EDITORIAL

LAMBDA PARIS -

A Happy Hi to the Readers

MODERN DAY TRIPLE-THREAT

Lambda Paris is a special member of our genetic strategy. Her ability to transmit both “G” and “T” is what makes her so special to us. Watch for exciting sons this spring sired by Hanans & Rozline at Select Sires as well as Twitch sons at Semex this winter.

This is a special moment. A special moment to write our first editorial for a magazine we’ve appreciated for a long time. When talks with Tom and Sandy Morris learned us that we possibly could continue their magazine when they were ready to sell it, we were very proud. Because for us it is an honor to carry on a magazine that is so well known across the world. In 2021 that moment came along and from September 1 we got the privilege to publish the Cattle Connection. We can only humbly say: thank you Tom and Sandy Morris for a special opportunity. We will do our utmost to keep the reputation of this magazine as it has been for so many years.

Her current sons available include:

...The lack of the 24/7 media blitz concerning: The Afghanistan mess, border crisis, inflation, high gas prices, labor shortage, the longest U.S. ally calling its ambassador home, climate change, and covid, simply overwhelming our unprepared leader in the White House.

GAME CHANGER

Immu-Pro improves your herd or it’s free. Call for details* On a dairy farm, everything you do should lead to additional profits for you. Delvern Martin of Ringgold Farms is a good example of today’s savvy young business dairy farmer. He works hard, loves his family, loves dairy farming, serves and contributes to the local economy and always strives to make things more profitable. Delvern relates using Immu-Pro and Stay Strong together. “We have had good components. 4.2F, 3.42P, SCC 78. This is our best protein % ever. I was just thinking before we got on these feed products, we were not really making any progress. In fact, we seriously thought about selling our herd. I love dairy farming and working with our family employees. We got on the products because we saw our friend Jonas Martin had near 50 SCC on Immu-Pro. Feeding Immu-Pro daily makes milking cows so much more enjoyable.” Immu-Pro fed every AM can help your herd be its best ever.

Most, but not all, have really good crops. This will greatly help your milk profit margin. As you of course know, your largest expense on the farm is feed. A number of our customers grow soybeans and have them roasted on the farm. Maybe you should, too. Balage is popular with many. It’s not too early to plan for next year’s crops. Be a game changer like Delvern Martin at Ringgold Farms and get the Immu-Pro your cows want and need to do their best. All lives and preborn lives matter.

SIZE MODERATOR

APPLE Challenger-Red is a Burkett-Falls Done Right son of the legendary “Apple”. ‘This cow has cemented her place in the hearts and minds of breeders around the globe as one of the greatest show and brood cows in the history of the Holstein breed,’ comments Jared Martin from Triple-Hil. ‘If you study her pedigree, it is apparent that Apple wasn’t a genetic fluke but rather the culmination of decades of astute breeding. Our vision with this mating was to produce offApple-Pts Challenger-Red (Triple-Hil): spring from Apple that would compliment her Done Right-Regiment-Durham physique while maintaining everything we love about her. Challenger-Red is very correct with his mother’s capacity and wonderful rib, and also with some slope from hips to pins.’ Challenger-Red is currently available only in the US in conventional semen, though there are plans to get him qualified for export and to produce sexed semen. ‘We believe Challenger-Red can channel Apple’s breeding power while adding to the longevity and good components that already excel in this maternal line,’ adds Martin.

Dinomi Risque (St. Jacobs):

Risque combines two of the all-time greats Ronald-Undenied-Monterey – Queen of the breed Roxy with one of her strongest contenders for that title, Raven. His sire Ronald is a Salvatore-Silver-Uno then Super Roxy and 9 more generations of EX Roxy’s. The dam of Risque is an 87 2-year-old Undenied (former Nr.1 PTAT cow) then an 86 Monterey and EX Doorman followed by 8 more generations of VG and EX back through Raven EX-95. ‘I love Risque’s linear; tall, strong, deep and open along with great udders and correct feet and legs,’ comments Brian Behnke. ‘Also there is no crazy high pins, straight legs or crazy short teats. He should be a great cross on King Doc blood.’ Risque is moderate for production (398 milk +.01% fat -.02% protein) and health but dazzles for type with 3.46 PTAT including 4.58 fore-udders, 4.36 high rear-udders and 4.21 shallow udder depth! Semen is not available in Canada or Europe but is freely available elsewhere in sexed and conventional.

Peak Curveball (CRV):

‘Curveball is a size moderator with elite producFastball-AltaTopshot-Delta tion and nice udders,’ explains Jacob Richardson from CRV. ‘He has some slope to the rump and is only slightly posty on legs: A very balanced bull.’ Curveball hails from the Pizza family that has been so successful in the Bomaz herd in Wisconsin. At 2975 gTPI and 1052 NM, he ranks among the leading young bulls currently available. ‘We ramped up production ahead of the proof run so at this time he is widely available for both conventional and sorted units,’ Richardson continues. ‘We have a lot of international interest but we will focus on maintaining a strong supply here in the US.’ His proof shows 1647 milk with +.11% fat +.04% protein. He is also A2A2 and +6.0 PL, and scores quite well for livability and mastitis resistance. Protect for very short teats (-1.3) and narrow thurl width (-.83).

SIRE OF SONS Ahead is one of Renegade’s best sons. He was used as a sire father and Select Sires already has 16 sons entering their young sire program. Ahead was bred at Blumenfeld Holsteins, a 700-cow robot dairy in northern Minnesota. His dam is a wide, powerful Frazzled daughter backed by Myles-Yoder-Supersire. The pedigree then runs through Trigger-Sharky-Lancelot-BW Marshall-Rudolph in the Sure-View Jubilant Ava Blumenfeld Renegade Ahead (Genervations): family. ‘Ahead is a component improvement Renegade-Frazzled-Myles specialist (+.32% fat and +.12% protein) but is moderate on milk so I would use him on cows with more will to milk,’ comments Kevin Jorgensen. ‘He also excels for fitness, especially SCS, DPR and PL. He has a very modern linear profile improving all udder traits.’ Ahead has a gTPI of 2925 with 251lb milk and 0.91 PTAT, and could be protected for straight legs (-1.10) and short teats (-.70). He began his career in the NxGen program but is now widely available in sexed and conventional semen and qualifies for all markets.

Zurich is a balanced sire with 2931 gTPI, 1424 milk +.14% fat +.08% protein combined with moderate stature, solid udder breakdown and sloped rump angle that should result in long-lasting, profitable cows. The Marius son is out of Morningview Duke Zip who was purchased by Claynook Farms as a calf in 2017 and has developed into a highly productive cow producing Claynook Zurich (Semex): over 15,000kg/33,069lb at 5.3% fat and 3.7% Marius-Duke-Yoder protein on first lactation. She is out of an EX Yoder x EX Uno x VG Super tracing to the famous Windsor-Manor Rud Zip EX-95. ‘As a sire with a rating of +270 Feed Efficiency, Zurich should bring high level profitability to his progeny,’ comments Mike West from Semex. ‘He could be used to advantage over cows with a little more curve to the hock and more refined bone quality.’ Zurich is 1.17 PTAT with 1.53 udders, and is available globally in both conventional and sexed semen.

“Comfort matters... start clean... stay clean.” — Mitch Breunig

“Comfort matters. For 10 years, we have been using Udder Comfort™ because it gets fresh cows off to a great start. Cows that start clean tend to stay clean throughout the lactation. So, we spray every fresh udder 2x/day for 3 to 7 days after calving and see their SCCs come down much faster,” says Mitch Breunig, Mystic Valley Dairy, Sauk City, Wisconsin, home to Jenny-Lou Holsteins, founded by his parents Jeanette and Louis. From balanced breeding and a focus on longevity came the legacy of Toystory. A goal today is high component, low SCC milk, shipping at least 7.5 lbs combined fat and protein. The 450-cow freestall herd averages over 110 lbs/cow/day with RHA over 1300 of fat, over 1000 of protein and records to 55,000 with more than 60 past 150,000M lifetime.

Karuba: She’s The Cow of Tomorrow, Today!

Stop by the David Koss show string in Madison to look at Karuba. And look for her dam, Karmina, on Tuesday during the show. Contact us with your interest in embryos from Karuba.

Think of those beautiful, fashionable F1 calves that can be directly entered in the Red and White Herd Book with a $10 Certificate of Identification (CID) from the Holstein Association. They can then be entered in many of the Red and White Open Shows in several states And they’ll also be eligible for most Junior Dairy Shows throughout the United States.

Consider for your herd a round of embryos from Karuba by Altitude, Unstoppable, Jordy, Warrior, or Diamondback! Think of the benefit in hybrid vigor for health and reproduction.

She is due next spring at 2-2 and can deliver to your breeding and show program the combination of type and production needed for a profitable, sustainable dairy genetic program for the ages.

Karuba is a daughter of one of the best cows in North America today, regardless of breed. Her dam, Marilie Gentleman Karmina, is an “Excellent-94” three time All-American in milking form with 1344F, a registered Ayrshire that milks like a Holstein. Her sire is the time-honored Palmyra Tri-Star Burdette, a plus proven, leading sire of All-Americans for many years.

Regardless of your breed of choice, or your country of origin, Karuba is one to look at while you’re at World Dairy Expo. She was first place Winter Yearling and Jr. Champion at the Iowa State Fair, and first at the Minnesota State Fair.

Stop and see Smashing-Red in the Tyler Endres exhibit at Expo.

She’s by Jordy from an “Excellent” Res. Jr. All-American Milking Yearling dam with 1207F. Her second dam is “VG-88” with 1380F and 1101P. The next three dams are all “Very Good” and “Excellent” with records to 1349 lbs. of butterfat. Think of what a round of embryos from Smashing and one of the good Red and White sires can do for your breeding or show ring program, here or internationally! Our plan is to not breed her until June of 2022, so both IVF and conventional flushing are opportunities for you!

Smashing-Red won the Fall Yearling Class at the 2021 Midwest National Spring Red and White Show, Iowa Holstein Show, Wisconsin Championship Red and White Show, the Iowa State Fair and the Iowa Delco Show. She freshened at 1-11 and is entered at Madison as a Fall Yearling in Milk.

Kiko Holsteins: Ohio Herd Increasingly Attracting Attention The name Kiko is well known in eastern Ohio – partly due to the show-ring success of their Holsteins at regional and state shows over the past 7-8 years, but also due to the family’s sales

T and auctioneering business that has celebrated its 75th anniversary and

conducts over 1,000 auctions per year. Text: Doug Savage Photos: Han Hopman

T

he 6-year-old Kiko Aftershock Jackie 1125 classified EX-94 earlier in the year and was recently flushed to Stantons Chief producing 6 embryos. Another cow that was flushed, this time to Delta-Lambda, was an outstanding young Doorman that traces back through an 88-point Windbrook to the EX-95 Scientific Gold Dana Rae and then Debutante Rae. The Kiko’s usually do 3-4 embryo flushes per year, either conventional or IVF depending on the stage of the donors. ‘We are keen type breeders here. With bulls like Chief and Lambda you get a shot at producing a show winner but you also add a name to a pedigree that will still be viewed positively in 10 years time. If you look at the pedigree of the Doorman she is backed by Windbrook, Goldwyn and Durham, highly regarded iconic sires, so I want to try and build on that,’ explains Rudy Kiko. His brother Russell manages the farm while Rudy is in charge of the breeding program. Rudy helps with chores in the morning before heading off to join the family’s auctioneering business for the remainder of the day. ‘Even if we don’t get show animals from Chief and Lambda we should still get really nice cows that know how to milk. With some of the type specialists you don’t always get a lot of milk as 2-yearolds. And a lot of the extreme type specialists seem to be low for DPR so that’s the one trait we watch carefully when picking sires. We also find that a lot of the really high demand bulls tend to have low fertility semen.’

AUCTIONS It was in 1945 that Russell Kiko (Senior) established an auction business that has now celebrated its 75th anniversary. ‘My grandfather had a family of 13 children, including 10 boys, and most ended up working in the auction business,’ explains Rudy. ‘He also had the farm, and in fact in the ‘60s it was one of the biggest dairy herds in the region, milking 75 cows, and he had the first barn in this area to put in a milk pipeline.’ The auction business now operates in an area of eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and West Virginia and handles much more than farm auctions… real estate, homes, livestock, equipment, antiques, cars…the list goes on. ‘I have 60 first cousins and around 30 of those work in the Kiko auction business,’ explains Rudy. ‘And even with other families, we now have 2nd and 3rd generation family members who have worked with us so this really is very much a family atmosphere. We hold over 1,000 auctions per year. Of recent years we do much more on-line but the best results come from a live auction with online simulcast. I think some people are a little discouraged with the prices that average dairy cattle bring now in general but for a herd dispersal the auction is still the best. To sell privately and let buyers pick what they want, you often

get left with more than half that have to be culled. The live auction still creates excitement and the simulcast makes it accessible to a much larger group of potential buyers.’

PRODUCTION While the Kiko’s have a passion for breeding high-type animals they have certainly not forgotten that milk pays the bills. The Kiko herd of 250 milking cows averages just on 32,000lb/14,500kg on 3x milking. While Russell manages the farm his brothers Rudy, Randall and Ryan all live close by and are involved part-time in farm operations. ‘I am one of 8 in our family and we all started out showing calves at local fairs,’ explains Rudy. ‘I guess it was 7-8 years ago that I took it to the next level and we started going to some of the larger fairs and state shows. My niece, Elizabeth, is also very keen on the shows while the other kids are younger and are still involved in 4H but they like to show calves too.’ The Kiko’s have not purchased many animals but prefer to show products of their own breeding program. ‘We’ve accumulated a few prominent cow families over time but we like to work with what we have. In fact one of our best cow families goes back a few generations to a grade-up cow that we registered. I know a lot of old-time breeders were upset with that program and I understand why but this family really is a great transmitting cow family. Our father bought a lot of commercial cows over the years and this one in particular has really bred on consistently.’

JEWEL One significant purchase was Springhill-OH PS Jewel, a Shottle daughter that went on to score EX-93 and has added a number of prominent daughters to the herd sired by such bulls as Dempsey and Supersire. The Shottle traces back through Ocean-View Durham Jewel and Ocean-View Rudolph Jewel to a daughter of the prominent bull-

Back row, 4 of Russell & Jodie’s 5 children: Wayne, Elizabeth, Elena and Wayden, with herdsman Luke (with cap) in the middle. mother Langacres Cleitus Jewel. The Lang family at the renowned Ohio herd Springhill had developed this line over many generations descending from Langacres Elevation Hope. At Kiko this has become one of the prominent lines in the herd. ‘We do use quite a number of young sires but we also like to go back and use well established proven bulls too,’ explains Rudy. ‘We used Sidekick and Unix as young sires and quite like what we got, and we’ve also gone back to use Diamondback again too.’ A VG-88 2-year-old Diamondback stood fifth in her class at Circleville last fall. In the absence of the World Dairy Expo last year, a major show was held in Circleville with many of the leading showherds from across the US in attendance so she certainly had big-time competition. This cow is Kiko Diamondback Mitzi, who is now fresh again. Her mother is one of Kiko’s top show cows over recent years, Kiko Gold Chip Maddie EX-91.

PASSION The herd is housed in a free-stall barn, but there is a very large box-stall where 4-6 show

We also pick out a few show calves and they are in a pack barn and can go outside for exercise. They are fed a higher protein grain ration and lots of dry hay,’ explains Rudy. The Kiko’s farm 2,500 acres (1,000ha) so in addition to growing all the forage and grain needed for the dairy herd they also grow grain cash-crops as well. Holstein breeding is a shared passion for the extended Kiko family and they very much enjoy the spirit of competition and the people they meet through their involvement at shows. l
