El Congreso cerró el cierre el lunes (22 de enero).

Normalmente, nadie obtiene nada de un cierre del gobierno. Aparentemente, este último cierre no fue diferente.

La resolución para levantar el cierre fue el resultado de un acuerdo alcanzado luego de que un grupo de senadores bipartidistas presionó a sus líderes para que aceptaran un acuerdo. A Congress ended the shutdown on Monday

(Jan. 22). Normally, nobody gains anything from a government shutdown. Seemingly, this latest shutdown was no different.

The resolution to lift the shutdown resulted from a deal reached after a bipartisan group of senators had pushed their leaders to come to terms. Senate Democrats agreed to support a bill to allow short-term spending to fund federal government operations. Surprisingly, Democrats in Congress allowed this agreement to take place without first addressing the fate of young undocumented immigrants – which Democrats had repeatedly claimed was their foremost concern.

Unfortunately, however, the agreement is far from a long-term solution. The approved bill will fund federal spending only through Feb. 8.

On a good note, the bill Congress passed to end the shutdown includes an agreement to extend funding for the Children’s

Include all the personal information of every individual who’ll be included on your return, such as bank information, Social Security numbers and full names. Put all W-2s and 1099 forms in the same binder. If a person has any other form of income, include the information about it, too. *Review previous filing information: Check your previous tax returns to help gauge how much of a refund you might get or how much money you might have to pay the IRS. As a result, the report urged the federal government to disband the Border Patrol. It also called on the United Nations and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights to investigate the federal agency.

Arguing that marijuana is bad for one’s health is irresponsible, because science hasn’t confirmed that yet. However, arguing that marijuana is safe also is irresponsible. There simply isn’t enough research that offers proof that marijuana is safe to consume – i.e., that it doesn’t cause long-term damage to the human body.

Cities and states are putting their citizens at risk by making this questionable substance legal without a thorough discussion of the issues concerning marijuana.

Therefore, it’s up to us citizens to do our duty as parents, grownups and educators and talk to our children about cannabis.

If you need an extra incentive, think back to when you were in high school or college, when peer pressure probably drove you to have your first alcoholic beverage and/or cigarette. Why would it be different for today’s children with marijuana?

So parents, grownups and educators, please talk to your children about marijuana. And start by telling them this: Just because it’s legal (in some states), doesn’t make it risk-free.

Deportando a 2 millones de ciudadanos nacidos americanos, se tomó todo de las casas, automóviles, etc. Fueron obligados a abandonar con la ropa que llevaban. El señor Spain, quién trabajó bajo Hoover y hablaba español, traicionó a su propia gente junto con el presidente que estaba rompiendo la ley.

El discurso de odio racista y las políticas de odio del el presidente Trump están hiriendo a tantas familias de color. El partido republicano lo ha cubierto sólo para mantener sus posiciones en el Congreso. Los Democratas tienen que mostrar valor y tomar acciones firmes y directas para salvar las vidas de todos esos hermosos soñadores y sus familias. He estado orando a Dios para ayudarlos a ellos, para encontrar una manera de mantenerlos en américa.

We must unite all the people of color, all the people of reason, who will stand with the dreamers and their families.we must be firm, direct,and up front that we want and need a clean bill to make the dreamers american citizens.we can no longer play games with the lives of so many young men and women who trusted the system and let them down.

If the worse happens, we must find away for canada to help out. They will have a chance to make a life there. ecently, I commented on the reopening R of communication between North and South Korea. Little is known about the con-

tent of the phone calls, but there was plenty of specualtion.

This time, I’ll concentrate on what I know to be true: Bilateral communication is going strong, and face-to-face meetings have taken place. Furthermore, the two Koreas intend to take their dialog beyond the Winter Olympics.

Most of the facts reported by media outlets about North-South communications have been related to the Winter Olympics. Not only will North Korea’s athletes be represented in the Winter Olympics, but North Korea will serve in a sort of co-host role. For instance, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s favorite girl band (the Moranbong Band) is rumored to be performing there, and North and South Korea will march into the opening ceremony together under a unified flag. Additionally, the International Olympics Committee has approved the creation of a unified women’s ice hockey team.

Moreover, on Monday (Jan., 22), the decisions were formalized when the lead singer of Kim’s favorite girl band and a North Korean delegation toured Seoul.

Understandably, many South Koreans aren’t happy with the recent turn of events. They believe their country has worked too hard and invested too much to have to share the Olympics with North Korea, which has given them nothing but troubles for decades. But others have received the news with much interest. Case in point: Media outlets followed Moranbong Band lead singer Hyon Song-wul’s every step during her trip to South Korea, reporting on what coffee she drinks and what she has for breakfast.

Unfortunately, however, some opponents to North Koreans coming into South Korea set fire to a portrait of Kim – and North Korean flags near where a North Korean delegation was staying. “The local media and news industries should get their stories straight,” they chanted.

“We are against North Koreans coming here,” others said.

Hopefully, the conversations between the North and South Korean governments will continue to be peaceful. There is some hope of that, as South and North Korea have agreed to conduct military talks.

Hopefully, the peaceful cooperation between the two Koreas will continue, too – and extend far beyond the Winter Olympics.

Additionally, women will be allowed to enter three stadiums in major cities. And stadiums will begin accommodating families. As a result, the old tradition of men and women being separated in public places will slowly end.

a pobre asistencia escolar tiene un gran impacto en el bienestar de un niño.

Cuando una asistencia pobre se convierte en normal, generalmente se defin-e como dos ausencias por mes, pueden afectar negativamente el rendimiento académico del niño. Por ejemplo, los estudiantes con problemas de asistencia en preescolar, jardín de infantes y primer grado son más propensos a retrasarse en la lectura durante el tercer grado. También es más probable que muestren una disminución en la autoestima o un comportamiento perturbador. Las estadísticas muestran que los niños que se atrasan en la lectura tienen más probabilidades de abandonar la escuela.

oor school attendance can greatly impact a child’s well-being.

When poor attendance becomes a pattern – typically defined as two absences per month – absences can negatively impact a child’s academic performance. For example, students with attendance concerns in preschool, kindergarten and the first grade are more likely to fall behind in reading by the third grade. They’re also more likely to display a decrease in self-esteem or an increase in disruptive behavior. And statistics show that children who fall behind in reading are more likely to drop out of school.

Unfortunately, the negative effects follow children into adulthood. Studies show that dropping out of high school is linked to poverty, health concerns and run-ins with the criminal justice system.

With such unfortunate consequences in mind, parents should make school attendance a priority. For example, families should plan vacations during school breaks. If possible, parents should schedule medical appointments after school to ensure children aren’t missing instruction and assignments.

Parents also must educate themselves on school attendance policies regarding illnesses.

Although keeping your child at home for a fever, vomiting or other contagious illnesses is recommended, children should make their best efforts to attend if they simply have a runny nose, cough or headache.

In addition, families must communicate with the school regarding absences. Parents should collect missed schoolwork, so their children can catch up at home. They also should speak with school counselors or social workers for additional resources and strategies to improve school attendance.

Every minute of the school day is important to a child’s social, emotional and academic growth. When education is a priority, children have an opportunity for success – inside and outside of the classroom.

Fiber is naturally present in vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables and fruits, but also in oats, whole wheat, wild rice and other whole grains.

Sugars: In a label you can find natural sugars and added sugars. These usually have a high glycemic index and therefore are harmful.

Because they can increase our sugar (glucose) in the blood too fast causing a rapid increase in the level of insulin.

These sugars cause weight gain in two ways.

First, they force the pancreas to produce more insulin to avoid a high level of glucose in the blood that can damage brain function. Insulin lowers glucose and promotes its storage as fat.

On the other hand they make us hungry again, 1-3 hours after consuming them because the insulin lowers the blood glucose level and this stimulates the appetite.

The natural sugars are what gives the sweet flavor to fruits and vegetables such as sweet potatoes or corn.

Trump has made it clear that he won’t sign an immigration reform bill unless it includes funding for his “big, beautiful wall,” as he likes to call it.

No one would gain from approval for Trump’s wall – just as no one gains from a government shutdown.

Trump’s Useless Wall Un Muro Inútil

l presidente Donald Trump tiene un muro en la cabeza. Por más que le dicen que una muralla entre México y Estados Unidos no va a detener significativamente el paso de drogas e indocumentados, él insiste en la absurda y anticuada idea.

El muro es un concepto muy viejo. Altos y poderosos muros tenían el propósito de mantener a los enemigos fuera de los castillos en la Europa medieval y, del siglo XIV al XVII, la principal ampliación de una gran muralla en China le sirvió a la dinastía Ming para protegerse de grupos nómadas. Sin embargo, en un siglo XXI marcado por la globalización, la tecnología y el movimiento de gente, los muros no tienen sentido.

Pero Trump quiere el suyo.

Es grave cuando el principal asesor del presidente asegura que su jefe no sabe lo que dice.

El problema es que sería un muro inútil. No detendría a la mayoría de los inmigrantes y las drogas que entran al país. ¿Por qué? Porque muchos inmigrantes llegan con visa y por avión, y las drogas entran por túneles y aeropuertos. Por eso.

“And I’ll build them very inexpensively ... and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.”

It’s very difficult to understand why a man who describes himself as a genius — and a great entrepreneur — would ask Congress for $18 billion to build a project that will not work.

According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, the money would be used to add about 350 miles of fencing to an existing 654-mile border wall; even if the project were completed, about 1,000 miles along the border would still have no physical barrier.

It’s worth noting that we’ve had a similar debate before. Former President Bill Clinton put Operation Gatekeeper in place in 1994 with the purpose of restricting the passage of undocumented immigrants to San Diego from Tijuana. The program increased the number of border patrol agents in the area and built miles of new fence (yes, Democrats have also voted to build a wall along the Mexican border).

In the end, Operation Gatekeeper failed.

Undocumented immigrants stopped entering San Diego through Tijuana, but they started crossing deserts and mountain ranges and passing through other states.

The crossing became an extremely dangerous undertaking. Over the years, thousands died attempting it.

Operation Gatekeeper was like placing a big stone in a moving river; the water just ran around the sides. Neither more walls nor more agents prevented the growth in the undocumented immigrant population, from 3.5 million in 1990 to 11.2 million by 2013, according to data from the American Immigration Council.

Conclusion: No wall can stop an undocumented immigrant if they are determined to cross over, much less if they are hungry and have been promised a job up north.

And no wall can stop the flow of drugs from Latin America into the U.S. as long as there are millions of drug addicts living here. Migration and drug trafficking are, in the end, a matter of supply and demand.

I do believe that every country has a right to secure its borders. But there are much more humane and rational ways to protect a country than building walls. The renegotiation of NAFTA could do more to regulate the entrance of undocumented people into the U.S. than a 350-mile wall ever could.

Sadly, the hardest walls to bring down are the ones we erect in our heads.

Analyzing Sunday’s activity in Las Vegas for The New Yorker, Amanda Fortini wrote: “If the day had an overarching message, it was that white women needed to get their s—t together.” Fortini suggested that someone who articulated that message was Tamika Mallory, event co-chair and an African American.

“Stand up for me, white women!” Mallory was quoted as saying.

In a story for Newsweek, Marie Solis reported that another event co-chair, Carmen Perez, urged minority women to make sure they’re included when political and women’s rights issues are addressed.

“If you don’t see your community at the table, make sure to pull up a chair,” Perez was quoted as saying. “And if you’re white, scooch over your chair a little.”

Now 43, Perez Castillo didn’t escape until she was almost 40. One day, the family went to the hospital and she ran away. Later, her captor was convicted on slavery and domestic work charges.

Maria Diaz lived in similar conditions.

“A woman took me to her home when I was only 10 years old,” Diaz said during a recent interview with Dos Mundos. “They used to give my mom money. We were really poor, so I didn’t have a choice.”

Diaz said she took care of the woman’s youngest kid. She also did most of the housework.

“Even though I was really little, the woman used to force me to clean the house,” the native Mexican recalled. “I spent … a few years (there), but I convinced my mother to get me out of there.”

Conditions for girls in similar situations to Perez Castillo and Diaz aren’t expected to change any time soon. There’s little regulation of forced labor in Latin America; and most indigenous people live in poverty, making them vulnerable to exploitation.

Diaz, for one, would like to see conditions change.

“I hope the … (governments) help the girls, so they don’t have to go through what I went (through),” Diaz stated.

SKC starts preseason training in Arizona

Club looking to “move on” after departures of Feilhaber and Dwyer Preseason training is underway for Sporting Kansas City. But two players who’ve been mainstays on the Sporting roster in recent seasons aren’t participating in it: Dom Dwyer and Benny Feilhaber.

Dwyer, an English-born forward, started playing for Sporting in 2012.

Midway through the 2017 season, he left via a trade with Orlando SC. As multiple news agencies reported, the Brazilian-born Feilhaber left Sporting on Jan. 3 after a fiveseason stint via a trade with MLS expansion club Los Angeles FC. “Those are two guys that had really good service for the club….

But they’re … now with their clubs, and they have to move on,” Sporting manager and technical director Peter Vermes said during a Jan. 20 press conference and player meetand-greet at Children’s Mercy Park.

“And so do we.”

Losing players such as Dwyer and Feilhaber are part of the nature of sports, Vermes suggested.

“It’s always difficult when you make decisions and you have roster changes,” he said. “But I just don’t know of any roster in any sport that remains the same from year to year.

And the other thing is, at some … point, some player’s always going to have to leave us because at some point … I guess their legs are going to run out. So they’re never going to be here forever.”

Midfielder Roger Espinoza, a native Honduran who’s in his second stint with Sporting, shared Vermes’ mindset.

According to the roster distributed during the press conference and meet-and-greet, there are 28 players with Sporting as the club conducts its preseason training in Arizona, including some recent acquisitions through the Jan. 10-14 MLS SuperDraft in Philadelphia.

The club will get its first taste of competition in 2018 this Saturday (Jan. 27), when Sporting faces the Phoenix Rising FC trialists in a friendly match in Scottsdale.

’Hawks squeeze out victory over Bears

To University of Kansas (KU) men’s basketball coach Bill Self, KU’s 70-67 Jan. 20 win over Baylor University at Allen Fieldhouse was a sign of games to come.

After leading 38-27 at halftime, the Jayhawks found themselves trailing by six (67-61) with less than three minutes left in the second half. KU staged a 9-0 run to pull out the three-point Big 12 Conference win.

The Jayhawks made four defensive stands during the final 1:14 as part of their comeback. Guard Devonté Graham felt that scoring down the stretch by Malik Newman – who paced KU with 24 points – helped free up the Jayhawks defensively.

“Malik did a great job of getting to the basket and putting us on his back,” said Graham, whose steal on the final possession clinched it. “And then, all we had to do was get those stops – and we did.”

What made the Jayhawks’ clutch defensive stands important was their ability to get out

in transition and then make plays on offense, suggested Baylor guard Manu Lecomte, who finished with 10 points – behind Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. and Nuni Omot, who each scored 14.

“It’s a fast team,” Lecomte said. “Once they get the rebound, they’re out…. That’s the problem: When you miss (shots), you (have) got to get back in transition.”

The comeback victory came about a day after the Jayhawks had learned that freshman forward Billy Preston was leaving the program. As multiple media outlets reported, Preston opted to play professionally in Bosnia.

In losing Preston, the Jayhawks will “have to eke out some” wins the rest of the season, as they did against Baylor, Self told reporters during his postgame press conference. When asked if he was expecting their meeting with the University of Oklahoma Tuesday night (Jan. 23) at the Lloyd Noble Center to be that type of game, Self replied: “I’d love to eke out one Tuesday.”

Self didn’t get his wish: The Jayhawks lost 85-80.

The meeting is to be held on Friday, January 26th, from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. at the Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center, 4750 Troost Ave., Kansas City, MO. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grants money to investigate and clean up contaminated properties, known as “Brownfields”. At this public meeting, brownfield sites and projects will be selected for assistance by EPA grants previously awarded to Kansas City. Community participation in this process is highly encouraged. The public is invited to provide feedback and assist with decisions that will help with the removal of blight and contamination, create healthier places to live, work and play, and create jobs and new economic opportunities.
