He was a community activist and an advocate for those who had been treated unfairly or unjustly. Camacho was a deeply Catholic man, too, being a 4th-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and an active member of St. John Francis Regis Parish. He also loved his family. “Tino was a proud father and grandfather,” his obituary states. “He was his grandchildren’s biggest fan and supporter of their goals and dreams.” Camacho is survived by his wife of 50 years, Katherine Camacho; children, Florentino “Tino” Camacho III and wife Nikki, Fabian Camacho and wife Jean, Regina Klepikow and husband Jason; grandchildren, Michael Camacho, Alyssa Bushman and husband Grant, Natalya Klepikow, Brooke Camacho, Mia Eakins and Angel Camacho; greatgranddaughter, Victoria Jean Bushman; and sisters, Maria Elena Macal, Rosa Macal, Sylvia Martinez and Alicia Mendez. A visitation was held on Tuesday (Aug. 18) at St. John Francis Regis Parish, followed by a rosary and a Mass of Christian burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Avalos, who attends Indian Woods Middle School in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, will be a seventh-grader this year. She is among those students who will take classes online. Because of the coronavirus outbreak, the Shawnee Mission School District is offering in-class and virtual learning options, as most school districts are. Avalos finished last school year through distance learning. In March, when her parents told her she would not go back to school the rest of the spring semester, she felt “sad and unhappy,” she said. Avalos’ mother decided to continue with the online program. The 12-year-old does not like taking classes at home because she “misses seeing friends and learning in class,” she said. Even though Avalos talks with her friends every day, she longs to see them and her teachers in person, she said. Still, the girl said she was excited about “meeting new friends.” Now, however, she must do so through a screen. Like many other children across

Case data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that Latinos, who are 18% of the population, account for 17% of COVID-19 cases. Chavez-Bueno cites the difficulty in accessing medical care on time as one of the main reasons for this data. “Many do not have a doctor they see frequently or they want to avoid medical costs; but the thing is, health is the most important,” she said. “It is harder to help (them) the longer they wait to see a doctor.” Chavez-Bueno suggests calling a doctor or health department as soon as they develop symptoms. Some people are more reticent to seek help for fear of getting sent over to immigration officials. Chavez-Bueno denies this is the case. “Legally, (as) doctors, we don’t have a way to access the immigration system to share patient information,” she said. “They should be rest assured that they should focus on their health without worrying about immigration consequences.” In June, Julian Van Liew, Unified Government Public Health Department health director, said her department had seen a “serious uptick” in cases among the Latino population in Wyandotte County, Kansas, where Hispanics made up about 44.3% (2,371 cases) of all 5,346 confirmed cases. Olarte warns that, though most children are asymptomatic and those who have symptoms tend to have mild cases of the virus, parents should still be aware of a late presentation of symptoms that occurs in children, known as the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. “What we know so far is that it’s like an exaggerated inflammation of different organs in the body that presents in children two to four weeks after getting the virus or went though the acute phase of the virus,” Olarte said. Olarte emphasizes that this is a rare condition, but that parents should know about it. It generally presents itself as gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea and stomachaches. Parents should take their kids to the doctor immediately if they display those symptoms. With the school year about to start, Olarte suggests parents review a guidance document that Children’s Mercy Hospital has created for schools. “Even though it’s a guide for schools, parents can go to our website and review it,” she said. “It could help parents decide whether to send their kids back to school.” Chavez-Bueno and Olarte both encourage the Latino community to follow safety guidelines such as wearing a mask, maintaining social distancing and frequent hand-washing.

Education experts report that the lack of in-person interaction among students and teachers because of the pandemic might cause stress for children. They emphasize that it is important for parents and teachers to acknowledge the anxiety that students might be feeling. Experts also emphasize that it is important for adults to encourage children to stay creative. Avalos heeded that advice during the spring semester lockdown. When she felt bored, she drew and spent time with her family. And this semester, the girl has plans for how to spend her time when she is not taking online classes. She loves to be on her phone and play around with her brother, she said. Technology, however, poses a few challenges for the girl as a new school year approaches – for instance, Wi-Fi issues. But Avalos sees some perks about online classes. One of them is that she can study anywhere in the house and be more comfortable than she would in a classroom. Classes are scheduled to begin for Avalos and her fellow seventh-graders – along with Shawnee Mission students in grades 1-6, 9 and 12, on Sept. 8 – district information states. The first day for grades 8, 10 and 11 is Sept. 9. Pre-K and kindergarteners start Sept. 10. Avalos and other youngsters enter the school year as health information on children and the coronavirus continues to evolve – something it has done since the outbreak. Data from health professionals suggest that children are less likely to become infected by the virus. Still, they are considered at risk of getting sick. Additionally, health care experts and others in positions of authority have not developed specific solutions to protect teachers, many of whom may be at high risk.

The coronavirus doesn’t discriminate. It’s a potentially deadly infection that affects everyone regardless of fame, wealth, age, race, gender, social status, religion … As of Aug. 17, nearly 5.5 million people in the U.S. have been infected with the virus, according to Johns Hopkins University. On Tuesday alone, the five-county Kansas City metro reported one coronavirus death and 293 new cases pushing the total to 26,085. Officials are so concerned that Dr. Deborah Birx, the president’s top coronavirus advisor was here last weekend. She met at the University of Kansas Medical Center in KCK with community and state health officials. Now is the time for Kansans to stop the spread of the virus doing “common-sense things, she told officials and reporters. Birx stressed the urgency of wearing masks indoors and outdoors and avoiding bars, indoor public dining and group gatherings. he U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is warning it cannot guarantee that all ballots cast by mail for the Nov. 3 elections will arrive in time to be counted, even if they are mailed by state deadlines. This situation is raising the possibility that millions of voters could be disenfranchised in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, which has led many Americans to vote by mail, instead of heading to polling places on Election Day. Although the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends mail-in ballots to vote without risking exposure to the coronavirus at the polls, President Trump has claimed that mail-in ballots are fraudulent. There is no evidence of widespread fraud when voting by mail, according to numerous nationwide and state-level studies. On Aug. 13, Trump acknowledged he was blocking aid to the USPS to prevent the expansion of voting by mail. Unlike other government agencies, the USPS does not run on taxpayer money, relying instead on revenues from mail and packages, and other services. Since 2006, mail volume has dropped by 60%, according to NBC News. That decline has led to $78 billion in losses in recent years, according to a May analysis by the U.S. Government Accountability Office. In addition, a law passed in 2006 required the USPS to pre-fund the pensions for all employees going 75 years into the future, a move that experts say will cost around $72 billion and is not required by any other federal agency or private company. In May, the White House appointed Republican megadonor Louis DeJoy to be the first postmaster general in more than 20 years to not come from within the agency’s ranks. Since then, DeJoy has implemented several new measures, such as decommissioning more than 600 mail-sorting machines ahead of the presidential election. Mark Meadows, Trump’s chief of staff, said no more would be extracted from the service ahead of the election. DeJoy also cut overtime, late delivery trips and other expenses to ensure mail arrives at its destination on time. The result has been a national slowdown of mail. Delivery times on everything from postcards to medicines have already slowed. Congress has recalled lawmakers to Washington to address the growing crisis. DeJoy announced Tuesday (Aug. 18) that he is suspending certain changes—including closing of mail processing facilities, moving mail processing equipment and cutting overtime—at USPS until after the election.

or actor Bobby Soto, his latest project, F “The Tax Collector,” became personal in more ways than he had imagined.

The latest film by writer/director David Ayer — known for writing films such as “Training Day” and “Suicide Squad” — stars Soto as a “tax collector” working for a local crime lord. His character finds his family’s safety compromised when his boss’ rival shows up in Los Angeles and upends his business. Soto’s relationship with Ayer started years before this movie. By coincidence, Soto met Ayer because they attended the same dojo a few years before the movie. He did not know who Ayer was, at first. “We hung out and became real friends,” Soto recalled. When Ayer told Soto about this script he was working on, Soto was excited to have the chance to work with him. “It just gave me more inspiration and more enthusiasm because I was working with someone I was friends with,” he said. Yet the best part of working on this film was the “intimacy” and authenticity of the story, Soto said. “It became like a real fun time to be with my friends and connecting with the intimacy of the story — and what these people are going through and the characters and the lives that they’re living — because I have seen those things first-hand and I’ve experienced things where you have to break these cycles that you’re a part of,” he said. Soto grew up in the Los Angeles area, something he has in common with Ayer and his costar, Shia LaBeouf. Ayer’s script managed to capture the authenticity of living in that area of Los Angeles, he said.
