As an 18-year-old working for an area company, Aguilar discovered an interest in window cleaning that led to furthering his career in the trade. At age 20, he set off to start his own business, Empire Window Cleaning. To promote his business, Aguilar began handing out flyers in the area. It soon proved successful after acquiring some referrals. “When you’re that young, you don’t really think too far out, but I was blessed to have people around me that were seeing what I was doing within my industry,” Aguilar recalled. “I was able to meet other window cleaners that were far ahead of what I was

According to UNICEF on the UNICEF USA website, about 360,000 adolescents are projected to die of AIDS-related diseases through 2030. Projections also show that at the current rate, without an acceleration of efforts and investment in HIV prevention and treatment efforts, 1.5 million adolescents could become newly infected with HIV through 2030. Of those infected, around 56,000 adolescents could die of AIDS-related diseases annually – 76 deaths per day. The data also suggests the number of infections and deaths are likely because adolescents outside the United States and other industrialized countries have been left behind in HIV prevention outreach efforts.

After showing Maduro images of Venezuelans eating out of the trash to demonstrate the humanitarian crisis, Maduro got up and one of his ministers came to tell them the interview was not authorized, with the equipment to be confiscated, Ramos recalled. “They took our cameras, kept our interview material and took all of our cellular phones,” he said. Ramos’ phone was returned. Everything was deleted from it. The Guardian reported that Maduro has been accused of regularly detaining journalists. Recently, he also has blocked attempts to deliver humanitarian aid to Venezuela from the United States and other countries. Venezuela is experiencing a deepening humanitarian crisis as Maduro tenuously holds onto power. In late January, Juan Guaido declared himself interim president of Venezuela and has been recognized as the legitimate leader of Venezuela by many countries, including the United States.

He gives special credit to the Kansas City Kansas (KCK) Chamber of Commerce for its role in helping Aguilar form relationships and increase awareness of Empire across the local area. “I’ve been going to conventions for window cleaning and power washing since 2006, so I’ve met a lot of window cleaners throughout the country that (have become) my friends,” he said. “Going nationwide was fairly easy because I already had those deep connections.” Finding a niche in the industry has helped Empire, too. “What we specialize in is providing our services to other window cleaners who do not do what we do,” Aguilar said. “It’s a specialized trade – being up on ropes and hanging off of buildings. So we empower other businesses to do better in their cities.” Empire can service buildings that are up to 44-stories high. “We bring so much to the table,” Aguilar said. “We get certifications for everything! We’ve got Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) 10, International Window Cleaning Association (IWCA) certifications, CPR, different types of power washing certifications (and) high rise certifications.” Aguilar attributes Empire’s continuing success to observing, learning and being dedicated to establishing a reliable, high-quality windowcleaning company. “The way that I see it is, (a business) needs attention – just like a little kid does,” he said. “It’s all about how hungry you really are, how hungry are you to succeed and what are you willing to give up to be able to get to your goals.” To learn more about Empire Highrise USA, visit empirehighrise.com.

of complex problems that defy rigid, one-sizefits-all solutions. It’s a crisis that seemingly intensifies and escalates almost daily. On Tuesday, shocking news broke that 4,556 children reported being sexually assaulted while in the care of the U.S. Health and Human Services’Office of Refugee Resettlement. Other minors in U.S. custody were responsible for most of the alleged assaults; 178 were carried out by staff, USA Today reported. Allegations go back to the Obama administration in 2015. Cdr. Jonathan White, who’s overseen the care of migrant children at HHS, told members of the House Judiciary Committee investigating the allegations that the accused staff members weren’t HHS personnel. They were associated with local shelters that HHS contracts with to house and care for the children. Those facilities, White told Congress, are inspected by state child welfare officials. The Judiciary Committee on Tuesday held hearings on the allegations, and the House Oversight and Reform Committee voted to authorize subpoenas requiring federal officials to turn over records on migrant children and parents who were separated at the U.S.-Mexico border. The Committee is demanding the ages and native countries of the separated children, where they’re being held and details about their conditions, and the status of the parents’ cases. Last Thursday, multiple national media outlets reported that upwards of 245 migrant children have been separated from their parents caught crossing the border illegally since President Trump formally ended the practice in June 2018. The separations were carried out because of “criminality, prosecution, gang affiliation or other law enforcement purpose,” federal officials told the ACLU, which filed a lawsuit last year. The ACLU wants the government to identify many more migrant families separated from their children at the border and reunite them. U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw heard arguments last Thursday and is expected to rule very soon. At issue are the families who were separated between July 2017 and June 26, 2018 when the court ordered the Trump administration to end the family separation policy. Migrant children falling prey to commercial sexual and labor exploitation present further risks that must be addressed at the border. Children account for three in every five of human trafficking in Central America, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. What’s happening, the ACLU claims, is that Homeland Security doesn’t make concessions for anyone other than a parent or legal guardian when separating children and adults at the border. The government is doing separations unilaterally without any process to contest the separations and without child welfare oversight. They cited a recent example. An 11-year-old boy from Guatemala was separated from his uncle, his only living relative. The boy’s parents had died without formalizing custody arrangements. The migrant children aren’t responsible for the adults, whether they’re parents, guardians, relatives or traffickers who brought them to our border. It’s imperative that we secure our borders and control who we admit without further punishing the children who have suffered enough at the hands of adults.

A statement from a conversation between a detained man and a field officer working with the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) was released in a story posted Feb. 19 by The Daily Beast online. “They have us locked up as prisoners,” said the Central American man. “This cold (weather) is tremendous, and the real truth is that there are children, there are sick people, there are seniors, and … we’re in an abandoned factory.” The detainees include 1,600 people who arrived on Feb. 4 as part of a migrant caravan that got intercepted at the Mexican border and taken to the abandoned factory. There are approximately 400 other migrants seeking asylum. More than half the people detained in the facility are children and women. Authorities in Mexico are slowly offering one-year humanitarian visas to the migrants. But because of hostilities toward the migrants in Piedras Negras, their visas end up being ripped apart by the police, resulting in them returning to the shelters. Once the shelter closes, authorities reportedly do not have a plan on how they will deal with the 2,000 or so migrants. The massive backlog of asylum cases could result in them having to wait in Piedras Negras for years. To complicate matters, the RAICES officer claimed in The Daily Beast story that neither Mexican authorities nor immigrants know how they should apply for asylum because no one has explained how the asylum process works. “The process is extremely opaque,” the officer said.

If you have a social security number, you can register online quickly at the Selective Service website – www.sss.gov. If not, you can register on paper by mailing in the application. If you apply for permanent residence based on adjustment of status (process inside the US), you are automatically registered. It is important to register because it can count against good moral character for US citizenship. Financial aid for college is also affected by failing to register. If you have not done so and you are not yet 26 years old, you should register now. If you are over 26 years old and you did not register, you should talk to an immigration attorney about how it will affect your citizenship application. Even women may need to register in the future. This week, a federal court said that it is unconstitutional to only require men to register since women can now serve in the armed forces as well. Nothing has changed yet and it is under a review process that should take at least a year. NN reported Tuesday (Jan. 22) that a Washington, D.C.-based law firm, the C Legal Aid Justice Center and the Southern

Poverty Law Center have filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of 10,000-plus detained immigrant children. The news agency also reported that the suit, which was filed Jan. 18 in a federal court in Virginia, was set for a Feb. 15 hearing. The lawsuit is being filed amid a national conversation about the treatment of undocumented immigrants at detention facilities, particularly children. Undocumented immigrants who are being detained are suffering various forms of abuse, according to several reports from advocacy organizations. The abuse reportedly includes delayed or denied access to physical and mental health care, poor hygienic conditions, inedible flood, and verbal and physical abuse. More than 200 complaints of abuse have been filed against immigrant facilities since 2015. Moreover, some government agencies have taken issue with how detained immigrants are being treated. As multiple news reported, for example, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General recently released a report regarding the separation of undocumented children from their parents. But some government agencies have argued that undocumented immigrants are not being mistreated. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Management & Training Corp. (MTC), a company that contracts with the federal government to run detention centers, have argued that the MTC’s detention centers not only meet, but exceed ICE standards. Many advocacy organizations are not waiting for ICE or the detention centers to change. Instead, they are pushing to replace immigrant detention centers with community-based programs that would employ caseworkers and service providers to assist immigrants. Anyone who wants to help detained immigrants is advised to do the following: *Volunteer with an advocacy organization: Organizations are regularly seeking volunteers to manage legal intake and interviews. To show support and raise mental health awareness, this part of the series examines teens and how social media impacts their mental health. Research has shown that being connected through social media is a big part of teens’ lives. Their usage can offer them positive experiences online. However, the misuse of social media can harm their mental health. Some of the most common ways that social media usage affects teen mental health include the following: *Loneliness: Social media interactions temporarily relieve feelings of loneliness, but they do not build strong, meaningful relationships. Rather, social media notifications offer only instant gratification that elicits superficial feelings of connection. Establishing online relationships should never dominate a teen’s social interaction time. Encourage teens to use social media only as a tool to improve their offline relationships, rather than as their only means of social interaction. *Fear of Missing Out syndrome (FOMO): FOMO syndrome is becoming a big problem because of the multiple choices teens are offered through social media. As the name suggests, FOMO syndrome makes teens feel inferior because they feel like they could always be doing something better than what they are doing. Parents and other adults should talk to teens about the importance of appreciating what is happening, even if it is happening to someone else. They also should remind teens that valuable experiences come in many forms. *Self-perception issues: Studies have shown that social media can lead to anxiety and depression. Prolonged use of social media also has been linked to low self-esteem. This comes in part from the pressure teens feel to respond quickly online and maintain a “perfect” image. Whenever they log on to a social platform, they find themselves comparing their regular lives to the best versions of others’ lives, sparking jealousy and envy. Talk to teens about the importance of being grateful about how real, offline life is going. Constantly remind them that they are good people and encourage them to limit their time on the platforms. *Cyberbullying: Alas, social media has become a place for bullies to disseminate violent, hurtful, humiliating words and images. Research shows that cyberbullying has many negative consequences in teens’ offline lives, including alcohol and drug abuse, poor grades, low self-esteem and, in extreme cases, suicide. Keep open communication with teens about what they are doing online. If they are suffering from cyberbullying, offer your support. *Sleep deprivation: Social media usage often causes teens to go to sleep later than they should – and sleep less than they should. Many teens lose sleep from waking up in the middle of the night and then logging on to social media. Avoid letting your teen go to sleep with a cellphone nearby. And set a social media curfew.

a presidencia de Andrés Manuel López Obrador en México comenzó de prisa y dando la cara. Y esto ya es un cambio. Se nota que llevaba más de 12 años preparándose para este momento. No tiene dudas — al menos en público — del rumbo a seguir. El primer cambio es obvio y visible: Casi todos los días, a las 7 de la mañana, en su conferencia de prensa (“la mañanera”) AMLO da la cara y explica lo que está haciendo. Sí, se tarda en dar sus respuestas — “no hablo de corridito”, me dijo alguna vez — pero no sé de ningún periodista que no le haya podido hacer una pregunta. Yes, it takes him some time to answer questions (“I don’t speak fast,” he once told me), but I haven’t heard of a journalist not being allowed to ask him something. The contrast to former President Enrique Peña Nieto — who never dared to hold a news conference that included open questioning — is huge. These morning sessions are a welcome breath of fresh air. I wonder if AMLO will be able to remain as open to the public as he is now for the remainder of his six-year term. A president’s tolerance for being challenged is inversely proportional to the time he has spent in office. And already he gets upset sometimes, as when he dismisses his media critics by calling them “fifí” (“snobbish”). In any case, the primary duty of journalists is to confront those in power,

Decía el premio Nobel, Elie Wiesel, que “la neutralidad ayuda al opresor, nunca a la víctima”. Seguir reconociendo al dictador Maduro como Presidente legítimo — escudándose en la Doctrina Estrada (establecida en 1930) — es una falla ética y diplomática, y una falta de solidaridad con el pueblo venezolano. Así veo las cosas. AMLO avanza, México está cambiando y nadie dice extrañar a Peña Nieto. Estamos en otros tiempos.

and López Obrador is in power now. The new president has repeated his message — “We must put an end to corruption” — so many times it would be difficult to find a single Mexican who hasn’t heard it. AMLO has certainly set a good example by flying economy class, putting the government’s fleet of jets up for sale and opening up Los Pinos, the famously luxurious presidential residence, to the public. Populist? Yes, but consistent nonetheless. AMLO has also required that his Cabinet members declare their assets, the first time they have been called upon to do so in Mexican history. This is a wise way to root out corruption, since an official whose wealth seems to dramatically increase will have to answer to a public who knows how much money the person had at the beginning of AMLO’s term. López Obrador has been so eager to get things done that he even organized a public referendum on the construction of a new airport in Mexico City before his inauguration, and without a reliable vote-counting system in place. And yes, “huachicol” (“fuel theft”) is a national disgrace. But AMLO has moved so fast to fight it that he’s only produced new problems: The decision to transport fuel by tanker trucks instead of pipelines, which are so vulnerable to thieves, resulted in dire fuel shortages. AMLO understands the power of symbolic gestures and straightforward rhetoric. And he uses these tools wisely, whether he’s discussing the “Fourth Transformation” (his campaign slogan), the “Mayan Train” (a 930-mile train line stretching across the country’s southeast), or just talking up the subsidies he has promised to millions of senior citizens. The AMLO honeymoon is in full swing. Voters have no regrets; López Obrador would likely win again if another election were held today. The president wields an army of outraged digital volunteers ready to fight anyone who dares criticize their leader online. This is a president with particularly faithful supporters. But watch out, because hard times are ahead. Even though López Obrador has decided to end the war against drug lords, Mexicans are still being killed. Impunity prevails. And if the creation of AMLO’s new crime-fighting National Guard results in a more militarized country, there will be even more deaths. He will lose the benefit of the doubt granted to new presidents if dead bodies start piling up by the thousands in official statistics. As for his foreign policy, López Obrador has managed to keep President Donald Trump at bay. AMLO largely ignores the bully to the north, while Trump himself, under siege at home, turns his attention elsewhere. For now. AMLO’s reluctance to condemn the brutal dictatorship in Venezuela is, I think, a profound error. Standing up to Nicolás Maduro’s fraud and his human rights violations is by no means the same thing as backing a potential military invasion or supporting Trump. As the Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel said, “Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.” Recognizing Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate president — and hiding behind the 1930 Estrada Doctrine, which forbids meddling in other countries, as an excuse — is an ethical and diplomatic mistake, and reveals a complete lack of solidarity with the Venezuelan people. AMLO is moving forward, Mexico is changing and nobody seems to miss Peña Nieto. Times have changed.

ecently, Benton Stevens, a boy from Texas, set up a hot chocolate stand to raise money for President Trump’s U.S.Mexico border wall. After reading about what this 7-year-old had done, I realized the boy had thought of this idea after watching Trump’s State of the Union Address – and that his parents had supported his idea to do it. That led me to ask myself this question: What are we adults teaching our kids, particularly our president? Trump’s speech is full of hate and discrimination. Many of his followers believe he wants to protect the United States; but if he wants to protect the country, he will explore measures other than building an unnecessary wall that will not stop crime, as he claims. His wall will be costly and only escalate tensions between Mexico and the United States. Do we adults want that? No. And children such as Benton Stevens should not either. Stevens has been quoted by multiple media outlets as saying that Trump is protecting America and that the wall will protect Americans from illegal immigrants. But does Stevens know who illegal immigrants are and why they come here? Probably not. Chances are, Stevens is an impressionable kid who believes what Trump says in his speeches about illegal immigrants. According to President Trump, undocumented immigrants are criminals who come the country to commit crimes. But the reality is different. Many undocumented immigrants pay taxes, generate employment and work hard. Their only crime is, most of the time, they overstay their visas or cross the border illegally because they want better lives for themselves and their families. Yes, they are breaking the law when they do those things, but they do not intend to commit crimes. Adults need to help kids like Benton Stevens understand that. After reading that Benton Stevens wants to hand his money to the president and that his parents supported his idea of setting up his hot chocolate stand, instead of talking to him and teaching him about respect for others, I feel sad. Clearly, we need to start teaching our kids better. We need to help them understand why respect is important. ienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de un hermoso puerto de nuestro país vecino México, que por muchos años fue un pequeño pueblo de pescadores pero por la belleza del mismo se ha convertido en uno de los principales centros turísticos del estado de Oaxaca, nos referimos a Puerto Escondido, México. Cuenta con una muy pequeña población de poco menos de 50 mil habitantes. Existen diversos factores por los que este puerto ha pasado de ser un simple pueblo de pescadores a convertirse en la ciudad más poblada de la costa oaxaqueña, entre los más destacables se encuentran la belleza de sus playas, la diversidad de especies de flora y fauna, sumado a la diversidad de actividades ecoturísticas que puedes realizar ahí.

Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a Puerto Escondido tienen un costo promedio de $700 y en su gran mayoría cuentan con al menos 2 escalas. La mejor forma de moverse por la ciudad es a pie, pero el traslado para conocer las distintas playas se recomienda hacer en automóvil o bien en alguna de las rutas de autobuses que ofrecen estos servicios. El hospedaje es bastante económico comparado con el de otros puertos, encontrando habitaciones desde $20 por noche en hoteles 3 estrellas y desde $120 en hoteles 5 estrellas. Con este título, el City está a dos de igualar al Liverpool, quien es el que más Copas de la Liga ha ganado hasta ahora. Guardiola sumó su cuarto título con los ‘Citizens’ y el 25 en toda su carrera como entrenador. Entre sus palmarés están 3 de La Liga, 3 de Bundesliga, 1 Premier League, 3 Mundial de Clubes y 2 Champions League. El City consiguió el primero de cuatro títulos en los que está compitiendo esta temporada. Les queda la Champions League, la Premier League y la FA Cup.
