l presidente Trump llevó a cabo su campaña electoral prometiendo grandes cambios al sistema de inmigración de Estados Unidos. Y desde que asumió la presidencia, muchas de las acciones que ha tomado su administración han hecho que un sistema ya roto sea aún peor.

However, little has been done to it, as the Trump administration failed to make decisions in time to impact it for 2018. Instead of making the changes intended in a timely and legal manner, the Trump administration opted for interpreting the existing laws and regulations differently instead.

This summer, employers across the nation started noticing an unusually large number of H-1B applications were being denied. In fact, cases that would’ve been approved without questioning in years prior were being scrutinized.

One way the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services scrutinizes cases is by requesting further evidence (RFE). The number of RFEs is up 44 percent from 2016. Additionally, because of the uncertainty in the ways the cases are being treated, the number

Macias, a Texas native raised in Kansas City, Kan.’s Argentine and Kansas City, Mo.’s Westside neighborhoods, developed that philosophy partly from his military experience. Joining the Navy in 1985 through the delayed entry program after finishing high school, he served for 21 years and in two wars.

“I served primarily on the East Coast, but traveled to 22 countries around the world,” Macias said. “My last overseas assignment was at Naval Air Station Sigonella (Sicily). My last stateside assignment was with Explosive Ordnance Disposal Training and Evaluation Unit (No.) 2 in Fort Story, Va.” During his years in the Navy, there were two important moments that stood out for Macias.

One was when he was on the USS Roosevelt, returning from his first war. The ship came under the threat of attack by Iraqi MiGs. U.S. Air Force jets got the MiGs before they could fire on the ship.

Talking to TV reporter Michael Mahoney, Kansas City Mayor Sly James said the landslide victory demonstrated that city residents “were much more in tune” with the need for renovations than city officials had thought they were – and it showed what could be achieved “when we have everybody in the city pulling together for a common cause.”

The victory also might’ve resulted from a shift in the local debate from whether KCI should be revamped or not to what changes should be made, Mahoney suggested during his interview with James for KMBC-TV (Channel 9). James felt that Kansas City, Mo.-based company Burns & McDonnell played a key role in shifting the focus.

“They brought forth a plan that had never been considered before – and I think that we need to remember that,” the mayor said. “They came forward when nobody else did.”

As local news agencies have reported, however, Burns & McDonnell wasn’t the company that received the city contract to develop the three-terminal airport into a one-terminal facility. Edgemoor Infrastructure & Real Estate, a Bethesda, Md.-based company, has been awarded that contract.

Another significant moment was the day Macias retired from the Navy. He recalled receiving letters of appreciation from U.S. presidents and congressman, and members of the Kansas City Council.

“I had served for 21 years and felt like I had accomplished a lot,” he said. “So it was time to retire and let the younger sailors become the leaders.”

For Macias, being part of the Navy was a great experience.

It provided many benefits, including tuition payment, a home loan certificate and veterans’ preference for government jobs. Those benefits also included serving his country and wearing the uniform.

The Navy provided its share of difficulties, too. Macias said he lives with post-traumatic stress disorder from the second war in which he fought. In addition, he heard nicknames such as “Muchachos,” “Chachimo” and “Chach.”

They never bothered him, he said.

“I would recommend that the young people wanting to join the military do so knowing that they should expect to be sent to a combat zone at a minimum of two times over a 20-year career, possibly three or four times,” Macias said.

Macias has tried to live life to the fullest outside of the Navy. He has a bachelor’s degree in education and master’s degree in business administration. He’s working on his dissertation for his doctorate in business administration. In addition, he’s the director of LULAC National Educational Service Centers Inc., an educational non-profit organization.

eterans Day is the modern iteration of Armistice Day, instituted in November 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I a year earlier and reflect on “the heroism of those who died in the country’s service.”

In 1938, Congress enshrined Nov. 11 as a federal holiday “to honor veterans of World War I.” Then, President Eisenhower and the 83rd Congress rebranded the holiday Veterans Day in 1954 “to honor American veterans of all wars.”

It’s observed with parades and programs commemorating veterans and active duty military service members. Observances locally include exhibitions, public ceremonies, community celebrations, free meals, discounted admissions and concerts. Art and artifacts dedicated to the World War I era and the present veterans’ suicide epidemic will be on display in four special exhibits at the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial, which will present its annual Veterans Day ceremonies.

From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., veterans and active duty military are invited to a complimentary breakfast at the Tony Aguirre Community Center on Kansas City’s Westside. Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City is offering complimentary buffet lunch for veterans and active duty military personnel. And anyone with U.S. military identification can get a free meal at Up Dog in Independence, Mo. on Veterans Day. From Nov. 10-12, the World War I Museum is waiving admission for veterans and active duty military and reducing by half, general public admission prices.

The North Kansas City Middle School Honor Orchestra will perform a Veterans Day concert at the Kansas City, Mo., Public Library Central branch on Nov. 12.

It’s worth remembering and honoring the service of our military not only on Veterans Day but every day. They deserve the wellintentioned homage. They’ve also earned and are entitled to timely access to veteran services and prompt, quality medical care.

Progress has been made in the Veterans Administration since widescale problems that cost veterans their lives came to light in 2014.

But recent news stories stare down Veterans Day sanctimony and reform complacency.

Last month, USA Today revealed that “for years, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs concealed mistakes and misdeeds by staff members entrusted with caring for veterans.”

On Oct. 30, Scott Davis, a VA whistleblower published an open letter to President Trump on the current state of affairs inside the VA. Davis cited thousands of “abandoned” calls to the Veterans Crisis Hotline; 800,000 veterans in a pending backlog; veterans with critical illnesses being denied care; and much more.

And within the past week, complaints of abuse, neglect and improper care at the St. Louis Veterans Home have surfaced. Veterans and their families and employees want an independent investigation at the state-run nursing facility that houses up to 300 veterans and top administrators replaced. A Nov. 1 article in the St. Louis Post Dispatch about the “shocking” abuse, mistreatment and neglect was headlined, “Families to Gov. Greitens: Help us, our veterans are dying.”

One of Trump’s goals is to end the “chain migration” system into the United States and start a merit-based system. His effort isn’t the first attempt to eliminate the diversity lottery program. Several conservatives also have tried to terminate it, with no success.

Trump’s decision was reportedly made after the terrorist attack on Oct. 31 in New York City, where eight people died.

Puerto Rico Rises Up Puerto Rico Se Levanta

AN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Hay veces en las que lo mejor de un país surge en los momentos más difíciles. Y no dudo en llamar a Puerto Rico un país — con su propia historia, cultura y lengua a pesar de ser una colonia de Estados Unidos — y en reconocer que está viviendo uno de los momentos más angustiantes y definitorios de su historia moderna. Sin embargo, unos días aquí me convencieron de que esta isla va a salir adelante y de que, aunque hoy parezca imposible, las cosas quizás serán incluso mejores que antes del huracán María.

El 70% de la isla todavía no tiene energía eléctrica.

Durante tres días no encontré un solo semáforo que funcionara. Las noches son profundamente negras y el ronroneo de los generadores se pelea con el canto de los coquíes. Pero algo pasa cuando no hay luz, internet ni señal de celular. Por principio, la gente habla más entre sí.

En San Juan, el bar El Local se transformó de pronto en un centro comunitario. Jóvenes con los tatuajes más coloridos que he visto se cocinan ahí el desayuno, la comida y la cena desde hace casi seis semanas. Cada quien trae lo poco que tiene y lo comparte con los demás. En medio del caos y las carencias, este grupo ha encontrado una especie de felicidad.

Vi una imagen similar en lo que era un club de playa y que se ha transformado en la cocina central de un inusual movimiento social y gastronómico. El chef José Andrés juntó a unos 60 chefs de toda la isla y, a través de su fundación World Central Kitchen, han preparado y distribuido más de 2 millones de comidas para los más necesitados.

El día que visité la cocina vi un mar de miles de panes con jamón (y mucha mayonesa) y a decenas de voluntarios preparando sándwiches. “Hazlos como si fueran para ti” es su mantra. A un lado, uno de los cocineros condimentaba una gigantesca olla con pollo antes de mezclarla con arroz amarillo. Una hora después, a bordo de un “food truck”, me tocó ver cómo esa comida se repartía a niños y mujeres de Loíza, una de las comunidades más golpeadas por los huracanes. Sólo ese día repartieron 148 mil comidas que llegaron a los lugares más apartados de la isla. Es imposible perder la esperanza cuando eres testigo de algo así.

Mi impresión es que en Puerto Rico nadie descansa. Me reuní con los dos líderes principales de la isla, el gobernador, Ricardo Roselló, y la alcaldesa de San Juan, Carmen Yulín Cruz. Tienen estilos muy diferentes y no me atrevo a criticarlos porque pocas veces en mi vida he visto a dos políticos trabajar más duro.

Roselló es un joven académico de 38 años de edad. Este es su primer puesto político, y le ha tocado lidiar con el peor desastre natural en la historia moderna de la isla, con un prepotente presidente Donald Trump que se aplaude solito

AN JUAN, Puerto Rico — There are times when a country’s best qualities shine during its most difficult tests. And I hesitate neither to call Puerto Rico a country — it has preserved its history, culture and language despite being a U.S. territory — nor to acknowledge that the island is going through one of the most agonizing and decisive periods in its modern history.

A few days in Puerto Rico have convinced me that its people are rising to the challenge, and they will indeed move beyond the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria. And though today

it may seem impossible, things may become even better than before.

Seventy percent of the island still lacks reliable electricity. For three days, I couldn’t find a traffic light that worked. Nights are extremely dark, and the purring of gas-powered generators competes with the singing of Puerto Rico’s coquí frogs. But something happens when there is no power, no internet and no cellphone service.

People talk to each other more.

For instance, El Local, a bar in San Juan, has been transformed into a community center.

Young people with the most colorful tattoos I’ve ever seen have been cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner there for almost six weeks now. People bring in the little they have to offer and share it with others. Amid the chaos

and the shortages, the group has found some happiness, and a sense of unity.

I saw the same thing at a former beach club that has become the center of a unique social and gastronomic movement. The renowned Spanish-American chef José Andrés gathered dozens of chefs from across the island, and through his World Central Kitchen organization, they have prepared and distributed over 2 million meals to those most in need.

The day I visited the kitchen I came across dozens of volunteers assembling sandwiches — a sea of slices of bread and ham (and lots of mayonnaise). The group’s motto: “Make them as though they were for you.” Nearby, one of the cooks was seasoning a huge pot of chicken before mixing in yellow rice. An hour later, I boarded a food truck and saw all that food distributed to women and children in Loiza, one of the communities most affected by the hurricane.

On that day, 148,000 meals were prepared and delivered, even to the most remote areas of the island. It is impossible to lose hope when you witness an endeavor like this.

I also got the sense that nobody really rests in Puerto Rico these days. During my visit, I met with Gov. Ricardo A. Rosselló and the mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulín Cruz. I’ve never seen two politicians working harder in my life.

Roselló is a 38-year-old scholar. This is the first time he has held political office, and not only does he have to deal with the worst natural disaster in Puerto Rico’s modern history and a huge $70 billion national debt, he also has to cope with an arrogant U.S. president who pats himself on the back for offering delayed and underwhelming aid in the aftermath of the hurricane.

Yulín is a warrior who has been working nonstop since the hurricane hit, and sleeping on a mattress in a tiny corner of the main relief collection center in San Juan. She has relentlessly criticized President Donald Trump and has become the rebel voice of Puerto Ricans.

Both Roselló and Yulín complain about how unfairly Puerto Ricans have been treated. And they are right. Trump never nonchalantly lobbed rolls of paper towels into a crowd of hurricane victims in Texas or Florida, though he did so in Puerto Rico. And though Puerto Ricans have a representative in Congress, she cannot vote on any bill, even if it is related to the island. Puerto Ricans cannot vote in presidential elections unless they establish residency in one of the 50 states.

Hurricane Maria has proved that having an American passport is no guarantee that you will be treated like an American citizen. I doubt that Trump’s abuse and his disrespect toward Puerto Ricans after the hurricane will encourage the island’s movement for independence, but I must admit that, as a Latin American, it is difficult to understand why the bird doesn’t fly away when the cage door is open.

This natural disaster has made it crystal clear that the future of Puerto Rico will rely exclusively on Puerto Ricans. The people have recognized this, and they are rising to the challenge, united.

CUE ofrecerá recursos a los empresarios desatendidos del área de Kansas City (espacios de trabajo, asistencia técnica para pequeñas empresas, recursos tecnológicos, capacitación y más); rodeado por cinco (5) cocinas comerciales de vanguardia que brindarán espacio de alquiler por hora para las empresas de alimentos en la fase de puesta en marcha (actuando como un comisario para empresas existentes y nuevas).

El objetivo de CUE es no solo jugar un rol en hacer de Kansas City una de las ciudades más emprendedoras de los Estados Unidos; pero hacerla también una de los más equitativas e inclusivas.

El foco del centro de emprendedores estará en los empresarios de minorías de bajos ingresos, para quienes gran parte del crecimiento empresarial de KC ha quedado atrás. El espacio de 18,000 pies cuadrados (el almacén existente de 11,000 pies cuadrados y 7,000 pies cuadrados de nuevos espacios expandidos) ofrecerá a estos empresarios desatendidos la oportunidad de acceder a la capacitación en asistencia técnica y la tecnología de última generación necesaria para ser competitiva y hacer crecer sus pequeñas empresas en Kansas City, y más allá.

11/05/17 Un grupo de personas fue detenido en Chihuahua después de que se les culpara de tener a niñas, hombres y mujeres privados de la libertad en un campo menonita en Ciudad Cuauhtémoc. El hombre era parte de la comunidad menonita y será deportado a su país de origen.

Algunos de los atacantes murieron en el lugar de los hechos y otros resultaron lesionados, pero lograron huir.

11/07/17 Autoridades de Chihuahua reportaron una jornada violenta después de que se encontraran 4 personas muertas en 11 horas en distintos puntos de la ciudad. Algunos de los cuerpos fueron abandonados en carreteras del estado, y otros en las afueras de distintas colonias. No se cree que el asesinato de estas personas esté relacionado y no se tiene idea de quién pudo cometer el crimen, pero las autoridades ya investigan los hechos.

n el 2016, Chase Knight consideró suicidarse.

En el 2017, posee un gimnasio de CrossFit y motiva a otros a cumplir sus objetivos.

“Empecé a deprimirme cuando tenía 9 o 10 años,” dijo Knight. “Me molestaban en la escuela, por lo que mis padres me llevaron a terapia y ahí me diagnosticaron con depresión”.

Durante su adolescencia, Knight se unió al ejército y desplegó en Afganistán. No fue hasta después de regresar que comenzó a buscar ayuda, dijo.

“I started becoming depressed when I was 9 or 10 (years old),” Knight said. “I was bullied at school, so my parents put me in therapy and I was diagnosed with depression.”

During his teens, Knight joined the military and deployed to Afghanistan. It wasn’t until after he had returned that he started seeking help, he said.

“When I was there, I was comfortable with the idea of dying,” Knight recalled. “Being O.K. with that is not normal, so I went to see a counselor.

But I kept dealing with bad thoughts – and every three months, it would pile up and I’d break.

It came to the point where I wanted it to end, because most of the time, I didn’t want to die.”

With help from his wife, Knight opened up to his parents and the military to seek help. He was put on temporary military profile status. He remembered going to a gun range and discussing his situation with a sergeant and commanding officer.

“The military was amazing with it,” Knight said.

Knight encourages anyone in the military who’s suffering from depression to discuss their situation and find people who care about them.

“If you have a soldier dealing with this, take care of them,” he said. “Let the military do its job.”

Knight said he has seen a therapist for about 10 months and has been released from his temporary profile status, meaning he’s not in danger of hurting himself. He also said he wants to make people understand there’s hope and help for those who are dealing with depression and considering suicide.

“There are two things that help me,” Knight said. “(One is) making a network – putting people in your life that are there to help you and support you. The second thing … (is) to focus on the goal, make something a priority in your life.

I say the priority for me outside of my family was my community. It made me realize that I have more to offer.”

Knight continues to be part of two big groups: the military and CrossFit. He owns a CrossFit gym and encourages his members to achieve their goals.

“My community, my members saved me,” he said. “CrossFit saved my life. It stopped me from killing myself. (My advice is to) surround yourself with individuals who will keep your life going in the right direction. Focus on a goal, be the best in whatever you’re doing and have that network.”

Knight encourages those who are suffering from depression, considering suicide and needing help to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-(800)-273-8255. The hotline includes a special extension for veterans, and their relatives and friends (press “1”), along with text message and online chat options.

Hispanic representation in the U.S. military keeps growing

The International Festival will include information booths, performances, cultural activities and fashion shows from countries around the globe, all featuring Park students representing their native country and sharing the unique and diverse characteristics of their homeland.

Countries scheduled to be represented include Brazil, France, Guatemala, Ireland, Japan, Micronesia, Nigeria, Russia and South Africa.

In all, the University boasts more than 260 students from 58 countries around the globe.

As multiple news agencies have reported, the shooting took place at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, a small, unincorporated town near San Antonio. Multiple news agencies have listed the death toll at 26 people, with the number of wounded estimated at 20.

Among the victims was 7-year-old Emily Garza. Garza was a daughter of Joann Ward, who also died. In addition’s Ward’s 5-yeard old daughter Brooke was killed.

The list of casualties also included Richard Rodriguez and his wife Theresa. Two of Rodriguez’s relatives – sister Angelina Santos and niece Regina Rodriguez – commented Tuesday (Nov. 7) to CNN about the tragedy. Santos felt that the mass shooting should send a clear message that there shouldn’t be any more guns in the United States.

“Anybody can carry a gun now,” she told the news agency. “Even crazy people. Tell the president that. No more guns.”

Santos’ comment probably referred to the shooter, David Patrick Kelley, given the information that has surfaced about Kelley’s life. As National Public Radio and other news outlets have reported, Kelley was institutionalized while he was in the Air Force and awaiting a court martial.

News agencies also have reported that Kelley had a history of domestic violence incidents.

A story published Tuesday by the New York Daily News included comments on social media from ex-schoolmates of Kelley’s in New Braunfels, the San Antonio suburb where Kelley had grown up. One of them was a Facebook post from a female schoolmate, who described him as “always twisted in high school” and commented: “I always thought if someone in our class would be able to do something like this, it would be him.”

But despite Kelley’s history, including a bad conduct discharge from the military, news agencies have reported that he managed to clear background checks to buy the weaponry he used to perpetrate the mass shooting. The shooting led to Kelley being shot in a firefight with Sutherland Springs resident Stephen Willeford.

Willeford and another man, Johnnie Langendorff, then reportedly engaged with Kelley in a vehicle chase that ended with Kelley’s vehicle wrecked and Kelley dead. Multiple sources have stated that Kelley shot himself.

he Department of Homeland Security has announced changes to the Temporary Protected Status program for Nicaragua and Honduras. TPS holders from both countries will be allowed to renew their status and work permits at least one more time. Attorney Jessica Piedra also suggests that they meet with an attorney to make a more permanent plan.

Acting Secretary Elaine Duke decided that Nicaragua no longer needs TPS and it will end for that country. The program will be extended one last time for 12 months so that Nicaraguans with TPS can make arrangements to return to their home countries. Nicaragua was set to expire on January 5, 2018, and will be extended through January 5, 2019.

She also reported on the status of Honduras.

Duke stated that no decision can be made, so Honduras will be automatically extended for six months beyond the current end date also on January 5, 2018. There will be future announcements about when TPS will end for Hondurans.

Both Hondurans and Nicaraguans will need to re-register their Temporary Protected Status to extend their work permits. Applicants should get ready now with their documents and money for the new applications. They will be given the standard 60-day window to submit the applications and it will likely start soon. The current filing fee is $495.00. If the application is submitted on time, their current work permits will be extended automatically by six months.

Temporary Protected Status is given to persons inside the United States if they cannot return home due to a natural disaster or other circumstance.

Nicaragua and Honduras were given TPS in 1999 due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Mitch.

Duke states that Nicaragua has now recovered and that it’s government did not request that TPS be extended. She states that she needs more information about the status of Honduras.

Acting Secretary Duke called on Congress to pass a permanent solution for immigrants with TPS status as most have been in the United States for over two decades. While waiting for Congress, it is important for each family to review their options under the current law. All TPS holders should meet with an immigration attorney to make a plan for their future. “Many of our TPS clients have almost adult US citizen children. We are advising they consider applying for a travel permit and traveling outside the United States to have a legal entry. This may allow them to obtain permanent residency through their family members. However, it is important to meet with a qualified immigration attorney prior to taking any action,” says Attorney Jessica Piedra.

The government has now ended TPS for Haiti, Sudan, Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and now Nicaragua. The largest group of TPS holders is from El Salvador. Their designation will be under review soon as the current program ends on March 9, 2018.

World Series title eluded Carlos A Beltran for years, with some of those years spent as a Kansas City Royal.

It eludes him no more.

The 40-year-old Puerto Rican native spent this baseball season with the Houston Astros, who won their first-ever World Series by defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers in the best-of-seven championship series 4-3. Houston capped its title run with a 5-1 Game 7 victory on Nov. 1 at Dodger Stadium.

Beltran, who made his major-league debut in 1998 with the Royals and played for Kansas City into the 2004 season, commented on winning a World Series title after 20 seasons in the big leagues during an interview with Fox Sports minutes after the series had ended.

“I’m happy,” he said. “I’m blessed.”

It was the second World Series appearance for Beltran. He helped St. Louis reach the 2013 World Series. The Cardinals fell to Boston in six games.

Beltran was among 12 Latin American-born players who helped the Astros win this year’s title. The others included infielders Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa.

Altuve, a Venezuelan, helped force Game 7 by going 3-for-5 (single, double, home run) with four RBIs and three runs scored during Houston’s 13-12, extra-inning win in Game 6. Correa, a Puerto Rican, collected seven hits, including two homers and a double; drove in five runs; and scored three runs during the series.

In addition, Houston’s roster included Connecticut-born Latino George Springer.

Springer, the son of a Puerto Rican mother and the grandson of a Panamanian immigrant, set World Series records for total bases (29) and extra-base hits, and was named Most Valuable Player.

At press time, it was uncertain if Beltran would be with Altuve, Correa, Springer and the other Astros in 2018 to defend their title.

Position Summary: The Outreach Worker will recruit pregnant women from the community for enrollment into the Kansas City Healthy Start program. The Kansas City Healthy Start Initiative offers services and support for mothers, fathers, children and families in Jackson County, MO and Wyandotte County, KS before, during and after pregnancy.

Duties and Responsibilities: • Work with subcontracted site teams to determine prospective eligible pregnant women for recruitment and enrollment into the Kansas City Healthy Start Initiative (KCHSI); • Coordinate outreach for enrolling pregnant women in KCHSI with local shelters, WIC, local high schools and other partners; • Provide information that will encourage eligible pregnant women to enroll in KCHSI; • Distribute marketing materials at places where women of child bearing age congregate (grocery stores, laundromats, beauty parlors, nail salons, etc.) for recruiting pregnant women; • Reach out via local media (radio/TV) and social media to help recruit participants; • Assist with the planning and coordination of community baby showers with community partners; • Assist the Community Health Workers with follow-up case management (but does not carry a case load); • Document all outreach activity for data collection purposes; • Participate in monthly KCHSI training activities and events, and • Attend Mother & Child Health Coalition’s Quarterly Meetings and other designated meetings as required.

Minimum Qualifications: Bilingual English/Spanish required. The Outreach Worker should be very familiar with the community service area and urban neighborhoods, and comfortable working with a diverse population. Ability to work independently to achieve program goals.

Education Requirement: Must have high school diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED). Associates or bachelor’s degree preferred.

The Lee’s Summit Housing Authority (LSHA) will accept bids from qualified persons or firms for the Lee Haven Interior Upgrades project.
