attorney, citing concerns about the safety of the community as her key reason for running. “I have concerns that the violent crime that we have is going to undermine all of the steps that we’ve taken forward and I want to fix that,” Bryant said. To do that, Bryant thinks it is essential to partner with service agencies and engage with the community at large. “Instead of just being there as the prosecutor and law enforcement telling people what to do, I think it’s really important to have input from the community on what they need, because if you don’t have that, you’re never going to fix the issues that are actually driving violent crimes,” she said. Bryant moved to Wyandotte County right after finishing law school almost 15 years ago. She also has worked for the Kansas Attorney General in the criminal litigation unit, handling homicide, child sexual abuse and public corruption cases. As an assistant prosecuting attorney, Bryant serves as the trial team leader for the violent crimes unit of the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office. Her vast experience as a prosecutor sets her apart from her opponent, incumbent Mark Dupree, she

Despite fewer operators and a spike in calls, the 3-1-1 Contact Center continues to answer its phones. And to assist Wyandotte County’s diverse community, the center has launched One Conversation at a Time, a multilingual campaign. Lines for meeting medical, social and business assistance needs are available in Spanish, Swahili, Nepali and Hindi. The assistance services are provided by the center, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas, Public Health Department and the University of Kansas Health System. “It’s all about giving direction,” said Guadalupe Tredway, leader of the social line project. “Informing people can save lives. You just need to call 311 and ask for Spanish assistance. They will connect you with someone that can help you.” Tredway, a Mexico City native and the 2020 Kansas Community Health Worker of the Year Award recipient, shared a story from a member of the community who had contacted the center during the pandemic to illustrate the program’s effectiveness. The caller, who was living with her brother’s family after living alone, told Tredway that her sister-in-law had a high temperature. On Sunday (July 12), Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree announced the formal charges against the couple. During the news conference, Dupree encouraged people to speak up if they see child abuse. “I ask you to make the call, to try and help some child, so we won’t have to come to this place again in such a horrible situation,” he said. According to FOX 4 News, the girl’s paternal grandparents said they had tried to get help by contacting the police and church organizations. They all led them to the Kansas Department of Children and Families. They got an email from the department about assigning an investigator to the case and that was it, they claimed. Howard Jansen II, the girl’s grandfather, is calling for capital punishment for his son and the girlfriend, according to FOX 4 News. “They broke her spirit,” he told the news outlet. “I mean, ‘desecration of a corpse?’ What kind of sick person does that? Change my name, I wish I could change his.” The investigation is ongoing. For Bryant, the cornerstone of justice reform is consistency. “One of my focus (points) would be making sure that individuals who are similarly situated are treated consistently, regardless of their race, gender, economic status,” she said. “Right now, there are some drastically different outcomes for different people and that’s not fair.” Bryant also is planning on revamping charging practices to make sure that the cases that are charged can be proved in court, instead of charging every case, as well as changing practices regarding victim notification. Another of Bryant’s objectives is making sure her office feels accessible for all Wyandotte County residents. She hopes to partner with organizations like El Centro Inc. to reach out to the Hispanic community to share what her office does. She also wants to have resources in Spanish and other languages. “I want to make sure that language is never a barrier to justice,” Bryant said. The proposal is part of Bryant’s efforts to create a more inclusive office that she hopes will eventually reflect the community’s diversity. “I want to make sure that the office is representative of the community that it serves, including trying to recruit Hispanic attorneys,” she said. Bryant and Dupree will face off during the Democratic primaries on Aug. 4.

Later on Friday, the president’s deputy press secretary issued a statement, which read in part, “The President has long said he is willing to work with Congress on a negotiated legislative solution to DACA, one that could include citizenship, along with strong border security and permanent merit-based reforms. This does not include amnesty.” The very next day, an alliance of 140-plus major companies and trade associations issued an open letter to the president warning him against revoking DACA. “As large American employers and employer organizations, we strongly urge you to leave the DACA program in place. DACA recipients have been critical members of our workforce, industries and communities for years now, and they have abided by the laws and regulations of our country in order to maintain their DACA status,” the letter read. The Court’s June 18 ruling seemed favorable to the 650,000 or so young DACA recipients who now enjoy temporary protection from deportation and the hundreds of thousands more who are eligible to apply

In other DACA-related news, Trump announced plans during an interview with Noticias Telemundo to sign an immigration bill and that DACA would be part of it. “We’re working out the legal complexities right now, but I’m going to be signing a very major immigration bill as an executive order, which the Supreme Court now, because of the DACA decision, has given me the power to do,” Trump said, as quoted by National Public Radio and other media outlets. To avoid confusion, White House spokesman Judd Deere issued a statement after Trump’s interview. “The president has long said he is willing to work with Congress on a negotiated legislative solution to DACA, one that could include citizenship, along with strong border security and permanent merit-based reforms,” the statement read. “This does not include amnesty. Unfortunately, Democrats have continually refused these offers, as they are opposed to anything other than totally open borders.”

due to COVID-19 and politics!!! The USCIS office and the Immigration Courts closed down in March. They are starting to re-open, but a lay-off looms for August! What does this mean for you? The USCIS office shut down on March 18th. The USCIS office in Kansas City re-opened recently for citizenship interviews. We have permanent residency interviews scheduled for August as well. The fingerprinting/biometrics office has not yet opened, but should start scheduling soon. Masks are required for everyone who enters the office. They are still allowing clients to bring their attorneys and interpreters. You do not have to do your interview alone! The Immigration Court also closed down in March. They continued to process detained cases throughout the shutdown. For clients that are not in detention, their hearings have been re-scheduled to next year. It is very important to pay attention and stay in touch with your lawyer about what is happening in your case. The immigration court in Kansas City has announced several dates for re-opening, but for now, they keep pushing it back. Finally, the USCIS says it is running out of money. They have notified 75% of their employees that they will be laid-off temporarily in August if Congress does not provide more funding. This would dramatically slow things down for immigration cases. We are calling on Congress to provide the funding, but to also create accountability for the agency. It is important to start your case now so that you can get in line. De regreso a México, después del viaje a Washington, Andrés Manuel López Obrador dijo que se había inaugurado una “nueva realidad”, una etapa en la que habría un mejor trato a los inmigrantes mexicanos en Estados Unidos. Por el contrario, las cosas están peor: con su visita llena de elogios y sin defender públicamente a los mexicanos, le permite al

Pero la historia juzgará duramente al Presidente de Estados Unidos por su racismo, sexismo y ataques a los inmigrantes. Y a López Obrador le recordarán siempre que cuando tuvo la oportunidad de enfrentar al bully, decidió no hacerlo y callar. México y Estados Unidos, en palabras de AMLO, tienen una “peculiar convivencia”; a veces son “vecinos distantes” y, otras, “amigos entrañables”. Hay pocas relaciones en el planeta tan disparejas. Por eso, ante el poderío estadounidense, la única fórmula que funciona es la dignidad, la sabiduría y el ingenio del mexicano. En el pasado, López Obrador ha enfrentado con valentía y agallas a los personajes más poderosos, peligrosos y deleznables de la política mexicana. Por lo mismo sorprendió su tibieza y sus elogios a Trump, quien tanto ha maltratado e insultado a los inmigrantes

más de medio millón— que su gobierno quiere deportar o que los estudiantes mexicanos en Estados Unidos vean como una gentileza las nuevas medidas que los podrían dejar sin visa. El Presidente de México tampoco dijo la verdad cuando le aseguró a Trump: “Usted nunca ha buscado imponernos nada”. De hecho, el mandatario estadounidense amenazó con imponer aranceles de hasta el 25 por ciento a productos mexicanos si López Obrador no detenía las caravanas de centroamericanos cruzando por su territorio. México, que sufre un terrible problema de violencia, tuvo que destinar numerosos elementos de la Guardia Nacional, creada recientemente, a realizar labores migratorias. Otra imposición de Trump fue dejar en territorio mexicano a decenas de miles de refugiados centroamericanos que buscan asilo en Estados Unidos. Esto va en contra de la política de antiguos gobiernos estadounidenses de recibir por razones humanitarias a quienes huyen de la violencia y la pobreza extrema. AMLO se ha convertido

en el policía migratorio de Trump. No fue la única sorpresa de la reunión. Ninguno de los dos presidentes —tan diestros en las redes sociales y tan dispuestos a las conferencias de prensa— dedicó tiempo a responder preguntas de los periodistas. Ni una sola. Es probable que temieran que le preguntaran a López Obrador si todavía consideraba a Trump un racista, como lo llamó en 2017. O que le preguntaran a Trump si México iba a pagar por su muro, como aseguró a principios de año. Entre lo positivo hay que resaltar que AMLO, magistralmente, ha evitado conflictos con Trump y que logró que el T-MEC se firmara. También, es un poderoso mensaje de austeridad y sencillez que viaje con su comitiva en un vuelo comercial. Hay sólo unos pocos presidentes o primeros ministros en el mundo que han hecho lo mismo. Y hay que apuntar el caluroso y emotivo recibimiento que López Obrador obtuvo de muchos inmigrantes mexicanos que voluntariamente lo fueron a ver frente al monumento de Benito Juárez en Washington. El Presidente mexicano, sin duda, sabe manejar los símbolos.

“Fallaron los pronósticos: no nos peleamos”, dijo López Obrador en un discurso antes de la cena con empresarios. Y tenía razón. “Somos amigos y vamos a seguir siendo amigos”. El problema es que esa amistad personal no beneficia en nada a la “comunidad de cerca de 38 millones de personas” —como dijo el propio AMLO— que nacieron en México o son de origen mexicano y viven en Estados Unidos. La “nueva realidad” para los inmigrantes en Estados Unidos a la que se refirió AMLO no existe. Los ataques de Trump contra los extranjeros han sido constantes. Ya separó a familias en la frontera y hasta puso a niños en jaulas. Y en la actual campaña presidencial no dejará de atacar a los inmigrantes y de promover su nuevo muro en la frontera. Trump sigue siendo el mismo y es un error creer que va a cambiar sólo porque AMLO lo dice. El mal augurio —de una pelea entre AMLO y Trump— no se cumplió. Pero los que pierden son los inmigrantes mexicanos, los dreamers y los estudiantes extranjeros. El que podía hablar por ellos y defenderlos decidió quedarse callado. Y todo por una foto.

The underestimation is attributed to gaps in the data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The gap comes from the CDC’s dependence on local agencies and how they collect data about every person who tests positive. Still, case data from the CDC shows that Latinos, who make up 18% of the population, account for 17% of COVID-19 cases. Among the reasons why Latinos and other communities of color are contracting the virus at higher rates than whites include higher rates of underlying health conditions, such as diabetes, asthma, hypertension and obesity; greater likelihood of being uninsured; greater likelihood of working in the service industries, like retail and food service; and greater likelihood of living in housing situations not suitable for maintaining social distancing or self-isolating, such as multigenerational families or low-income and public housing. Juliann Van Liew, Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas, Public Health Department health director, recently spoke about this issue. Van Liew also discussed trying to raise awareness among the Latino community in Wyandotte County and other Kansas City areas communities. “We’ve seen a serious uptick in cases among the Latinx population in the last few weeks,” she said during a recent interview with Dos Mundos. In Wyandotte County, as of this writing, Hispanics made up about 38% (1,203 cases) of the 3,151 confirmed cases in the county. “We’re concerned and we want to make sure that that community has all the information they need,” Van Liew said. “This is a safe space to come get tested if they’re experiencing any symptom at all or if they have been around anybody who has COVID.” Van Liew’s office is working to keep spreading information out about preventive guidelines, such as wearing a mask, washing hands frequently and maintaining the 6-feet distancing. “Those really simple behavior changes do more good than people can even realize, so we ask for the community’s help with that,” she said. On June 18, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly ordered a statewide mandate that requires people to wear face masks in public spaces, including public and private offices where more than one individual is congregating.
