he flu and colds are not the only illnesses that can strike during wintertime. Sometimes, cold weather affects people’s mental health. They might not feel motivated to do activities they once enjoyed or have a lack of energy. Those behavioral changes might be linked to the seasonal affective disorder better known as the winter blues. According to the Mayo Clinic, the winter blues is a type of depression that is related to seasonal changes. Symptoms include lack of sleep, changes in appetite, feelings of hopelessness and guilt, and death- and suicide-related thoughts. If you feel a little bit down because of the weather, here are some tips that might help you: *Be active: Understandably, if it is cold, you might not want to go out. However, it is important to keep moving. One thing you can do is exercise. If you do not have a gym membership, try working out at home to some YouTube videos. *Turn your lights on: During wintertime, there is less daylight, which can affect your mood. Brighten your day emotionally by turning on your lights. Research shows that having the lights on can help make people feel better.

The video also makes clear the agency inaccurately described how Hernandez’s body was discovered. In the video, Hernandez’s cellmate wakes up and walks to the toilet, where he finds Hernandez lying in a pool of blood on the floor. He calls for help. It is then that agents enter the cell and discover the teen died during the night. ProPublica’s investigation also shows numerous missteps during the days leading up to Hernandez’s death. Independent medical experts consulted by ProPublica pointed specifically to the decision to send the 16-year-old suffering from the flu to a holding cell, rather than a hospital. “Why is a teenaged boy in a jail facility at all if he is sick with a transmissible illness? Why isn’t he at a hospital or at a home or clinic where he can get a warm bed, fluids, supervised attention and medical care? He is not a criminal,” Dr. Judy Melinek, a San Francisco-based forensic pathologist, told ProPublica. “No one should die this way.” CBP declined to comment, citing an ongoing internal investigation. The Department of Homeland Security inspector general has been investigating the circumstance of Hernandez’s death but has not released any findings.

Sporting Kansas City has won the MLS Cup twice, in 2000 and in 2013; and the U.S. Open Cup four times, the last one in 2017. months leading up to commencement, Angie studied what colleges and universities had to offer, met with her school guidance counselor, requested admissions packages for the schools that interested her and toured campuses. To help prepare, Angie sought advice from her older sisters, friends and teachers, and she shadowed professionals in her chosen field. In short, a lot went into Angie’s transition from high school senior to college freshman preparing for a career. Through it all, she had access to people willing to help, support and guide her. And they were there at her commencement, celebrating her academic accomplishment. Odds are that Angie will earn her bach-

elor’s and master’s degrees as she plans. She’s always proven she’s got what it takes to succeed. She’s smart and savvy. And she can call on family and friends with firsthand experience with college. Tens of thousands of her counterparts across the country aren’t so fortunate. They have no one to help them prepare for high school graduation and beyond. They’re on their own. Every year, upwards of 23,000 teenagers in foster care here in the United States age out of the foster care system. At age 18, they suddenly become homeless, without help, income, financial prospects, emotional support or life or job skills. Many have inadequate academic preparation – they’re less inclined to finish high school -- and few to no instructional resources. By age 26, only four percent of youths who age out of foster care have earned a four-year college degree, according to Children’s Rights, a watchdog group. For most, their unfortunate past will determine their bleak future. Forty-three percent will experience homelessness, and they’re far more likely to experience substance abuse, unemployment and incarceration. The fostercare-to-prison-pipeline is “alive and well,” a Washington state assistant secretary for juvenile rehabilitation told a gathering of youth services professionals this week. And because of their obvious vulnerability, they’re easy targets for traffickers. There are around 443,000 kids in foster care in this country; many – at least 25 percent – ended up in care after being severely abused by their parents. As young adults, not only do they lead an anchorless existence without benefit of family support and skills to make it on their own, they may also experience posttraumatic stress disorder and other mental health problems. We are as a society, the de facto parents/ guardians of kids in foster care, and we’re failing them. We’re not providing reliable, stable, supportive foster homes and case workers for kids during their formative years nor are we helping them successfully transition to adulthood. They each need caring adults, personal attention, appropriate mental health care, a quality education, stability, the advice and support of college-educated adults, access to professional and vocational advisors and basic life skills. Society makes a commitment to the children we take into our foster care system. We promise to meet their needs and give them the care they deserve to realize their highest potential. You will need scissors, masking tape, white craft glue, crepe paper of various colors, a star-shaped balloon, seven colored birthday party hats, one cup of flour, water a mixing bowl, a paintbrush, some string and old newspapers. Saying No to Trump’s Troops By Chara No a las tropas de Trump

EL PRESIDENTE DE ESTADOS UNIDOS DIJO QUE DESIGNARÁ A LOS CÁRTELES DE DROGAS MEXICANOS COMO GRUPOS TERRORISTAS. LAS IMPLICACIONES, ESPECIALMENTE LA DE TENER SOLDADOS ESTADOUNIDENSES EN MÉXICO, SON RIESGOSAS MIAMI — México no debería, bajo ninguna circunstancia, aceptar la presencia de tropas de Estados Unidos (o de cualquier otro país) en su territorio. Es una cuestión de principios, de soberanía y de historia. Este tema surge tras el brutal asesinato de seis niños y tres mujeres mexicano-estadounidenses en Sonora, México, miembros de las familias LeBarón y Langford. Poco después, la familia le pidió al presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, que designara a los narcotraficantes mexicanos como grupos terroristas y éste, en una entrevista, dijo que lo haría. Las posibles consecuencias serían enormes; desde sanciones contra México, aranceles y certificaciones anuales hasta una mayor militarización de la frontera y más retrasos en la aprobación del nuevo tratado de libre comercio. Pero la principal preocupación de México es que soldados o agentes estadounidenses operaran dentro de territorio mexicano. Para millones de mexicanos no habría nada más amenazante que saber que militares estadounidenses estarían actuando en México bajo las órdenes de un Presidente impredecible, como lo es Trump, quien ha hecho comentarios racistas contra mexicanos. En una llamada telefónica, Trump le ofreció al Presidente de México ayudarlo en lo que necesitara, según relató en una conferencia de prensa el propio Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Pero Trump no conoce a AMLO y se va a quedar esperando. Hay mucha historia entre ambos países. En todas las escuelas mexicanas se enseña cómo México perdió la mitad de su territorio ante Estados Unidos en 1848 y esa sigue siendo una herida abierta. La última vez que hubo tropas extranjeras en México fue en 19161917, cuando el general John Pershing dirigió una expedición contra Pancho Villa, y los mexicanos ya no quieren verlos de nuevo. Es mejor que Trump se olvide de enviar soldados o agentes de operaciones especiales al sur. Si Estados Unidos de verdad quiere ayudar a México en la lucha contra los narcotraficantes, podría hacer dos cosas muy importantes: la primera es controlar el flujo de armas de Estados Unidos hacia México y la segunda es reducir el número de estadounidenses que consumen drogas. Ninguna de las dos cosas serían fáciles ni políticamente viables. Si Estados Unidos no ha hecho nada para controlar el uso de armas de fuego luego de las masacres de los últimos veinte años en decenas de escuelas como Columbine (13 muertos en 1999), Sandy Hook (26 muertos en 2012) y Parkland (17 muertos en 2018), menos lo va a hacer para evitar el enorme tráfico de armas a México. De las 106.000 pistolas recobradas en México en investigaciones criminales de 2011 a 2016, el 70 por ciento fueron compradas legalmente en Estados Unidos, según publicó recientemente el Center for American Progress. Y el congreso en Washington no está haciendo nada al respecto. Estados Unidos, también, podría ayudar mucho a México si redujera el número de personas que consumen drogas. MIAMI — Mexico should not agree, under any circumstances, to host United States troops — or those from any other country — in its territory. It’s a matter of principle, sovereignty and history. This issue arose in the aftermath of the brutal killing in Sonora state of nine members of a local Mormon family — six children and three women, all with dual Mexican-American citizenship. Shortly after the November massacre, the family asked President Trump to designate Mexican drug traffickers as terrorists; and Mr. Trump, in an interview, said he would. Such a designation could have severe conse-

quences, ranging from the imposition of tariffs and sanctions on Mexico to the increasing militarization of America’s southern border and more delays in the passage of the revised North American Free Trade Agreement. However, Mexico’s main concern should be the stationing of American soldiers on its soil. For millions of Mexicans, nothing could be more worrying than the United States military operating in Mexico on the orders of a president as unpredictable as Mr. Trump, someone who has made several racist remarks about their countrymen. According to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Mr. Trump called him and offered to help. But it’s clear that President Trump doesn’t know Mr. López Obrador very well or the long history between the two countries. All Mexican schoolchildren are taught that their nation lost half its territory to the United States in 1848, and the pain of that loss remains fresh. The last time foreign troops were seen in Mexico was in 1916-1917, when Gen. John Pershing led an expedition against Pancho Villa — and Mexicans don’t want to see them again. President Trump better forget about sending soldiers or troops of any kind to Mexico. If the United States really wants to help Mexico in its war against drug traffickers, there are two very important steps it needs to

López Obrador —quien llega a su primer año en el gobierno con altos niveles de aprobación—

ha cuidado muchísimo su relación con Trump. Sin embargo, la imagen de su presidencia se resquebrajaría si aceptara tropas estadounidenses en su territorio. Así que su mejor apuesta es resistir la presión de Estados Unidos y esperar un cambio en las elecciones de 2020. Pero eso no resuelve el gravísimo problema de la narcoviolencia en México. AMLO debe reconocer, con mucha humildad, que su estrategia anticrimen —“abrazos, no balazos”— no ha funcionado y que tiene que hacer algo urgente. En lugar de detener personas que migran desde Centroamérica, la Guardia Nacional debería concentrarse en rescatar las ciudades y carreteras más peligrosas. México está a punto de registrar otro “año más violento” en su historia moderna. En 2018, una persona fue asesinada cada 15 minutos para un total de más de 33.000 homicidios. En 2019, ya van más de 28.000 muertos de enero a octubre. Si el Presidente de México no corrige su estrategia contra la violencia ahora, todo su sexenio podría estar marcado de sangre, secuestros y homicidios. El evidente orgullo nacional mexicano de tener a un líder que se opone vehementemente a una intervención extranjera podría ser menoscabado si fracasa en su intento de reducir el crimen y controlar a los narcos. Decirle no a las tropas de Trump es un buen primer paso de AMLO. Ahora falta todo lo demás. Y Trump pronto se dará cuenta de que tuitear no es gobernar. Sus bravuconadas digitales no afectan en lo más mínimo el tráfico de drogas ni la narcoviolencia en México. Incluso alguien como él, que parece haberse saltado todas sus clases de historia, no puede regresar a Estados Unidos a una época de intervenciones e invasiones. La situación en México le está demostrando que no todo se resuelve con fuerza y con tuits.

take: First, control the flow of weapons from the United States into Mexico, and second, lower the American demand for narcotics. Of course, neither of these is an easy or politically viable task. Given that the United States failed to control the spread of firearms after the school shootings at Columbine in 1999 (13 killed), Sandy Hook in 2012 (26 killed) and Parkland in 2018 (17 killed), the government will be unlikely to do anything now to stop the huge flow of firearms into Mexico. Seventy percent of the 106,000 guns seized as part of criminal investigations in Mexico between 2011 and 2016 were legally bought in the United States, according to a recent report by the Center for American Progress. But Congress hasn’t done anything about the problem. It would also help Mexico if Americans would use fewer drugs. It all comes down to the dynamics of supply and demand: Mexican cartels are simply filling the orders of American consumers. Over 11 million Americans misused opioids in 2017, according to a national health survey. That same year, 5.9 million people used cocaine, and nearly 41 million people smoked marijuana. Mexican drug dealers are exploiting a vast drug market that isn’t about to shrink anytime soon. Drugs are smuggled into the United States mainly through its ports of entry. Mexican drug traffickers, particularly the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels, quickly adapt to changes in consumer taste and represent “the greatest criminal drug threat to the United States,” a 2018 study conducted by the Department of Justice concluded. In this distressing political landscape, how can Mexico and the United States work together to fight drug cartels? Both countries must continue to share strategic and financial information on criminal groups, push for extradition (nothing scares Mexican drug dealers more than the thought of spending the rest of their lives in an American prison) and tone down the criticism on social media. President Trump tweeted that it was time “to wage WAR on the drug cartels and wipe them off the face of the earth.” But posting on Twitter is no way to rule. President López Obrador — who has high approval rates after one year in power — has been very cautious when it comes to his relationship with Mr. Trump. However, Mr. López Obrador’s image as a leader would be seriously damaged if he were to accept the presence of American troops on Mexican land. His better bet is to stand firm, resist American pressure and hope for change with the 2020 election. Unfortunately, a new president won’t solve the terrible problem of drug-related violence in Mexico. Mr. López Obrador must humbly accept that his strategy — summed up as “hugs, not bullets” — isn’t working and that urgent action is required. Instead of stopping Central American refugees from entering across Mexico’s southern border, the National Guard should focus on bringing peace back to Mexico. This year may turn out to be the most violent in Mexico’s modern history. More than 33,000 homicides were recorded in 2018, with one person killed every 15 minutes. This year, 28,000 people were killed between January and October. If Mr. López Obrador doesn’t make adjustments to his crime-fighting strategy soon, his six-year term could end up covered in blood. The evident pride Mexicans feel in their president strongly opposing any foreign intervention may be undermined if Mr. López Obrador fails to crack down on drug traffickers. Saying no to President Trump’s troops is a good first step. Now Mexico’s president needs to take on the other challenges confronting his country. Mr. Trump will soon realize that he can’t rule with tweets alone. His digital ruses have no effect on drug traffickers or drug-related violence in Mexico. Even someone like him, who seems to have no knowledge of history, can’t take the United States back to a time when it invaded other countries whenever it wanted. As the situation in Mexico clearly shows, not everything can be solved by force or by tweet.

he Central Methodist University men’s soccer team repeated itself. With a 3-1 win over Hastings (Nebraska) College Dec. 7 in Irvine, California, the Eagles won the NAIA national title. It was the second straight national men’s soccer title for the Fayetteville, Missouri-based school. The Eagles, whose roster this season included seven players from predominantly Spanish-speaking countries and one player from a predominantly Portuguese-speaking country, scored all their goals during the first half. Senior forward Junior Kazeem finished a pass from sophomore and native Colombian Daniel Hernandez in the 15th minute for the first goal. Paraguayan-born junior midfielder Rodrigo Paredes finished a ball from Brazilianborn senior forward Rian Marques to make it 2-0 Eagles in the 37th minute. Hernandez and

Breeland – and an 11th-hour correction of a logistical mix-up. The Chiefs punched their ticket for the AFC bracket of the NFL playoffs, slated to begin Jan. 4 and 5, by holding off New England 23-16 Sunday (Dec.

8) at Gillette Stadium. They qualified by clinching the AFC West title – their fourth straight – with a combination of their victory and second-place Oakland’s loss Sunday to visiting Tennessee. It appeared, though, the Chiefs (9-4) might have to wait at least one week to secure their latest division title and sixth playoff appearance in seven seasons. They shook off a 7-0 first-quarter deficit by staging

a 23-point run that began in the first quarter and ended in the third quarter. But then, New England attempted to rally. First, Patriots running back Brandon Bolden ripped off a 10-yard TD run with 4 minutes, 23 seconds left in third quarter to cut Kansas City’s lead to 23-13. Veteran quarterback Tom Brady then engineered a nine-play, 46-yard drive, capped by Nick Folk’s 29-yard field goal with 11:42 left in the fourth quarter, to make it a seven-point ballgame. Taking possession with 5:04 remaining after a Kansas City punt, Brady led the Patriots from their own 32-yard line to the Kansas City 5. Facing fourthand-three with 1:11 left, he threw for wide receiver Julian Edelman in the end zone, hoping his pass would result in a touchdown that would allow the Patriots to tie it with a field goal and perhaps force overtime, or attempt a two-point conversion to put them in position to win it in regulation.

But when Edelman ran his out route, Breeland went with him, knocking the ball to the turf. “I just undercut him and … played the ball, Breeland, whose other contributions included a first-half interception, told reporter BJ Kissel. With the incomplete pass, the Chiefs took over on downs and ran out the clock. “You just knew it was going to come down to the end,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said during his postgame press conference. A few hours before kickoff, however, it seemed uncertain if Breeland and his fellow Chiefs would take the field, let alone stage their dramatic win. As multiple news sources reported, much of the team’s equipment was mistakenly sent to New Jersey and had to be routed to Gillette Stadium, where it arrived less than two hours before kickoff. Had the gear not reached the Foxboro, Massachusetts, venue by kickoff, New England would have won by forfeit, ESPN and other media outlets reported. Had Kansas City forfeited or Brady engineered his 36th fourth-quarter comeback win, the Patriots would have clinched an AFC playoff spot. At 10-3, with three regular-season games remaining, the Patriots are still expected to qualify and secure a first-round bye. “Hopefully, we’ve got a lot of football left and (we will) see if we can get back on track next week,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick told reporters. “And that’s really all there is to it.”
