Mundos president and editor, attributes the paper’s success in a world that is increasingly leaning toward digital content to its ability to continue pursuing its mission through the years. “What we try to do is to give (the community) information they need, give them advice — … not so much the news, but the news that impacts our community,” she said. Ed Reyes, senior operations advisor and Clara Reyes’ son, agreed. He said the mission to divulge the Hispanic culture in both languages will not change, regardless of the platform the newspaper utilizes. “That’s what really helps us survive,” Ed Reyes said. “We’re not in it for the dollar as much (yes, we need it to survive), but I think the motivation is genuine.” Dos Mundos has helped bridge communities and helped them understand one another, Ed Reyes said, by being bilingual. It was a consideration to switch from hard copy to digital, said Diana Reyes Raymer, Clara Reyes’ daughter, who serves as general and sales manager. Ultimately, that did not happen because the paper found out a way to keep costs down by combining the newspaper with the radio stations operated by Reyes Media Group. “Our niche is the Hispanic focus, the local focus, and (our focus is) being able to connect with both the listenership (through the radio) and the readership,” Reyes Raymer said. Instead of replacing the hard copy version with a digital one, Dos Mundos added digital components — a website and social media accounts — to complement the print editions of the paper. Reyes Raymer said print newspapers are not going anywhere because people in the community enjoy being featured in them and seeing newspapers in tangible form. There is a sense of ownership and connection that comes with having a print copy of the newspaper, Clara Reyes said. “It’s about being connected to the community,” she said. That will continue to be Dos Mundos’ motto.

We don’t have a choice – and honestly, I don’t think these types of actions will stop people … (from) coming to the United States. I ask everyone to understand. We just want to have a better life.”

arlier this month, Congress approved legislation that would offer “permanence and stability” to an estimated 2.5 million undocumented young immigrants residing in the United States. In a 237-187 vote on June 4 largely along party lines, representatives passed the American Dream and Promise Act of 2019 (H.R. 6). The bill would protect “Dreamers,” foreign nationals who entered the country before age 18; TPS (Temporary Protected Status) recipients; and DED (Deferred Enforced Departure) recipients. Most are working and or studying, but their protected status is temporary, dependent on pending court rulings. If adopted, H.R. 6 would provide permanent legal status and ultimately a path to citizenship for qualifying Dreamers and TPS and DED recipients. The bill went to the Senate on June 5 but its passage in the Republican-controlled Senate is unlikely. There was immediate pushback against it. Opposition lawmakers claim it “threatens public safety by making illegal immigrants engaged in gang activity and individuals with multiple criminal convictions eligible for permanent residency status and a pathway to citizenship.” But a Washington Post fact check refutes their claims. In a concise, point-by-point article it published June 17, The Post wrote, “H.R. 6 ended up with various measures that exclude people who have broken the law.” Recent polling shows there’s widespread and growing support for Dreamers and immigrants granted humanitarian protections. And multiple

agencies and organizations are studying various social and economic impacts of adopting H.R. 6. Analyzing data from the 2012-2016 five-year American Community Survey microdata, two organizations provide an in-depth look at immigrants eligible for protection under H.R. 6. The Center for American Progress with the Dornsife Center at the University of Southern California offer national and state-specific fact sheets. The U.S. is home to 2,506,800 immigrants eligible for protection under H.R. 6; 13,600 reside in Kansas, 11,300 in Missouri. Nationwide, they own 215,400 houses and pay $2,506,800,000 in annual mortgage payments; they generate $75,382.900,000 in spending power annually and contribute $17,380,900,000 in federal taxes and $9,690,100,000 in state and local taxes. He distinguished himself from Justus by emphasizing his personal story. During the campaign’s final weeks, Justus and her supporters ran ads attacking Lucas. He vowed not to do the same. In his victory speech, Lucas also promised to fight for working men and women, and for safer streets. “In our Kansas City, we believe that whatever has happened in your past does not dictate your future,” he said.

The situation is complicated for current TPS holders. Two court cases are keeping TPS alive while it is pending. For Sudanese, Nicaraguan, Haitian, and Salvadoran recipients, their status (and work authorization) has been extended until January 2, 2020. For Nepali recipients, their status has been extended to March 24, 2020. We expect news regarding Honduran recipients in November of 2019 as their current cards are still valid until January 5, 2020. The court has required that the government automatically extend the TPS program for six months at a time while the lawsuit is pending. No new cards will be issued to TPS holders to show they are in status. Instead, they can show their employer and others such as the driver’s license office a copy of the “Federal Register” where the automatic extension is printed. Men ages 45-64 and ethnic minorities, including blacks and Hispanics, had the highest proportion of diet-associated cancer burden compared with other groups. The study could not shed light on how the link between diet and cancer risk changes with age. “Diet is among the few modifiable risk factors for cancer prevention,” Zhang told CNN. “These findings underscore the needs for reducing cancer burden and disparities in the U.S. by improving the intake of key food groups and nutrients.”

MIAMI — No importa lo que hagan los Presidentes de México y Estados Unidos, los inmigrantes centroamericanos seguirán huyendo de sus países hacia el norte. Es muy poderoso lo que los empuja a emigrar de Honduras, El Salvador y Guatemala: violencia brutal, pobreza extrema y cambio climático. Y es muy atractivo lo que buscan: la posibilidad de vivir en el país más rico del mundo. El nuevo muro Donald Trump-Andrés Manuel López Obrador no los podrá detener. “De morir en Honduras, mejor morir en otro país”, me dijo en Tapachula, México, un padre que empujaba en una carriola a una niña de 1 año. MIAMI — Central Americans will continue to flee their homes and head north no matter what sort of agreements the presidents of Mexico and the United States come to. Powerful forces — brutal violence, extreme poverty, the effects of climate change — are driving these men, women and children to leave. They are also being motivated to go north by the hope that they might live in the world’s wealthiest country. Simply put, the new wall that President Trump and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador are putting up in the form of an immigration agreement isn’t going to stop them. Last October when I was in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, I met a man in the city of Tapachula. “I was going to die in Honduras

anyway,” he told me. “I’d rather take my chances and die in another country.” He was pushing a trolley that held his 1-year-old daughter. They were traveling with a caravan of roughly 7,000 Central Americans heading north through Mexico. I also met an 11-year-old girl from Honduras. She remained silent when I asked her about the gangs back home. (You can watch video of my conversations with these immigrants here.) It’s not hard to understand why they want to leave their homes. “Violent crime is rampant in Honduras,” says Human Rights Watch’s World Report 2019. “Despite a downward trend in recent years, the murder rate remains among the highest in the world.” If your teenage son was being pressured to join a gang, or if your daughter faced threats of rape, what would you do? El Salvador also has one of the world’s highest homicide rates, which is creating a drag on the economy. According to the World Bank, “crime and violence [in El Salvador] make doing business more expensive, negatively affect investment decisions and hinder job creation.” As for Guatemala, in addition to the economic

The headline of a recent New York Times column by Nicholas Kristof, written from Guatemala, says it all: “Food Doesn’t Grow Here Anymore. That’s Why I Would Send My Son North.” Facing dying crops, tens of thousands of Guatemalans have left their homes to make the journey to the United States. Many more will follow. The Mexico-Guatemala border has always been open to travelers. Last year I crossed the Suchiate River, which forms a natural border between the two countries, without anyone asking for my passport. But all that may be about to change. The recently formed Mexican National Guard is still just an experiment and has yet to prove its effectiveness. And yet, as directed by Mr. Trump and Mr. López Obrador’s immigration deal, 6,000 of its agents will soon be deployed to the country’s southern border to make it harder for Central Americans to cross into Mexican territory. In addition, Mexico has publicly agreed to serve as a “waiting room” for the United States. That means that thousands of Central American asylum seekers have to wait in Mexican cities, possibly for months or even years, while their claims are being processed. Mexico is doing what President Trump wants: serving as his immigration police force. But the Mexican National Guard should be focusing on fighting crime at home, not on stopping harmless Central Americans from reaching the United States — particularly when 14,000 Mexicans have been murdered since AMLO (as President López Obrador is known) took office. Among those killed was the journalist Norma Sarabia. She was gunned down this past week outside her home in the state of Tabasco, the sixth reporter murdered in Mexico this year. Stopping this violence should be AMLO’s No. 1 priority. Instead, Mexico is diverting huge sums of money to do President Trump’s dirty work. I am happy, as all Mexicans are, that the United States has decided not to impose tariffs on Mexican products, which could have derailed the new United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. On the other hand, I am heartbroken that Mexico has given in to Mr. Trump’s demands. I’m sure that more demands will follow. Mr. López Obrador recently said that Mexico “will stick to a no-confrontation policy” with Mr. Trump. Unfortunately, Mr. Trump isn’t abiding by the same policy. The American president is a bully, and now he knows that Mexico will do what he wants if he applies a little pressure. Mexico, after all, is Mr. Trump’s enemy of choice, and he will stick to the same strategy of attacking the country during his 2020 re-election campaign. And now he knows how to crush us. Yet it is the Central American immigrants who are the real losers in this crisis. They have every right to feel betrayed. During the early days of the López Obrador administration, Mexico welcomed them, promising them visas and jobs. Then, without notice, the government started deporting them by the tens of thousands. Now, with this new immigration deal in place, Central Americans will have no safe passage at all. Nothing can stop a mother and a father when their children’s lives are in danger. The AMLOTrump deal may slow down the Central American immigration wave, but it won’t stop it. It’s simply too powerful. I remember the day I met Oscar, a 10-yearold boy from Honduras, in the smothering heat of Tapachula. Although he was exhausted, he wouldn’t stop walking. “What do you think about the United States?” I asked. “That it is pretty,” he answered. Mr. Trump and Mr. López Obrador will never be able to kill that sort of hope.

Mexican swimmer is breaking records. Yaroslavi Romero, who was born with Down syndrome, has won 250 medals throughout her career. Most recently, she won a silver medal and a bronze medal at the last Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi. Romero was diagnosed with Down syndrome 17 days after she was born, according to the Special Olympics Mexico website. Despite discouraging diagnoses from doctors, Romero’s parents never gave up. They made s u re R o m e ro went to physical therapies and sessions, trying to get her to be as independent as possible. Romero has been an athlete on the Special Olympics Mexico team since she was 17. Her passion for swimming started when she was a kid, after her mother signed her up in dolphin therapy sessions. After the 2019 Special Olympics World Games, Romero’s mother, Maria de Lourdes Lopez, told several Mexican news outlets how happy and proud she was for the medals Romero had. “Once someone told me she was not going to accomplish anything and that I shouldn’t cry for her,” she said. “These 250 medals mean effort and achievement.” Victor Martinez, Mexico’s team coach, also felt proud after the Special Olympics. “It’s an incredible feeling, and I’m really happy with the result,” Martinez said. Romero, who attended trade school, also is a certified chef and baker from the National Chamber of the Bakery and Similar Industry of Mexico.

ienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de la capital de nuestra isla vecina Cuba, que además de ser la ciudad más poblada también es el centro turístico principal del país: nos referimos a La Habana, Cuba. Fundada en el año 1514 por el conquistador Pánfilo Narváez, cuenta con una población que supera los 2.2 millones de habitantes. La Habana cuenta con un patrimonio histórico, arquitectónico y cultural de aborígenes, africanos y europeos. Debido a esta mezcla de culturas la ciudad es el principal punto de interés para los turistas que deciden visitar Cuba. En el año 1982 la UNESCO declara Patrimonio Histórico de la Humanidad al centro histórico de La Habana, siendo éste uno de los más conservados en toda América Latina. Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a La Habana tienen un costo promedio de $350, todos ellos con al menos 1 escala. La mejor manera de moverse por la ciudad es en taxi. Existen distintos tipos de taxis como lo son los antiguos coches americanos restaurados, los coco taxis (motos con techo amarillo), los bici taxis que son bicicletas con techo adaptado entre otros; recuerda acordar la tarifa de tu viaje antes de empezarlo. Los autobuses son un medio de transporte nada recomendado ya que cuenta con largas filas y son bastante tardados. Lineman/medical professional back with Chiefs as they prep for season By Julian Draper

ansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif found himself in a different position than usual this past offseason. As multiple news outlets have reported, the native Canadian is a medical school graduate who is pursuing a career in medicine during the offseason. This past offseason, he worked some night shifts in a community hospital trauma center “in order to stay in touch with knowledge and try to stay up to date,”he told reporters during a June 11 press conference at the team’s training

facility, located near Arrowhead Stadium But Duvernay-Tardif not only helped treat patients. He was a patient himself. On Oct. 7, 2018, during Kansas City’s 30-14 win over Jacksonville at Arrowhead Stadium, DuvernayTardif suffered a season-ending injury. That meant undergoing surgery to repair a fibula fracture, then doing rehab work during the offseason so he could rejoin the team. “It was my first experience … being on the other

side of the patient-physician relationship,” DuvernayTardif said. “And even though it’s kind of hard, I think you learn a lot – and I think I’m going to be a better physician because of that.” In being the patient in the doctor-patient relationship, a physician learns “how to cope with the psychological challenge of being injured,” DuvernayTardif said.
