Community Round-up: Domestic Harmony Committee ICLI Sunday School

Asalamu Alaikum. We wish you a very blessed Eid ul Adha (Eid of sacrifice) and pray that Allah (SWT) will accept and bless the Hajjis (pilgrims) as they fulfill this most religious obligation – joining together with millions of other Muslims to worship Allah (God), the One Almighty, Creator and Sustainer of us all.

SOME REFLECTIONS ON TSUNAMI We have all witnessed the recent tragic events resulting from the tsunami. We pray for those who have perished in the South Asian tsunami, and for the many people who are suffering around the world. The visual images from tsunami reminded me of:

Siraj Wahaj, Feisal Abdul Rauf, and Dr. Jamal Badawi provided a spiritual uplift for all attendees. There were some excellent workshops and town-hall meetings led by Srs Debbie Almontasar and Aisha Al-Adawiya addressing issues of great concern to the AmericanMuslim community; example, conflict resolution, coping with eroding civil rights, providing appropriate space for Muslim women in mosques, governance and management of mosques and Islamic centers, etc. From ISNA headquarters we had Sayyid Mohammed Syeed, Ahmed El-Hattab and Mohammed El-Sanousi participate.

ISLAMIC CENTER LONG ISLAND Dr. Jerald Dirks

Imam Siraj Wahaj answered questions in a lively townhall style meeting for close to three hours. Imam Feisal Rauf gave a review of how Muslims are expected to cope with stress and crisis, and Dr. Badawi gave us a road map for following the Sunnah of the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh), and addressed issues involved in family structure – role of spouses, children, and parents. On the final day we had an informative session on youth, moderated and managed by ICLI youth. Dr. Jerald Dirks and his wife Debra Dirks provided us with an insight into the commonalities of monotheistic faiths, and the special challenges and opportunities which American-Muslims face. We learned that of the approximately seven million American Muslims, 80 percent were born and brought up in the USA. A very special and unique matrimonial get-together was also arranged during this meeting under the superb leadership of Srs Homaira Mamoor and Dr Samia Chaudhry. It was very well received and based on the input of attendees, I am confident we will have such events on a regular basis, in the future. For those who would like to receive further details, kindly e-mail: iclimatrimonial@Yahoo.com. A FEW FINAL THOUGHTS Staff Changes: We have now hired additional office

Community Round-up Domestic Harmony Committee A word from the New Chairperson of DHC: Asalaam alaikum. I am honored to have been asked to chair the Domestic Harmony Committee of ICLI. This entails trying to fill the extremely large shoes of Sr. Shaida Khan and all members of DHC who for the last many years have dedicated themselves to alleviating suffering in women and children trapped in abusive relationships. I am humbled by the compassion these ladies have for the cause and have learned the value of selflessness from them. I will endeavor to help the DHC to fulfill its various goals, and hopefully my expertise as a psychiatrist will be of value. The DHC is looking for volunteers to help in various areas of need. Any one interested in volunteering is invited to attend our meeting on Feb. 24th , 2005 at 6 pm sharp, at 5 Jamie Drive. We will discuss details at the meeting and look forward to seeing you there. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy and healthy new year and may Allah bless us all. Asma A. Ejaz, MD

ICLI Joins Leading Organizations A full page advertisement in The New York Times was published on January 14th, 2005. It was signed by many Muslim, Jewish and Christian Leaders. THE TENT OF ABRAHAM, HAGAR, & SARAH: A CALL FOR PEACEMAKING We are members of the families of Abraham "Muslims, Christians, Jews”. Our traditions teach us to have compassion, seek justice, and pursue peace for all peoples. We bear especially deep concern for the region where Abraham grew and learned, taught and flourished. Today that region stretches from Iraq, where Abraham grew up, to Israel and Palestine, where he sojourned, and to Mecca and Egypt, where he visited. Today our hearts are broken by the violence poured out upon the peoples of that broad region. That violence has included terrorist attacks on and kidnappings of Americans, Israelis, Iraqis, Europeans, and others by various Palestinian and Iraqi groups and by Al Qaeda; the occupation of Palestinian lands by Israel and of Iraq by the United States; and the torture of prisoners by several different police forces, military forces, and governments in the region. From our heartbreak at these destructive actions, we intend to open our hearts more fully to each other and to the suffering of all peoples. In the name of the One God Whom we all serve and celebrate, we condemn all these forms of violence. To end the present wars and to take serious steps toward the peace that all our traditions demand of us, we call on governments and on the leaders of all religious and cultural communities to act. We urge the US government to set a firm and speedy date for completing the safe return home from Iraq of all American soldiers and civilians under military contract. We urge the UN to work directly with Iraqi political groupings to transfer power in Iraq to an elected government. We urge the UN, the US, the European Union, and Russia to convene a comprehensive peace conference through which the governments of Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Iran, and all Arab states conclude a full diplomatic, economic, and cultural peace with Israel and Palestine, defined approximately on the 1967 boundaries, with small mutual adjustments. We urge the international community to work out lawful and effective means to deal with the dangers of international terrorism, the spread of nuclear and similar weapons, and conflicts over the control of oil and water. We ourselves will act to create transnational and interfaith networks of Jews, Christians, and Muslims who will covenant together - to insist that governments take these steps, - to undertake whatever nonviolent actions are necessary to prevent more violence and achieve a just peace throughout the region, - and to grow grass-roots relationships that bind together those who have been enemies into a Compassionate Coalition. According to tradition, Abraham, Hagar, and Sarah kept their tent open in all four directions, the more easily to share their food and water with travelers from anywhere. In that spirit, we welcome all those who thirst and hunger for justice, peace, and dignity, to join in affirming this statement. Sister Joan Chittister, OSB; Rev. Bob Edgar, National Council of Churches; Dr. Sayyid Muhammad Syeed, Islamic Society of North America; Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf, Imam Talib Abdur Rashid, Dr Faroque Ahmad Khan, Imam Mahdi Bray, Saadi Shakur/Neil Douglas-Klotz; Rabbis Elliot Dorff, Gerry Serotta, David Teutsch, Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, Arthur Waskow, and Sheila Weinberg;
