any Kansas City area basketball fans know the name Earl Watson Jr. What they might not know is, Watson is Latino. Watson, a native of Kansas City, Kansas, is the son of Earl and Estella Watson Sr. Way before she took the name surname Watson, Estella woke up at 2 a.m. to work in the fields until early in the afternoon, before it got too hot. As the daughter of undocumented Mexican immigrants, Estella was used to working hard. Her parents — who moved to the United States to escape warfare in Mexico — and siblings all worked on a farm in Texas. “In those days, Mom and Dad did not think of school,” she recalled. “It was all about working and living, since they didn’t speak English, so they put us to work.” The family eventually settled in Kansas City, Kansas. Her father worked multiple jobs, as did the rest of the family. “I started working in laundry and then got a job in stores. … I started working at 14,” she said. “To my children, I told them they

He grew up in a Black neighborhood, but he was raised in a “very Mexican” household, he said. “I think my mom did an amazing job raising our family, raising the kids with my dad and instilling that Latino pride that, no matter what the challenges are and the things you have to overcome, you just always stay grounded and continue to work and outwork people to get more and more opportunities,” he said. “I took those lessons and I put … (them) into basketball, I put … (them) into school.” Although Earl Jr. never met his maternal grandfather, his mother always talked about him. “And that made me feel like I knew him — and so, I always wanted to make her proud, because I felt like in a way, I could make him proud if I made her proud,” he said. Because of his success, Earl Jr. has created multiple youth programs in Kansas City, Kansas, and Los Angeles. During his basketball career, Earl Jr. has dealt with his share of negative comments. He thinks that hateful rhetoric against the Latinx community comes from a place of fear of the talent Latinos have. “The hatred that we (experience) is a testament to how strong and creative and brilliant we are as a race of Latino people,” he said. “Everyone knows that, if you compete against a Latino, you are not going to outwork them. You can only hope to work as hard as them.”

Additionally, the STEM-focused Rolla campus will offer students, faculty and staff additional training opportunities on diversity initiatives. Community leaders across the country lead the informative discussions. They’re open to everyone. To help prevent someone that you think is having suicidal thoughts from committing or attempting suicide, the key is to communicate. Open up to that person. Be willing to listen to how the person feels. Remember, that person needs your support; therefore, it is important that the person feels you are concerned. In addition, avoid judging or lecturing the person. And try to motivate the person to seek professional help. If you want to help someone who is suicidal, there is a suicide prevention line – the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The line is confidential and bilingual. The number is 1-(800)-273-8255. Do not delay in reaching out to help someone. Remember, there is no better time than now.

uadalupe Centers Inc. (GCI) anunció que uno de sus eventos de recaudación de fondos será en línea este año. La Gala de Premios Blanco y Negro será virtual para su edición 2020. El evento, que se celebrará el 30 de octubre, incluirá oradores, una subasta silenciosa y entretenimiento. Este año, también rendirá un homenaje especial al Día de Muertos. La Gala Blanco y Negro es el evento de gala de GCI. Generalmente, comienza las festividades del Mes de la Herencia Hispana (15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre) en el área de Kansas City. Sin embargo, este año, debido a la pandemia, el evento virtual se llevará a cabo después del Mes de la Herencia Hispana. t is natural to fear the unknown. Unfortunately, the unknown is part of daily life during the coronavirus pandemic. Unknown or not-easily-understood dangers or circumstances can increase a person’s anxiety levels. Here are some tips to help you to deal with the anxiety of these uncertain times: *Focus on the present: Take each day step by step. Instead of worrying about what will happen, stay focused on the here and now. Remember, no one knows what will happen over the long term, including when life will go back to the way it was before the pandemic. *Do not overthink: The mind is a powerful part of the human body. Sometimes, it can be overpowering, as is evident when we humans overthink matters. Most of the time, overthinking will drain you emotionally and physically much more than the situation that causes the overthinking. Take a step back and try to let your worries pass without focusing on them too much. And remember, just because you are thinking something might happen, does not mean it will happen. *Establish a routine with good habits: Get enough sleep. Exercise. Eat well. Those three habits will help protect both your mental health and your immune system. *Communicate: Sharing your worries with others will help you realize that many people are experiencing the same feelings you are. Even a text message, phone call or video call will make a difference. *Take deep breaths and focus on the positive: Deep breaths will help you calm down. Try to focus on the parts of life that make you feel relaxed. Look at the beauty amid the difficulties in life.

However, Taylor emphasizes that people do not need to be owners to shop there. “Everyone is welcome to shop and anyone can choose to become an owner,” Taylor said. “Ownership is a one-time, fully refundable investment of $75.” The store also offers a Merc Share ownership — a $10, one-time investment for those on food assistance. There are benefits to ownership, including exclusive discounts and being allowed to run for and vote in the board elections. Because of the pandemic, the store has changed its hours. Since Monday (Sept. 14), the hours are from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. — opening and closing an hour later than normal. “The pandemic has cut back on the amount of folks working downtown, so we’re not seeing those morning sales, … but we are seeing folks wanting to shop a little bit later into the night,” Taylor said. So far, the feedback received from this store has been positive, Taylor said. The pandemic has caused less traffic than originally anticipated because many people are still working from home or furloughed. “We’re seeing that that is affecting the forecast in sales, and so, we’re working really hard to figure out how to bring people in and let them … shop with us,” she said. Ultimately, having a store like The Merc in Kansas City, Kansas, is important to expanding the ideas of cooperative ownership and community-owned stores. “It’s not just about us coming to Kansas City and this location being important; but it’s (also) about the co-op being a part of the community, and the community wanting to buy in and be a part of the co-op, so that folks feel empowered,” she said.

eople who have lost their jobs during the coronavirus pandemic are trying to find new ways to make money – and “scammers” are trying to take advantage of them. “Fake job scams have existed for a long time, but technology has made this scam easier and more lucrative,” the FBI stated in a warning to Americans. “Cybercriminals now pose as legitimate employers by spoofing company websites and posting fake job openings on popular online job boards.” More than 20 million people in the United States have filed for unemployment since the pandemic started, statistics show. Usually, job scammers request a person’s bank account information, money, and/ or personal information over the email or over the phone. Anyone who receives such requests is advised speak with a human resources department employee with the company and complete the hiring process before providing any personal information. Legitimate companies usually do not request personal information until they are ready to finalize a hire. In addition, job seekers are advised to check job descriptions before applying. Legitimate job openings will describe the duties related to the job. They also are usually free of typos. Fake job postings usually have errors in the text. Job seekers also are advised to check company websites and call prospective employers to make sure they are legitimate. Employment-related websites like LinkedIn or Glassdoor also can help confirm a company’s legitimacy. Comparing the compensation and benefits of the prospective employer with other companies is another strategy to avoid falling victim to job scammers. A rule of thumb is, if it appears too good to be true, it probably is. Job seekers who suspect they are being scammed are advised to file a report to the local authorities, so they can be aware of what is happening.
