hristmas is often thought of as a Christian holiday – a celebration of Jesus Christ’s birth. But as history shows, other faith traditions and some secular traditions have contributed to the Dec. 25 holiday, in terms of when and how it’s observed. And as history shows, the way Christians have observed it has changed over the centuries. Before Christ’s birth, some early Europeans celebrated the wonder of birth during the darkest days of winter. Beginning the week leading up to the winter solstice and continuing for a full month, with Dec. 25 as the most sacred day, the ancient Romans celebrated the birthday of Mithra, an infant god believed to have been born of a rock. Ironically, during the early days of Christianity, Christ’s birth wasn’t celebrated. It wasn’t until the fourth century that church officials determined that Christ’s birth should be considered a holiday. Originally, the celebration was called the Feast of the Nativity. Although the Bible doesn’t mention the day of Christ’s birth, Pope Julius I chose Dec. 25. It’s believed the church chose the date to adopt and absorb the traditions of the Saturnalia

En otras palabras, esperamos neutralidad de la red. La neutralidad de la red preserva los derechos de las personas a comunicarse libremente en línea. Esta neutralidad es el principio básico que prohíbe que los proveedores de servicios de Internet, como AT & T, Comcast y Verizon, aceleren, desaceleren o bloqueen cualquier contenido, aplicación o sitio web. ¿Te imaginas vivir en un país donde las compañías telefónicas dicten a quién puedes llamar, cuándo y qué puedes decir? It’s the basic principle that prohibits internet service providers such as AT&T, Comcast and Verizon from speeding up, slowing down or blocking any content, applications or websites. Can you imagine living in a country where phone companies dictate who you can call – and when and what you can say? No, right? Wrong. The United States has become a country where internet providers can dictate how people surf the ’net. On Dec. 14, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to repeal net neutrality regulations. That means, unfortunately, that internet providers may slow down any content they don’t wish to spread – and block opinions with which they disagree. During a discussion I had about the repeal with coworkers, those who favored the repeal argued that people wouldn’t notice a difference. However, the repeal of net neutrality could affect all of us more than you might expect. Thanks to the elimination of net neutrality, internet providers may start charging higher fees for higher speeds. Some of us might be able to afford this luxury. But others will end up with below-standard internet speeds. Moreover, companies may charge fees to businesses if they want to speed up access to their websites. For instance, if Netflix wants to stream its movies at its current speed, a fee can be charged to Netflix. But who’ll end up paying for those fees? Undoubtedly, you and I – and every Netflix user. This is a perfect equation for big companies to get richer at the expense of the consumers – all while restricting people’s rights to communicate online.

Menorahs have been lighted daily, starting on the evening of Dec. 12 and ending on Dec. 20 in residences celebrating the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. Households that observe Kwanzaa are preparing for the weeklong celebration of African heritage and culture that begins on Dec. 26. This is a special season. Celebrations are marked by happy assembly, gift exchanges, lavish food and libation, and, frequently, overindulgence. The detriment of overeating can, happily, be born; the discomfort it causes is only temporary. Intemperate consumption of alcoholic beverages, however, can be disastrous and permanent. Last year (and on average over the past five years), 300 people nationwide died in drunk-driving crashes between Christmas and New Year’s, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. During the month of December 2016, there were 3,067 motor vehicle traffic fatalities nationally, the agency reported. One-quarter were from alcohol-impaired driving crashes. That’s 781 lives ended, 781 grieving families. Avoid tragedy by following tips for celebrating safely from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Plan ahead. If you intend to drink alcohol, arrange, before you head out to celebrate, for a sober driver to take you home. If you’re the designated sober driver, take the responsibility seriously. Even if you’ve had only one alcoholic beverage, designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation to get home safely. Consider rideshare programs such as Lyft or Uber. Be prepared to take the car keys away from someone at your celebration who is impaired. If you see another driver on the road that you suspect is impaired, pull over and call 9-1-1. Download the NHTSA’s SaferRide mobile app. It identifies the user’s location and calls a taxi or pre-determined friend to pick the user up. The free app is available for Android devices on Google Play and Apple devices on the iTunes store and on the NHTSA’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign Website (https://one.nhtsa. gov/drivesober/). Law enforcement officers will be out in force during the holidays, stepping up efforts to catch impaired drivers in order to prevent tragedies. They’re reminding motorists at every turn that drinking and driving could do a lot more harm than merely getting them on Santa’s “naughty list.” The holidays are about enjoying one another and making joyful new memories to treasure. According to the Mexican newspaper, the products that might be restricted include oranges, tangerines, clementines, various types of berries, papayas, mangos, avocados and tomatoes. El Universal reported the restrictions would take effect because the U.S. government believes the imports will affect American farming production. The U.S. government hasn’t confirmed the restrictions, but the issue is expected to be discussed during the next round of NAFTA talks, scheduled for Jan. 23-27, 2018, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Mexican farmers are already concerned their production will be affected. In a report, the Mexican secretary of agriculture listed the most popular Mexican imports in the United States. They included beer, tomatoes, avocados, tequila, green peppers, certain types of berries and beef. News of the possible restrictions bothers a few Kansas City area residents, such as Shawnee, Kan., resident Evangelina Cervantes. “I think our government should really think about who is going to be affected if they ban these products,” Cervantes said. “I … (will) be very upset if I don’t get to eat avocados. The Mexican avocado has (a) great quality, and I would love to keep consuming it. I don’t see how we are affecting our farmers when we are receiving products to cover what we consume. If (we) start setting up barriers, the only people that … (will) be damaged … (will be) us.”

The news organization reported that a plane taking Somali immigrants from the United States back to their home country left from Louisiana and stopped in Senegal before returning to the United States. ICE claimed it couldn’t get a sufficient flight crew because of issues with the hotel in Dakar, promoting the return to the United States. Moreover, there were other logistical implications and ICE decided to bring the detainees back to the United States. One passenger told Newsweek that the immigrants weren’t given adequate food and water during the trip or access to a working bathroom. In addition, the air conditioning wasn’t working, making it difficult to breathe. “We were treated like slaves,” passenger Rahim Mohamed was quoted by Newsweek as saying. “We weren’t allowed to use the bathroom or get out of the plane. I was not given the medication I need. I peed into a bottle, and then I peed on myself. It was a horrible thing, man. I thought my life was pretty much over.” ICE – which claimed that most of the deportees had been convicted of violent crimes, including rape, assault and homicide – released a statement about the allegations. “The allegations of ICE mistreatment onboard the Somali flight are categorically false,” the statement read. “No one was injured during the flight, and there were no incidents or altercations that would have caused any injures on the flight.” Human rights advocates and lawyers of the detainees have requested that ICE delay deportation orders.

DM: ¿Cuál ha sido la respuesta de la comunidad a la escuela? KD: Bueno, ... (ha sido) muy buena. Abrimos el año pasado, comenzando con jardín de niños y primer grado, teníamos 125 estudiantes. Leading the free charter school in pursuing that mission is Kristin L. Droege, CWCKC’s founding executive director. Recently, Droege talked with Dos Mundos about CWCKC. The following is a transcript of that interview: Dos Mundos: Can you tell … the parents what is the main difference between CWCKC and other schools? Kristin Droege: (At) CWCKC, it’s about much more than just test scores; it’s about providing the opportunity to grow into a full, complete person, understanding themselves and how they fit into the world. Our unique approach is to bring together students … (who are different in terms of) economic level, ethnicity and culture that represent our diverse community, teaching in a way that acknowledges that those differences are a benefit. We put a big focus on supporting the social and emotional development of the child, along with their academic work. (It’s about) working on their skills to tackle the challenges that life brings them … to be successful beyond school … in the real world. With our curriculum, children are not just learning facts…. They are learning to solve problems they could face in real life. DM: (What) has been the response of the community to the school? KD: Well, … (it has been) very strong. We opened last year, … starting with kindergarten and first grade and we had 125 students. We’ve grown this year to include second grade and we are at 220 students. And we are one of the few schools … (in) the area that received a charter to grow all the way through … (the 12th) grade. So we will continue growing … for several years. This will allow students to grow together with their community of peers… They will move smoothly all the way through high school.

DM: The country is going through a difficult time related to diversity. So how do you think that the school environment is helping kids? KD: I think that we enroll a lot of students whose families have struggled with the educational system in Kansas City. There … (are) so many changes, … (closings) and different kinds of leadership (they’ve had to deal with in) … going through unsuccessful experiences in the educational system. I think that families are really looking for a place that gets to know their child as a person and understands them in an individual form of community, … in which the family feels welcome. 12/14/17 El cuerpo de un hombre fue abandonado sin vida en la Colonia 3 de mayo de Chihuahua. El hallazgo fue hecho por varias personas que transitaban por el lugar y que encontraron el cuerpo sin vida de este hombre. Al llegar al lugar, las autoridades descubrieron que esta persona tenía un alambre amarrado en el cuello. El incidente sigue siendo investigado por autoridades de la ciudad. 12/15/17 La policía de Chihuahua descubrió los cuerpos de 4 personas sin vida en la Avenida Quinta Real. Autoridades informaron que se encontraron dos parejas sin vida, todos los cuerpos tenían señas de tortura y violencia. Al día de hoy se sigue investigando quién pudo cometer el crimen pues las autoridades no tienen pistas de los culpables. 12/16/17 Autoridades de Chihuahua fueron llamados por vecinos de la Colonia Real Universidad pues se les dieron reportes de un auto abandonado y al llegar al lugar descubrieron el cuerpo de una persona dentro de la cajuela del auto. Según la policía, este es el segundo reporte que se da y que está relacionado con el asesinato de personas en el mismo lugar por lo que ya se ha iniciado una investigación.

ASHINGTON — I understand perfectly well why presidents aren’t fond of journalists. We’re seated on opposite sides of the table, and our work involves revealing things that people in power might want to hide. Additionally, our mission as journalists is to ensure that they do not abuse this power. But tell that to President Donald Trump.

The president just doesn’t understand that our duty is to question him. We’re not here to applaud him, offer praise or boost his selfesteem. And when he lies — according to The Washington Post he told 1,628 lies or misleading claims in his first 298 days in office — our duty is to report it. But when reporters accuse Trump of creating his own truth, he accuses independent journalists of publishing fake news. All of this, of course, will not end well. This is not a new phenomenon. I’ve just seen “The Post,” a film about the heroic efforts of a group of journalists at The Washington Post, who revealed to the American public that four presidents had lied to them about the Vietnam War — lies that cost American soldiers their lives. For years, the official message about Vietnam had been that America

Director Steven Spielberg told me that when he read the screenplay he had been working on another film, but felt he had to make it immediately. And while it’s inevitable that former President Richard Nixon’s attacks on the press in the film will be compared with the way Trump now maligns the mainstream media, Spielberg managed to avoid mentioning the name of the current president of the United States during our discussion. The movie, he told me, deals with many topics — including feminism, represented by the late Katharine Graham, the longtime owner of The Washington Post, majestically portrayed by Meryl Streep — and he did not want biased headlines to distract attention from that. So, no, “The Post” is not a movie about Trump. And yet one can’t avoid thinking of what we are going through today as we watch officials in the Nixon administration try to silence and restrict the access of the free press. Spielberg understands journalists very well. Streep and Tom Hanks, who plays Ben Bradlee, the rebel editor of The Washington Post, will be responsible, I believe, for a spike in applications to journalism schools. I spoke with Streep and Hanks about the movie, and they also wanted to talk about the role of journalism going forward. Streep triggered Trump’s rage almost a year ago when she criticized him at the Golden Globe Awards for mocking a reporter with a disability. In response, Trump attacked her with a biting tweet. But she hasn’t stopped defending journalists. “Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you: the fourth estate, our first line of defense against tyranny,” Streep said in a recent speech. Hanks mentioned that a few months back he sent a new coffee machine to the journalists covering the White House. He attached a note saying, “Keep up the good fight for truth, justice and the American Way. Especially the truth part.” I’m pretty sure the coffee must have tasted much better that day to the White House press corps. Fiction can sometimes bring us very close to the truth. “The Post” is based on the controversial publication of the so-called Pentagon Papers, amid frantic efforts by the government to prevent the documents from being seen by the public. But the most important thing about the film is the way it illustrates the fierce tension that must always exist between people in power and journalists. I left the theater holding my head high, and ready for what’s next.

new Pew Research Center study suggests that although 90 percent of Americans celebrate Christmas, the elements of American Christmas celebrations are changing. According to The New York Times, the study was based on a survey conducted with 1,503 adults. It found that Americans still celebrate Christmas, but are more likely to do so in secular ways. Millennials, for example, are more likely to celebrate Christmas as a cultural holiday, rather than by attending a religious service. Overall, the survey subjects favored celebrating Christmas as a religious holiday, with 53 percent saying they observed it as a religious holiday, compared to 33 percent saying they celebrated it as a cultural holiday. However, 82 percent of the subjects claimed they would spend Christmas with family or friends, with 51 percent of the Christmas observers saying they planned to celebrate the holiday primarily by attending church. The survey also asked participants about their beliefs in the biblical Christmas story. Only 57 percent of them said they believed in it. The research also showed the responses were divided along political party lines, with responses from Republicans seeming to emphasize observing Christmas in religious ways and Democrats observing it through secular ways. The results emerge amid a recurring national conversation over whether the United States is a country that respects Christianity. President Trump is among the political leaders who’ve participated in the conversation. During political rallies, the president has claimed that “Christmas is back, better and bigger than before.”

Over the past two years, the partnership has allowed El Centro to renovate the academy playground. “We appreciate and thank Royals Charities for their partnership,” Caudillo said. “Their investment in our young children has created an environment that is conducive to promoting focus and attending to the task at hand. These renovations and upgrades to the playground and classroom furniture mean teachers and children have an environment that is calmer, more organized, helping all to learn.”

aul Escareno passed away at the home on Dec. 12, 2017. He was born June 8, 1945 in Kansas City, MO to Margaret and Bruno Escareno. Four brothers preceded him in death, Anthony, Benjamin, Manual and Jessie. He was also preceded in death by son, Victor Fuentes and by daughter, Alicia Escareno. He is survived by brother, Jose Escareno (Micaela), sister Guadalupe Oropeza, Ms. Dottie Griffen, companion of 23 years; daughter Margaret Jones, daughter Daniella Fuentes, daughter, and Sophia Rios, daughter. He also enjoyed being the grandfather to ten grandchildren and two (2) great-children. Paul was also an avid volunteer for the Rosedale Development Association and Rainbow Mennonite Church. grandfather and great-grandfather. He was born August 15, 1925 to Amalia and Lucas Quijas in Kansas City, KS. He attended Bishop Ward High School. He served in the US Navy aboard the carrier USS Steamer Bay during World War II. Jesse married his beloved Rose on May 5, 1951. Jesse was an active father and supported his sons in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, school bands, Little League Baseball, and military service. Jesse and Rose were season ticket holders to the Kansas City Chiefs from 1963 to 2001. He was also an avid fan of Kansas Jayhawk sports. He was Office Manager, then later, the Chief Financial Officer for United Sign until his retirement in 1990. After retiring, he enjoyed traveling with Rose and spending time with his grandchildren. Jesse survived his wife, Rose, and leaves behind his sons, Carl (Peggy) Quijas, Robert (Sandie) Quijas and Michael (Vicki) Quijas; four grandchildren, Jared Quijas, Mathew (Heather) Quijas, Nicholas (Kayla) Quijas, and Laura (Zach) Zirhut; two greatgrandchildren, Alexandria Quijas and Austyn Rose Zirhut, as well
