Open Letter To Congressman Peter King

Congressman Peter King, Third District, has launched a massive strike against American-Muslims on radio, TV and in Newsday, of what can best be described as WMD – words of mass distortion. Some of the charges he has leveled against the seven-million Muslims and 2,000plus mosques include:

Eighty-five percent of the mosques have “extremist leadership;” Muslims have not cooperated with law enforcement agencies; Islamic religious leaders are “the enemy living amongst us” and that he has been “walled out” when he has tried to talk with them...Muslims have not condemned 9/11 terrorists. These serious charges hit home when in the February 12th Newsday article: “King’s Remarks Outrage Muslims;” I read that his views were “crystallized for him” after he read that “some Jewish attendees walked out” at a presentation I made at Temple Beth El at a Sabbath eve service in October 2001.

1)Extremists in Leadership Positions: Responding to these accusations, Rabbi Jerome K. Davidson, Senior Rabbi at Temple Beth El, wrote:

The Jewish congregants who “walked out” were simply leaving to attend a party celebrating the naming of a baby in the family that had taken place earlier in the service. The Newsday reporter absurdly chose this to highlight and thereby misrepresented the true value of the evening.

Representative King, to my knowledge, was not in attendance at the service and unfortunately chose to base his view regarding “extremist” leaders of

mosques on anerroneous article

The Islamic Center and Temple BethEl represent the best hope of understanding between American-Muslims and Jews. Congressman King’s comments are indeed disappointing to those who care about strengthening such important bonds in this country.

In a recent visit to ICLI Rabbi David Rosen, the Israel - based director of inter religious affairs for American Jewish Committee said-“in a very short time you have become abeacon of light”Newsday Dec 15,2003.

2)Lack of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and Muslim leadership: I was invited and met the Director of the FBI, Mr. Robert Mueller in Washington, along with several other Muslim, Arab, and Sikh leaders from across the USA, resulting in several joint initiatives between these communities and the FBI.

In an interview Mr. Mueller granted to the Minaret Magazine, America’s largest American-Muslim magazine, on April 23, 2003, Director Mueller thanked the Muslim community and said that:

American-Muslims had been alert, and they have alerted us of situations where individuals may represent concern. I find it very helpful that a great number of our investigators have

received help from Americans, in fact MuslimAmericans. When I met with Muslim-American leaders, they do believe that it is important for our various communities to be alert because nobody wants another terrorist attack.

Mueller also said in the interview:

I would like to thank the Muslim-Americans for their support on the war against terrorism, and working with the FBI around the country, as well as state and local law enforcement on our task forces, for continuing and opening a dialogue and the exchanged views, for participation in our training.

After my visit to FBI headquarters, ICLI was provided a list of key contacts in various branches of law enforcement, in the event it’s members face travel or visa difficulties or need to contact law enforcement agencies.

Congressman King’s accusation about lack of cooperation between Muslims and law enforcement agencies, makes me wonder about the source and reliability of his information. Perhaps the same folks who, not too long ago, told us that Sadam Hussain in Iraq possessed chemical, biological and, nuclear weapons, which could be launched within 45 minutes, informed the Congressman as well.

3) Congressman Was “Walled Off”

The Muslims of Long Island, in particular, are puzzled by Congressman King’s remarks, since he had been a frequent visitor to the Islamic Center of Long Island pre9/11. He has been hosted in our homes; we have visited him at his offices in the Third District and Washington; we have had summer interns in his New York and Washington offices, and in the book Story of a Mosque in America, he wrote: “My visit to ICLI was memorable. I couldn’t help but be impressed with the work ethic, devotion to family and spiritual commitment so evident at the center. It has been gratifying for me to help build a political awareness in this, the fastest-growing religious group in America.” –page 128-129.

In my letter to Congressman King on February 12th, I wrote:

Congressman, we have known each other for over a decade. I have welcomed you in my home; you were a guest at my son’s wedding; you have been a frequent and welcome visitor to the mosque; I have lobbied you, in Washington, on behalf of American College of Physicians, and I have been welcome in your Massapequa office to discuss a variety of issues. If you had such serious concerns about me, and even more importantly about ICLI, why not call me and get the facts right. Your statements have caused great dis-

tress and, I am afraid, a lot of damage, and I am deeply saddened.

4)Muslims Did Not Condemm Sept 11 Attacks : Sadly, Congressmen King, unlike other elected officials post9/11, chose not to attend the numerous events he was invited to at ICLI, including the annual commemoration for 9/11 victims. He apparently did not review the statements of condemnation issued by ICLI after 9/11 which were reproduced in Westbury Times and played on Telicare TV channel for several weeks after 9/11 2001.

Congressman King has launched an unnecessary media attack on Muslims, for reasons best known to him, without any factual basis, and I am pleased to note the comments of the Democratic National Committee’s Chairman Terry McAuliffe when he stated:

Muslim-Americans are teachers, lawyers, doctors, business owners who have made invaluable contributions to our country. President Bush has said ‘those who feel they can intimidate our fellow citizens and take out their anger…represent the worst of humankind.’ That’s why I am calling on President Bush and the Republican leadership to condemn this latest example of hate-filled language

Congressman King’s accusation’s and divisive statements will, in my view, resonate beyond Long Island and further widen the gulf between America and the rest of the world. My several written and verbal communications to Congressman King have remained unanswered, my suggestion to the readers of this column is:

Call the office of Congressman at 516-541-4225 or via e-mail at: peter.king@mail.house.gov and ask for some hard evidence on which the Congressman based his inflammatory statements, particularly the list of Mosques who’s leadership is extremist and a definition of extremism would be very useful.

In the meantime we are advised in Quran Surah 94 V 5-6 So Verily With Every Difficulty There IsReliefnot once but twice. During this challenging time I have been gratified and delighted to see the outpouring of support from members of ALL faiths. My thanks to all who wrote, called or e-mailed. May Allah-God bless you. QURBANI at ICLI

For Eid ul Adha this year the ICLI executive committee decided to do a Qurbani project which will benefit mostly the poor and needy of the New York metropolitan area. This is probably the first time any Islamic Center has done something like this.

For this, initially we contacted Island harvest, a food pantry for poor and needy on Long Island (we have worked with this organization, usually in the month of Ramadan, donating non-perishable foods which the community collects for the poor). They were happy to know about our project and wanted the information as to where the animals would be slaughtered andif they have permit and documentation to do this kind of activity.

meat for their own consumption and also a part of the meat will be distributed to poor Muslim families. I would like to thank Br. Ali from ENA slaughterhouse in New Jersey and Brothers Zeb, Asif, and Suhailof Kashmiri Bazaar halal meat in Hicksville for all their help.

ICLI’s Strategic Retreat

Led by Professor Rafik Beekun Professor of Management, University of Nevada

We contacted ENA slaughterhouse in New Jersey and got the copies of their licenses along with the copies of the butcher license from Kashmiri Bazaar halal meat shop in Hicksville. Island Harvest wassatisfied by both the organizations' paperwork.

We advertised on Fridays and Sundays about this program. The cost for each animal to sacrifice was fixed at $150, Mashallah we were able to get more than 30 qurbani commitments. The animals were sacrificed on Eid day in New Jersey and the next day they were brought to Kashmiri Bazaar where the organ meats, lamb chops, ground meat, was separated and packaged. The following morning Island Harvest picked up the meat and distributed it to soup kitchens throughout themetropolitan area. Channel 12 covered the distribution and it was shown that evening on the local news. We were able tosave a small portion of the meat for Muslim brothers and sisters.

Mashallah, we were able to distribute about 1500 lbs of meat valued at almost $5000 for the needy in our neighborhoods. Inshallah, next year we will work to improve on this program and make sure everybody who takes part in this program is given a portion of the

ICLI’s Domestic Harmony Committee (DHC)

On Saturday Feb 14, 2004 Sarah Khan along with Shaida Khan attended the HOUSE OF PEACE Domestic Violence workshop, a sub-division of ICNA which deals with Domestic Violence and also runs a shelter under the Muslim Women’s Help Network in Jamaica, Queens. It was an informative session and gave us a great opportunity to network with other Muslim women organizations that deals with Domestic Violence (DV). DHC will present and lead a workshop session Topic: Issues and Challenges Faced by Muslim Adolescent Girls In America at the 5th Annual Conference in Stony brook State University of New York on Wednesday March 24, 2004 presented by Long Island fund for women and girls Gender Equity in Education in collaboration with Stony Brook University. The purpose of this session is to present research that explores the challenges and concerns faced by adolescent Muslim girls of first and second generation immigrant parents. The issues explored include the strategies that these young girls employ, despite the multitude of stressors and changes inherent in adolescence, to bridge the cultural divide in overcoming both internal and external barriers to gender equity. A special focus will be on providing guidelines for teachers and guidance counselors in middle and high schools to effectively address the needs of their female Muslim students without necessarily compromising their cultural or religious identities. This research is about meaningful input from racial/religious minority female adolescents, sharing their experiences, in their own voices, on the margins of the American society presented by DHC member Rafia Hamid March 2004

Thanks to our wonderful and committed active member Dr. Kushalata Ahmed who organized DHC’s first Movie Night - fundraising event on Friday February 13, 2004. Featuring “Mr. and Mrs. Iyer”, written and directed by Aparna Sen. We had a full house, including dinner and a lively discussion among our guests. Mr. & Mrs. Iyer con-

ceptualized as a love story set amidst violence but ultimately says a lot more. On the whole, the film reflects ace director Aparna Sen's humanism depicted through finely blended emotions. It mirrors a frightening reality in the wake of the WTC attacks and the Gujarat carnage through a masterfully told story, which portrays the socio-political conditions of India, but what it does even better, is explores human nature and relationships under various circumstances.

Our own super dynamic woman Nazli Chaudhri, was a guest speaker at the American Association of University Women AAUW on Feb 12 at the Garden City library. The topic was Myths and Misconceptions about Islam and Muslim Women. She described her presentation this way “I started by setting the stage by describing the historical backdrop of pre-Islamic Arabia. What type of society and culture existed? What rights women had. What type of a person was Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Then I described the message of Islam and what changes it brought about. I then talked about women in Islam and those mentioned in the Qur’an,starting with Khadijah, the first woman to accept Islam, who was a successful businesswomen and proposed marriage toProphet Muhammad (PBUH). Mary mother of Jesus, the only woman mentioned by name in the Qur’an, giving her a place of honor unlike any other woman. Umm Musa, mother of Musa and how she received Wahi from Allah promising her that her son will be a messenger. FinallyI discussedBilquis, the Queen of Sheba. Despite the fact that she was a ruler over a nation, most Muslims hold leadership as improper for women. Once having given some background information and examples of women in the Qur’an I went on to tackle the misconceptions. Misunderstandings arise when things are taken out of context or when the personal bias of an interpreter colors the translation of the scripture or when cultural influences mingle with religious practices. Some of the topics discussed were Jihad; an overused and erroneously translated term, veil or Hijab; thought of as an oppressive tool, tribal customs that deny women their Islamic rights, polygamy; and the very restricted circumstances it was permitted in, and suicide bombers;how Islam holds all life as a gift and all must be done to preserve life.

I had a very attentive and curious audience and they had

Arwa Bint Ahmed - The Woman who ruled Yemen forty years (died 1137)

Queen Arwa is considered the most distinctive and famous Yemeni ladies after Queen Biliqis of Sheba kingdom. Her full name was known as Arwa bint Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Al-Qasem Al-Sulaihi. She was born in 440 Hijria year. A lady named Asma bint Shihab took care of raising and educating Queen Arwa.

Some History books had mentioned that she dreamt during her childhood of becoming a ruler. In fact she acquired an extensive culture, in addition, to her ability of memorizing the poems, stories, and historical dates. Again other books widely described how deep this lady had gone in her studies and cultural knowledge e.g. reciting of Quran, interpretations of the prophet's Hadeeth. In fact, her own people and others later on called her "the little Bilqis".

The Sulaihi Queen Arwa left traces on her comments and critical views on a number of books. This showed depth of her study and cultures on various subjects. On the other hand, she contributed to many benevolent works, such as facilitating the accesses of trade, and:

- Paid particular attention to the education process through building many school and mosques;

- Expanded the "Big Mosque " of Sana'a;

- Ordered enlisting a record of all names of the Imams, starting from Ali bin Abi Taleb to the last since then was alive- the order stated for such lists to be posted on the front wall of the "Big Mosque".

- Constructed Al-Gurba mosque in Yareem land and "AlGame" mosque in jibla.

As for her ruling system, history records started that at the age of eighteen, Queen Arwa was married in 458 Hijria to a crown prince named Ahmed. She was placed by the king (her father's husband) in charge of collecting tax revenues of Aden. These were annually estimated one hundred. Thousand dinars. The Queen took the responsibility burden of ruling the country, and many issues were delegated to her. At the time when the crown prince stayed paralyzed in bed, she totally took the responsibility. She chose Jibla region as a resort where she resided there a couple of months every year.

She actually proceeded with the affairs of the kingdom until the death of her husband. Though the rule became week for some time, Queen Arwa was able to continue for 40 years to rule the whole country from Jibla, through her strong personality and the appointed state ministers and provinces' governors. She even succeeded in the killing of Saeed Al-Awal who was among the planned coup of Ali bin Mohammed Al-sulaihi, the father of her husband (the

crown prince). To show more of her impacts and influence over the Sulaihi State in Yemen, several history novels mentioned the fact that Queen Arwa alone advised her husband to transfer the throne from Sana'a to Jibla. Initially, the crown prince refused proposal, but she was wise enough to convince him for implementing it. He ruled for a while from Jibla during which she personally supervised the construction of "Al-Game" mosque. When he became sick, Queen Arwa remained in Jibla running all affairs of the Sulaihi State. Queen Arwa was known the ruler who book advice's from many officials around her. She proceeded in raising the economic growth of the state, and the standard of living of the people. "She took great care in cattle rearing, cultivations, and other issues such as birth control.

Queen Arwa died in Jibla in the Hijria year 532, and was buried in the mosque that she herself had built. What signify the good impacts of the Queen on the inherent feelings of Jibla's inhabitants since her death till now is the fact that many Muslim are continuously coming to pay visits to the Queen's tomb in Jibla. These visits symbol the Queen in the form of a kind ruler who was never known of any cruel judgment or selfishly hot tempers!

The Honorable Women Of Islam (From their point of view)

We are the honorable women of Islam! We don't sell our bodies for people to sell their products; You won't find us advertising for stuff like new trucks. We don't dress up on the streets as if were some sort of merchandise, Keep your dirty hands to yourself, or, with Allah, you will pay the price.

We are the honorable women of Islam! Oh you men, keep your eyes to your self; we're not products on display, Throw your pickup lines away; we don't wanna hear what you have to say. We're not like other women; they sleep all around town, And to that despicable level, we will never come down.

We are the honorable women of Islam! Yes, we wear the hijab; its our badge of honor from Al-Mu'eez. We don't dress like other women; we are free from their immodest disease. We don't sell out and put our selves on billboards, We have dignity, and from Allah, we will have our rewards.

We are the honorable women of Islam! You won't find us in parties, getting drunk and disgraced, What a shame! Women like that have had their honor erased. We don't dress like other women; we're not giving every man a cheap thrill, We don't dress like the prostitutes that are out just chasing the dollar bill.

We are the honorable women of Islam! Don't come to us looking for some dirty one night stand! You better turn away from us, and get yourself a different plan. We aren't messing around; we're busy raising up our nation, That's right, were busy taking Islam to the next generation.

We are the honorable women of Islam! We are the ones who raise the ummah and strive to make it great, If we didn't do our part, then for the ummah, what would be its fate? From babies to leaders, we are the ones who make them what they are. We are the honorable women of Islam, without us this ummah won't go far!

Islamic Heritage

"The best fasts after the fasts of Ramadan are those of the month of Muharram."

Muharram is the month with which the Muslims begin their lunar Hijrah Calendar. It is one of the four sanctified months about which the Holy Quran says, "The number of the months according to Allah is twelve months (mentioned) in the Book of Allah on the day in which He created heavens and the earth. Among these (twelve months) there are four sanctified" .

These four months, according to the authentic traditions are the months of Zulqadah, Zulhijjah, Muharram and Rajab. All the commentators of the Holy Quran are unanimous on this point, because the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in his sermon on the occasion of his last Hajj, has declared: "One year consists of twelve months, of which four are sanctified months, three of them are in sequence; Zulqadah, Zulhijjah, Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab."

The specific mention of these four months does not mean that any other month has no sanctity, because the month of Ramadan is admittedly the most sanctified month in the year. But these four months were specifically termed as sanctified months for the simple reason that their sanctity was accepted even by the pagans of Makkah.

In fact, every month, out of the twelve, is originally equal to the other, and there is no inherent sanctity, which may be attributed to one of them in comparison to other months. When Allah Almighty chooses a particular time for His special blessings, then it acquires sanctity out of His grace.

Thus, the sanctity of these four months was recognized right from the days of Prophet Ibrahim. Since the Pagans of Makkah attributed themselves to Prophet Ibrahim they observed the sanctity of these four months and despite their frequent tribal battles, they held it unlawful to fight in these months.

In the Shariah of our Holy Prophet (PBUH) the sanctity of these months was upheld and the Holy Quran referred to them as the "sanctified months"

The month of Muharram has certain other characteristics peculiar to it, which are specified below.

Fasting during the month

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) has said:

Although the fasts of the month of Muharram are not obligatory, yet, the one who fasts in these days out of his own will and choice is entitled to a great reward by Allah Almighty. The Hadith cited above signifies that the fasts of the month of Muharram are most rewarding ones among the Nafl fasts i.e. the fasts one observes out of his own choice without being obligatory on him.

The Hadith does not mean that the award promised for fasts of Muharram can be achieved only by fasting for the whole month. On the contrary, each fast during this month has merit. Therefore, one should avail of this opportunity as much as one can.

The day of Ashurah

Although the month of Muharram is a sanctified month as a whole, yet, the 10th day of Muharram is the most sacred among all its days. The day is named Ashurah

According to the Holy companion Ibn Abbas. The Holy Prophet (PBUH), when migrated to Madinah, found that

(Continuedfrom page 6)

the Jews of Madinah used to fast on the 10th day of Muharram. They said that it was the day on which the Holy Prophet Musa (Moses) and his followers crossed the Red Sea miraculously and the Pharaoh was drowned in its water.

On hearing this from the Jews, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said, "We are more closely related to Musa than you" and directed the Muslims to fast on the day of Ashurah. (Abu Dawood)

It is also reported in a number of authentic traditions that in the beginning, fasting on the day of Ashurah was obligatory for the Muslims. It was later that the fasts of Ramadan were made obligatory and the fast on the day of ''Ashurah” was made optional. Aishah has said:

"When the Holy Prophet (PBUH) came to Madinah, he fasted on the day of Ashurah and directed the people to fast it. But when the fasts of Ramadan were made obligatory, the obligation of fasting was confined to Ramadan and the obligatory nature of the fast of Ashurah was abandoned. One can fast on this day, if he so wills, or can avoid fasting, if he so wills."

However, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) used to fast on the day of Ashurah even after the fasting in Ramadan was made obligatory.

Abdullah Ian Masud reports that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) preferred the fast of Ashurah to the fast of other days and preferred the fast of Ramadhan to the fast of Ashurah. (Bukhari and Muslim)

In short, it is established through a number of authentic hadith that fasting on the day of Ashurah is Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and makes one entitled to a great reward.

According to another Hadith, it is more advisable that the fast of Ashurah should either be prefixed or suffixed by another fast. It means that one should fast two days: the 9th and 10th of Muharram or the 10th and 11th. The reason of this additional fast as mentioned by the Holy Prophet (PBUH) is that the Jews used to fast on the day of Ashurah alone, and the Holy Prophet (PBUH) wanted to distinguish the Islamic way of fasting from that of Jews. Therefore, he advised the Muslims to add another fast to that of Ashurah.

Some traditions signify another feature of the day of Ashurah.

According to these traditions one should be more generous to his family by providing more food to them on this day as compared to other days. These traditions are not very authentic according to the science of Hadith. Yet, some Scholars like Baihaqi and Ibn Hibban have accepted them as reliable.

What is mentioned above is all that is supported through authentic sources about Ashurah.

However, there are some legends and misconceptions with regard to Ashurah that have managed to find their way into the minds of the ignorant, but have no support of authentic Islamic sources, some very common of them are these:

This is the day in which Adam was created.

This is the day in which Prophet Ibrahim was born.

This is the day in which Allah accepted the repentance of Prophet Ibrahim.

This is the day on which the Qiyamah (dooms-day) will take place.

Whoever takes bath in the day of Ashurah will never get ill.

All these and other similar whims and fancies are totally baseless and the traditions referred to in this respect are not worthy of any credit.

Some people take it as Sunnah to prepare a particular type of meal in the day of Ashurah. This practice, too, has no basis in the authentic Islamic sources.

Some other people attribute the sanctity of Ashurah to the martyrdom of Hadhrat Hussain during his battle with the Syrian army. No doubt, the martyrdom of Hadhrat Hussain is one of the most tragic episodes of our history. Yet, the sanctity of Ashurah cannot be ascribed to this event for the simple reason that the sanctity of 'Ashurah was established during the days of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) much earlier than the birth of Hadhrat Hussain.

On the contrary, it is one of the merits of Hadhrat Hussain that his martyrdom took place on the day of Ashurah. Another misconception about the month of Muharram is that it is an evil or unlucky month, for Hadhrat Hussain was martyred in it. It is for this misconception that people avoid holding marriage ceremonies in the month of Muharram. This is again a baseless concept which is contrary to the express teachings of the Holy Quran and the Sunnah. Such superstitions have been totally negated by the Holy Prophet (PBUH). If the death of an eminent person in a particular day renders that day unlucky for all times to come, one can hardly find a day, free from this bad luck, out of 365 days of the whole year, because each and every day has a history of the demise of some eminent person. The Holy Quran and the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) have made us free from such superstitious beliefs,

Another wrong practice related to this month is to hold the lamentation and mourning ceremonies in the memory of martyrdom of Hadhrat Hussain.

As mentioned earlier, the event of Karbala is one of the most tragic events of our history, but the Holy Prophet (PBUH) has forbidden us from holding the mourning ceremonies on the death of any person. The people of Jahiliyyah (Ignorance) used to mourn over their deceased relatives or friends through loud lamentations, by tearing their clothes and by beating their cheeks and chests. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) stopped the Muslims from doing all this and directed them to observe patience by saying "Inna lillaahi wa innaa ilayhi raaji oon". A number of authentic hadith are available on the subject.

To quote only one of them:

"He is not from our group who slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes and cries in the manner of the people of jahiliyyah."

All the authentic jurists are unanimous on the point that the mourning of this type is absolutely impermissible. Even Hadhrat Hussain shortly before his demise, had advised his beloved sister Sayyidah Zainab not to mourn over his death in this manner. He said:

"My dear sister, I swear upon you that you, in case I die, shall not tear your clothes, nor scratch your face, nor curse anyone for me or pray for your death".

It is evident from this advice of Hadhrat Hussain that this type of mourning is condemned even by the blessed person for the memory of whom these mourning ceremonies are held. Every Muslim should avoid this practice and abide by the teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and his beloved grand child Hadhrat Hussain.

Blessings of Muharram

It is the first month of the Islamic Calendar.

The word "Muharram" means "Forbidden." Even before Islam, this month was always known as a scared month in which all unlawful acts were forbidden, prominently the shedding of blood.

A blessing of Muharram:- There are many bounties of this month, especially the tenth of Muharram.

Two of the many virtues of the 10th of Muharram:-

On this day he who spends more lavishly for the sake of his family members, Allah (SWT) will bestow blessing upon the sustenance of the following year.

Abu Qataada has related that the Prophet (PBUH) has reported to have said, It is my thought that by fasting on the 10th of Muharram Allah (SWT) will pardon the sins of the past year. (Tirmizi)

Events of Muharram

Hadhrat Hussain was martyred in this month.

Shaykhain Tirmizi & Haakim has narrated from Anas that the following verse: "Allah may forgive thee of thy sins that which is past and that which is to come." (Al-Fath) was revealed on the 10th of Muharram.

The Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) went to defeat Bani Muhaarin and Bani Tha'laba (Tribes of Bani Gatfan) in the year 4 A.H. (Asahhus-siyar).

Sunni Misconceptions about Shias

(Islamicity.com)

One of the ironies of our Islamic history is the Shia-Sunni divide. We must make every effort to eliminate misconceptions on both sides of the divide. Following are some common misconceptions that Sunnis have about Shias.

Responses have been consulted with two Shia scholars in America; Dr. A. S. Hashim of Washington and Imam Muhammad Ali Elahi of Detroit.

Misconception 1: Shias have a different Quran. They add another 10 chapters to the original Quran.

Response: Not true. I have checked many times the Quran kept in Shia homes and mosques. I still find it the same as the original Quran. More recently, I took care of an Iranian lady patient hospitalized here. I saw a copy of the Quran by her side. I borrowed it from her and browsed through cover to cover. In Arabic it was the same as our Quran. Of course, since I did not know the Persian language, I can't say much about the translation. It is a sin to even say that the Quran can be changed or added to by Shia when it is protected by God.

Misconception 2: Some Shia consider Ali as God. Response: Not true. It is disbelief to even think of such a thing. During the time of Ali, some pagan groups called Gholat did consider Ali as Lord. When he found out, they were severely punished.

Misconception 3: Shias have different declarations of faith and they add to the call to prescribed prayer.

Response: The declaration to become a Muslim, as administered to non-Muslims, is the same. Some Shia add, "Ali is a friend of God or Ali is a spiritual leader of God," after the call to prescribed prayer, but not as part of the call to prescribed prayer.

Misconception 4: Shias do not perform Sunnah prayers. Sunnah prayers are non obligatory prayers performed by Prophet Muhammad.

Response: Shias do perform non-obligatory prayers, 36 cycles per day in total, but call it Nawafil and not Sunnah.

Misconception 5: Some Shia believe the Angel Gabriel made a mistake and prophet hood was meant for Ali and not Muhammad (PBUH).

Response: Not true. No Shia thinks of such false claims. "Only demented minds think of such questions."

Misconception 6: Shias slander and ridicule the first three caliphs (Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman) and Prophet Muhammad's wife, Ayisha.

Response: Shia consider the first three caliphs as great companions and good Muslim administrators, but not

spiritual leaders (imams). Imam Jafar Sadiq, whose mother and grand mother came from the line of Abu Bakr, said of Abu Bakr, "He gave me birth twice." Ayisha is respected by Shias as the "Mother of Believers," as Ali respected her when he sent her back from Basra to Madinah after the Battle of the Camel. If some Shia do slander the three caliphs and Ayisha, they do it out of ignorance and should ask God's forgiveness.

Misconception 7: Shias combine all five prayers into one prayer in the evening.

Response: Not true. In Shia mosques, whether in Iran or the USA, all five daily prayers are performed. Some working Shia do combine noon and afternoon and evening and night, but Shia scholars recommend performing them separately. Such combinations may not be ideal, but better than not praying at all. How can a Sunni who does not pray at all be better than a Shia who combines prayers?

Misconception 8: Shias do not pay Zakat (poor-due). Response: Not true. They not only pay 2.5% left over from savings as zakat, but also an additional 20% as khums or general charity.

Misconception 9: Shias practice temporary marriages (mutah). Response: Mutah (temporary marriages) was allowed during the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and he himself practiced it. Ibn Zubayr was born out of the temporary marriage. Later on Caliph Umar prohibited it due to social reasons as the Islamic community was rapidly expanding. Shias discourage mutah but do not consider it prohibited. Some do abuse this. As a temporary privilege during travel, it is better than adultery.

Misconception 10: They consider Imams infallible and above the prophets.

Response: Not true. All prophets are born Prophet but as mentioned in Quran about Abraham that after passing the test, a prophet becomes a leader (Imam). Imams are carriers of the message of Islam. Shias consider Ali only as an Imam, but Muhammad (PBUH) is the Prophet (Nabi), Messenger (Rasul) and leader (imam).

Getting the most out of weekend schools

The amount of attention parents display in their children education is shown in the performance of the students in their exams and their attitude towards their teachers.

Below are a few suggestions on how parents can have their children extract the most out of Weekend School.

The weekend school usually last about 4 hours, which is not enough time for the teachers to cover the curriculum in a comprehensive way. This is where the role of the parents comes into play. Keeping a close attention on their children's homework and assignments, may help children remain focussed on learning at the weekend Schools.

Showing Genuine Concern for Child's Education

Parents should exhibit as much, if not more, interest in the weekend school studies of their children. Usually this is not the situation. Parents usually drop off their children late to Islamic schools, many times don't even bring them, and further more if students do arrive at school, they have not completed the required homework, and frequently come without the necessary books or previous weeks handouts.

Frequent Meetings with Child's Teacher

Parents should have a private meeting with the principal and each of the teachers of their child on routinely to evaluate the performance. This will also give a psychological boost to the teachers, who are mostly on a voluntary basis, and will help them to be more professional in their approach to dispersing their knowledge.

Parents Taking Active Role in Schools

Parents should become members of the PTO (Parents and Teachers Organization). They can volunteer to be teachers in the school. This will place them in direct contact with the school administration and help them to submit proposals to transform the school for the better. The weekend school teachers are less appreciated and often times feel that parents just drop their children off in the morning and go shopping until the time of the end of the school.

The Bottom Line

Children follow their parents. When parents show interest and importance to something, children likewise will get motivated to follow them. No wonder we usually see that children of highly educated parents who are involved in their children's studies also tend to excel in their studies. Since gaining knowledge of our deen is an obligation, parents should assist their children in fulfilling this obligation both at home and in School.

ICLI Students Support Communities In Need

Al Hamdu-lilah, ICLI students are always eager to participate in projects to support communities in need. Just a few weeks ago the student community collected non-perishable items for Long Island Harvest, an organization which distributes food to Long Islanders in need. Most recently, the students are supporting a health kit drive to benefit individuals in Iraq who are in dire need of health and hygiene supplies.

ICLI and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Huntington coordinated the health kit “drive” jointly. ICLI student plans include soliciting donations from family and friends to sponsor a health kit for Iraqi individuals in need. Representatives were chosen from each class to manage the collection of funds and to stress the importance of helping those in need to their classmates. The plans include a festive gathering on 2/29 of over 20 youth from ICLI and the UUC for the purpose of putting the kits together and joining together in common purpose.

We look forward to sharing more details with you on the students’ charitable efforts in this project in our next issue.

The rules : All age levels may participate. The topic is Women in Islam; students may write about women from a historical perspective as in the time of the Prophet (PBUH), or their idea of a woman’s role in society today from an Islamic perspective, or about Muslim women in their life now, who have a positive impact on home, community, profession, etc. Entries should be no more than 200 words. Entries can be in the form of a poem, essay or creative writing. Entries are due by 3/14. Please put entries in an envelope marked Student Writing Contest, include your name, class and age on the outside of the envelope and submit to the Education Office at ICLI.

Tell me; who are you going to vote for in the coming Presidential election?

Wait. Here’s a better question…

Why are you going to vote in the coming Presidential election?

Before we flip on CNN to watch our aspiring candidates, or before we visit CAIR’s website to see who is the most “Muslim-friendly” politician, or even before we open our mouths to voice our joy or concern over the direction of our country, I think it is important to take a moment to actually think about our right to vote, its promises and its possible implications for the Muslim community at large. Every Muslim reading this I think (I hope) is prepared to cast their vote in November for their candidate for the President of the United States. And every one of those Muslims I think (hope) is cognizant of the rights and responsibilities that come with that vote. So before we even begin to care about who we are going to vote for, we should—as Muslims and Americans, be aware that we are all armed with the ability to change what we don’t like. And to ignore such a God given right (yes, God given) would not only be foolish and un-American, but un-Islamic as well.

Many of us in the Muslim community are first-generation Muslims, while many of the younger generation are born citizens and members of this great Democracy. But no matter what generational and cultural gap may exist between these two groups, both are Muslims first and both have grievances about their nation that they would like addressed. Whether those

be the Bush’s tax cuts, the war in Iraq, the bias towards Israel, the detention of Muslims or the issue of gay marriage, all are issues that we as Americans have the

right to address, and as Muslims the responsibility to reform.

We are all familiar with the story of the city corrupted by evil and condemned by God to be destroyed. In that city there was the one pure man, who although himself righteous, was given the same fate as his contemporaries because of his unwillingness to push for change. Well the same holds true for Muslims in America today.

Now am I saying that if you don’t vote you will go to Hell? Absolutely not. But just remember, if you don’t vote I don’t care. Don’t whine to me about the state of Palestine, or the unfair detention of Muslims or the blatant bias towards Muslims in the Media. Only once we as Muslims are ready to stand up and take responsibility for our actions as well as our future will we become a force to be reckoned with. And only once we decide to begin with that simple vote in November will we fulfill our duties not just to ourselves and our country, but to God as well.

Fareed Zakaria: Reporter, intellectual, Harvard grad, leader… Muslim. Described in the Esquire magazine as "one of the 21 most important people of the 21st Century," Fareed Zakaria had made a name for himself as the editor of Foreign Affairs magazine, a columnist for Time & Newsday and the author of several books. There’s even talk that maybe he’ll be the next secretary of state, imagine that.

adith of the Month H

A reflection by Anbia Gul Awan

Islam rejects withdrawal from society. It urges Muslims to live in society and carry out our responsibilities towards our fellow beings. The practice of going into the wilderness and worshipping Allah (swt) may have been found in earlier religions, but it is not

(except in certain circumstances) a part of Islam. That is why, in this Tradition, we are told that a person who lives among people and suffers but remains patient, is far better than a person who cuts himself off from the people and is at peace.

Islam Islam

They say the hijab is a symbol of oppression

But in all actuality, purity is its reflection

They say we are supporters of terrorist groups

But how can that be if it is our children that are killed by terrorist troops Divided we are yet united they stand

As we watch them destroy our land

But yet Islam is still the fastest spreading religion in the world

ISLAMIC GAMES

Hadith of the Month

He who mixes with people and endures their harm, is better than he who does not mix with them and does not show patience, if he receives harm from them.

Faster than the bullets they pay for that go on to kill innocent boys and girls

And even in this haven of liberty, we are still discriminated against

Dignity and justice for all cant be so in a country that has never seen the birth of a colored president

They often say that the pen is greater than the sword

They murder the innocent yet don’t understand they are going against their own word
