Cervantes and his wife started Wyandotte Angels after realizing there was a need in the community for their organization. When the pandemic hit, they started volunteering with three programs offering food drives. “My wife and I realized that, in between food drives, people were still hungry, so we decided to create this group,” he said. But they not only provide food. They also provide items that include clothing and furniture. The group does not accept any cash exchanges, only goods.

day painting six Black Lives Matter murals on Kansas City streets. Believed to be the largest project of its kind, KC Art on the Block spans 2,000 feet of street. It involved an estimated of 1,000 volunteers and hundreds of gallons of paint. Each mural features “Black Lives Matter” in big block letters. Six local Black artists filled in those letters with their own designs. “It’s amazing because it’s the first of its kind in the nation, but this one is being resonated with healing, what it takes to make people come together and support each other,” Michael Toombs, director of art, told Fox 4 News. “That’s what we want this project to be.” The murals are at the following locations: 10th and Baltimore, 63rd and Troost, 63rd and Brookside, Briarcliff and

Dr. Larry Botts, chief medical officer of AventHealth Shawnee Mission, said it has been a “very emotional and stressful period” for hospital staff the past few weeks. “Our greatest source of anxiety is that we will experience a surge which overwhelms our system and will be unable to care for our patients,” Botts said. The Kansas City area is averaging 331 new cases each day. Kansas has a 16% positivity rate and Missouri has a 13.6% rate, according to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. That puts both states under “red zones,” defined by the White House Coronavirus Task Force as having at least 10% of COVID-19 tests coming back positive. Both states’ trends are running opposite to national trends, which show declines in new cases since late July. During a recent visit to Kansas City, Dr. Deborah Birx of the White House Coronavirus Task Force warned that Kansas City trend data and lax attitudes toward mitigation were similar to those in other parts of the country with significant case spikes.

Officially created on Aug. 1, Wyandotte Angels already has 750 members, including people from out-of-county and even out-of-state. “The drive behind us is the community; they are the ones helping us with providing the food, the clothes and everything,” Cervantes said. “We’re just like the middle person, and that’s what we want. We want the community to be a part of this, to come together as one.” The organization has a public Facebook group, where anyone can join and reach out, whether for donating, volunteering or even requesting help. “There’s never any questions asked; we don’t ask for ID, we don’t ask for anything,” Cervantes said. “It’s just people that need help – and that’s what we’re here for.” To keep things transparent, Cervantes and his wife post on the Facebook group every time they make a delivery. They expect to continue growing their network to find those who are in need. “Our community here in Kansas City, Kansas, and Wyandotte County, they have a big heart and a lot of them didn’t know how to help; and we’ve heard that, instead of donating to these big corporations, they much rather do something here locally and … know where everything is going,” Cervantes said. Wyandotte Angels is not the only way Cervantes helps the community. For almost 14 years, he has served as a youth mentor at the juvenile detention center, helping youth transition back to their home schools. fate: Both lost long battles with colon cancer and died young. Guillermo was barely 50, Chadwick was 43. His death on Aug. 28 offers a stark reminder of the urgency of continuing to get regular health checkups and screenings during the pandemic. “Putting off care and putting off screening really does have some serious detrimental effects,” AMA board members warned at their Sept. 8 virtual symposium. The pandemic wasn’t a factor in getting colon cancer screenings when Guillermo and Chadwick were first diagnosed. It is a factor now. Fearing exposure to Covid-19, increasingly more people are putting off routine health checkups and screenings; unfortunately, doctors say, many of the procrastinators are at higher risk for colon and other cancers, hypertension or diabetes. Continuing to get regular health checkups and screenings takes on greater urgency. According to the National Institutes of Health, Americans who have a chronic health condition are at greater risk of severe illness from Covid-19; 85 percent of older adults have at least one chronic health condition and 60 percent have at least two chronic health conditions, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC). My brother Guillermo, the youngest and smartest of seven siblings, and Chadwick, a rising star, didn’t have to die. Colon cancer is one of the few cancers that is preventable if it’s detected early enough. Two years ago, the American Cancer Society updated guidelines for screening, lowering the age to 45 at which adults at average risk should start regular colorectal screenings. It isn’t only cancer screenings that are as critical during the pandemic. The importance of regular health exams and testing can’t be overstated. They can reveal problems early before symptoms appear and the odds are greatest for recovery. Early detection is key. Delaying well-child visits, immunizations and booster shots, preventative screenings and routine checkups that reveal blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels and more is potentially dangerous and could be fatal. The regular flu season is just around the corner, and public health officials are bracing for a “second wave” of Covid-19. It’s more important than ever to observe safety protocols and social distancing and stay well. We do that by being proactive: eating healthy, nutritious food; getting enough sleep; exercising regularly; and scheduling regular physical exams during which discussions with the doctor on maintaining a healthy lifestyle can take place in a stress-free atmosphere. A cautionary tale about regular cancer screenings are part of the legacy of Guillermo Rodriguez and Chadwick Boseman. Let’s honor them by putting it to good use. Artist Avrion Jackson, the artist behind the 10th and Baltimore mural, said the movement is important every day. “I want everyone to know that this isn’t a one-day thing. … It should matter every day,” Jackson said, according to The Kansas City Star. In August, the Kansas City Council voted 12-1 in support of the project, with a resolution saying that the city “recognizes the importance and significance of the Black Lives Matter movement.” The city did not pay for the murals, but it did help with controlling traffic and closing streets to get the projects done. Donations paid for supplies and the artists’ time. The murals are the first piece of a threepiece project to create murals throughout the city. The next piece is the painting of vertical Black Lives Matters on walls. The last piece is to create a blueprint for others to add murals to their own neighborhood streets.

The Kansas City, Kansas, scholarship recipient is Brian Garcia-Sandoval for $5,000. Brian attended Sumner Academy of Arts & Science and is enrolled at Kansas State University. In order to further assist this year ’s HACER National Scholarship winners navigate the pandemic’s impact on education, McDonald’s is equipping each of them with a “tech backpack” that includes a laptop, wireless mouse, and headphones – some of the tools needed to succeed in a virtual learning environment. While the cost of education is usually the largest barrier for Hispanic students in pursuing college degrees, this year the pandemic has also exposed a technology access gap that has placed low-income, Hispanic students at a disadvantage. A McKinsey survey conducted in April 2020 found only 56 percent of students from low-income households report having reliable internet access and just 45 percent report that their home environment could support remote learning. As educational institutions have accelerated the shift to remote learning and online classes, many Hispanics students lack access to digital devices and internet connectivity at home, further widening educational disparities. MIAMI — Cada cuatro años, sin excepción, los dos principales partidos políticos de Estados Unidos tratan de enamorar a los electores latinos para que voten por su candidato a la presidencia. El objetivo es claro: sin latinos no hay Casa Blanca. Es un ritual predecible y, muchas veces, cargado de cinismo y ambición política. Es como si el Partido Republicano y el Partido Demócrata nos redescubrieran cada cuatro años para, luego, olvidarse de nosotros hasta la siguiente elección. MIAMI — Every four years, without fail, the two mainstream political parties try to win over Latino voters for their respective presidential candidates. The reason is clear: There is no route to the White House without the support of Latinos. This wooing is carried out with cynicism and fueled by the political ambitions of all concerned. Republicans and Democrats alike seem to rediscover us every four years, then forget about us until the next election. It’s such an open and flagrant display of opportunism that some people have called it the Christopher Columbus syndrome. Historically, Latinos are more likely to vote for Democrats than for Republicans. According to a survey published by Latino Decisions in August, 66 percent of those registered to vote lean toward Joe Biden this year, compared to 24 percent who favor President Trump. If Mr. Trump can’t attract more Latino voters, he is likely to lose the election. Given the growing number of Latino voters, the courting process has also become more sophisti-

But regardless of who wins on Nov. 3, Latinos will shape the future. In 2020, the ritual is in full effect. President Trump boasted about the record low unemployment rates among Latinos before the pandemic. And a naturalization ceremony at the White House was featured during the Republican National Convention, showcasing Mr. Trump’s alleged commitment to America’s newcomers. This stands in sharp contrast with his administration’s actions: constant attacks on immigrants; separating more than 5,000 children from their parents at the Mexican border, even detaining some in cages; and trying to end protections for the 700,000 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients. More recently Mr. Trump has taken to calling immigrants murderers and rapists again. No wonder one of those newly sworn-in Americans who attended the White House ceremony, Robert Ramírez, originally from Bolivia, wasn’t willing to say he would vote for Mr. Trump. “I will vote,” he told Univision, “but my vote is private.” Democrats are also good at making promises, and lots of them. Their nominee has pledged something millions of Latino immigrants have been waiting decades for. “This is my promise to you,” Mr. Biden posted on Twitter. “On Day 1, I’ll send a bill to Congress that creates a clear road map to citizenship for Dreamers and 11 million undocumented people who are already strengthening our nation. It’s long overdue.” Yet when Mr. Biden was serving as vice president, the Obama administration not only failed to offer comprehensive immigration reform, it deported over three million undocumented citizens. Mr. Biden’s promise is fundamental to making right that mistake and winning back the trust of the Latino community. Even so, those who think Democrats take Latino votes for granted remain wary, which could hurt turnout for Mr. Biden. This year, a projected 32 million Latinos will be eligible to vote, making them the largest racial or ethnic minority ever to participate in a presidential election. And for the first time, Latinos will outnumber Black voters, according to the Pew Research Center. The power of Latino voters is evident in states such as Florida and Arizona. Had the Latino turnout been higher in those states in 2016, Mr. Trump might not be president. But over half of all Latinos eligible to vote didn’t do so, and consequently history was written in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Despite the racist insults he hurled at Mexican immigrants during his last campaign (“They are bringing drugs. They are bringing crime. They’re rapists.”) Mr. Trump won 28 percent of the Latino vote. Though not even close to the 66 percent that voted for Hillary Clinton, it was enough to win him the election. Clearly, even insults couldn’t convince that small slice of the Latino electorate that Mr. Trump, who promised economic opportunity, a wall and a crackdown on dictatorships in Cuba and Venezuela, was unfit for office. I myself have surfed the great Latino wave. When I arrived in the United States in the early 1980s, fewer than 15 million Latinos lived in this country; now we number more than 60 million. And in less than three decades we will be at 100 million, according to estimates. These numbers mean no candidate will be able to achieve power in the United States without Latino support. Karl Rove, chief adviser to President George W. Bush, understood this perfectly. In 2004, Mr. Bush won 44 percent of the Latino vote, more than any other Republican presidential candidate ever. It was the first time Republicans tried to divide the Latino vote and prove the phrase attributed to Ronald Reagan: “Latinos are Republican. As a candidate in 2016, Mr. Trump announced he would build his wall at the border, and that Mexico would pay for it. This is not how to win the hearts of Latinos. The Latino vote is increasingly powerful, diverse and sophisticated. And in exchange for that vote, which can make or break a president, the Latino community expects concrete benefits. A few words in Spanish and a few empty promises are no longer enough. At the end of the day, more than expecting Democrats and Republicans to pay attention to the major issues that concern Hispanics — jobs, education for their children, health insurance, immigration — it’s about having more political representation so that no one has to speak for us. We are more than 18 percent of the population and yet there are only four Latino senators. The reality in United States politics today is that we have the power to open or close the doors to the White House. When it comes to Latino voters, this is the new meaning of that old campaign ritual.

Fiestas Patrias are days for Latin American countries to celebrate not only their independence from Spanish or Portuguese colonization, but also their national heritage and culture, as Susana Gonzalez will attest. “Whenever I think of Fiestas Patrias, I think of culture and celebration,” said Gonzalez, a Lee’s Summit, Missouri, resident. “I enjoy explaining to my friends how we celebrate Independence Day back in Mexico.” During the Fiestas Patrias, families get together with friends and celebrate with food, beverages and traditions that remind them of their heritage and traditions. Sometimes, there are special events involved. For example, on Sept. 15, Mexicans celebrate Mexican Independence Day by watching “El Grito” (“The Shout” in English), a ceremony hosted each in downtown Mexico City by the president from the balcony at Palacio Nacional, followed by fireworks, music and other festivities. Families that cannot go to Palacio Nacional often celebrate with a dinner at home and by watching “El Grito” on television. Other countries that celebrate Independence Day on Sept. 15 are El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. This year, however, observances of Fiestas Patrias may be different because of the pandemic. Many celebrations will be hosted virtually or in small groups.

Assistance program (LWA) received federal approval and an award of $63 million to assist Kansans who have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “I appreciate the Federal Emergency Management Agency for its quick response to my administration’s application, and for making these funds available to those who need them throughout our state and nation,” Kelly said. “We will work to distribute these dollars as quickly and efficiently as possible to keep Kansas families in their homes and food on their tables.” Acting Secretary of Labor Ryan Wright called on Congress to find a permanent solution. “This program is not a permanent solution, and during these difficult times we implore Congress to come together and act to fund permanent unemployment solutions for all individuals and families in need across the country,” he said. The program is limited in scope and, due to federal restrictions, will only be available to those who are receiving at least $100 in unemployment benefits. The implementation of the LWA program will take several weeks to execute, and the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) estimates that claimants will begin receiving benefits no sooner than late September. Unlike the $600 a week Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program that expired in July, a claimant must selfcertify her or his unemployment or partial unemployment is due to disruptions caused by COVID-19. For those who are eligible, payments will be retroactive to the week ending Aug. 1, and will remain in effect until FEMA terminates the program. On Aug. 8, President Donald Trump issued an executive memorandum authorizing the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to expend up to $44 billion from its Disaster Relief Fund to provide lost wage assistance to Americans receiving unemployment benefits. Kelly proposed the $400 option for LWA as a way to get additional money into the hands of unemployed Kansans.
