the flu in the U.S. are at a decade high for this time of year.

This means longer wait times at medical facilities, crowded emergency rooms and healthcare staff and resources stretched too thin. Healthcare experts warn that children, including infants, are being hit especially hard by respiratory illnesses.

This year the UG celebrated the 25th anniversary of consolidation. During today’s ceremony special recognition was shown to the longest serving UG volunteer, Ms. Wonderous Burns. With 25 years of service, Ms. Burns is a true testament of hard work and selfless commitment. Ms. Burns was the very first volunteer under Mayor Carol Marinovich. Before coming to volunteer with the UG, she volunteered for many years with Governor Cuomo’s office in New York.

“For some people, volunteering is about just showing up, but for our volunteers it is a conscious dedicated decision to give their heart and commitment each day to serve our community,” said Human Resources Director, Renee Ramirez. “I am beyond grateful for the hard work, sincere passion, and the knowledge that our volunteers bring to the UG each year.

On behalf of all the employees of the Unified Government, we thank our volunteers for continuing to have the heart to share their time with us.”

This year volunteers received individual recognition certificates along with UG volunteer swag and the opportunity to directly engage with Mayor Tyrone Garner, Interim County Administrator Cheryl Harrison-Lee and other UG leadership.

Una adolescente mexicana se ha convertido en la persona más joven en graduarse de un posgrado en la Universidad de Harvard.

A los 18 años, Dafne Almazán Anaya concluyó recientemente su maestría en matemáticas para la docencia.

“Con las estrategias diseñadas en Harvard estoy cumpliendo uno de mis principales objetivos: empezar a revertir la barrera educativa en (México) en materia de matemáticas, especialmente con aquellos niños con mayor coeficiente intelectual”, dijo Almazán en entrevista con el portal web ViveUSA.

La pandemia del COVID-19 interrumpió las clases presenciales de Almazán, por lo que concluyó el curso de forma remota.

Esta no es la primera vez que Almazán hace historia. Cuando tenía 13 años, fue noticia al convertirse en la psicóloga más joven de la historia después de graduarse en psicología del Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey.

En ese entonces, Almazán dijo que esperaba usar su título para ayudar a otros niños superdotados que a veces luchan contra la baja autoestima, según Remezcla.

“Creo que todo el mundo tiene algún tipo de talento. Lo más importante es encontrarlo, explotarlo y usarlo para seguir creciendo”, dijo al diario El Universal. “Además esforzarte, estudiar y agradecer el apoyo de todos los que te rodean, tu familia, amigos, profesores. Todo es trabajo en equipo”.

La experiencia académica de Almazán va más allá de ser la mujer más joven en concluir una maestría en Harvard con solo 18 años y su título de psicología. Habla inglés, francés, chino, latín y español, tiene una maestría en educación del Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, es licenciada en derecho en la Universidad Latinoamericana y está cursando un doctorad en educación.

“With the strategies designed at Harvard, I’m fulfilling one of my main goals: to start reverting the educational barrier in (Mexico) regarding math, especially with those kids with higher IQs,” Almazan said during an interview with the web portal ViveUSA.

The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted Almazan’s in-person classes, so she concluded the course remotely.

This isn’t the first time Almazan has made history. When she was 13, she made the news by becoming the youngest-ever psychologist after graduating with a degree in psychology from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Studies.

Back then, Almazan said she was hoping to use her degree to help other gifted children who sometimes struggle with low self-esteem, according to Remezcla.

“I think that everyone has some kind of talent. The most important thing is to find it, exploit it and use it to keep growing,” she told the newspaper El Universal. “Moreover, making efforts, studying and acknowledging the support from all those around you – your family, friends, teachers. It’s all teamwork.”

Almazan’s academic experience goes beyond being the youngest woman to conclude a master’s degree at Harvard at only 18 and her psychology degree. She speaks English, French, Chinese, Latin and Spanish, has a master’s degree in education from the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, is a law major at the Latin American University and is pursuing a Ph.D. in education.

By scoring on their first four possessions and getting a pick six, courtesy of linebacker Willie Gay’s 47-yard interception return, the Chiefs built a 27-0 lead during the first 25 minutes, 28 seconds. But then, Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes II threw back-to-back interceptions, leading to backto-back second-quarter TD passes from Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson to wide receiver Jerry Jeudy – an 18-yarder with 1:35 left and a 5-yarder with 9 seconds left. Brandon McManus provided the extra-point kick for both touchdowns to help cut Kansas City’s lead to 27-14 at halftime.

“Everybody had a choice on how they wanted to continue that game. … I’m so impressed with all those guys – defense, offense, special teams,” Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett told reporters. “They didn’t blink. They stayed together.”

The Chiefs answered with a late third quarter TD pass from Mahomes to wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, gave up an early fourth-quarter TD pass from backup quarterback Brett Rypien to Jeudy and held on for the six-point AFC West Division victory.

Denver’s ill-fated comeback attempt drew praise from Chiefs coach Andy Reid.

“Those guys never gave up (when they were) down 27-0. … It’s a tribute to the offense and defense playing hard,” Reid told reporters to open his postgame press conference. “Second quarterback comes in and they still continue to play hard.”

Reid also praised his own players, including tight end Travis Kelce for surpassing 10,000 career receiving yards and posting his seventh straight 1,000-yard receiving season. His opening remarks included some sympathetic words for Mahomes, who finished with three TD passes and three interceptions, and 342 net yards passing (352 gross).

“Every quarterback that has played in this league a while has a game like that,” Reid said.

Mahomes called his three interceptions “three bad decisions.”

“Luckily for me, the rest of the team stepped up,” he said.

Mahomes and the rest of his team will see if they can step up and clinch their seventh straight AFC West title – and an AFC playoff berth – by defeating Houston this Sunday (Dec. 18) at NRG Stadium. The Chiefs are 10-3 overall. The Texans are 1-11-1.
