He graduated high school in 1976 and went on active duty. “I graduated May 25, and on May 26, I went on active duty,” Alvarado said. “I remember I left that very next morning. When everybody was going to graduation parties and all of that, I went home right after graduation and … I left the next morning (at) like 4 in the morning.” Alvarado’s father also was a Navy veteran, having served during World War II. His older brother was a Marine and had served in Vietnam. From a young age, he knew the military was the path for him, too. “In our family, it’s more like a

Almost three months ago, Ramon lost 30 pounds in a month. Orona noticed he drank a 24-pack of water within two days. He also was having trouble sleeping. She took her son to his doctor. “At first, I thought he had worms because he got so skinny,” she recalled. “I took him to his doctor and they drew blood. The next day, they called me and told me it was really serious and if he doesn’t get to a hospital right now, he’ll end up in the hospital for a long time. His pancreas gave out.” Ramon was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. His life and Orona’s life changed. Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no

If he doesn’t have it, he won’t survive,” Orona said. “He has to check his blood, and it’s really overwhelming because if he doesn’t have his strip to check his blood, it can be either too high or too low.” Something her son struggled with at first was that he could no longer eat whatever he wanted. That was “the main thing that took him off guard,” Orona said. “It does suck because he has to count his carbs,” she said. To do that, her son needs to poke himself before eating and make sure his blood sugar levels remain at a normal rate. Within a month, Ramon already knew how to do those things on his own, Orona recalled. “I’m really proud of him because I told him that he has diabetes for the rest of his life, so eventually, he’d have to poke himself and do everything that I was doing on his own, and I didn’t expect for him to do it on his own so quickly,” she said. The boy not only knows how to check his blood, but also how to give himself his insulin. Because of how common this type of diabetes seems to be, Orona is surprised by how expensive it is. They had run out of the test strips used to test blood sugar levels twice because insurance only covers 200 of them, but Ramon goes through between 400 and 500 strips a month. He uses about seven strips a day. Orona did not know about type 1 diabetes before his son’s diagnosis. She wants other people to be aware of it. “I think what I would want people to be aware of about is that there’s more than one type of diabetes and I think people should know the difference,” Orona said. In honor of Veterans Day, the Kansas City Public Library partnered with the Missouri Humanities Council and the Kansas City Veterans Writing Team to offer workshops on three consecutive Saturdays. Interested veterans are strongly encouraged to attend all three -Writing to See, 10 am-12 pm, Nov. 7; Writing to Connect, 10 am-12 pm, Nov. 14; and Writing to Hear, 10 am-12 pm, Nov. 21. The sessions are taught by professional writers and educators who provide college-level writing course instruction. Sessions are open to veterans, activity duty military and veterans’ family members. The Veterans Reader Theater features a live performance of prose and poetry by members of the Kansas City Veterans Writing Team, a program of the Moral Injury Association of America. The readings will be followed by a veterans Q&A. The virtual event is open to the general public, and there’s no admission fee, but attendees must register online to receive the link. The Kansas City Veterans Writing Team offers workshops, monthly veteran critique groups and other literary events. Many workshop graduates meet monthly to hone their writing skills and share their stories in a safe environment. The writing critique group offers the “camaraderie of military life.” The nonprofit Moral Injury Association of America was founded in Kansas City in 2016 to help military personnel nationwide and their families “recover from moral and psychological trauma suffered in service to our nation.” These writing offerings aren’t the only area programs and services dedicated to helping military veterans. The Veterans Community Project, the Salvation Army’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families, the KCATA’s free service for veterans, Catholic Charities’ multifaceted veterans services, and the many local grocers, eateries and businesses that offer Veterans Day freebies and discounts are just a few examples. They’re reminders that Veterans Day isn’t appropriately an event; caring for our veterans is part of life. Observing the day is about more than thanking the veterans we encounter, holding parades, organizing commemorative events … it’s about demonstrating to our veterans that their sacrifice and service is appreciated while institutionalizing all that’s necessary to provide what they need to make their lives as good as they deserve.

ara muchos latinos, los demócratas son muy buenos para prometer. Ahora tienen que demostrar que también son buenos para cumplir. Si el exvicepresidente Joe Biden quiere obtener más votos latinos que Hillary Clinton en las elecciones de 2016 —y con ellos vencer a Donald Trump y llegar a la Casa Blanca— debe convencer a millones de votantes de que no va a cometer los mismos errores que el expresidente Barack Obama.

Y ya le queda muy poco tiempo para hacerlo. Más de tres millones de inmigrantes fueron deportados durante la presidencia de Obama, muchos de quienes no tenían antecedentes criminales. Por eso Janet Murguía de UnidosUS le llamó el “deportador en jefe”. Si gana, Biden no debe seguir con la misma política de deportaciones masivas. Tampoco puede mantener el mismo sistema carcelario que durante años ha puesto temporalmente a inmigrantes y a sus niños en jaulas. En una entrevista en febrero de este año en Las Vegas le mostré al exvicepresidente una fotografía tomada por John Moore en la que aparece un niño hondureño en lo que parecía ser una enorme jaula metálica en un centro de detención en McAllen, Texas. La imagen no se tomó durante el gobierno de Trump, sino en 2014, mientras Obama gobernaba. Esa práctica inhumana también tendría que acabar. Pero, desde luego, la gran promesa incumplida de los demócratas es una reforma migratoria que

legalice a los casi 11 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados que hay en Estados Unidos. La promesa original la hizo Barack Obama cuando era candidato a la presidencia en 2008. Los latinos no han olvidado la promesa de Obama. Por eso el Partido Demócrata tiene un “Latino problem”. Ahora le toca a Joe Biden y a la senadora Kamala Harris corregir esa falta de credibilidad de los demócratas con la comunidad latina. “Creo que fue un gran error”, reconoció Biden, en esa entrevista, sobre las deportaciones masivas durante el gobierno de Obama. “Nos tardamos mucho en hacer lo correcto”. Por “hacer lo correcto” se refiere al programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA, por su sigla en inglés) creado por el gobierno de Obama en 2012. El programa protege de la deportación y les da la posibilidad de trabajar a unos 700.000 jóvenes inmigrantes —llamados dreamers—, aunque el gobierno de Trump hizo esfuerzos para eliminarlo.

obert Louis Tinoco, affectionately known as “Bobby T,” R passed away on October 26th, 2020. He was our beloved father, son, sibling, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend.

Bobby was born the youngest of seven siblings on November 5, 1965 in Kansas City, Missouri, to Albert “Tic Toc” and Angelina “Halo” Tinoco. A life-long resident of the Westside, Bobby loved his community and considered everybody as part of the Tinoco family. He attended Our Lady of the Americas and graduated from Harmon High School in 1984. Bobby started his own small business of detailing cars and carpet cleaning. He loved taking his daughter on jobs with him, introducing her to his customers and teaching her new things about the business. Robert believed the smallest details in everything he did, counted the most, but it came easy to him because he did everything with love. He was always quick to offer help to anyone who needed it, and let everyone know how much he loved and cared for them. He would say, “don’t hide it, divide it!”. Bobby always greeted everyone he saw with a big smile and warm hug; he believed those small things could turn someone’s day around. He always had a big smile on his face and if you heard a room laughing, it was probably because of something he said. Bobby was treated like a celebrity everywhere he went, because everyone would always come to say hello to him, wave and honk at him if they drove by, or could be heard yelling, “Bobby T!” from afar. He was a huge Mizzou fan and loved his Kansas City teams, but he especially loved watching his beloved Kansas City Chiefs. He will be greatly missed; along with his infectious smile and how he could always make everyone laugh. We will miss all of his unique sayings, but especially his, “I love America!...and twice on Sunday!” He would also say, “mmmmhmmm”. Bobby is preceded in death by his parents, Albert & Angelina; his siblings, Albert Jr (Cynthia), Michael, & Gloria. He is survived by his children, Robert Tinoco Jr, Francisco Casas-Tinoco, Antonia Tinoco, and Lily Arellano; siblings, Daniel (Lucy), Rose, David

(Sonia), Tina, & Gilbert (Miceala); and many nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. A public visitation will be held on Friday, November 6th at Sacred Heart-Guadalupe Church from 9:30 am – 11:00 am with a private memorial mass (for immediate family) at 11:00 am. Services will be streamed live via McGilley Memorial ChapelMidtown’s Facebook page. Interment to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, KS. Individuals attending the visitation and mass will be required to follow the safety guidelines: masks will be required, social distancing will be enforced, and individuals will be required to sanitize their hands upon entry and exit of church. Silva hopes this division also will advise in terms of policy changes at the legislative level. “Even though women have a better foothold now than ever before, there’s still some disparities and imbalances (at the legislative level), whether it’s equal pay in the workplace or anti-discrimination language,” he said. Kansas and Missouri ultimately turned out as predicted. In Kansas, Republican Rep. Roger Marshall won his bid for the U.S. Senate, defeating Democrat Barbara Bollier 53.8% to 41.3%. In the weeks leading up to the election, the race was expected to be tighter than it ended up being. Kansas has not elected a Democratic senator since 1928. At the U.S. House level, U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids was re-elected to represent Kansas’ 3rd Congressional District, defeating Republican Amanda Adkins and Libertarian Steven Hohe. Across the state line, voters in Missouri chose Republican Mike Parson as governor over Democrat Nicole Galloway. Parson, who assumed the governorship upon Eric Greitens’ resignation amid political scandals, obtained 57.2% of the votes against Galloway’s 40.6%. Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe was elected for another term, as were Attorney General Eric Schmitt, Secretary of State John Ashcroft and State Treasurer Scott Fitzpatrick. At the federal level, Missouri’s 5th District re-elected Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II, defeating Republican challenger Ryan Derks 58.6% to 38.8%. Libertarian Robin Dominick secured 2.6% of the vote.

Es considerada como una de las ciudades más bellas de Europa por lo cuál cuenta con una gran cantidad de lugares denominados Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Además cuenta con el mayor sistema de cuevas de aguas termales en el mundo, la segunda mayor sinagoga del mundo y el tercer edificio del Parlamento más grande del mundo. Los vuelos redondos de Kansas a Budapest tienen un costo promedio de $1,000 y la gran mayoría cuentan con al menos 2 escalas. Es además el edificio más grande de todo el país y fue construido entre 1884 y 1902, por el arquitecto Imre Steindl, la única forma de acceder al edificio es a través de una visita guiada por lo que es importante contratar ya sea el guía gratuito a uno personalizado de paga. *Monumento “Zapatos en la Orilla del Danubio”: un homenaje a todos los judíos asesinados en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Este hermoso lugar parece un castillo y por mucho es el lugar ideal para ver desde lo alto la ciudad, aquí podrás admirar como de ningún otro lado el hermoso Parlamento Húngaro. El idioma que se utiliza es el Húngaro aunque muchos de los habitantes dominan de manera básica el inglés, su moneda oficial es el Forinto Húngaro o también conocido como Florín Húngaro, por suerte la mayoría de establecimientos cuenta con terminales para tarjetas de débito o crédito por lo que no vas a requerir cambiar mucho efectivo a la moneda local. Recuerda que si vas a viajar tomar las extremas precauciones que así lo requiera tu ciudad y los destinos a los que vas a visitar, sin más por el momento me despido, no sin antes desearles tengan mucha salud, una excelente aventura y un buen viaje.

The language spoken is Hungarian although many people have a basic command of English. Its official currency is the Hungarian Forint; luckily most establishments have terminals for debit or credit cards for what you are not going to require changing a lot of cash to the local currency. Remember that if you are going to travel, take the extreme precautions required by your city and the destinations you are going to visit. Platt, the city manager for Jersey City, New Jersey, should start serving as city manager for Kansas City “no later than Jan. 4, 2021.” Platt said he found there were similar challenges in Kansas City that he had experienced and overcome during his time in Jersey City. He is excited to start working here. “It’s exciting for me to roll up my sleeves and start working with the City Council here, the mayor and the people of the city,” Platt said. “I’m really looking forward to meeting as many people as I can and working with them collaboratively.” One issue Platt will work on will be the road preservation program, which includes filling potholes. During the call, Lucas also spoke about his crime prevention plan. “We’re working to make sure that there are opportunities for our young people, that there are alternatives for those who found themselves in trouble before,” he said. Earlier on Oct. 30, he had walked through neighborhoods in the Historic Northeast area to hear from residents about what long-term approaches they considered important for addressing violent crime, Lucas said.
