He tenido oportunidades y privilegios que aprecio enormemente. Mis hijos nacieron aquí y sus vidas —espero, como muchas otras personas que emigran— será mucho mejor que la mía. Tengo una modern family cariñosa, divertida y maravillosa.

Y, aun así, extraño tanto a México.

El inmigrante sufre de soledad y lejanía. Siempre está pensando en volver,

algo que te atraiga a otro sitio, pero siempre es difícil dejar la casa, la familia, los olores y rincones propios del lugar en el que naciste. En mi caso, me fui de México por censura. En el país dominaba el PRI, el omnipresente partido que llevaba entonces más de medio siglo en el poder. Había hecho un reportaje en el que hablaba, entre otras cosas, de cómo los presidentes se elegían a dedazo, y en la televisora donde trabajaba no lo quisieron pasar. Entonces nadie me conocía y a nadie le importaba. Pero yo no quería ser un periodista censurado. Así que renuncié. “Quemé las naves”, le dije a mi mamá, entre asustado y orgulloso. Vendí un vochito rojo destartalado y saqué los pequeños ahorros que tenía. Había conseguido una visa para ir a la Universidad de California, que ofrecía un programa certificado en periodismo y televisión. Ese era mi escape y mi excusa. En realidad, creo que sólo necesitaba tiempo para saber qué hacer. Ese primer año comí mucho pan y lechuga. Pero me sentía arropado por un país donde los periodistas podían decir verdades incómodas sin temor a represalias. Compré un pequeño televisor en blanco y negro —la pantalla medía dos puños de mi mano— y empecé a aprender de la comunidad latina y a sentirme parte de ella. En ese entonces recién nos habían bautizado como “hispanos” y éramos apenas unos 15 millones. Hoy somos más de 62 millones. Y mi carrera periodística en este país ha estado enfocada justo en esta comunidad que he visto crecer.

Un año después de mi llegada, y tras terminar mi curso, conseguí un puesto como reportero en el Canal 34 de Los Ángeles. Pete Moraga, el director de noticias, fue mi ángel: me dio mi primer trabajo y me invitó a su casa para mi primera cena del Día de Acción de Gracias. Después, llegó Miami. Era 1986 y decidí irme con lo que hoy es la cadena Univision. Al poco tiempo, luego de una crisis interna, comencé mis días como conductor titular de su noticiero. Tenía 28 años, nunca había entrevistado a un presidente, no había cubierto una guerra y ni yo me entendía en inglés. Pero Univision se convirtió en mi segunda casa, fue entonces que aprendí a cuestionar al poder y a hacer periodismo sobre la marcha. Hoy, con un par de chambitas más, sigo en el mismo puesto. En estos años he cubierto conflictos internacionales, he ido a lugares donde se hace historia y he podido entrevistar a sus protagonistas. Ejercer esta profesión —intensa, ardua— me ha hecho ver lo indispensable que es para una democracia: es un contrapeso esencial. Cuando llegué a este país, su sistema democrático llevaba operando por más de dos siglos (entonces, Ronald Reagan era presidente). El México que había dejado atrás era muy distinto: autoritario, fraudulento y corrupto. Así que recuerdo lo maravilloso que fue experimentar la apertura a la crítica y disenso. Quizás por eso, al menos en los años ochenta, jamás imaginé que, casi cuatro décadas después, un multimillonario mentiroso y ególatra llamado Donald Trump haría tambalear ese sistema al no reconocer los resultados de una elección presidencial. Pero incluso entonces, el periodismo se mantuvo independiente y riguroso.

Eso se mide, me parece, en la representación. Hay una latina en la Corte Suprema de Justicia (la jueza Sonia Sotomayor), un latino en la Estación Espacial Internacional (el astronauta de origen salvadoreño Frank Rubio), nos reconocemos en los nuevos héroes que vemos en las pantallas (como Cassian Andor y Namor, interpretados por los actores mexicanos Diego Luna y Tenoch Huerta) y tenemos un histórico número de miembros hispanos en el Congreso. “Hemos visto el futuro, y el futuro es nuestro”, dijo César Chávez.

Hay días en que pienso sobre cómo habría sido mi vida en México, uno de los países más peligrosos del mundo para los periodistas. Sospecho que habría sido muy distinta. Lo que sí estoy seguro es que la decisión más valiente y trascendental de mi vida fue convertirme en inmigrante.

Por eso estoy aquí 40 años después. Porque lo arriesgué todo. Y hoy ya no conozco otra manera de vivir.

Siete meses después de prestar juramento como alcalde número 55 de Kansas City, Quinton Lucas se convirtió en el segundo alcalde en la historia de Kansas City en enfrentar una pandemia global. Miró las lecciones aprendidas antes y las vidas perdidas y resolvió que lo mismo no sucedería bajo su supervisión. Su mayor aprendizaje de la pandemia de 1918 fue enfrentar el desafío.

“Pensé que era importante que Kansas City fuera agresivo”, dijo Lucas. “El objetivo fundamental era salvar vidas”.

Seven months after being sworn in as the 55th mayor of Kansas City, Quinton Lucas became only the second mayor in KC history to face a global pandemic. He looked to lessons learned before and lives lost and resolved “not on my watch.” His biggest takeaway from the 1918 pandemic was to meet the challenge.

“I thought it important for Kansas City to be aggressive,” Lucas said. “The fundamental goal was to save lives.”

He consulted the city’s top health official in 2020 and met with area mayors and business and school leaders. On March 24, Lucas imposed a stay-at-home order.

“I believe our steps saved lives. Our early intervention limited the spread of Covid at the beginning when it was its most deadly,” Lucas told Dos Mundos.

His only regret was not getting up-to-date messaging to all areas faster.

The mayor intends to seek a second term. He’s proud of what’s been accomplished. Thousands of lane miles of road have been resurfaced, he said. Thousands of units of affordable housing were created. City workers received pay raises. Salaries for police officers increased. Millions of dollars were spent on housing and homelessness solutions. Thousands of people were moved into homes, “even in the darkest days of Covid.”

“I’m proudest of our investment in housing. As a kid who grew up knowing homelessness, I’m proud we’re fighting so that no child in Kansas City will wonder where he’s sleeping tonight. And I’m proud of improving more roads and infrastructure than any (KC) mayor in history by this time in their term,” he said, adding, “We have a lot of work left to do.”

Lucas cited stabilizing older neighborhoods, such as the Northeast and Westside while keeping it affordable for people who’ve been there for generations. More police are needed on the street to help curb violence. Lucas is determined to reduce “the unconscionable rate of homicide and violent crime” because the city’s future depends on it. Also on his to-do list: attracting more companies and good paying jobs.

Since Lucas took office, KC has invested in intervention specialists, social workers and outreach in schools in communities most impacted by violence to “break the generational cycle of violence.” The city council passed an ordinance to get guns out of the hands of domestic abusers.

“We’ve taken important steps but clearly not enough,” Lucas said. “I want to inspire our young people to pick up books, not guns and to find jobs, not conflict.”

A KC booster, Lucas claims bragging rights for “one of the most exciting cities to be part of.”

The new terminal at Kansas City International Airport will open on time and on budget. And the city won the bid to host the 2026 World Cup.

“It took a lot of work,” Lucas said, “and we have a lot of work to do, but it will be a lot of fun. Kansas City is booming.”

Asked what his plans are once his tenure as mayor ends, Lucas said, “I’m proud to have this job. I worked very hard to do a good job, and I’ll work hard to keep it and not worry about what’s next.”

The Hispanic Development Fund (HDF) has set Feb. 1 as its deadline for accepting scholarship applications for the 2023-24 school year.

As the HDF’s website states, applicants must be of Hispanic heritage and be graduating or have graduated from a Kansas City area high school, or be obtaining or have obtained, a general equivalency diploma from an area organization. Other requirements include attendance at an area high school for three years prior to graduation, enrollment as a full-time student and acceptance or enrollment in a fully accredited college or university.

As the website also states, several Missouri and Kansas higher education institutions support the HDF’s mission by matching the scholarship amounts students receive. They include Avila University, Kansas State University, the University of Kansas, the University of Central Missouri, Rockhurst University, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, William Jewell College, the Kansas City Art Institute, Truman State University and Pittsburg (Kan.) State University.

Being a mentor involves a great deal of responsibility, but it also brings great satisfaction.

Although mentoring styles vary by person, there are essential qualities that any mentor should have. Some of those qualities include the following:

*Commitment: Being a mentor means being committed to the life of the person you’re mentoring. At times, being committed to your mentee will involve advocating for your mentee. Part of your commitment also entails actively participating in providing growth opportunities for the person you are supporting.

*Honesty: All people benefit from welltargeted feedback. To be a good mentor, you often must offer honest feedback. It’s important, however, that you offer constructive criticism. Doing so will help the mentee grow while forcing your mentee to step out of his or her comfort zone.

*Humility: Being a good mentor doesn’t mean you have to know everything about your profession. It’s important to consider that you can learn from everyone, including your mentee. Recognize your limitations and be honest when something is outside your area of expertise.

*Strategic: It’s crucial to be prepared to anticipate how to help a mentee. Establishing a plan together is the best way to guide the mentee toward measurable and achievable goals. Reflect on the mentee’s goals and prepare strategic actions to increase your mentee’s chances of success.

*Empathy: Being empathetic is essential to guiding your mentee effectively. Put yourself in your mentee’s shoes. Remember, your mentee is at a different stage of development than you and the context of your mentee’s training might differ from what you experienced.
