Cattle CONNECTION November 2017

Never underestimate edema.

Dairy producers encounter many challenges when transitioning fresh cows to milking. A challenge that can be underestimated is udder edema, which is considered to be a contributing factor in udder scald. When impacts of udder edema and udder scald are combined, economic studies showed more net effect on milk losses in the first 30 to 50 days in milk than other post-partum conditions. Dairy managers, who put a high priority on animal well-being look for ways to prevent udder edema and pay attention to mammary comfort. At Beer Cattle, Berne, Indiana, 200 heifers are calved monthly and milked a couple weeks before going to new homes. For 2 years, they’ve been using Udder Comfort™ for all fresh heifers with a light application 2x/day for 7 days after calving. “Heifers reached peak production faster with softer, more pliable udders and a production increase averaging over 3 pounds with collaborative SCC below 200,000,” says Keith Beer. He recently compared 2x/day with a heavier amount of Udder Comfort for shorter periods (3 days).

“We saw very good results on 90 to 95% of nearly 200 heifers receiving this method. Milk flow increase was in the same range, averaging over 3 pounds additional milk by 2 weeks after calving and similar udder quality,” he says. At Sandy Valley Farms, Scandinavia, Wisconsin, beautiful productive udders are hallmarks of elite genetics and attention to cow comfort. All first and second lactation ladies (top photo) get Udder Comfort spray daily prefresh for one week before calving. The 400 cows are milked 2x/day with a recent test of (2x) 88 lbs 4.2F 3.2P and 53,000 SCC. That’s a lot of quality milk!
