On Feb. 25, Mexican journalist Jorge Ramos and his Univision TV crew were briefly detained at the presidential palace in Caracas, Venezuela, after Ramos asked a question that did not meet Maduro’s approval. Venezuelan officials confiscated their equipment. Later, it was returned, but with some items removed. After weeks of rumors about a “Momo” challenge that reportedly involved the presence of a creepy character giving instructions to children to hurt themselves, YouTube and multiple media outlets confirmed in late February and early March that the challenge was a hoax.

Between now and June, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments and render decisions in cases that could radically change the way many Americans live. Among top issues affecting society that justices will consider are the future of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals); gun owners’ rights; religious school funding; abortion restrictions; and provisions of the Affordable Care Act. There may be things in our personal lives that we resolve to change this coming year that will be life-changing if achieved. Let’s add to them these important goals: Make sure our voter registration is up-to-date. Study voter guides and sample ballots for local, state and federal elections. Find out how to lower our carbon footprint and take steps to put into practice. Engage respectfully with elected officials and hold them accountable. The future health and success of our country depend on it.

It just doesn’t make sense to us to consider 2020 as part of the 2010s; it’s the opening year of the 2020s. The new decade’s inaugural year promises shifting sands; 2020 will be a period of possibly significant and lasting political, scientific and social change. The U.S. and 26 other nations will elect new leaders. And political analysts name several additional heads of state who could be ousted in 2020. They lead countries that don’t have a nationwide vote scheduled next year, but various internal upheavals could force early elections. Throughout the month of June, Dos Mundos celebrated 38 years of serving the Hispanic community in Kansas City. In 1981, Clara Reyes started the newspaper in the basement of her and husband Manuel Reyes’ house. Now, it is the area’s largest and most read Hispanic newspaper. Then-councilman Quinton Lucas was elected the new Kansas City, Missouri, mayor on June 18. He became the youngest person to win the mayoral office in more than a century. Around mid-June, Mexico deployed its National Guard to its border with Guatemala to try to help curb the flow of Central American immigrants traveling through the country en route to the United States. Public uproar ensued in June after a group of attorneys visited a detention facility in Texas, where they discovered that immigrant children had been detained for weeks without access to soap, clean clothes or adequate food. The conditions contradicted the

However, some of the customs that are part of many Latino New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day celebrations include the following: *Sweeping the floor: Many Latinos think that sweeping the floor will rid them of bad luck. When midnight arrives, they find the nearest broom and start sweeping out the “negative energy.” *Going outside with their luggage: Some Latinos believe the ritual of walking down the road with luggage will invite a lot of traveling during the year. They have their baggage ready and run out the door when the clock strikes midnight. *Eating 12 grapes: Eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight is celebrated by many Hispanics. Each grape represents not only good luck for each month, but also represents the 12 wishes a person should make while eating the grapes. This ritual has its origins centuries ago in Europe. The upper class in France used to celebrate New Year’s Eve by eating grapes and drinking sparkling wine. Another theory links eating grapes to a production boom in the early 1900s in the south of Spain, where producers started selling them as “good luck grapes.” However the tradition started, Latin Americans have observed it for years. *Wearing colorful underwear: Latinos believe the color of your underwear will attract positive things throughout the year. Red represents love. White underwear, it is believed, will invite peace into your life. Yellow will bring you money. Green underwear will bring you good health. Once the wearer has selected a color, the underwear is to be worn upside down on New Year’s Eve, then worn correctly for the first minutes of the new year. *Sheep figurines: The sheep has long been considered a mystic symbol of wealth and prosperity in Latino culture. Thus, Hispanics believe it is important to receive a sheep figurine at the beginning of every new year. According to the tradition, you cannot buy the figurine. Rather, you must receive it as a gift.

Every lunar new year is represented by one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, which is based on a 12-year cycle. In 2020, Chinese New Year will begin Jan. 25 and end Feb. 8. During that time, fireworks and dragons will fill the streets of China and Chinatowns across the world. Families also will share homemade dishes that hold various meanings, including egg rolls to symbolize wealth, uncut chow mein noodles to represent health for a long life and shrimp to embody happiness. *Jewish New Year: Usually celebrated in September (sometimes late September/early October), Rosh Hashanah is the start of a new year on the Jewish calendar. Jews believe God takes special note of people and their behaviors, writing them into the Book of Life. For Jews, the two-day celebration encourages them to consider what awaits them in their next chapter of life. Spiritual realignment, connecting through prayer and justice are the values that guide Jews to start a new year in a positive way. Therefore, the holiday is a time for reflection, forgiveness and improvement. The festivities are full of prayer, rituals and food. The meals hold symbolic meanings, such as apples dipped in honey to represent a sweet new year. *Mayan New Year: The date of the celebration is different every year; however, the holiday is celebrated around July. The day is set according to the Haab Mayan calendar. For the Maya people, the holiday must be celebrated with five days of silence, reflection and the pursuit of a balance with nature. In Mexico and Central America, where much of the modern Maya people live, the Gregorian new year is usually observed, rather than the Mayan New Year. *New Year’s celebrations in India: Being a diverse nation, the new year is celebrated in various regions at various times of the year in India, depending on the solar and lunar calendars. In the regions that follow the solar cycle, the new year falls in April. Those regions that follow lunar calendars celebrate the holiday in March. All totaled, there are more than 20 dates when a new year can be observed in India. But all the festivities share some commonalities. Observers enjoy the new year with family members, friends and the community. They also wear traditional attire, prepare regional festive meals, walk in street processions, dance and visit their local holy shrine.

¡Mi relación se acabó por otra!
Q
ué se te viene a la cabeza cuando digo “Mi relación se acabó por otra?” seguramente creerás que fue culpa de una amante. ¡Pero no! Hay una tercera mujer que daña relaciones, genera conflictos y hasta destruye hogares. Ella es una de las principales causas de terapia de pareja porque su amor obsesivo provoca divorcios. Esta mujer es nada más y nada menos que la temida suegra conflictiva, ¡ojo! No digo que todas sean así, pero no es un secreto que hay mamás que no comparten el amor de sus hijos con nadie. Esto sucede tanto con hombres como mujeres. Reconocer estas suegras es fácil, es común escucharlas decir la famosa expresión “nuera”… que para ellas significa “no era” la que quería para mi hijo. Además brindan su opinión sin que nadie se las pida, defienden a capa y espada a su hijo/a, incluso cuando saben que lo que hizo no fue lo correcto, llegan sin avisar y siembran cizaña hasta lograr discordia en la pareja. Y si este es tu caso, habla con tu cónyuge, no tienes que pelear, ni hablarle ofensas sobre ella, recuerda que él la quiere tanto como quieres tú a tu mamá, simplemente expone tu inconformidad y pídele que
entre ambos busquen una solución en la que haya un punto de equilibrio. Si quieres resultados inmediatos, mudarte lejos de ella sería una fantástica solución, sin embargo si tu pareja padece de mamitis no accederá a esta petición, así que proponerle terapia de pareja para aprender a manejar esta situación es una buena opción. Como dicen por ahí “es mejor tener el enemigo de cerca que de lejos”, así que si te tocó una de esas suegras que cree que eres una amenaza para ella porque teme que le robes la atención de su hijo/a, te sugiero que le cuentes algunos de tus problemas y pídele su consejo, al preocuparse de ti, olvidará el miedo de perder a su hijo/a porque sentirá que ha ganado un nuevo integrante en su familia.

ienvenidos turistas, en esta edición hablaremos de distintas ciudades de un país africano, sitio en donde se termina la famosa “gran migración”: nos referimos a Kenia, África. El país keniano logró su independencia de Reino Unido en el año de 1963 y cuenta con casi 50 millones de habitantes. El nombre del país se debe al gran monte Kenia, el cual es el segundo más alto de todo África. Su capital es la ciudad de Nairobi, la cual es una de las ciudades con mayor importancia comercial en todo el continente. El país cuenta con el mayor PIB de todo el Este y Centro de África. Los vuelos de Kansas a Kenia tienen un costo promedio de $1,100 siendo los más económicos los que te llevan a la capital Nairobi, eso si con dos escalas la mayoría de ellos. La mejor forma de trasladarse sin lugar a dudas es en algún tour pagado previamente, aunque también puedes hacer la renta de vehículos por unos $100 diarios, aunque debes considerar que la mayoría de las calles no son asfaltadas y que las reglas de tránsito no son del todo respetadas por lo que deberás moverte con precaución. Full-time position available with the City of KCMO. Plans, implements, coordinates, manages and administers a correctional program/institution. Provides constructive services within a framework of adequate custodial measures as well as the formulation of correctional policies/procedures in keeping with modern penology concepts and departmental standards and policies. Reports directly to the City Manager and, on a daily basis, works in close cooperation with the Courts Administrator, Chief of Police, and elected Judiciary. Assists in the development of policies and procedures which govern the administration and operation of the correctional program/institution. Directs through subordinates, the custodial and treatment programs of the correctional program/institution including security measures, housing, feeding, clothing, medical, religious, recreational, educational, social service, and work activities. Directs and participates in the recruitment, selection, training, retention, promotion, or dismissal of correctional program/institution personnel. Maintains population control over detainees and sentenced municipal offenders. Facilitates with Municipal Court, KCMO Police Department, and City Manager’s Office through a City Justice Program Coordination Committee. Collaborates with social service and behavioral health organizations for programming for inmates. Oversees incarceration alternatives and develops plans with the coordination of the Municipal Court. Interprets the correctional program and establishes/ maintains good public relations through news articles, speeches, and guided tours of correctional program/ institution buildings, grounds, and facilities. Inspects the correctional program/institution buildings, facilities, and grounds regularly for security, cleanliness, and operation of other custodial activities. Monitors activity of program/institution employees, identifying safety and health hazards and correcting unsafe working conditions via the appropriate supervision. Directs the preparation and presentation of employee safety and health training modules consistent with the sound psychology of positive behavioral change. Keeps abreast of professional and technology developments. Participates in programs of related professional organizations to update knowledge of a correctional program/institution. Evaluates publications concerned with safety and health management of a correctional program/ institution. Candidates for this position must be experienced in corrections operations, innovative in administering programs designed to reduce recidivism and promote transition back into the community, and able to communicate effectively with Department Directors, the Courts, City Council, Community Leaders, and other external stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated ability to operate with considerable independence consistent with the high standards of Kansas City. REQUIRES an accredited Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of progressively responsible work in the correctional field, including 3 years in a responsible administrative or supervisory position; OR an equivalent combination of qualifying education and experience.
