It’s a good time to consider the state of our nation’s indigenous peoples. They suffer poor health, family instability, substance addiction and criminality in disproportionate numbers. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the suicide rate for Native Americans is more than 3.5 times higher than those among racial and ethnic groups with the lowest rates. And Native American and Alaska Native women experience higher levels of violence than all other U.S. women. Native Americans have the highest poverty and unemployment rate in the U.S., according to the Pew Research Center. Among the 21 percent who live on reservations, median family income is 53.7 percent of the national average; 37.9 percent of all Native Americans live in poverty – a rate that’s more than double the national average. Since 1870, there have been only four Native Americans in the U.S. Senate; since 1817, there have been only 18 in the U.S. House. No American Indian has ever served as president, and only one – Charles Curtis – has ever been elected vice president. There have been no American Indian or Alaska Native state governors and only one lieutenant governor – Byron Mallott of Alaska. There’s only an estimated 29,089 businesses owned by Native Americans and Alaska Natives, the 2016 Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs showed. The next day, on Oct. 21, Morales claimed victory in the first round, giving him a fourth term. That was when the protests started. Discontent with Morales has grown exponentially in recent years. In February 2016, Morales called for a referendum seeking approval for a constitutional revision that would allow him to run for a fourth term (Bolivia only allows two consecutive terms). The proposal was rejected 51 percent to 49 percent. Morales said he would respect the results of the referendum; however, in late 2017, a court ruling gave him the green light to run again. Morales has denied irregularities in the Oct. 20 presidential election and has said he welcomes an international audit of the election and vote-counting.

Dear Christie, Teaching kids there’s an emotional connection between work and money is one of the best things you can do as a parent. Once your kids are old enough to do a few simple chores around the house, they’re old enough to earn a little money doing them. In my mind, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with putting kids who are three or four on a basic commission system. If they do the jobs you assign them, they get paid. If they don’t do the jobs, they don’t get paid. We put a little dry-erase board on the refrigerator, and listed the jobs they had to do during the week with a dollar amount next to each one. Keep in mind, kids shouldn’t get paid for every little thing they do around the house. Some jobs are just a necessary component of being part of a family. And there are some things kids should do simply because mom or dad asked them to. Some jobs should have a higher purpose in mind, too, because as a parent, you should want to find as many teachable moments for your kids as possible. Once they’ve earned their money, sit down with them and divide it into three separate envelopes—saving, spending, and giving. That way, they get to learn about the uses for money while they’re learning how to work! —Dave

n grupo de científicos del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) en México afirman haber curado a 29 mujeres que tenían el virus de papiloma humano (VPH) en la Ciudad de México. El VPH es una enfermedad de transmisión sexual que se trasmite a través de contacto físico íntimo. Se sabe que algunas cepas de VPH causan cáncer de cuello uterino. Las estadísticas de la Asociación Estadounidense de Salud Sexual indican que cada año ocurren aproximadamente 14 millones de casos nuevos y al menos 79 millones de personas están infectadas con el VPH. Según medios de comunicación mexicanos, Eva Ramón Gallegos, científica con la Facultad Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas en OPN, curó a las 29 mujeres usando terapia fotodinámica (PTD, por sus siglas en inglés), que se utilizó para atacar el virus. La terapia consistió en aplicar ácido aminolevulínico para atacar al virus, y la terapia se usó dos veces cada 48 horas. Los resultado obtenidos fueron que las mujeres estaban libres de VPH. Además, según Gallegos, los resultados mostraron que la PTD puede erradicar las lesiones cervicales que conducen al cáncer cervical. Aunque los resultados se consideran prueba de una posible terapia para curar el VPH, los investigadores en los Estados Unidos afirman que se necesita más investigación. “Sea escéptico”, dijo el Dr. H. group of scientists from the Instituto Politecnico Nacional (IPN) in Mexico claim to have cured 29 women who had the human papillomavirus (HPV) in Mexico City. HPV is a sexually transmitted disease that is transmitted through intimate physical contact. Some HPV strains are known to cause cervical cancer. Statistics from the American Sexual Health Association state that every year approximately 14 million new cases occur and at least 79 million people are infected with HPV. According to Mexican media outlets, Eva Ramon Gallegos, a scientist with the National School of Biologic Sciences at IPN, cured the 29 women using photodynamic therapy (PTD), which was used to attack the virus. The therapy consisted of applying aminolevulinic acid to target the virus, with the therapy used twice every 48 hours. The results obtained were that the women were HPV free. Moreover, according to Gallegos, the results showed that PTD can eradicate cervical lesions that lead to cervical cancer. Although the results are considered proof of a possible therapy to cure HPV, researchers in the United States claim that further research is needed. “Be skeptical,” Dr. H. Hunter Handsfield, a professor at the University of Washington’s Center for AIDS and STD, stated in an article posted in February on the website of the TV show “Good Morning America.” “Examine whether the (research) article comes from a cited medical publication that has been peer-reviewed and is not preliminary data. The notion that all types of HPV can be cured by a single treatment or method is not a practical one.”

ne of these young people is, of course, the internationally known 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, of Sweden, who led a demonstration in New York City on Sept. 20, where the million-plus students in the city’s public school system have been excused if they want to join the strike. Has sanity — and by sanity, I mean hope — finally emerged as a counterforce to the impenetrable status quo of fossil fuel consumption, capitalism and nationalism? Here’s how Thunberg put it in a TED Talk she gave last year in Sweden: “The one thing we need more than hope is action. Once we start to act, hope is everywhere. So instead of looking for hope, look for action. Then, and only then, hope will come.” Has the upcoming generation taken it upon itself to save the planet? Is a transnational human unity beginning to create itself? Naomi Klein, in an interview with Common Dreams following the release of her new book, On Fire: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal, attempting to describe the enormity of the movement, said: It is a spiritual project. It is a narrative project. It is a movement project. It is a political project. And it is all of those forces coming together. We have a long way to go to build the political power required to turn the vision of the boldest, most justice-based Green New Deal into policy. But it is absolutely extraordinary to think how fast we have moved already. Indeed, as Klein pointed out, climate change is now on the Democratic political agenda. The party’s candidates for 2020 are addressing it and expressing support for the Green New Deal — “whether they meant it or not,” Klein noted. But even a candidate’s tepid endorsement of climate change action is shocking. Media and political bouncers have kept issues of real significance (e.g., war, demilitarization) out of presidential campaigns since George McGovern was clobbered by Richard Nixon in 1972. Let hope emerge! I don’t know what it will look like, except that it has to be global. It has to be the size of World War II, which spawned the Manhattan Project and a nuclear-armed planet with the capacity to kill itself in the short term as well as the long term. And by no means does hope mean ignoring the melting ice, rising oceans, devastating fires and intensifying storms — or the extinction of species — that our century-plus of geophysical experimentation has produced, or the seeming rise of fascist governments around the globe and the “climateapartheid” they are preparing for. No More Deaths, Please No Más Muertos, Por Favor

adie, absolutamente nadie, en México quiere otra matanza. Basta y sobra con las de Uruapan (19 muertos), Minatitlán (14 muertos) y muchas otras que ni nombre tienen. Incluso el reciente operativo en Culiacán, Sinaloa, también culminó con una matanza; hay más de una docena de muertos. Y lo que todos queremos — ¡todos! — es que ya no sigan matando a tantos mexicanos. Es falso sugerir que hay gente que hubiera querido una masacre aún mayor en el operativo en que se detuvo y luego liberó al hijo del Chapo Guzmán en Culiacán. ¿Quién quiere más muertos? Pero el problema con esa decisión presidencial es que sienta un grave precedente. ¿Qué va a pasar en la próxima operación con otro líder del narcotráfico? Ellos ahora ya saben que si amenazan a soldados y civiles, es posible que liberen a su capo. Liberar criminales difícilmente se puede considerar como parte de una estrategia para pacificar la nación. Sólo refuerza la idea que México ha sido y sigue siendo el país de la impunidad. Entonces ¿cuál es la verdadera estrategia del gobierno de Andrés Manuel López Obrador para que dejen de matar a decenas de miles de mexicanos cada año? Es la creación de la Guardia Nacional — con un altísimo componente militar — que para fin de año contará con unos 80 mil elementos. Pero hay que decirlo: A casi un año de su toma de posesión, la estrategia de seguridad de AMLO ha fallado. Las altísimas cifras de criminalidad ya son su responsabilidad, como lo reconoció el pasado 22 de agosto. “No quiero seguir responsabilizando a la administración pasada y a los de antes de esa administración”, dijo el Presidente. Pero no parece haber ningún sentido de urgencia. Aquí están las terribles cifras. Han asesinado a 28.782 mexicanos desde el 1 de diciembre del 2018 hasta el 30 de septiembre de este año, según cifras oficiales. De seguir así, el 2019 será el año más violento de la era moderna en México, con más homicidios dolosos que en cualquier año de Enrique Peña Nieto o Felipe Calderón. No hay otros datos. Algo no está funcionando. Y México no puede darse el lujo de seguir fracasando en su lucha contra el crimen. Los muertos se acumulan. Esto no es normal. Los mexicanos no podemos acostumbrarnos a que nos maten. Respecto a la inseguridad y a la impunidad, México sigue igual. ¿Cuántos culiacanes más hasta que algo cambie? Me adelanto. Esta no es una crítica neoliberal,

Most recently there was the military confrontation with the Sinaloa drug cartel in the city of Culiacán. The son of imprisoned drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was briefly captured, then released, after an assault by cartel gunmen. More than a dozen people died in the shootout. What we Mexicans want most is an end to
this killing of our countrymen. The suggestion that some would have preferred more death during the failed operation in Culiacán is wrong. Who would have wanted more people shot, even if they happened to work for the drug cartel? The problem with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s decision to release Guzmán’s son, though, is that it sets a terrible precedent. What will happen the next time the military goes after drug traffickers? Now they have learned that merely posing a threat to civilians or government troops is enough to get a kingpin freed. Releasing criminals can hardly be considered part of a serious strategy to bring peace to Mexico. It only reinforces the idea that this is a country where criminals go unpunished. So what is the president’s strategy? How is AMLO, as López Obrador is known, going to

Eso se lo sacaron de la manga cuando Trump los empezó a presionar. Y de pronto México — que durante décadas ha sido un país exportador de millones de inmigrantes — ahora se ha dado a la triste y vergonzosa tarea de perseguir a migrantes indocumentados (de Venezuela y Cuba, África y Centroamérica) que lo único que quieren es
seguir su trayecto hacia Estados Unidos. Para eso sí sirve la Guardia Nacional de México. Jamás pensé que un funcionario mexicano — como el Comisionado del Instituto Nacional de Migración — se atrevería a usar un lenguaje y amenazas trumpistas contra los inmigrantes. Y luego le escuché esto: “Es un aviso para toda la migración transcontinental: Así sean de Marte, los vamos a mandar [de regreso] hasta la India, hasta Camerún, hasta el África”. Trump estaría orgulloso de esta frase. El esfuerzo de México no debe ser contra los inmigrantes que cruzan nuestro territorio. Al contrario, ellos merecen ayuda, protección y comprensión. prevent tens of thousands of Mexicans from being killed each year? A major part of AMLO’s crime-fighting strategy was the newly created National Guard. Composed primarily of former army troops, the National Guard is expected to number roughly 80,000 by year’s end. At the moment, however, it’s clear that the president’s strategy hasn’t resolved the security issue. Almost a year after being inaugurated, the president can be held accountable for Mexico’s high level of crime, as he rightly acknowledged on Aug. 22, when he said: “I won’t keep on blaming the previous administration and those before that.” Yet López Obrador isn’t attacking the problem with a sense of urgency. The numbers are terrifying: According to official reports, 28,782 Mexicans were killed between Dec. 1, 2018 — the day AMLO was sworn in — and Sept. 30 of this year. The way things are going, 2019 will be the most violent year in Mexico’s modern history, with more murders recorded than during any year of the previous administrations of Enrique Peña Nieto or Felipe Calderón. Mexico can’t afford to keep failing in its fight against crime. Yet even as the victims pile up, nothing is being done to improve security or prevent criminals from going unpunished. This isn’t normal, and Mexicans are refusing to resign themselves to the violence. But how many more Culiacáns are needed before real change can happen? My criticism of the president is by no means ill-intentioned, nor does it result from a neoliberal or conservative political stance. If AMLO succeeds in his fight against crime, the whole country wins. Unfortunately, so far, he isn’t winning. Success, in this case, can actually be quantified, and positive numbers are nowhere to be found. The number of homicide victims in September of 2019 (2,825) was almost the same as the number in December of 2018 (2,892). The only tangible achievement the National Guard can claim so far is the arrest of innocent refugees on their way to the United States. When people started talking about a new National Guard, I don’t remember anyone saying its purpose would be to arrest foreigners fleeing gangs, violence and extreme poverty. Mexican officials came up with that idea only after President Donald Trump started pressuring them. Long an exporter of immigrants by the millions, Mexico has now taken on the sad task of persecuting undocumented migrants — from Venezuela and Cuba, Africa and Central America — who want only to continue their journey to the United States. The National Guard has handled this shameful duty very well. I never imagined that a Mexican official would dare threaten immigrants with Trumpist language. Then I heard the commissioner of the National Migration Institute say: “We are warning all transcontinental immigrants: It doesn’t matter if you’re coming from Mars, we’ll send you [back], whether it’s to India, Cameroon or Africa.” Trump would be proud. Mexico should not be focused on arresting immigrants. These people deserve our help; our protection and understanding. The real fight, the one that really counts, is the one against violence, and killing, and grief. No more deaths, please.

La tradición consiste en que las familias recuerden a sus muertos a través de elaborados altares, procesiones, bizcochos y dulces, que disipan, por un instante, la separación entre la vida y la muerte. En Estados Unidos, se llleva a cabo entre fines de octubre y principios de noviembre, y éstas son las ciudades en donde reina el Día de los Muertos en la tradición mexicana y centroamericana. 1. Un viaje espiritual en Washington, D.C. Con una serie de exposiciones y actividades para toda la familia, el Smithsonian Latino Center presenta una edición especial del Día de los Muertos en la tradición mexicana. Exposiciones, como el altar que hizo en 2015 la escritora Sandra Cisneros, dedicado a su madre (foto), y el viaje a Mictlán cobran un especial interés. Los aztecas creían que cundo alguien moría su espíritu emprendería un viaje de cuatro años antes de llegar a su destino final. A ese viaje le llamaban los niveles de Mictlán, que se pondrían al descubierto mediante ofrendas, papel picado, danzas y música.

he Day of the Dead is a colorful and moving T tradition celebrated in Mexico, in some countries in Latin America (with different tradi-
tions) and today in the United States. The tradition consists of families remembering their dead through elaborate altars, processions, biscuits and sweets, which dissipate, for an instant, the separation between life and death. In the United States, it takes place between the end of October and the beginning of November, and these are the cities where Day of the Dead reigns in the Mexican and Central American tradition.
1. A spiritual journey in Washington, D.C. With a series of exhibitions and activities for the whole family, the Smithsonian Latino Center presents a special edition of the Day of the Dead in the Mexican tradition. Exhibitions, such as the altar made in 2015 by the writer Sandra Cisneros, dedicated to her mother, and the trip to Mictlan are of special interest. Si tienes el presupuesto y el tiempo te recomiendo que te hospedes en el Walindi Plantation Resort, ya que en este sitio tienen un centro especializado para buceo, además de diferentes tours por las pequeñas islas que rodean la bahía. También podrás conocer los tres diferentes arrecifes que rodean a Kimbe: el arrecife Susan, el arrecife Donna y por último el arrecife Ana Sofía. *Sendero Kokoda: esta ruta de sendero es famosa en el mundo por ser una de las más arduas y complicadas. Se trata de un camino de cerca de 100km de distancia en donde se atraviesa la isla de norte a sur todo dentro de la selva tropical. Para completarse se debe de hacer un viaje a lo largo de 6 días en las que tendrás que caminar, escalar y además nadar, por un trayecto diario de aproximadamente 10 horas diarias. Es sin lugar a dudas un mágico lugar por recorrer entre los más osados e intrépidos. *Festival Sing-Sing: es el evento cultural más grande de todo el país. Esta ceremonia es llevada a cabo con música, danza y las viejas costumbres de las tribus de las Tierras Altas. Se lleva a cabo en el mes de agosto en el Monte Hagen y es el lugar ideal para conocer un poco más el estilo de vida que llevan algunas de las más de 1,000 tribus distintas que habitan en la isla. *Bahía de Milne: es sin lugar a dudas uno de los paisajes naturales más hermosos de toda la isla. Aquí podrás encontrar hermosas playas de arena blanca y aguas cristalinas, islas diseminadas, cascadas ocultas, sinuosos montes que albergan largos ríos todo ello envuelto en su hermosa selva tropical. Sin lugar a dudas uno de los mejores sitios para hacer senderismo, avistamiento de aves, buceo entre otras actividades acuáticas. La moneda oficial de Papúa es el Kina. Te recomiendo ampliamente que cambies bastante efectivo a la moneda local

ienvenidos turistas, en esta edición nos toca hablar de la segunda isla más grande del mundo, uno de los sitios considerados top mundial para practicar buceo: nos referimos a Papúa Nueva Guinea. La isla está dividida en dos naciones, Papúa Nueva Guinea y Nueva Guinea Occidental. Papúa se independizó en el año 1975 y cuenta con cerca de 7 millones y medio de habitantes. Papúa es considerado uno de los países más diversos del planeta, contando con más de 820 lenguas diferentes y además de uno de los más rurales en el mundo ya que el 70% de sus habitantes no viven en una ciudad urbanizada. También la religión es variada con casi un tercio de la población teniendo creencias de dioses indígenas, otro tercio de la población es católica y el último tercio de la población está dividido en diversas denominaciones protestantes. Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a Nueva Guinea tienen un costo promedio de $1,600 con al menos 2 escalas. La mejor forma de moverse por la isla es en avión. Cuentan con dos aerolíneas locales la PNG y la Air Niugini aunque hay que trazar bien nuestra ruta de viaje con anticipación para no pagar vuelos de más. Si tus viajes van a ser de una localidad pequeña a otra lo mejor es preguntar en donde pasan los PMV (pequeños autobuses públicos) que son sumamente económicos pero que desgraciadamente no tienen ruta por toda la isla. En cuanto a hospedaje es bastante elevado debido a que existen muy pocos hoteles alrededor de la isla, encontrando habitaciones en hoteles 3 estrellas por $90 por noche y en un hotel 5 estrellas por $200 la noche. Si eres una persona aventurera podrás encontrar hospedaje en las pequeñas poblaciones indígenas por menos de $30 en las casas de los mismos habitantes de la región. La mayoría de restaurantes sirven comida asiática, incluyendo la china, japonesa, tailandesa, filipina e indonesia; aunque si decides probar la comida tradicional te invito a que vayas a los pequeños mercados locales para que pruebes los guisos de cerdo con diferentes verduras y que se hacen en grandes hoyos en la tierra en donde se mete la carne envuelta en hojas de plátano y se cocina para darle un ligero toque a la tierra especial con la que se entierra. Aquí podrás encontrar, además de la comida más económica, algunas frutas y verduras típicas de la región. El costo promedio de una comida es de $20. Las cosas que deberás hacer y los lugares que deberás visitar en tu próxima visita por Papúa son: *Bahía de Kimbe: es el mejor sitio para practicar el buceo. En esta región, que se encuentra al este de la isla, podrás encontrar la mayor diversidad de especies marinas de toda la isla y además es uno de los lugares con mayor diversidad marina en el mundo. Es por esto que aquí acuden una gran cantidad de tours tanto para principiantes

Round-trip flights from Kansas to New Guinea have an average cost of $1,600 with at least two layovers. The best way to get around the island is by plane. There are two local airlines, PNG and Air Niugini, although you have to trace your travel route well in advance so as not to pay extra flights. If your trips are going to be from a small town to another, it is best to ask where PMVs (small public buses) stops are, which are extremely cheap but unfortunately do not have a route throughout the island. Regarding lodging, it is pretty high because there are few hotels around the island, finding rooms in 3-star hotels at $90 per night, and in 5-star hotels at $200 per night. Here you can find beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, scattered islands, hidden waterfalls, winding mountains that house long rivers all wrapped in its beautiful rainforest. Without a doubt one of the best places for hiking, bird watching, and diving, among other water activities. The official currency of Papua is the Kina. I strongly recommend that you change a lot of cash into the local currency if you want to explore small towns, local markets, and if you plan to mobilize by bus or any service you wish to acquire locally, since Papua is a very rural country and you will hardly find places where you can pay by card or pay with American dollars. With 5 minutes, 13 seconds left in the fourth quarter of their meeting with Green Bay at Arrowhead Stadium, the Chiefs faced fourth-and-3 at their own 40-yard line, trailing 31-24. They had two choices. They could attempt to get the first down and try to keep a game-tying or game-winning scoring drive alive, but risk turning over the ball on downs if they failed to gain at least 3 yards
to win it. But the Chiefs could not stop the Packers, who picked up three first downs and ran out the clock to hand Kansas City a seven-point interconference loss. An 8-yard pass play from quarterback Aaron Rodgers to running Aaron Jones on third-and-5 from the Green Bay 33 helped seal Kansas City’s fate.
