In 2007, she started working for Olathe (Kan.) Public Schools Unified School District 233 as a tutor for the School Plus program.

Then, she was hired for her current position – working in the Parents as Teachers program.

Mr. Reyes was born in Kansas City, Kan., on May 4, 1938. He was the second of four children of Joseph Reyes and Mary Mejia Reyes. Joseph worked in an ice plant; Mary was chiefly a homemaker who worked for a short time in a meatpacking house.

The Mattie Rhodes Center on Kansas City’s Westside was a favorite place for Mr. Reyes to be during his childhood and adolescence. There he played multiple sports and participated in several group activities.

Mr. Reyes graduated from Westport High School in 1957 and later studied graphics communications at Johnson County Community College.

Following high school, Mr. Reyes worked as a sales representative for Spanish Gardens before becoming sales director. From 1962 to 1983, he was employed as a certified welder for companies that included Koch Refrigeration (now Koch Heating and Cooling, Inc.), TWA and Payne Manufacturing.

In 1983, Mr. Reyes joined his wife, Clara fulltime at Dos Mundos, the newspaper the couple had started in their basement in June 1981. In addition to advertising sales and marketing, Mr. Reyes also had a hand in newspaper layout and distribution. Despite his cancer diagnosis in January, he continued working up until two weeks ago.

In recognition of his efforts as publisher of Dos Mundos, the region’s first and oldest bilingual English-Spanish newspaper, Mr. Reyes has received such honors as the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Hispanic Publications; the Top 100 Hispanics in the Media by the Hispanic Media Association; a special achievement award from the National Association of Hispanic Publications; and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Kansas City’s Small Business of the Year Award.

A dedicated community booster, Mr. Reyes was active in civic and corporate engagement.

Over decades, he was involved with groups that include the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City, the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Westside Business Association, American G. I. Forum, the National Federation of Hispanic Owned Publications, Fiesta Bullwhacker Days Olathe Ks.,

the Westside Fountain Committee and more. He cofounded the Southwest Boulevard Business Association and served as president.

For his many contributions to the community over a lifetime, Mr. Reyes has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards. Among those are the Guadalupe Center’s I. Pat Rios Award, the Greater Kansas City National Hispanic Heritage Committee’s Community Service Award and with his wife, Clara, the Jackson County, Mo.’s Legacy List of the 175 most influential builders of Jackson County.

Mr. Reyes will be remembered for his positive impact on the community, his integrity, his quiet good humor, his enthusiasm for Christmas and his devotion to Clara.

ay cosas materiales que uno compra que son consideradas en economía como “activos depreciables.” Estos son cualquier objeto con una vida efectiva limitada que su valor se espera que disminuya a medida que se utiliza. Por ejemplo, automóviles y teléfonos celulares.

It’s alarming how much money people spend on assets that lose a good portion of their value within short periods of time. Many people drop $700 on a new phone, even though the artifact won’t be worth half its original value within a year.

You might be thinking, “But I must have the latest features available on my phone or car.” I can understand that. However, by using that ideology, you’ll waste thousands of dollars – especially on purchasing cars, which will immediately drop in value as soon as you drive them off the lot.

Undoubtedly, investing too much on car purchases will hurt you in the long run. Cars are not only costly, but the average person purchases 10 to 15 cars throughout his or her life.

My advice? Stay away from investing too much on cars. It might feel great to celebrate buying a $20,000 car; but the reality is, you’ll lose more than $4,000 the moment you leave the lot.

New cars lose about 20 percent of their value as soon as you take ownership.

But we all need a car, especially in the Kansas City area, where public transportation isn’t reliable and commuting distances are long. However, you can avoid losing thousands of dollars by purchasing a used vehicle instead.

Instead of buying a new car every time you need a vehicle, purchase a two- or three-year-old vehicle and keep it for as long as possible. Remember, with a used car, the original owner has already absorbed the early depreciation. So instead of paying $20,000, you might pay $13,600 – 32 percent less than the original price.

And avoid leasing a vehicle. The only thing worse than buying a new car is leasing a vehicle. Initially, leasing might cost less. But after you make your payments and return the car, you have nothing to show for it.

If improving your finances is your goal, stay away from depreciating assets – phones, cars, and expensive clothes and accessories. Spending your hard-earned money on them isn’t a worthwhile investment.

n 2015, un tribunal dictaminó que los inmigrantes detenidos que esperan la deportación deben tener una audiencia cada seis meses, independientemente de su estado migratorio.

El 27 de febrero, la Corte Suprema de los EE. UU. anuló ese fallo.

El veredicto 5-3 dictaminó que los inmigrantes detenidos por largo tiempo no tienen el derecho de solicitar una audiencia periódica para discutir su liberación y pueden ser retenidos indefinidamente.

On Feb. 27, the U.S. Court overturned that ruling.

The 5-3 verdict ruled that immigrants held in long-term detention don’t have the right to request a periodic hearing to argue their release and can be held indefinitely.

Unsurprisingly, the five votes in favor of this ruling came from the Supreme Court’s five conservative judges, who hold the majority. What makes this ruling more shocking is that the decision applies to any immigrant, including immigrants with legal permanent status or who are seeking asylum.

Associate Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer sharply criticized his colleagues by writing: “We need only recall the words of the Declaration of Independence, in particular its insistence that all men and women have ‘certain unalienable Rights,’ and that among them is the right to ‘Liberty’ (capitalization Breyer).”

In my opinion, this ruling couldn’t have come at a worse time. As Ahilan Arulanantham, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), said in an ACLU press release: “The Trump administration is trying to expand immigration detention to record-breaking levels as part of its crackdown on immigrant communities.”

When you combine this with the fact that many immigrant detainees are help for long periods of time — on average, 13 months – the ruling sets up America for the perfect civil liberties storm. This is especially true when one considers that President Trump’s administration intends to continue ramping up immigration enforcements and detentions nationwide.

Keep in mind that many immigrants are being detained for minor infractions – and although on average they’re detained for 13 months, some are held for longer. In fact, the normal wait time for an illegal immigrant being detained has gone from 198 days to 404, with a ratio of 1,456 cases per judge.

Sadly, because of the recent ruling, that wait time will probably get longer.

03/02/18 El servicio forense y autoridades de Chihuahua investiga varios asesinatos que ocurrieron en dos viviendas del estado de Chihuahua. El hallazgo fue hecho después de que se encontrarán restos humanos dentro de las casas.

En una de las casas se encontró una fosa clandestina con distintos restos humanos. Al día de hoy se siguen investigando los hechos pues se desconoce la identidad de las víctimas, así como las personas que las ejecutaron.

03/05/18 Un tráiler que circulaba en Nuevo León por la carretera a Nuevo Laredo se volcó en la carretera. Según versiones de las autoridades, el conductor no pudo controlar el vehículo. El incidente no dejó personas lesionadas y la carretera estuvo cerrada por varias horas mientras se limpiaba el contenido de la caja del tráiler.

03/03/18 Autoridades de Toluca informaron que una mujer que viajaba en un taxi fue asesinada a tiros. La policía de la ciudad cree que se quería asaltar a la víctima y que al oponer resistencia, sufrió de varios disparos. No se tienen sospechosos del crimen, pero ya se investigan los hechos.

03/04/18 El Reporte del Consejo Ciudadano para la Seguridad Pública y Justicia Penal A.C. de México ubica a Victoria y Reynosa como dos de las ciudades más peligrosas en el mundo. Según este reporte ambas ciudades ubicadas en el estado de Tamaulipas se ubican en el Top 10. En el reporte se investigó a 50 ciudades que tienen varios problemas de crímenes.

03/06/18 El alto índice de robos que azota a Guerrero, provocó que varios padres de familia, y miembros de varias escuelas salieran a manifestarse a las calles para exigir a las autoridades un mejor control. Padres de familia han informado que ha habido múltiples robos en zonas escolares y que están preocupados por los altos índices delictivos, por lo que piden a las autoridades el estar alerta.

03/07/18 La violencia inundó a Guadalajara, Jalisco pues varios cuerpos fueron encontrados desmembrados dentro de un auto en la Colonia Morelos. Según versiones de las autoridades, esta camioneta estaba llena de 8 cadáveres y se desconoce quién pudo haber cometido el crimen. La policía del estado considera que esto puede estar relacionado con el crimen organizado que en los últimos meses ha inundado a la ciudad.

“As teachers we are lovers, not fighters. To ask someone … (in) this capacity to carry a weapon that they may someday have to use against a child that they once thought of as their own is incomprehensible.

“I understand that there is a chance that this could save lives. I am not ignorant to that fact. And as a teacher, it is my job to protect my students at any cost. And I would. This is also a fact. On the flip side, I think about the possibility of a student getting their hands on this weapon – one that could be ‘readily available’ to them in the school itself.

I think about how few students it would take to ambush the teacher carrying (it) and how quickly the situation could turn ugly. It’s responsible for 22 percent of Hispanic deaths. And based on multiple research studies, the American Cancer Society (ACS) reports that Hispanics are less likely than non-Hispanic whites to be diagnosed with the most common cancers, such as lung, colorectal, breast and prostate cancer.

However, similar research studies have shown that Hispanic Americans are more likely to be diagnosed with cancers associated with infectious agents, such as liver, stomach and cervix cancer, than non-Hispanics. For instance, researchers have found that the likelihood of Hispanics having and dying from liver cancer are two times higher than it is for non-Hispanics. Additionally, statistics have shown that Hispanic women, compared to non-Hispanic white women, are twice as likely to have cervical cancer.

Unfortunately, according to multiple studies, Hispanic Americans tend not to get screened for common cancers, such as breast and colorectal cancers, as regularly as non-Hispanic whites. This information is worsened by the fact that, although breast cancer rates are lower in Hispanic women than in other races, breast cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related death in Hispanic women. According to the ACS, Hispanic women are about 20 percent more likely to die of breast cancer than non-Hispanic white women diagnosed at a similar age and cancer stage.

As for men, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among men of all races in the United States. Sadly, though, Hispanic men are more likely to die from prostate cancer than non-Hispanic whites, according to the ACS – possibly because Hispanic men are less likely to receive timely, high-quality treatment.

I encourage all Hispanics to fight cancer by acting on their own health. Many types of cancer can be prevented or treated with regular screenings and early detection. If you don’t have health insurance, contact your local health department to request information on free screening opportunities.

It’s time to change the cancer statistics.

En los pocos diálogos con él descubría en su corazón un gran amor de padre y su preocupación por el prójimo, ahora tendré una gran responsabilidad de concelebrar la Santa Misa en la Parroquia de Holy Cross Overland Park donde será su funeral y dirigir la homilía en español, quiero agradecer a la familia

REYES siempre su amistad y apoyo. Que el Todo Poderoso fortalezca a la familia en estos momentos, ya que creemos en la Resección y en la vida eterna.

Walking in Joaquin’s Shoes En Los Zapatos de JoaquínBy Chara

ARKLAND, Fla. — No hay dolor más grande en la vida que perder a un hijo.

Lo sé porque conocí a Manuel Oliver y Patricia Padauy, los padres de Joaquín Oliver, que el pasado 14 de febrero fue asesinado en su escuela junto a otros 16 estudiantes y maestros.

Me recibieron en su casa, apenas a unos minutos del lugar de la tragedia. Las fotos de Joaquín, con las puntas de su pelo divertidamente pintadas de amarillo, estaban ordenadas en la pared de la sala. La ironía es que la familia se había ido de Venezuela en el 2003 buscando seguridad y ahora, aquí, estaba de luto por su hijo.

Joaquín tenía 17 años de edad. Era generoso, carismático y deportista — jugaba basquetbol — y la noche anterior a su muerte salió con su papá para comprarle flores a su novia. Era una de las muchas complicidades entre los dos, como la vez en que habían tomado su primera cerveza juntos.

Manuel le llamaba Enano a su hijo, aunque ya lo pasaba de altura. ¿Cómo fueron las últimas horas de Joaquín?

Manuel: “A las 6:30 lo levanto ... Me dijo: ‘Me voy a bañar, porque es Valentine’s’ (el 14 de febrero). Agarró su tarjeta, agarró su mochila, agarró sus flores y nos fuimos al colegio.

Llegamos. Tomó sus flores, tomó su mochila y me dijo: ‘Papi, te amo’. Y yo le dije: ‘Me llamas para que me digas cómo te fue.’ Nunca recibí esa llamada”.

Poco después de las 2 de la tarde, Nikolas Cruz entró a la misma escuela donde había sido expulsado, armado con un rifle semiautomático AR-15. A los pocos minutos, los padres y familiares de los más de 3.000 estudiantes comenzaron a recibir mensajes urgentes sobre la masacre que se estaba desarrollando en los salones de clase.

Manuel y Patricia trataron de comunicarse con Joaquín sin ningún éxito. La hermana de Joaquín, Andrea, trató de localizarlo a través de sus conocidos en Facebook, pero nadie sabía de él.

“Pasaron las horas, y pasaban también las esperanzas”, me contó Manuel. “Hasta que te dan la noticia que, hasta cierto punto, la estás imaginando. El FBI concentró a los padres de los niños que no habían aparecido [en un hotel cercano] y al cabo de muchas horas ese grupo de padres se fue reduciendo, porque los niños iban apareciendo. Al final quedó un pequeño grupo, nos llamaron familia por familia, y nos dieron la noticia de que Joaquín había sido una de las víctimas fatales”.

Dos días después se reencontrarían. “Lo volvimos a ver en la funeraria el viernes por la tarde”, me dijo Patricia.

ARKLAND, Fla. — There is no greater pain than the loss of a child. I know this because I recently met with Manuel Oliver and Patricia Padauy, the parents of Joaquin Oliver, who was murdered at his high school on Feb. 14, along with 16 other students and teachers.

I talked with Manuel and Patricia at their home, just a few minutes away from the scene of the shooting. Photos of Joaquin, a smiling

17-year-old with his hair tips dyed blond, decorated the living room walls. The family left Venezuela in 2003 looking for a safer place to live, yet here they were in Florida, mourning their child.

Joaquin was kind, charismatic and sporty; he played basketball. The night before he was killed, he and his dad went out to get some flowers for Joaquin’s girlfriend for Valentine’s Day. He and his dad were close — Joaquin drank his first beer with his dad, and Manuel’s nickname for his son was Shorty, even though Joaquin, at 6 feet 2, was already taller than him.

I asked how Joaquin had spent his last day.

“I woke him up at 6:30. ‘Son, some coffee?’”

Manuel said. “‘No, no, I’m going to shower because it’s Valentine’s Day. I’m going to shower and fix myself up.’ Then he grabbed the flowers, grabbed the Valentine’s Day card, grabbed his backpack, and I took him

Me ha tocado cubrir tantas matanzas en Estados Unidos que, literalmente, ya perdí la cuenta. Por eso mi enorme escepticismo sobre las promesas de los políticos de que algo va a cambiar.

Pero esta vez hay algo distinto. Las víctimas — en este caso, los estudiantes — están diciendo: “Nunca más”. No se han quedado callados.

Están exigiendo un cambio real — ni palabras ni oraciones — y están exponiendo y humillando a todos los políticos que durante años han recibido dinero de la Asociación Nacional del Rifle. Si esta generación es la que se va a hacer cargo del país en el futuro, estamos bien parados. Confío plenamente en ellos.

He hablado con varios sobrevivientes y no había visto esa determinación antes. Es la misma que tienen los padres de Joaquín. “Me ha tocado de cerca, y veo a estos niños que están dispuestos a todo”, me dijo Patricia. “Creo ya que el vaso rebosó”.

Lo retoma Manuel. “Uno como padre lucha

por los hijos en todo momento, y cuando los hijos se van, esa lucha tiene que continuar. Uno tiene que luchar por los hijos hasta que uno se va”.

Y luego me dice cómo. “¿Conoces el dicho ‘ponte en mis zapatos’?” me pregunta. “Ese dicho tiene otra versión. Yo me estoy poniendo en sus zapatos. Ese es nuestro rol ahora. Nos tenemos que poner en los zapatos de estos jóvenes. La lucha es de ellos; nosotros tenemos que estar con ellos”.

Y es en ese instante que me doy cuenta que Manuel lleva puestos los zapatos tenis negros, esos del basquetbol, que dejó su hijo Joaquín.

Sí, los dos calzan la misma talla. Los dos siguen en la lucha.

to school. Then he collected his flowers and his backpack and said, ‘Papi, I love you,’ and I told him, ‘Call me to let me know how it went.’ ... I never received that call.”

That afternoon Nikolas Cruz walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, the school from which he had been expelled, armed with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. A few minutes later, families began to receive emergency messages from some of the more than 3,000 students at the school reporting that a massacre was taking place.

Manuel and Patricia tried unsuccessfully to reach Joaquin. Andrea, Joaquin’s sister, tried to locate him through his Facebook friends, but nobody could find him.

“The hours passed and, of course, so did our hopes” Manuel said. “The FBI gathered all the parents of the kids who were missing [at a nearby hotel], and after many hours that group of parents gradually got smaller as kids were found. Finally there was only a small group left, and they called us one family at a time, and they told us that Joaquin was among the fatalities.”

Two days passed before they saw their son again. “We saw him again at the funeral parlor on Friday evening,” Patricia said.

I’ve actually lost count of the massacres that I’ve reported on in the U.S., so I’m very skeptical when politicians claim after one of these tragedies that things will change. But this time something is different. The students who survived this shooting have refused to remain silent. They are the ones saying Never Again. They are demanding not thoughts and prayers but real change, and they are exposing and humiliating the politicians who have received money from the National Rifle Association through the years.

This generation will be in charge in just a matter of years, so we have a head start.

I trust them completely. I’ve spoken with many people connected with these sorts of tragedies, and I have never seen such a strong sense of resolve.

Joaquin’s parents are also confident in these students. “I’ve seen it from the inside,” Patricia said. “And I see that these kids are determined to do whatever it takes ... I think this was the last straw.”

Manuel agreed. “As a parent, we fight nonstop for our kids, and even when our kids are gone, the fight must go on ... We have to fight for our kids until we are gone too.”

He explained how he will continue fighting for Joaquin and for kids like him. “Do you know the saying, ‘Put yourself in my shoes?’” he asked me. “I am putting myself in his shoes. That’s our role now. ... We have to put ourselves in the shoes of those young people.

It’s their fight, and we must support them.”

I noticed then that Manuel was wearing a pair of black sneakers, basketball shoes that Joaquin had left behind. They both wore the same size. They will both keep on fighting.

03/07/18 Un oficial de policía de Clinton, Mo., murió a causa de un tiroteo que ocurrió el martes por la noche. Dos Mundos staffers remember Manuel Reyes

Los empleados de Dos Mundos recuerdan a Manuel Reyes «Siempre estaba feliz y de buen humor. Nunca olvidaré cómo nos contó la historia de cuando conoció a su esposa (Clara) y cómo la hizo enamorarse de él. Él era el mejor contador de historias».

Manuel Reyes left a legacy that will never die

Manuel Reyes dejó un legado que nunca morirá l pensar en el cofundador de Dos Mundos, hen thinking of Dos Mundos co-founder Manuel Reyes, many things come W Manuel Reyes, se me ocurren muchas cosas: A líder de la comunidad, empresario, luchador, pan de to mind: community leader; entrepreneur; dulce, amigo, alegre, amoroso ser humano.

La lista podría seguir. Aquellos de nosotros que lo conocimos y amamos probablemente no podamos encontrar suficientes palabras para describir a este maravilloso ser humano, que nos dejó el domingo (4 de marzo) a los 79 años y está descansando en un lugar mejor.

Manuel era conocido como «Meño». Muchos de sus amigos, familiares y empleados se hicieron cercanos a Meño, quien saludaba todos los días con una sonrisa. Tenía palabras sinceras pero amables y siempre se centró en ayudar a los demás. Su motivación para seguir adelante con sus sueños era su familia.

Su viaje en la industria de los medios comenzó con su otra mitad, Clara Reyes. En 1981, renunció a su trabajo y empezó una aventura con el amor de su vida, una aventura que continúa porque Manuel dejó un legado que nunca morirá. Él y Clara le han dado voz a la comunidad hispana. El impacto que ha dejado en Kansas City es algo que los medios hispanos y el área de Kansas City en general, deberían reconocer y adoptar.

“Quería que la gente supiera que nosotros (los hispanos) estamos aquí para quedarnos», dijo Clara.

La gente también pensará en Meño como alguien inteligente, que luchó por sus sueños y que quería ver progreso en su comunidad. Meño era ese tipo de persona porque veía a sus amigos y trabajadores como parte de su familia. Solía preocuparse por ellos, como un padre se preocuparía por sus hijos.

Trataba de dar palabras de sabiduría cuando una persona necesitaba consejo, una opinión si había una discusión y palabras de consuelo cuando eran necesarias. Esa alma, ese espíritu siempre estará vivo en nuestros corazones y mentes.

La gente veía a Meño como un hombre humilde, un mentor sabio que cuidaba a los demás. Y como dije antes, lo vieron como alguien que tenía una pasión por su vida y estaba dedicado a mostrar su amor por su esposa y su familia.

Incluso cuando Meño pasó por momentos difíciles, encontró formas de hacer que la vida pareciera más fácil y se mantuvo positivo. Su fuerza y amor lo hacían una persona alegre, lo que podías sentir al estar cerca de él. No importa cuán difícil era la situación, sus palabras fueron alentadoras e inspiraron a las personas con su actitud positiva.

No hay duda de que los empleados, familiares y amigos de Meño siempre lo recordarán como un mentor y amigo, como alguien en quien una persona puede confiar. La comunidad siempre lo tendrá como un líder, un luchador, alguien que siempre usó sus habilidades para dar una voz a los miles de hispanos que viven en el área.

Dos Mundos fue sólo el punto de partida de un sueño que se hizo realidad.

Adiós, Meño, amigo, líder, padre, abuelo, señor.

The list could go on. Those of us who knew and loved him probably can’t find enough words to describe this marvelous human being, who left us on Sunday (March 4) at age 79 and is resting in a better place.

Manuel was well-known as “Meño.” Many of his friends, family members and employees became close to Meño, who greeted everyone every day with a smile. He had candid, but kind words for people and was always focused on helping others. His motivation to keep moving forward with his dreams was his family.

His journey in the media industry started with his other half, Clara Reyes. In 1981, he quit his job and started an adventure with the love of his life – an adventure that continues because Manuel has left a legacy that will never die. He and Clara have given the Hispanic community a voice. The impact he has left in Kansas City is something the Hispanic media – and the Kansas City area in general – should recognize and embrace.

“He wanted people to know that we (Hispanics) were here to stay,” Clara said. “We worked really hard, but he knew that giving a voice to our community was the right thing to do.”

In giving the Hispanic community a voice, Meño became a great leader and someone who was always there to listen to everyone. He was dedicated 100 percent to his family, to his work and to his community. He would love to be remembered that way.

People also will think of Meño as someone who was smart, who fought for his dreams and who wanted to see progress in his community.

Meño was that type of person because he saw his friends and workers as being part of his family. He used to worry about them as a father would worry about his children. He tried to give words of wisdom when a person needed advice, an opinion if there was an argument and words of comfort when they were necessary. That soul, that spirit will always be alive in our hearts and minds.

People saw Meño as a humble man, a wise mentor who looked after others. And as I stated earlier, they saw him as someone who had a passion for his life and was dedicated to showing his love for his wife and family.

Even when Meño went through difficult times, he found ways to make life seem easier and stayed positive. His strength and love made him a cheerful person to be around. No matter how difficult the situation was, his words were uplifting – and he inspired people with his positive outlook.

There’s no doubt that Meño’s employees, family and friends will always remember him as a mentor and friend, as someone a person could trust. The community will always have him as a leader, a fighter, someone who always used his abilities to give a voice to the thousands of Hispanics who live in the area.

Dos Mundos was just the starting point of a dream that became a reality.

Goodbye, Meño, friend, leader, father, abuelo, señor. We will meet again.

Mis empleados y fundadores me dan la posibilidad de apoyar. Para mí, es ser un miembro de la comunidad y devolverles lo que me dieron durante mis años de crecimiento”.

Además de su pasión por la educación, Gutiérrez tiene una pasión por el voluntariado. Es voluntaria durante la Semana Latina en el Consulado de México, para el Departamento de Bomberos de Olathe con el Equipo de Respuesta a Emergencias Comunitarias (CERT), enseñando clases de CERT en el área de Olathe y en The Pregnancy and Pospartum Resource Center. También da presentaciones sobre la seguridad familiar e infantil para la organización benéfica Charlie’s House. Además, es parte de KC BizFest y Olathe Latino Coalition.

Ser presentada en la serie Mujeres del Mes de Dos Mundos para honrar a marzo como el Mes de la Historia de la Mujer hace que Gutiérrez se sienta agradecida y honrada.

“Me siento honrada de saber que fui elegida entre muchas maravillosas mujeres de la comunidad”, dijo.

Aunque Gutiérrez no se considera un modelo a seguir, le gustaría dar algunas palabras de aliento a las latinas. Quiere que “establezcan objetivos para la educación, busquen el desarrollo profesional, estén abiertas para crecer y aprendan a hablar inglés, sean amables, compasivas, generosas y tengan respeto por si mismas y por los demás”.

Gutiérrez también alienta a las latinas a “no competir con otras mujeres, sino a ser una amiga para mostrar aprecio por las demás”. Ella también cree que deberían inspirar a otros, participar en sus escuelas y comunidades, y “recordar siempre trabajar en su autocontrol, autoestima y valorar esa belleza interior que viene de adentro”. Y no deberían verse a sí mismas como víctimas, dijo Gutiérrez.

“Las mujeres deben ser fuertes y buscar educación para ganar el mismo salario”, concluyó. “No porque somos mejores que los hombres, sino porque nos lo merecemos”.

For Gutierrez, education is something that brings knowledge and ensures possibilities.

“I believe education should be a right, not a privilege only for those that can afford it,” she said. “I believe in equal education for those seeking it. Education exposes us to strengths, weaknesses and diversity … (by learning) about those living in our community, by seeing the person, not the color of the (person’s) skin.”

“For that reason, I enjoy working with (the) Olathe schools,” Gutierrez added. “It represents my vison and belief system.”

Gutierrez pursues her “vision” by working with parents on their children’s development in such areas as language, motor skills and problemsolving. Her job also includes being part of the Supporting Care Providers Through Personal Visits program. And it includes being part of the Kansas City Area Parents as Teachers Consortium, which focuses on parents caring for their children at home.

And thanks to her bilingual skills, Gutierrez works with the Hispanic community. She feels blessed to do so.

“I know their quality of life and school readiness will be much richer because of my service to our community,” she said. “However, I am not alone.

My employees and founders make (it) possible for me to serve. For me, it is just giving back to our community (because) of what was given to me during my years of growing up and becoming a community member.”

In addition to her passion for education, Gutierrez has a passion for volunteering. She volunteers during Latina Week at the Mexican Consulate, for the Olathe Fire Department with the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), teaching CERT classes in the Olathe area; and The Pregnancy and Postpartum Resource Center.

She also gives presentations about family and child safety for the charity Charlie’s House. Moreover, she’s part of KC BizFest and the Olathe Latino Coalition.

Being featured in Dos Mundos’ Women of the Month series to honor March as Women’s History Month makes Gutierrez feel grateful and honored.

“I am humbled to learn I was chosen from many wonderful women in the community,” she said.

Although Gutierrez doesn’t consider herself a role model, she would like to give some encouraging words to Latinas. She wants them “to set goals for education, to seek professional development, to be open to grow and to learn to speak English, to be kind, compassionate, generous and have respect for oneself and others.”

Gutierrez also encourages Latinas “not to complete with other women, but to be a friend to show appreciation for others.” She also believes they should inspire others, be involved in their schools and communities, and “always remember to practice self-control, self-worth (and) to cherish that inner beauty that comes from within.”

And they shouldn’t see themselves as victims, Gutierrez said.

“Women must be strong and seek education to earn equal pay,” she concluded. “Not because we are better than men, but because we deserve it.”

He uttered one of my favorite wisecracks many years ago when I was at the old offices on Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City, Mo. I mentioned either that I was getting a haircut or needed a haircut. Manuel quipped: ‘Hey, Shawn, don’t just get one hair cut. Get them all cut.’ I told that joke to my mom, who thought highly of him. She loved it. She and I regularly made references to it when I was about to go get my hair – or rather, hairs – trimmed.

“In keeping with that jovial nature, Manuel produced a sense of calmness around him. I felt comfortable talking with him. As someone who’s mildly autistic, it’s generally difficult for me to chitchat. But with him, it was easy. And obviously, he felt comfortable talking with me.

That was clear not only by the way we could kid around, but also by him telling me that he treated me like I was one of his own kids.

“Farewell, Manuel. I’ll think of you and smile whenever I get a haircut. And I won’t just get one hair cut. I’ll get them all cut.”

Not once did I see him upset or in a bad mood.

He was just so positive. He was a very, very sweet man.

“He would go out of his way to say, ‘Hi,’ send birthday wishes, ask about my family. And if he didn’t see me at the office, he would send an email or message, but he was always in touch.

“He loved taking pictures of us at the office and outside, even if we weren’t posing! And then, he would email some to the whole office!

He left us so many nice and funny memories, like when I’d catch him eating candy after the doctors had ordered him not to.... He’d put his finger over his mouth and reply, ‘Shhh.

Don’t say anything.’ I’d just laugh and say, ‘O.K.’ I will always remember how he would call out my name when I’d walk into the office: “Mariaaaa!” And with a big smile!

The Israeli consulate is determined to build bridges with America’s Hispanic community.

The consulate believes that, considering the Latino growth in the United States, it’s in the consulate’s best interests to get Latinos involved and familiarized with the Jewish state.

Dayan believes that, as America’s demographic shifts, Latinos will have even greater potential to support the Jewish state. As America’s demographic shifts, so does the country’s strategies, he explained to The Post.

“This, in turn, means we have to recognize some areas as strategically important – and in the coming years, this includes the Hispanic communities,” Dayan said. “We see their rise, how they are going to be the demographic plurality in the U.S. in the future.”

The consul-general also stated that he believes that “in order for the Latino community to fulfill its true potential of leadership in this country, they have to be involved in every aspect of American political life, including, for instance, foreign relations – and not only with Latin America, but in the world.”

Dayan isn’t the only representative of Israel reaching out to the Hispanic community. Israel advocacy groups such as StandWithUs have made independent efforts to create new fellowship programs aimed at Latino churches and students.

Overall, Israel continues to receive support from most Americans. However, based on the hostility shown toward the Jewish state by the Trump administration, other Jewish organizations are worried about their future.

We should be prepared to use our strong, collective voice to speak up for them.

Colman Domingo, quien da vida al personaje de Strand, habló recientemente con Dos Mundos sobre su carrera y esta temporada de la serie.

Dos Mundos: ¿Cómo te involucraste en la actuación?

Colman Domingo: Empecé a actuar muy tarde.

of the AMC TV drama about families uniting to survive an apocalypse will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on March 13.

Colman Domingo, who gives life to the character Strand, recently talked to Dos Mundos about his career and this season of the series.

Dos Mundos: How did you get into acting?

Colman Domingo: I got into acting very late. I was 19 years old when I took a course in college – and that … opened the … gates up to being a storyteller. Then, I moved to San Francisco (and) became a professional actor. So I have been acting now for 25 years.

DM: How did you get your role in “Fear the Walking Dead”?

CD: I submitted a self-tape.

I did the self-tape in my living room. I got a small part of the script and I recorded it in my living room. From there, it was a quick turnaround … (of) maybe less than a week when I received an offer. So apparently, something I did in my living room resonated with them.

DM: What do you like most about your character?

CD: When you think you know him, he will pull a rock underneath you. I think that is how he gets his power as well. I think that is how he stays ahead of the game. I like that he is a deeply feeling human being and there are moments of passion and humanity.

DM: Why do you think people need to watch Season 3 of “Fear the Walking Dead”?

CD: People need to watch it because it is the best season yet. I am very proud of the work we have done all season. It really becomes less television and more an epic zone. It is big.

DM: Send a message to people in Kansas City: CD: Hey, Kansas City! I hope you join us for Season 3 on DVD (and Blu-ray), and we look forward to having you.

Cinematográficas que tuvo para fomentar la inclusión de personalidades latinas que partieron de sus países de origen para cumplir el sueño americano.

“Coco” logró ganar como mejor película animada, hecho que también fue celebrado por toda la comunidad, ya que la película logró cautivar al público y mostró lo que significa El día de Muertos y el folkore mexicano.

“La forma del agua”, de Guillermo del Toro, fue la gran ganadora de la premiación, con lo que el director tapatío se suma a Alejandro González Iñarritu y Alfonso Cuarón como los grandes directores mexicanos que ganan el tan ansiado Oscar.

También entr e las ganadoras se esa noche está la Mejor Película de Habla no Inglesa del 2018 a la cinta chilena “Una chica fantástica” del director Sebastián Lelio, quien en su discurso agradeció a su equipo de trabajo y a su protagonista Daniela de la Vega por su entrega. ienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca elcome tourists, in this edition we have to B hablar de la popular ciudad de San Francisco, W talk about the popular city of San FranCalifornia. Ciudad que fue colonizada por los cisco, California. The city that was colonized by españoles a comienzos del siglo XVI aunque poblada por las tribus Ohlone desde por lo menos 1,000 años antes. Nombrada así en honor a San Francisco de Asís.

Perteneció a México hasta 1846 cuando en la guerra entre México y Estados Unidos fue cedida junto a todo California y a otros estados que ahora pertenecen al territorio estadounidense.

Es de destacar que fue cuna del movimiento hippie en los años 60, y además del activismo por los derechos del orgullo gay en los años 70.

Podrás encontrar vuelos sin escala desde $150 saliendo de Kansas. En cuanto a hospedaje te recomiendo que te quedes dentro del Downtown, ya que es el lugar más práctico para desplazarte por toda la ciudad y además es donde hay mayor oferta hotelera, por lo que será la zona más económica y fácil de encontrar hotel. El costo promedio por noche es de $120.

Ahora la Isla de Alcatraz pertenece al Parque Nacional Golden Gate y puedes visitarla por ferry desde el muelle 33, conoce lo que fue una de las prisiones más famosas de todos los tiempos, con audio guía disponible en inglés y español, podrás conocer sus diminutas celdas, el comedor, la biblioteca, incluso las celdas de castigo, contando en cada uno de estos puntos variadas historias de los presos que estuvieron ahí.

El Puente Golden Gate, uno de los puentes más icónicos de todo Estados Unidos, se encuentra a una altura de 227 metros, y de 1.3 millas de largo, con 3 carriles de cada lado, además cuenta con carriles protegidos de cada lado para peatones y ciclistas, sin duda una nueva perspectiva tendrás después de haber atravesado tan imponente estructura roja de metal.

El Parque Nacional Golden Gate, aprovechando tu travesía por el puente Golden Gate, ya que se encuentra a un lado, no podrás perderte de un inmenso espacio verde rodeado de lagos y lagunas, un parque que en proporciones es considerablemente más grande que el Central Park de Nueva York, con una extensión de

Pasea por algunos de los principales barrios de la ciudad sobre los emblemáticos Tranvías con más de 140 años de historia y tradición, sin duda algo imperdible al conocer la ciudad, ya que es la única ciudad en EE.UU. que aún cuenta con este tipo de Tranvías jalados por cables. No olvides tomarte fotos en él mientras subes y bajas por sus empinadas colinas apreciando la belleza de sus edificaciones al estilo victoriano. The agency claims Conway did so during two TV interviews – the first for Fox News, the second for CNN – by stumping for Republican Roy Moore in his unsuccessful campaign to represent Alabama in the U.S. Senate. Under the Hatch Act, federal government employees – and local and state employees working in programs that receive federal funds – can’t influence or attempt to influence election outcomes.

Club drops MLS opener to New York City FC

The wait is over.

On Sunday (March 4), Sporting Kansas City opened its latest MLS campaign. The club’s 2-0 loss to New York City FC at Children’s Mercy Park was the first of 34 regular-season league games for Sporting.

Sporting manager and technical director Peter Vermes, and Sporting defenders Ike Opara and Matt Besler discussed their eagerness to start the season when they met with reporters on Media Day on March 2 at Pinnacle – the club’s new training facility.

“You want to get into that rhythm and that routine of starting to play … at home and training, travel – all those different things that go along with it,” Vermes said during a press conference that also featured Besler. “And it’s about getting that first game up and going.”

Besler – a Kansas City area native who has played for the franchise since 2009, when it was called the Kansas City Wizards – suggested the season opener would provide a fresh start for Sporting.

“When we got knocked out of the (MLS Cup) playoffs last year, we’ve been thinking about it (2018 season) ever since,” he said.

Opara, who won the 2017 MLS Defender of the Year Award, felt that team’s eagerness to play games that count was evident during its Media Day training session. With the opener approaching, players were “starting to really … get antsy,” Opara said. Thus, they took a few minutes “to relax at the end of a pretty hyperfocused and good training session,” he stated.

“Guys are ready to go,” Opara commented.

“And it’s exciting to see. This is always the fun time of the year.”

Vermes, Besler, Opara and the rest of the Sporting crew will soon begin their routine of traveling for MLS games. The club will face Chicago at 5 p.m. this Saturday (March 10) at Toyota Park.
