I’ve never been about political fights; I’m really about trying to bring people together and work on the really important issues that matter to Kansas families like health care and small business support and making sure that we get an economy strong enough to have people have jobs, and jobs that pay a living wage. DM: Which are your top three priorities? BB: This isn’t about what my priorities are. My job is to bring forward what Kansas’ priorities are. That is what we’re doing, serving the people, and the No. 1 issue that I’ve heard across the state is affordable health care and accessibility to health care. The next most common issue is access to broadband. That we have to have this everywhere in the state for all people. It’s kind of like electricity now; it is a need that we all have for tele-school, telework, telemedicine. … We have to have that infrastructure in the state. And last but not least is the issue of value, and that is to bring people together, working together. People are so tired of this fighting and partisanship. You can look right at my logo on my sign, I have … red and blue lines intertwining. We’re riding with blue and we’re supposed to be building something together and finding common ground. DM: What’s the best way to address these issues? BB: Again, we gotta work together. What’s going on right now in Washington is that the leadership, particularly of the Senate, has blocked potentially every bill from moving forward … and we fought the same thing in Kansas with our Senate president. Government of, by and for the people means bringing forward what the people want. Like in Kansas, Medicaid expansion, 80% of Kansans support that and yet we couldn’t even bring a bill to the floor. So how do we make that happen? We elect people who want to work together. DM: In the current political climate, how do you plan to move above partisanship and work together? BB: First, let’s start with my history. I have an 11-year record of doing just that and can point to so many different examples. One in particular was ending the Brownback tax experiment. It took Republicans and Democrats to come together and stop that. I was part of that coalition; I’m very proud of getting our state moving forward and have always been a person that will be at the table to listen, not just to respond but to understand, so that, again, we can find common ground and work together. The divisiveness that I see from my opponent, from others, … it is not just who we could be as Americans. DM: There is an ever-growing immigrant population in Kansas. What steps should be taken towards immigration reform? BB: This is a place where Washington is broken. And it hasn’t been just during this administration. We have needed to reform our immigration system for years, probably since the ’70s. So what can we do? Let’s start with a path to citizenship that is consistent with the 21st century and who we are as a nation. We need people to be coming to this country who want and are ready to work and grow this economy, which we know that’s what most immigrants do. They build opportunity and they grow our businesses. I have long been a supporter of “Dreamers.” They were brought here under no choice of their own and we need reform so that they have a path to citizenship here. We have educated them; they are a part of our community and we need to help them finish that out. Of course, we want safe borders, but you and I know that America has been a beacon of hope for so many people of this world, and we need to continue to be that, and help people find that opportunity that all of us want in this country and do that responsibly. DM: Why should Kansans vote for you? BB: They need to vote for me because I’m the best candidate. Because I listen, I follow the facts and the science. I am about bringing people to work together, rather than divisiveness, and I tell the truth. I’m an independent voice of reason and that’s what we need in Washington: People who would put person above party. *This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity.

Thousands of K-12 students didn’t return to school after spring break, converting instead to remote learning. There were no spring proms, and the only graduation ceremonies, most of which were delayed, were virtual or held outside with limited attendance. Public swimming pools and summer camps were cancelled. Major League Baseball played a shortened season without fans in the stands. Businesses and nonprofits are struggling financially. So are local governments.

The unemployment rate in October 2019 reached 3.5 percent, the lowest level in 50 years. The pandemic has sent it spiraling to 7.9 percent in September 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Record-breaking wildfires in the West have incinerated over seven million acres, and they’re still blazing. The Atlantic hurricane season is just three storms shy of breaking the record for the most active hurricane season ever. And on Monday, Hurricane Zeta formed in Mexico and is headed for America’s Gulf coast. Last month, Goodland, Kan., and eight other locations had their earliest ever snowfall. Goodland picked up a half-inch of snow on Sept. 9, meteorologists reported. Next Tuesday (Nov. 3), Americans will elect a president to steer this troubled ship of state for the next four years, along with other federal officeholders and state and local officials. We’ve already seen historic levels of voter turnout. As of Monday, NPR reported, Americans had already cast a whopping 62 million early ballots. Early voting in Kansas opened on Oct. 14. Missouri doesn’t offer early voting, but voters could request by Oct. 21 an absentee or mail-in ballot which must be returned by 7 pm on Nov. 3 and in most cases must be notarized. The countdown is on to Election Day. Four days remain as of today for voters to educate ourselves about the election. In this digital age, it’s never been easier. The nonpartisan League of Women Voters has put together and posted easily accessed, comprehensive voter information online for every state. For Kansans, the Web address is https://www.vote411. org/kansas; for Missourians, https://www. vote411.org/missouri. A well-informed electorate is essential to our democracy, scholars, political scientists and democratic theorists posit. When we’re not clear about whom and what we’re voting for, we aren’t left with much incentive to vote. But then, how much is an uninformed ballot worth anyway?

Felipe Calderón —de 2006 a 2012— fue detenido en Texas. Durante esos años, García Luna fue una pieza fundamental en la llamada “guerra contra el narco”, que disparó el aumento de violencia en el país. Un juez lo acusó de recibir millones de dólares en sobornos del Cártel de Sinaloa. La gran tragedia mexicana es que dos de los principales funcionarios encargados de luchar contra el narcotráfico y la violencia consiguiente durante 12 años podrían haber estado del lado equivocado. Y si Cienfuegos y García Luna resultan culpables es imposible no preguntarse: ¿cuántos funcionarios más habrá actualmente en puestos de autoridad que estén vinculados a grupos criminales? Esta es nuestra triste realidad. Ante lo cual hay sólo dos posibilidades: te quejas y culpas a Cienfuegos y a García Luna por todos los males de México o haces algo al respecto. Desafortunadamente AMLO ha decidido usarlos como una excusa para justificar su falta de resultados en la lucha contra la violencia. Vamos a hacer memoria. Esto es lo que dijo López Obrador el 22 de agosto de 2019: “No quiero seguir responsabilizando a la administración pasada

y a los de antes de esa administración. [...] Ya es nuestra responsabilidad”. “Hay grandes, graves problemas nacionales y los tenemos que enfrentar”, aseguró. Pero ahora, en sus conferencias de prensa matutinas —las Mañaneras—, sigue culpando, precisamente, a gobiernos anteriores por sus errores y por su falta de efectividad. Sin duda, las encuestas indican que López Obrador sigue siendo un presidente muy popular. Pero me llama mucho la atención el modo en el que los seguidores de López Obrador no le suelen exigen resultados, como si las 63.792 muertes por la violencia desde que inició su gobierno y las casi 90.000 fatalidades de la pandemia no importaran. Al final, si algo he aprendido de cubrir a todo tipo de presidentes durante más de tres décadas, es que los muertos no se pueden ocultar. Los muertos no se van, nos persiguen y siempre acaban por debilitar y asustar a los líderes que pretenden esconderlos. En enero de este año fui a una mañanera de López Obrador en Ciudad de México y, después de revisar las terribles cifras de asesinatos durante su gobierno, le pregunté: “¿Cuándo va a haber resultados?”. Y su respuesta fue: “Este año”. Ya veremos.

¿Cuál es el plan? Desde que Andrés Manuel López Obrador llegó a la presidencia han asesinado a 63.792 personas en México. No hay otros datos. Esas son las cifras oficiales del gobierno mexicano de homicidios dolosos del primero de diciembre de 2018 al 30 de septiembre de 2020. Conclusión: el gobierno de AMLO no ha podido con la violencia. Alfonso Durazo, secretario de Seguridad Pública —el encargado del gobierno de reducir la violencia— tampoco pudo. Hace unos días, reconoció que “no podíamos fingir que sería fácil enfrentar o resolver el problema”. Y al final ni fingió ni lo resolvió: anunció su renuncia al cargo y reveló que contenderá por la gubernatura de Sonora. Deja vacante uno de los puestos más importantes del gabinete de López Obrador y, ahora, quien lo reemplace tampoco podrá resolver el problema. Se requiere algo antes. Para enfrentar el enorme desafío de la violencia, se necesita un plan realista y efectivo. Es urgente hacerlo. Y pronto. Este 2020 puede convertirse en el año más violento en la historia moderna de México, incluso con más personas asesinadas que las 34.669 de 2019. Hay que ser sinceros: lo que ha hecho AMLO hasta el momento no ha funcionado. Sus cifras anuales de muertos superan a las de los gobiernos de sus antecesores —Enrique Peña Nieto, Felipe Calderón, Vicente Fox, Ernesto Zedillo y Carlos Salinas de Gortari—, según cifras oficiales de

su gobierno y confirmado por otros reportes e informes. Militarizar la seguridad nacional, como ha sucedido desde los últimos sexenios y se ha profundizado con López Obrador, no ha dado los resultados esperados. La violencia los ha desbordado. Este mes se oficializó que la recién creada Guardia Nacional quedará bajo el control operativo de la Secretaría de Defensa. También se le ha otorgado al ejército el control de puertos, aduanas y del nuevo aeropuerto. En una democracia, ese es el trabajo de los civiles. El lugar de los soldados no es en las calles sino en los cuarteles. Y tras el arresto del general Salvador Cienfuegos, exsecretario de Defensa durante la presidencia de Peña Nieto —de 2012 a 2018—, surgen nuevas dudas sobre la fallida estrategia nacional contra la violencia. Cienfuegos —arrestado en Los Ángeles, no en México— está acusado de facilitarle el trabajo a un cártel para el tráfico de drogas a cambio de sobornos. Un juez le negó la fianza ante el peligro de que se fugue. Es la primera vez que un secretario de Defensa de México es señalado por narcotráfico y, de confirmarse los cargos, hablaría de gravísimos problemas dentro del ejército mexicano. Si las acusaciones se confirman, Cienfuegos no pudo actuar solo y habría que investigar si posibles cómplices siguen dentro de la institución castrense. He was appointed to the Kansas Human Rights Commission by Governors Kathleen Sebelius and Sam Brownback for 8 years. He was appointed to the Wyandotte County Ethics Commission He was a member of Hispanic Media Association Scholarship Fund 15 years. He served as Commissioner of the Kansas City, Kansas Housing authority 8 years, Board member of El Centro 4 years, the 2nd Vice President for El Centro 4 years, Board Member of Bishop Ward High School 6 years, and Committee Member for the Board of Public Utilities United Way Campaign. He served on the Parish Council, Altar Society and Knights of Columbus for St. John the Evangelist/Divine. Tony is survived by his siblings Katherine Villegas, Rose Martinez, Teresa Pedroza and Ralph Villegas plus many nieces and nephews whom he fondly referred to each one present with him as his “favorite”. Tony will be missed by all as he was a bright light when he walked into any room!

I was born and raised here in the suburbs here in Missouri, and I have lived in the city for quite a few years now. And the reason that I decided to run is I have worked on a couple of political campaigns volunteering in the past, and more than anything, I feel like our country is in the middle of a spiritual war. … And Mr. Cleaver, I don’t think he can’t relate to what’s going on in our country. … It’s time for our generation to step up.

It was just this year in Virginia where they passed an abortion law where you can have a child and still have an abortion and I’m completely against that. These are some of the solutions – smaller government and protecting the family. DM: Of the many issues facing the U.S., which three are your priorities? RD: In no particular order: *The education of our future generation. The Department of Education needs to be ended. It was created in 1980. It needs to be ended, and we need to let the cities and the states across the country experiment and educate how they want to. Let the schools compete for children and teachers, instead of children and teachers competing for a school. *Agriculture. The Department of Agriculture needs to go away. Right now, most people don’t realize this, but China and Brazil own nearly the entire meat and farming industry, but the national security risk people have no clue that over half of our entire agriculture industry is owned by China and Brazil. *The third issue I’d like to tackle and work on, which is a responsibility of the House of Representatives, is spending. Spending and our budget are out of control. We need a balanced budget and we need to stop spending in our country. We’re spending money on war overseas, on foreign aid, on all sorts of dumb stuff; but we have people who are homeless, we have roads falling apart, we have trash everywhere. We need to get our spending under control and let the American citizens keep more of their money, instead of taxing them so much.

DM: Why should people vote for you? RD: I think what I hear most often is that people like us aren’t supposed to be up in Washington, D.C.; that I’m a normal individual; that I’ve been the most transparent and acceptable candidate that people have ever seen. I’m constantly live-streaming everything I do on the internet. I’m constantly talking to people and commenting and interacting with them online. Q&A: Con el representante Emanuel Cleaver II

Republican Ryan Derks and Libertarian Robin Dominick in the Nov. 3 general elections. Ahead of that, Dos Mundos spoke with Cleaver by phone about his work as a representative and what he wants to do if re-elected.

Dos Mundos: ¿Qué le hizo postularse para el Congreso la primera vez y qué sigue impulsando a postularse? Emanuel Cleaver: I ran for the Kansas City Council and was fortunate to have won that seat and served for three terms. Then, I ran for Congress with the urging of Nancy Pelosi and others. I feel good about some of the things we’ve been able to accomplish and a few things on my agenda and I would really like to finish some of the things that we’ve been able to get done. DM: What are some of these issues that still need to get done? EC: One of the things is, we have to get this stimulus approved again because we have Black and Brown businesses that are struggling, trying to just continue to keep their doors open. We passed in the House the HEROES Act that … stalled in the U.S. Senate, but we’re going to try and get it approved after the Nov. 3 election. I’d been in the middle of that, so hopefully, I

would like to continue to get it done. And then, the other thing that I think that … (is) hanging out there is that we gotta have a national plan for halting this coronavirus. Because I grew up in public housing, that means a lot to me. We (also) have no immigration plan that’s worth it. I’ve been down to the border on three occasions to try to get a good picture. Our country now looks criminal in some of the things we’ve done. … We have a lot of work to do, and I’ve been at the center of a lot of it and I’d like to finish out the work that we’ve already begun. valga la pena. DM: Why should people vote for you? EC: I think one of the things is, I’m probably one of the most respected individuals on both sides of the aisle. I work with Republicans. In fact, Republicans just did a fundraiser for me last week in Kansas City. We might disagree on some things, but they know that I am probably the leading voice for turning down the volume as we function in Washington. I think we have a lot of hostility in the country, and a lot of it is because of what they see taking place in Washington. I think we’re poisoning the whole country with all the hostility and rancor that comes out of Washington. I think it’s tragic, and I don’t participate in it. I don’t call people names. I don’t do a lot of the things that I think contribute to this atmosphere in the country right now. … My whole commitment has been that there’s no such thing as partial bigotry. In other words, if somebody says, “I don’t have a problem with African Americans, but we have to do something about immigrants down at the border,” for me, they just attacked me as well because you can’t be partially bigoted. Either you are a bigot or you’re not. I think that, if you start talking with leaders in the community, ask them who has been there. … My history speaks for itself, my voting record speaks for itself, my relationships speak for themselves.

El día que fui diagnosticada con cáncer de mama, descubrí lo dificultoso que es pronunciar esta palabra. Me di cuenta porque cada vez que tenía que contarle a alguien las noticias de mi enfermedad, no podía decir: “tengo cáncer”. Recuerdo que cuando tuve que hablar con mi padre sobre mi situación, pensé mil veces en cual sería la mejor manera de darle la noticia sin sonar “lúgubre”. Además de tener terror a usar esta palabra “prohibida”, también me entristecía que mi padre pensara que yo iba a pasar por lo mismo que mi madre, quien murió de cáncer de mama a los 33 años. Así que sutilmente y fingiendo que mi noticia no era algo tan importante, le dije: “Papá, por favor no quiero que te preocupes, sólo quiero dejarte saber que me hicieron una biopsia del seno izquierdo y los resultados son positivos”. Rápidamente preguntó preocupado “¿explícame bien que significa eso?” y sin más remedio tuve que usar un derivado de palabra que tanto miedo me daba pronunciar. “Papá, esto significa que me encontraron células cancerosas”.

textos que recibí en mi celular, todos expresaban mensajes solidarios como: “Déjale este problema a Dios”, “Me enteré que estás pasando por una situación difícil”, “Siento mucho lo que te está sucediendo”, “Sé que vas a superar esta prueba”. Sin embargo, en ninguno de los mensajes aparece la palabra cáncer. ¿Por qué se nos hace tan difícil decir esta palabra? Porque pensamos que es sinónimo de muerte. Creemos que si le decimos a una amiga “Me enteré que te diagnosticaron con cáncer de mama” es lo mismo que decirle “Me enteré que te vas a morir”. Es cierto que muchos mueren de cáncer, pero también es cierto que muchos lo superan. Es hora de que cambiemos el significado tan fúnebre que le hemos asignado a este padecimiento. Esto ayudaría, mental y emocionalmente, a los pacientes de cáncer a pelear con este mal. Si al igual que yo has sido diagnosticado con esta enfermedad, convéncete de que el cáncer no es una sentencia de muerte, más bien es una prueba que te hará más fuerte.

ansas City Public Theatre está estenando su primer drama radiofónico en español. “El Amor que Mueve el Sol y las demás Estrellas” cuenta la historia de ficción de dos mujeres de la vida real, Leonora Carrington y Remedios Varo. La escritora Karen Lisondra dijo que había estado interesada en ellas por un tiempo y en 2018 finalmente comenzó a escribir algo inspirado en sus vidas. “Estoy usando música y diseño de sonido para explorar las mentes de estos dos artistas (Carrington y Varo)”, dijo. ansas City Public Theatre is premiering its first Spanish-language radio drama. K “El Amor que Mueve el Sol y las demas

Estrellas” tells the fictionalized story of two real-life women, Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo. Writer Karen Lisondra said she had been interested in them for a while and in 2018 finally started writing something inspired by their lives. “I’m using music and sound design to get to explore the minds of these two artists (Carrington and Varo),” she said. The play touches on themes such as resilience and the empowerment of women, Lisondra said. The play was supposed to premiere as a stage play at the Kansas City Fringe Festival. But because of the pandemic, Lisondra — who also directed it — decided to change it from English to Spanish and make it into a radio play. “It’s been really exciting because we got to explore the whole realm of sound through these four composers. … It’s really interesting and cool,” she said. Lisondra’s husband, Amado Espinoza, was in charge of music and sound design. It stars Julia Othmer and Fedra Cooper, and features many other local artists. “It’s been really great because we’ve been able to reach out and get a lot of people to work on it, like Jose Faus and Eugenia Gonzalez,” she said. Now that it’s going into a digital format, Lisondra hopes to spread the work beyond Kansas City and the United States. “Because of the nature of the show being digital, it’s something that can be spread all over, not just here in Kansas City,” she said. “You can share it with the whole Spanish-speaking population around the world.” “El Amor que Mueve el Sol y las demas Estrellas” will premiere at 7 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 29) on KKFI-FM (90.1).
