s the nation continues to lift coronavirus pandemic-related restrictions, many people on both sides of the state line in the Kansas City area remain confused about what is open and what is not. Reopening plans have largely been left to the discretion of each county or municipality. In Kansas, Gov. Laura Kelly’s Ad Astra Reopening Plan turned into a guidance document, allowing counties to adopt their own regulations to mitigate the virus spread. Wyandotte County has decided to follow the state’s Phase 2 guidance until June 8. Under the Phase 2 guidelines, there are no mass gatherings of more than 15 people. Businesses can reopen if they maintain at least 6 feet of distance between customers and follow proper cleaning and public health practices. Restaurants can reopen if they can keep individual customers or groups of seated customers separated by at least 6 feet, among other guidelines. Prohibited activities during this phase include fairs and festivals, summer camps and public swimming pools. Johnson County has voted to support the state’s Phase 3 plan through June 11. Under Phase 3, bars, businesses, entertainment venues and churches in the county may reopen at full capacity if they wish. Other elements include limiting mass

Lopez worked as a counselor for the League of United Latin American Citizens National Education Service Center, AT&T and T-Mobile, among other companies. In 2002, he met Michelle Ramirez in Chicago. They began dating and moved to Texas in 2008. Three years later, they got married in McAllen, Texas. Their daughter, Iliana Sofia, was born in 2012. In 2013, Lopez and his family moved back to Kansas City, Missouri. In 2017, he began working with New York Life, where he found his niche.

They are a part of us, our history and who we are. I needed to be there for black people in general. Our united power is not only necessary but it is vital.” Doelling, however, “barely saw any Latinx” protesting, she said. That absence bothered her, particularly considering that about 30% of the Latin community is black. “There are so much racism and colorism in the Latinx community, and it needs to be talked about more. Period,” she said. “We need to unite.” Doelling and her fellow protesters marched as the reopening of Kansas City, Missouri’s lockdown from the coronavirus pandemic continued. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, many demonstrators wore masks, she recalled. Those who did not bring a mask were provided one. Some demonstrators used gloves. According to Doelling, the environment of the protests was mixed. Everything was peaceful until the police stepped in, she said. “I was in shock as I witnessed KCPD make an unlawful aggressive arrest … (of) protesters just using their rights,” she said. Doelling said she saw Kansas City Police Department officers using pepper spray and tear gas on crowds, including protesters with children. “The biggest lesson (for me) was just how real police brutality is and how much our Kansas City black community needs us,” she said. Over the weekend, the police made 151 arrests at the rallies. Most of the arrests were for municipal charges, with one person arrested for a narcotics-related felony, authorities reported. More than 10 people who were arrested were from out of town. Additionally, Jackson County charged four Kansas City residents for stealing clothes from Plaza stores on Saturday night (May 30). There also were reports of officers using tear gas. However, officers also were hit with bottles and rocks on Saturday and Sunday (May 31), with 20 officers injured and two hospitalized. At press time, protesters were continuing to gather across Kansas City, Missouri. Jessica Pitt, a member of Kansas City’s black community, was probably among them. “I just encourage everyone to get uncomfortable! This has never been a fun topic, but I look at it as an invitation to ask questions and dig deeper,” Pitt said. “Don’t get defensive, and if you do find yourself on that end of the stick, … reflect on where you come in as (you address) the problem. Create change, donate where you can and sit with discomfort.” Likewise, Doelling encourages Latinx to step out of their comfort zone, unite and support the protesters. The Kansas City Police Department has expressed support for the protesters, too, in a sense. In response to the criticism of the actions that took place at the protests, the department called the community to participate in a unity march Wednesday (June 3) for human rights and peace. The department worked in conjunction with Mayor Quinton Lucas’ office, the City Council, pastors, churches and other community leaders to stage the march.

I will always uphold the Constitution, my community, and the agency I serve.” On May 25, a national holiday to honor our war dead, four Minneapolis police officers dishonored their badge and betrayed the public trust, the Constitution and their community. They publicly tortured and executed a man before horrified bystanders. Like the rest of the world, we’ve seen the security footage and witness videos of George Floyd begging to breathe. For eight minutes, Floyd lay face down and handcuffed while one officer applied pressure

The man was “awfully drunk” and “not in control of himself,” the store employees said, according to the 911 transcript. Video footage and security tapes don’t show Floyd out of control; he seems calm. Regardless, when George Floyd first told officers that he couldn’t breathe, they had a solemn duty to respond immediately. Instead, they took advantage of the authority vested in them to kill a man. Now, in addition to being attacked by the invisible enemy of the novel coronavirus, American communities are racked by violent civil disturbance, widespread looting and vandalism. The outrage, shame and pain Americans are feeling is understandable and justified. Raising awareness about the need for equal justice is legitimate. Calling out institutionalized racism is valid and necessary. Pushing for police accountability and transparency is, as U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II characterized it, righteous. But wantonly damaging and destroying property isn’t the way to champion the cause of justice for George Floyd and his family, lobby for police accountability and transparency or end, once and for all, institutionalized racism. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas can relate to Floyd as a black man. He acknowledged his personal anguish over what happened to George Floyd. He told Kansas Citians he understands their grief and anger and their fervent desire to prevent future such killings at the hands of law enforcement. At the same time, he reminded demonstrators that Kansas City is home and implored them to express themselves peaceably and respectfully. “Let’s make sure that your message is heard right,” Lucas said. “Let’s make some sort of difference. A difference isn’t making a property owner, including a black property owner, have to clean up the next day.”

“Roberto was always outgoing, friendly, Roberto was always outgoing, friendly, willing to help others, and had a unique way of navigating families through the planning and implementation process for their future – whether it was with investment/retirement/educational accounts or life insurance, he wanted to make sure that families were prepared,” it reads in the obituary put out by the family. Lopez’s love for his family guided his life. He loved his wife and adored his daughter. “(Iliana Sofia) was the sparkle of his eyes,” the official obituary reads. “Iliana softened Roberto with her birth and had a way of wrapping him around her finger to get him to do anything for her.” Lopez’s visitation was held Monday (June 1) at McGilley Memorial Chapel-Midtown and he was laid to rest at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas. Objects that a small number of other people briefly touch, like groceries and shopping bags, seem to present a small risk. “There’s a long chain of events that would need to happen for someone to become infected through contact with groceries, mail, takeout containers or other surfaces,” Julia Marcus, an infectious disease epidemiologist and assistant professor in the Department of Population Medicine at Harvard Medical School, told The New York Times. “The last step in that causal chain is touching your eyes, nose or mouth with your contaminated hand, so the best way to make sure the chain is broken is washing your hands.” The bottom lines is, experts claim the best ways to protect oneself from getting COVID19 — whether through surface transmission or close human contact — remain physical distancing, hand-washing, avoiding facial contact and wearing masks.

navirus (COVID-19). In the United States, Eli Lilly and Co. is working on the first human trials of an antibody therapy designed to treat COVID-19. The results will be known at the end of June. According to CNN, the first COVID-19 patients being treated with the therapy are hospitalized at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine. Researchers expect to see a positive outcome and have a treatment ready for the fall. The treatment was created by efforts between Eli Lilly and AbCellera, a company based in Canada. In addition, Russia claims it has an approved anti-influenza drug to treat COVID-19, called Avifavir, developed by the Russian Direct Investment Fund and ChemRar Group. According to the Russian Health Ministry, Avifavir is a generic version of the Japanese drug Avigan. The Russian Health Ministry claims the medication stops the virus from reproducing. Moreover, trials of Avifavir have shown it can shorten the recovery times from patients with COVID-19. “Avifavir is not only the first antiviral drug registered against (the) coronavirus in Russia, but it is also perhaps the most promising antiCOVID-19 drug in the world,” Kirill Dmitriev, Russian Direct Investment Fund CEO, was quoted by Bloomberg.com as saying. “It was developed and tested in clinical trials in Russia in an unprecedentedly short period of time, enabling Avifavir to become the first registered drug based on Favipiravir in the world.”

No puedo respirar”, suplicaba tirado en el piso, boca abajo, George Floyd, un afroamericano de 46 años. La rodilla de un policía blanco de Minneapolis presionaba su cuello con firmeza. “Por favor, no puedo respirar”. Ese día, el lunes 25 de mayo, Floyd murió. Ni siquiera la pandemia ha podido ocultar el terrible racismo que sigue erosionando a la sociedad estadounidense. Unos días después de la muerte de Floyd, se organizaron protestas civiles en diferentes ciudades de Estados Unidos demandando justicia. El oficial de la rodilla, Derek Chauvin, y otros agentes que lo acompañaban, fueron despedidos y están siendo investigados por el FBI. Chauvin, incluso, ya fue acusado formalmente de homicidio. Esto es posible por un pedazo de evidencia inapelable: un aterrador video de casi 10 minutos. La grabación comienza ya con Floyd en el piso y Chauvin sobre él. Y debemos continuar haciéndolo. No sabemos qué pasó antes del video. La policía de Minneapolis dijo que buscaba a un hombre acusado de falsificar su identidad. Floyd fue encontrado en su auto, obligado a bajar y luego fue esposado. El reporte policíaco original, que fue actualizado, dice que se resistió al arresto y que aparentaba tener un “trastorno médico”. Eso fue fundamental para asignar la responsabilidad de su muerte. “Las imágenes de video citadas en la autopsia es uno de los factores que permiten a los doctores concluir que el ahorcamiento del policía ocasionó la muerte de Garner”, reportó una investigación de The New York Times.

Ambas muertes, la de Eric Garner en Nueva York y ahora la de George Floyd en Minneapolis, son tan parecidas. Ambos mueren luego de un encuentro con la policía. Ambos son asfixiados por uno de los policías. Ninguno de los agentes que son testigos de estos casos de brutalidad policíaca hace nada para impedir su fatal desenlace. Y, afortunadamente, nos podemos enterar de las verdaderas circunstancias de estas muertes debido a dos personas que tuvieron la valentía de grabar todo. La gran diferencia —para que haya un mínimo de justicia— está en que ahora hay millones de teléfonos celulares, desde el tuyo, quizás, estás leyendo esta columna. En una época donde los espacios privados van desapareciendo y en que casi todo queda registrado en alguna red social, el abuso policial contra las minorías difícilmente se puede ocultar. Basta apretar el botón para grabar. Y tener el valor de apuntar, con tu celular, a la policía cuando alguien grita: “No puedo respirar”.

While going through this situation, Junger looked at his dog. It always seemed happy. “(He was) just happy, and I was thinking about all the dogs I had and they were always happy — and I really believe it’s because they come from a place of gratitude,” he said. That is how Junger’s most recent film, “Think Like a Dog,” which he also directed, was born. “Think Like a Dog” follows 12-year-old Oliver (Gabriel Bateman), a tech prodigy whose middle-school science fair experiment goes awry, creating a telepathic connection between him and his furry friend, Henry. The bond brings Oliver and Henry even closer as they join forces to comically overcome complications at school and help Oliver’s parents rekindle their marriage. To portray a genuine bond between Henry and Bateman’s character, the dog trainers made sure that the two spent as much time together off camera as possible. “What that did was, you know, you spent a month with a dog all the time, the dog became comfortable, the dog started to trust, the dog was just happy with him,” Junger said. The film also stars Josh Duhamel and Megan Fox. Junger thinks he got lucky in casting them. “The reason that I got both of them is that they loved the script, they loved the message of the movie, they loved what it was saying about coming from a place of gratitude,” he said.
