WINSTAR LION: GLOBAL AG ALLIANCE Lionel-Jedi-Cabriolet ‘Lion is the modern kind, the bull to use to reduce your carbon footprint,’ comments Wout Vandergoot . ‘He’s a big-time milk bull transmitting smaller size and so has a very good score for feed saved.’ At +2305lb milk with +.02%f -.01%p, Lion is certainly a high production bull. He is one of a group of bulls in the Global Ag Alliance program sourced from WinStar Genetics in Idaho. Sired by Lionel (Frazzled-Montross), he is backed by a Jedi-Cabriolet -Freddie from a deep cow family at Rosylane in Wisconsin. ‘Lion is very attractive to larger commercial herds and he has also sold very well for us in Mexico,’ adds Vandergoot. Expect angular, open ribbed, dairy frames with impressive rear udders. Protect for high pins and udder depth.

MR AIJA AXL TRACTOR: ST.JACOBS Axl-Doc-Commander Aija King-Doc Wichita is quickly earning a reputation as a great brood cow. She is scored VG-88 with an EX mammary just 21 days into her second lactation, and her son Tractor, sired by King Royal son Axl, already has a strong following. AURORA MINKAH: ACCELERATED Chase-Medley-Expresso Minkah is a high component bull transmitting impressive udders and excelling for fitness traits. He will sire moderate size with extremely low SCS and is outstanding for daughter fertility traits. He is also A2A2 and BB. Minkah was bred by Aurora Ridge Dairy located at Aurora, NY, in the Finger Lakes region. Aurora Ridge is a 2,000-cow commercial dairy with an outstanding nucleus of registered Holsteins. They currently boast 3 heifers in the top-25 gTPI of the breed. Minkah is sired by Chase (Solution-Helix) and is backed by Medley-Expresso-Commander. ‘Minkah’s dam is currently scored GP-82 as a 2-year-old. I expect her to be a very strong candidate for VG upon calving again,’ explains sire analyst Rick VerBeek. ‘Behind her are 5 generations of VG dams that carry the Aurora prefix. We’ve already used Minkah heavily for sons.’

Clear-Echo: Dynamic Breeding

Program Producing AI Bulls

Among the high-ranking, young genomic bulls that have become widely available over recent months are Clear-Echo Max Mashak (2983 gTPI), Clear-Echo Max Kashton (2980) and Clear-Echo Maximus Deke (2915). The Peck family’s Clear-Echo herd in New York

’m sure you have all noticed the steady change – the genomic young-sire lists are increasingly dominated by the prefixes of the stud-based bull breeding programs. The number of private herds that continue to compete in this aspect of the Holstein industry continues to dwindle. It’s a tough market, requiring mega-commitment involving lots of embryos and lots of recipients. Kevin Peck from Clear-Echo Farm at Schuylerville in eastern New York likes a challenge. He continues to operate an IVF program with sufficient scope to remain in that market. ‘We take 6-9 donors for collection every second week,’ explains Kevin. ‘For the really young heifers – 7, 8 or 9 months old – they will get flushed every 4 weeks. After that we move them up to every 2 weeks, or we will do them twice and then give them a break of 4 weeks. We continue to fiddle with the schedule a bit but in general we find trying to do them every two weeks, especially when they are young, hurts the number of embryos you get. We still operate as a closed herd, implanting the embryos in our own recipients. Really it’s the number of recipients we have available that governs how many donors we work. If we find we have to start freezing embryos and putting them in the tank then it’s time to reduce the number of donors. There is nothing to be gained having embryos sitting in a tank: As soon as they are made they need to be in a recipient.’

PRE-RELEASE SEMEN Clear-Echo has contracts with Select and with Semex to use pre-release semen from the top young genomic bulls and in return the studs have first option on any male calves produced. ‘We are actually transitioning to using a little more sexed semen. It’s really tough trying to produce bulls that are high enough to get into the studs now, and getting harder all the time,’ continues Peck. ‘Getting a few more heifers means we can sell a few or sell a few IVF sessions. And really the main goal is to improve the genetics of the herd and we’ve

found some of these ‘second tier’ females with the right combination of longevity, SCS and reproductive traits are very profitable genetics.’ The Clear-Echo breeding program now includes a little beef-on-dairy. ‘It’s always nice in the short term to have a more valuable calf to help generate more income, but on the other hand, every dairy-beef calf we get means one less recipient that we might have had instead. So far our heifer pens are still full and we have a good supply of recipients but we won’t be expanding the beef-on-dairy side of it very much.’

RAMO 1200 At the time when the German sire Ramos was gaining an international reputation due to the impressive health traits and longevity he transmitted, Clear-Echo calved in two Ramos sisters out of a Hershel who traced through Decision-Lord Lily-Jabot-Mascot-Pat Troy and Apostle: This had been quite an outcross pedigree for a number of generations. The two Ramos heifers scored 87 and 86 and were offered as a choice through

the second Bacon-Hill Bonanza Sale. De-Su was the successful bidder and took Ramo 1199 VG-86, who later became the dam of Planet’s most successful son, Bookem. Ramo 1200 remained at Clear-Echo, going on to score EX-94, and her impact on the herd has continued to expand. ‘When we first started into genomics and the IVF program we were working with 4 home-bred cow families but the other 3 dropped by the way and the Ramo 1200 line dominated,’ explains Kevin. ‘Then over the years we’ve added a few members of the Cookie-Cutter Halo family, and as with any and everyone who has worked with that line, we’ve had a lot of success with them and they have become the other dominant cow family in our herd.’

YOUNG BULLS While Ramo 1200 and Halo have become the key cow families, there are always surprises in cattle breeding. The latest young bulls Mashak, Kashton and Deke are not the products of either family! ‘To be able to flush 7-8 donors every 2 weeks we keep 12 animals in our donor program. At present there are 11 young heifers and just 1 that is now pregnant, a sister to Kashton and Deke, and we’ll keep doing her until she’s well into her pregnancy,’

explains Peck. ‘We rarely flush animals that are already milking. However, we calved in a Frazzled heifer a couple of years ago that we really liked, and although we had flushed her as a heifer, we decided to flush her a few more times. Even though she was now older, that’s when she produced her highest bulls – that’s how we got Kashton and his brother Deke.’ The Frazzled is now on her third calf and her pedigree traces through Silver-Distinction-Lewis-Super to Welcome Colby Taya (the dam of Tango), bred by Kevin’s cousin and neighbor Bill Peck, of Welcome Stock Farm, and then the pedigree runs back into more Clear-Echo breeding. Like the other two, the Mashak bull is also by Maximus (Rolan-Blowtorch-Yoder), and he is out of a first lactation Tahiti that traces through Jedi-Tatum-Mogul from a branch of the Morningview Converse Judy family.

CANDY-MEAL Clear-Echo grows all the forages to feed the herd. ‘We usually have 750 acres of corn, chop as much as we need for silage, and then leave the rest to harvest as grain, which depending on the year, amounts to about two-thirds of the grain we need,’ explains Kevin. One change to the ration over recent years is the addition of candy-meal, ground-up candy that has passed its use-by-date. ‘For years we fed cotton-seed, but when it would get too expensive we cut it out and then our butterfat would crash. Now since we’ve started using candy-meal, the sugar and fat have made the difference and our components have stayed the same.’ The future for ClearEcho looks bright. Kevin and Carrie have two sons, Matthew, who has just finished his degree at Cornell, and Ryan, who is now finished high school. ‘They are both interested in Holsteins and farming. Matthew is planning on working at a large commercial dairy operation to get more off-farm experience for 2-3 years before returning to the farm, and Ryan is looking at which college to attend. We are of course delighted that they are both interested in farming.’ l

50 YEARS AGO

1972 CHAMPION COW FLIES TO MADISON Wind Drift Countess Nora was Grand Champion in 1970 and 1972. Nora was the 1st Supreme Champion at the Central National Holstein Show in Madison, now known as WORLD DAIRY EXPO. Nora flew to Madison from Harrisburg, PA with stablemate MD-MAPLE-LAWN MARQUIS GLAMOUR. The cows were owned by ALLENDAIRY of Mechanicsburg, PA. I visited with Ron Heffner at this year’s EASTERN NAT’L at Harrisburg. He said it was a real challenge to get the cows balanced on the plane. Ron is pictured above second to the left. It was a media bonanza when the cows arrived at MADISON. It put WORLD DAIRY EXPO on the map as the place to be the 1st week of October. My only regret was that my wife was home milking the cows while I was enjoying the greatest show on earth.
