n Sunday (March 8), many Mexican women took to the streets to protest gender violence in Mexico. On Monday (March 9), many Mexican women staged an unprecedented strike – also to protest gender violence in Mexico. During the march, women filled the streets of Mexico’s biggest cities. More than 30,000 people participated in the march in Mexico City. “I was … (in) last year’s march,” Mexican citizen Jimena Espinoza said. “But I feel that this year was much more powerful. Everyone had their reason to be there and make their voices … heard.” Espinoza also said she never saw so many people wearing purple – the color used to show support for the protests.

No other information will be provided about the patient.” The government of Kansas City, Missouri, claims it is monitoring the number of cases in Kansas City and in Missouri’s second largest city, St. Louis. “Our health department is leading our preparation and is working closely with several other city health departments across the nation,” Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said in a statement. “Additionally, cities and counties across our state are working together to share information, and we will keep working with our regional partners to keep the public safe.” At press time, most of the coronavirus cases in the United States were on the West Coast. The state of Washington had reported 136 cases. California had reported 110 cases. To avoid contacting the coronavirus, people are advised to wash their hands before they cook and eat, and after using the bathroom and nose blowing. The daughter of a Mexican immigrant, Sanchez never wavered in her career path choice. “I never questioned it,” she said. “The fact that I was that adamant about what I wanted kept me in the game. I can see that now.” That perseverance led Sanchez to work for The Kansas City Star for more than 30 years. She had a paid internship with The Star right out of college and was one of the two students ever hired directly out of that program. Sanchez left in August 2018. Her passion for journalism led her to write for other prestigious organizations, such as The Poynter Institute and Madrid-based wire service EFE. One thing Sanchez likes about being a journalist is having the chance to be a voice for others. “It has afforded me the ability to have (an) impact and to be in people’s lives in ways that I wouldn’t otherwise,” she said. “It’s a real privilege to be able to have that space and voice. You better wield it well.” Despite the many changes journalism is experiencing, Sanchez still believes in its importance to society. “I’ve always done a lot of mentoring with younger reporters because I believe in what journalism gives to society and what society gives to journalism,” she said. Sanchez hopes things will get better in the field, she said. Sanchez’s advice to anyone pursuing any dreams is to be open to growth. “Always be open to learning and growing,” she said. “People need to just be fully aware of all their background, of everything that they bring (to the table).”

n early December, Kansas City, Mo., announced a bold, forward-thinking move that elated area bus riders and drew attention worldwide. It also worried some local residents. On Dec. 5, the KC Council unanimously approved “Zero Fare Transit,” a proposal to make the bus system fare-free within city limits beginning this year. Nations, such as Luxembourg and cities across the U.S. praised Kansas City -- the first major U.S. city to offer free bus service. However, there are legitimate concerns that once it’s implemented, the resulting increase in ridership will cause problems. Free transit

will open the door to vagrants, homeless or inebriated people and squatters. Riders and drivers could see an upsurge in the incidence of harassment and overall misbehavior. Because abuse and harassment of women on public transportation is already a serious issue almost everywhere, zero bus fare could make it even more uncomfortable and risky for women riders. A young woman in a letter to the editor published in the Feb. 13 edition of The Kansas City Star called attention to sexual harassment on KC buses and pressed for transit authority and city leaders to take the measures necessary to “guarantee their passengers’ safety, even if that means having a security officer on every bus.” A regular rider, the young letter writer spotlighted a real threat to women everywhere; it’s a global phenomenon, research shows. Many women can’t use public transport “without the fear of being victimized,” according to the first Global Mobility Report published in 2017. In 2018, Jennifer Dill, a professor of urban studies and planning and director of Portland State University’s Transportation Research and Education Center published this article on her blog, “How can transit agencies make their facilities safe from sexual harassment?” In her piece, Dill referenced several informative and useful studies illustrating the scope of the problem and outlining “specific safety and security programs” that transit agencies could put into place to ensure “the safety and security of female passengers.” Dill referenced a chilling piece on harassment on public transit in The Washington Post. It included this statement, “If you’re a woman who rides public transportation, you’re almost guaranteed to experience the kinds of demeaning and threatening encounters that fit squarely within the bounds of the #MeToo conversation.” The City Council is on the right track with zero fare transit for economic and critical environmental interests. Americans spend 15.9-to-17.1 percent of their budget on transportation costs. It’s an especially heavy burden for the working poor, those on fixed-incomes, students, seniors, disabled riders and veterans. Doesn’t it make more sense to immediately institute policies, equipment and programs necessary to protect female riders and drivers from sexual assault on the bus? Then, phase in zero fare transit, starting with low-income riders. More women aren’t likely to take advantage of free fare if the ride exposes them to harassment or assault. Isn’t that allowing lack of vision and common sense to defeat the purposes of establishing zero fare transit? Support for the protests crossed gender lines. “I support this day … because I have a daughter,” said Jose Perez, an Uber driver from Yucatan. “Women have been empowering themselves, as they deserve (to do). I have nothing but support for this movement. My wife is a stay-(at)-home woman and she also was part of the strike. She didn’t cook, … (nor) did any of her usual chores.” However, not all women could stay home and be on strike. Although many companies supported striking employees, some of them did not back up their female workers, as Mexican student Andre Gonzalez observed. “I saw the cleaning ladies at my school working, even when teachers and all (the) other female workers were missing,” Gonzalez said. “As they are hired by outsourcing, I’m sure that they weren’t allowed to miss work.” Additionally, Gonzales claimed that many of the male students used the movement to protest gender violence as an excuse to take the day off. He saw that as proof of a lack of support for women among some Mexican women. On the other hand, feminists saw it as one obstacle they would face in their struggle to reduce gender violence.

Still, stopping the killings remains the priority. And even in that endeavor, with their demands and protests, women are taking the lead. On Sunday a massive march against gender-based violence will take place in Mexico City, followed the next day by a rare nationwide women’s strike, promoted under the hashtag #UnDíaSinMujeres (#OneDayWithoutWomen) on social media. Femicide is the murder of a woman simply because she’s a woman. To classify a crime as a femicide, Mexico’s federal criminal code requires that the victim “displays signs of sexual violence,” or the existence of previous threats, evidence of harassment, a history of violent episodes, a romantic relationship, the deprivation of the victim’s freedom or the forced exposure of a person’s body in a public place. In 2019, 1,010 femicides were registered in Mexico by the local authorities, more than double those reported in 2015. The problem is that in many cases women’s murders are simply classified as homicides. And since the vast majority of homicides in Mexico aren’t investigated, that category is like a mass grave. As of the end of January, 40,299 Mexicans had been killed since Mexico’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also known as AMLO, took office on Dec. 1, 2018. These are the highest figures ever recorded in the country. The rise of femicides has contributed to the end of Mr. López Obrador’s nearly 15-month honeymoon period in office, and it has created one of the first true challenges to his government. Sometimes it seems that AMLO, whose approval rate has fallen sharply in recent months, doesn’t know what to do about the issue. Many Mexicans wonder if he has the capacity and a solid plan to face one of the country’s most serious problems: the crime culture that has been pervasive in Mexico for decades. In a 2017 interview, I asked Mr. López Obrador if he was a feminist. Eluding my question, he told me, “Women deserve to go to heaven.” AMLO showed that same ambiguity at a recent news conference, when he recited a vague decalogue of good intentions to confront femicide. “You have to respect women” and, “Machismo is an anachronism, an act of brutality” were among the entries. During another meeting with the press, when a female reporter asked him about his plan to reduce the number of murdered women, he assured her that they were “addressing the causes,” only to fall back into his empty rhetoric right after. “May there be lots of love and no hate,” he said. That same day, the president said that there was no impunity in Mexico. But that is not true: Ninety-three percent of crimes in Mexico went either unreported or uninvestigated in 2018, according to a survey by Mexico’s statistics agency. This is why the proposal put forward by several nonprofits and activists for the creation of a prosecutor’s office specialized in crimes against women is a step in the right direction. In February, after protesters spray-painted slogans against gender-based violence over the facade of the National Palace, President López Obrador asked the feminist groups staging the action to refrain from “painting the doors” of the building, in which he lives and works. Yesenia, Marichuy’s mother, has other plans. “We don’t want to paint your door, sir, we want to kick it down,” she said during our interview. “We want you to listen to us.” And then, almost resigned to the fact that the government won’t take action, she launched a message to other women: “Just as an act of rebellion, let’s stay united. Let’s protect each other. Let’s love each other. And let’s take care of our daughters and our sons, because this government doesn’t care about us.” She knows that, in Mexico, women are killed, and nothing is ever done about it.

People can answer online, by mail or by telephone. Besides English, respondents can answer the census questionnaire in Spanish, simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, Tagalog, Polish, French, Haitian Creole, Portuguese and Japanese. omo médica de familia durante más de 35 años, he tratado a pacientes de todos los ámbitos de la vida, de casi todos los continentes, tanto “documentados” como “indocumentados”, con seguro y sin él, y son estas experiencias las que me han llevado a un fuerte apoyo a Bernie Sanders para presidente. Veo la injusticia de nuestro sistema actual a diario. La abuela que se cae y se disloca el codo, posiblemente fracturándose el hueso, y en agonía tiene que ir a la sala de emergencias. The child whose parents fearfully treat her high fever, wondering if they are doing the right thing by not going to the ER because they have no insurance, and praying that nothing terrible happens until they can get into the office the next day. The young mother who shows up close to her ninth month because she could not afford prenatal care, and thus is now a high risk pregnancy as a result of lack of care. The inequalities are all around me, daily. The simple fact is that in our country if you don’t have lots of money you are far less likely to receive adequate healthcare. Bernie Sanders sees this injustice, and, unlike many other politicians, he actually cares enough to change it. This is why he is the leading advocate of a Medicare for All program that would provide access to healthcare for everyone through a government Medicare-like program that provides equal coverage for everyone. Medicare for All would save both lives and money. A recent study in the leading medical journal Lancet estimated that switching from our current system to a Medicare for All plan like that of Bernie Sanders would save 68,000 lives and 450 billion dollars a year. The cost savings come from the ability of the government, as the insurer, to bargain for cheaper services from medical service providers and pharmaceutical companies, and from the smaller administrative costs that current Medicaid and Medicare programs enjoy relative to private insurers. Just replacing today’s inefficient, profit-oriented, private insurance companies – and the systemwide administrative waste they generate – with a single efficient, humane, nonprofit Medicare

Varios eventos deportivos se han victo afectados por el Coronavirus, la enfermedad que ha puesto en jaque al mundo. Partidos de UEFA Champions League como el Nápoli-Barcelona o el PSGDortmund, se juegan a puerta cerrada para evitar que el virus se propague entre los asistentes. La Liga de España y la Ligue 1, así como algunos partidos de la Bundesliga también se disputarán a puerta cerrada. La Serie A de Italia ha ido más lejos y ha cancelado todos sus partidos hasta por lo menos el 3 de abril. Otros deportes también se han hecho eco al efecto del Coronavirus. El torneo de tenis Indian Wells canceló su edición 2020. La antorcha olímpica será encendida sin público en Italia y la MLB evalúa cancelar o postponer algunos de los juegos. El maratón de Boston también es otro evento que podría ser cancelado.

Pulido, ¿la esperanza de Kansas City?

Alan Pulido volvió a brillar en su segundo partido de la temporada con el Sporting de Kansas City. El delantero mexicano anotó y dio pase de gol en la goleada del equipo de Peter Vermes sobre el Houston Dynamo.

For the 11th straight season and for the 19th time overall, the Big 12 Conference is staging its postseason men’s tournament in the “City of Fountains.” The tournament tipped off with two games Wednesday night (March 11) and concludes March 14 at the Sprint Center. The Big 12 is staging its women’s tournament in Kansas City for the 12th time overall but the first time in eight seasons. Slated to get underway with two games Thursday (March 12) and conclude Sunday (March 15), the tournament returns to Municipal Auditorium after stints in Dallas and Oklahoma City. The last four tournaments were held at Chesapeake Energy Arena. As usual, both tournaments include two Sunflower State schools: the University of Kansas (KU) and Kansas State University (K-State). Here is a look at both schools and both tournaments.

Men’s tournament

*KU: The KU men (28-3 overall), who last played in Kansas City in December 2019, enter the singleelimination tournament as the top seed, fresh off winning their 19th regular-season Big 12 title and 17th in 18 seasons, including co-championships. At press time, the Jayhawks were scheduled to face Wednesday’s

Oklahoma State University-Iowa State University winner Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals. *K-State: The Wildcats, who were the 2018-19 regularseason co-champs with Texas Tech University, finished the 2019-20 regular season 10-21 overall and 3-15 in the conference – last in the Big 12 At press time, they were preparing to open Wednesday night against TCU, with the winner to face second-seeded Baylor University Thursday. Like KU, the K-State men also played a non-conference game in December 2019 in Kansas City.

Women’s tournament

*K-State: After finishing the regular season 16-13 overall and 10-8 in conference play, the Wildcats open postseason play Friday (March 13) against Iowa State University. The program – which has won two regularseason women’s titles, including one co-championship – seeks its first-ever conference postseason title. Like their male counterparts, the K-State women played a non-conference game in December 2019 in Kansas City. *KU: The KU women finished the regular season 15-14 overall, but they were last in the Big 12 at 4-14. Seeking their first-ever postseason title, they open Thursday against seventh-seeded Texas Tech, with the winner to play second-seeded TCU Friday.
