Sunday School Graduation Day And Bridges TV launch Brings The Community Together

To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He creates what He wills (and plans). He bestows (children) male or female according to His Will (and Plan).(42:49)

Alhamdu-Lillah, on Sunday May 22nd ICLI Sunday school children had their graduation ceremony. It was a wonderful day complimented with the national launch of Bridges TV on DISH NETWORK. Many dignitary's and media were present. Below is a report of the day’s happenings from sis. Tahira Muhammad.

“I believe that children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way” Show them all the beauty they possess inside.”

Everyone who grew up in the era of the 1980’s in America is well familiar with the song “Greatest Love of All” sung by Whitney Houston. Alhamdu-Lillah, the Sunday School Children really exhibited their beauty and pride at the graduation ceremony. The presentations were only a small display of the talent and intelligence that these children are fully capable of. Classes A-F made their mark when they performed the skits on Islamic Etiquette, Allah’s creation, their recitation of the Quran. Truly everyone’s hard work paid off as we witnessed the children

blossomed like “the fruits of labor” in Sunday’s ceremony. Rewards such as prayer rugs and other items were only a small token in the greater reward from Allah, which are these precious children whom we can look up to as our future Muslim leaders in America one day, Inshallah.

can combat these stereotypes with people who represent Muslims of all walks of life. Bridges TV presented Dr. Faroque Khan with a Lifetime Achievement award, which he accepted on behalf of ICLI.

After the ceremony and the Zuhr prayer, everyone gathered outside to eat and enjoy the fun activities. There was face painting, a popcorn and ice cream machine, a bouncer and slide machine. Everyone who worked hard to see the children were able to breath a sigh of relief and eat and enjoy themselves for the hard work they did throughout the year. The day started off as a rainy day, but Allah blessed us and held off the rain for the duration of the ceremony. The graduation ceremony encouraged more overall participation. At the same time Sister Hoda and Sis Shireen were able to introduce the Preschool which Inshallah will open in late June. ICLI is now in full circle with introducing children to the Masjid. With the Mommy and Me Daycare , Sunday School, Quran Classes and now the Preschool, this covers children from 3 months to 16 years in introducing them to the center and encouraging their continuous participation.

“Everybody's searching for a hero. People need someone to look up to. I never found anyone who fulfilled my need.”

Alhamdu-Lillah Rabil Alameen! Once again ICLI made history, with the launching of Bridges TV in conjunction with the Sunday School Graduation. Bye bye Superman! Now children can have Muslim Heroes and heroines to look up to on a Muslim network!!!! Bridges TV CEO (Muzammil Hassan) spoke and showed a clip on some of the programming that Bridges TV will offer. Now children can watch cartoons that represent them and not violent characters like Bugs Bunny, Tom & Jerry etc. He expressed the importance of young people seeing themselves represented on TV. This will empower them to have pride and become the leaders of this country. With all the negative stereotypes of Muslims in the media, now Bridges TV

“I decided long ago never to walk in anyone's shadow. If I fail, if I succeed at least I'll live as I believe. No matter what they take from me, they can't take away my dignity. Because the greatest love of all is happening to me. Because the greatest love of all is happening to me. I found the greatest love of all inside of me. The greatest love of all is easy to achieve.”

So now that you witnessed the graduation we hope that this will encourage you to enroll your children in one of our Youth programs. The graduation is the end product of what your child can become when they attend one of the above mentioned programs that we offer here at the Masjid. Do not let your children feel like they have to “walk in the shadow” of others. Let them feel the love they have inside of themselves and by having them participate in one of these programs, you will then see how easy the love of Islam inside of them will be easy to achieve. Our children are second generation American Muslim children and the more we empower them, Inshallah the more we empower ourselves and the future of this country. Ameen.

Annual Speech Competition

In April, after several years of non-participation, ICLI Sunday School students (Tariq Soleman, Tauseef Ahmad, Rimsha Ahmad, Hana Baig and Sara Mahmood) attended the Annual Speech Competition at the Muslim Center of New York in Flushing. Despite the fierce competition, Hana Baig came third in her category with the following speech:

Follow Al Quran in order to get Mercy of Allah (swt)

Rabbish rahli Sadre. Wa Yassirle Amre. Wahdul Uqdatam Millithani. Yaf qahu Qowli.

Respected Judges, Brothers, and Sisters in Islam, Asalaamu Alaikum. My name is Hana Baig. The topic of my speech is: Follow Al-Quran in order to have Mercy of Allah (swt).

We all know that Quran is the sacred book of the Muslims and the main source of law in Islam. The Quran is the complete book of Guidance for mankind. The entire Quran is from Allah (swt). Each word of it is a revealed word. Allah (swt) says in the Quran, Surah Yunus Ayah 37:

“And this Quran is not such as could ever be produced by other than Allah, in fact, it is the confirmation of prior revelations and a full explanation of the book; there is no doubt in this fact that it is revealed from the Rab of the universe”.

The astonishing fact about Quran is that it has remained unchanged even to a dot over the last fourteen hundred years. The Quran exists today in its original form, unaltered and undistorted. It is a living miracle.

Dear brothers and sisters: The subject matter of Quran is Man and his ultimate goal in life. The Quran contains principals, doctrines, and directions, for every sphere of human activity for this life and life after death. The Quran urges people to follow its guidance and teachings. The success of human beings on this earth and the life after death is depends on obedience to the Qur'anic teachings. And when we live our life according to the Quran and fear Allah then we may have Allah’s mercy. Allah (swt) says in Surah Al-Anam Ayah 155:

“And this is a blessed book the Quran, which we have sent down so follow it and fear Allah that you may receive mercy”.

Dear brothers and sisters: Allah the Almighty is Rahman and Raheem but to earn his mercy we have to fulfill the requirements, and that is to follow Al- Quran. There is a hadith in al- Bukhari that Allah made 100 parts of mercy and he gave one part to the entire world and kept 99 part for himself. Just imagine how much our parents love us

and when we compare it with Allah’s love it is only one percent. It shows us that how merciful ALLAH the Almighty is.

There is another hadith in bukhari and Allah said, “My mercy overcomes my anger.” That is why we should always ask Allah (swt) for his mercy. A question can come to our mind is that why do we have to follow the Quran in order to have Allah’s mercy? He the Almighty is merciful and will forgive us. Let me give you a simple example. When we buy a computer there is a booklet that gives the instructions to set up the computer, if we do not follow the instructions, the computer will not work. The same phenomenon applies in our life. The Quran gives us the guidance of how to live our life and if we follow it we will earn Allah’s mercy for us. Allah (swt) says in surah Nahl ayah 89: “And we have revealed Quran upon you in which is Guidance and mercy and good news for those who are Muslims”.

Dear brother and sister in surah Fatiha we ask Allah guides us to the straight path. Allah answer the prayer and said; “this is the book in its Guidance without doubt”.

The message of Quran is for all humanity, for the whole world of the east and west, for black and white, for the classes and the masses, for men and women, and for learned and ignorant. We have to follow the Quran in order to have Allah’s mercy. Al-Quran deals with Man, and not with civilization, ethnicity, or color. Man’s birth, and growth, laughter and crying, happiness and sorrow are alike. Time has changed, civilization has changed, but Man is same as it was in the time of creation of Adam and will remain the same until the last day. THAT is why Allah’s message is for all times; it is applicable to us today as it was at the time of prophet Mohammad (pbuh), 1400 years ago.

The Holy Quran is the last divine message from Allah (swt). It is Peace, Mercy, Rahma for humanity. Let us promise today that we will Inshallah read it, understand it, apply it, and spread it in order to have Allah (swt) Mercy on us.

Lets All of us pray together:

“O my Rub forgive me and Muslims, and cause us to enter your mercy and you are the most Merciful of the merciful. O my Rab forgive and have mercy as you are the best of those who show mercy.

Jazakallah Khair, Wasalaams.

Book Review

A Page From History

Last week a new movie about crusades, Kingdom of Heaven opened in theaters. The movie covers a short period in 1187, just before the fall of Jerusalem. The main character in the movie is Lord Balian, of Ibelin, who puts up a valiant defense of Jerusalem before its fall to Sultan Salah Ud Din’s forces. I decided to see the history books for a first hand account of Balian of Ibelin. The three books I consulted are the biography of Sultan Salah Ud Din Auyybi(1) by Beha Ud Din, The Crusades: The Flame of Islam(2) by Harold Lamb and Holy War(3) by Karen Armstrong.

Beha Ud Din, the noted biographer, who was also the Chief Judge of the Muslim Army does not mention Lord Balian in his biography of Salah Ud Din. Beha Ud Din notes, prior to the fall of Jerusalem the entire army of the Crusaders was defeated at the battle of Hattin, leaving none to defend Jerusalem.

According to Beha Ud Din , the Muslim forces opened a breach in the City wall of Jerusalem, facing Kidron Valley. The City would have fallen the next day but the residents of the city sued for a treaty and agreed to surrender Jerusalem on the terms that inhabitants of the city would be able to acquire freedom in exchange for a ransom of 10 Tyrian Dinars per man, 5 Dinars for woman and one Dinar for every child. They were allowed to take their possessions with them and were escorted peacefully to the Christian City of Tyre on the Lebanese coast.

Harold Lamb, in his book The Crusades: The Flame of Islam (1930), and Karen Armstrong in her book Holy War (1988) recount the story of Young Lord Balian of Ibelin with some variation. According to Karen Armstrong Balian got the permission from Slah Ud Din to enter the city of Jerusalem to retrieve his wife and children. At that time, Jerusalem was facing an imminent assault by Muslims who were gathering outside the City wall. Balian was the only Knight in the city and was asked by the people and nobles including the Queen of Jerusalem to take up the defense of the city. Balian told them that before entering the city he has promised Salah Ud Din not to bear arms against his forces.

However, Lord Balian could not see the plight of the residents of Jerusalem facing imminent doom. He wrote to Sultan Salah Ud Din asking him to release him from his oath and asked the Sultan to seek out his wife and children and protect them. Salah Ud Din responded that he understood and released him from his oath and promised to protect his family.

In the meantime, Balian tried to shore up the

defenses of the city. He knighted fifty esquires and sergeants to Knighthood without much ceremony. After Muslims opened up a breach in the city wall, Balian went out to negotiate with Salah Ud Din. Balian told Salah Ud Din if the residents of Jerusalem had to fight then they will fight to the last man and then will bring down every church and mosque by setting the city on fire. Salah Ud Din had no desire to see the city go up in flames. He offered to let go all the inhabitants of Jerusalem for a nominal ransom. In the end, Salah Ud Din paid for thousands of poor Jerusalem residents who could not afford to pay the required ransom.

The Muqaddimah: an Introduction to History by Ibn-Khaldun; Translated by Franz Rosenthal Bollingen Series/ Princeton University Press

The renown British historian, Arnold J. Toynbee said the following about Muqaddimah by Ibn Khaldun, “Undoubtedly the greatest work of its kind that has ever been created by any mind in any time or place... the most comprehensive and illuminating analysis of how human affairs work that has been made anywhere.”

Ibn Khaldun viewed history as a science. He was the first person who considered historical events as a product of social and economic forces rather than a chronological listing of events. This Muqaddimah consists of Ibn Khaldun’s Preface and Part 1 of his universal history book, Kitab al- Ibar. He is credited to create several new fields of studies, such as Sociology, Economic Sociology, and Political Science.

In his preface he explained how history should be read and its events understood. In his Muqaddimah, he writes about man and how his physical environment influence upon him. He gave an analysis of primitive social organization, the character of leadership, primitive human societies and their relationship to each other and the form of an urban society. He was influenced by Avicenna and stressed that individual human can not survive alone and needs to cooperate with other human beings to assure his survival. This cooperation among humans results in complicated social process called “Tamaddun” or urbanization. As urbanization takes place and grows more populace it turns into a civilization. According to Ibn Khaldun all civilization moves in cycles as one dynastic rule decays

PAGE 5 I.C.L.I. NEWS

and collapses a new dynastic order proceeds only to follow the same cycle.

Ibn Khaldun was born in Tunis on Ramadan 1, 732 AH (May 27, 1332 - March 17, 1406 AD) when the epoch of Muslim rule was coming to an end in Spain. He was from a prominent Andalusian family, which had migrated from Muslim Spain to Tunis, North Africa. Ibn-Khaldun’s grand father was a high ranking official in the royal court of Al-Mohades, in Spain. While his father Muhammad preferred a quite life of study and scholarship, who was also Ibn-Khaldun’s first teacher. As a child he received traditional Islamic education and was tutored in Quran, Hadith, Fiqh (Jurisprudence), and Arabic Poetry and Grammar. In his early twenties he left Tunis and took employment in the Royal Court of Abu Inan at Fez. Thats where he completed his education and spent time with eminent scholars of his time. He traveled extensively and was gifted with a rare insight to review historical events on a universal scale. He died in Cairo in at the ripe old age of 74 and is buried there in a Sufi Cemetery.

ASK ASMA

Dear Asma,

I'm a junior in high school and my prom is in May. I really want to go, but my parents aren't letting me. My brothers both got to attend, so I think it's unfair that I can't. I don't necessarily want to go with a boy, I just want to go with my friends and wear a nice dress. How can I convince my parents to let me go?

-Puzzled about the Prom

Dear Puzzled,

The dilemma you are facing is an all too common occurrence in Muslim families in the U.S.A.

Being Muslim our youngsters are taught to be modest in dress and behavior. While co-ed education is tolerated by many parents, social interactions with members of the opposite sex are frowned upon, especially interactions of a romantic nature. The tradition of Prom was initially a high school celebration which was fairly innocuous, but over the last two decades it has become a very socially competitive event where, unfortunately, many kids plan on achieving sexual milestones, as a rite of passage. Drinking alcohol and abusing drugs is a given. Many times the kids will rent hotel rooms and have after prom parties. While the prom may be chaperoned, once the kids leave the event they are on their own. There are invariably cases of date rape and alcohol related mishaps. It’s not only Muslim, but many other parents who shudder at the thought of their daughters going to the prom. Boys as well as girls can be victims of impaired judgments at these events. Girls however stand to lose more since they are more vulnerable physically. It may seem like double standards but in pretty much all cultures boys can and do get away with a lot.

I know a lot of girls who have gone to their proms without dates and with their girlfriends and not gone to after prom parties. I also know a lot of girls who decided not to waste hundreds of dollars on going to the prom and had small parties at their homes or went out for dinner and a movie with their friends.

There are many wholesome ways to mark the event and have fun, and yet maintain your cultural and religious identity.

Remember once the prom is over no one cares whether you went or not except yourself and you must make decisions which are best for you. You don’t have to cave in to peer pressure and follow the herd, because in the end you have to feel comfortable with yourself and your family. It would be a good idea to run it by your parents as well, so they are a supportive part of your decision making. I’m sure they would appreciate it.
