The POWER of HANKER

After a full year of silence, it happened again: in Madison’s Coliseum, a Supreme Champion was chosen! But… have you noticed how special this new Expo winner is? She has become the best of both worlds, as her pedigree clearly shows. As her sire, you find GS Alliance O’Kaliber, the son of a double World Champion and true show-star: Decrausaz Iron O’Kalibra. Rightfully she became World Champion (in HI’s annual competition, held since 1997) and people worldwide always wondered how this Swiss superstar would have acted if she could have come to North America… Let’s now turn to Shakira’s maternal line, where we find KHW Regiment Apple-Red as Shakira’s granddam. This Apple also is a double World Champion! In HI’s Red-Holstein World Championship, held since 2004. This means that Shakira has the honor of being a grandchild to two two-fold World Champions, O’Kalibra and Apple! Be assured: the number of these two-fold Champions is very limited: for B&W only 3 (O’Kalibra, Hailey, Rose) and for R&W only 4 (Apple, Irene, Seisme, Redrose). Now imagine that Shakira has two of these legends in her pedigree, both as granddams… This is the power of genetics. Now imagine you can compose Shakira in future pedigrees! The chance is here, we can unveil her son’s name: Showtime-RC. Yes, red-factor, options for both colors!

Once Again...

The B1G 10 has 5 in the top 11 in this week’s NCAA football polls. After the Iowa Hawkeyes joined the Wisconsin Badgers as the most overrated teams in America, how long will it be before the rest of them fall like the autumn leaves?

Bayland Crescent Charmane was GRAND CHAMPION for Clarence Bay of Oklahoma. Legandary showman and one of the founders of Expo, Allen Hetts, was at the halter for this 2 Yr Old at the first show in 1967. In 1969, the first year showing in the Coliseum, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Aged Cows were all very black Osborndale Ivanhoe daughters. GRAND CHAMPION was Miss Ivanhoe Scranton, the first 6E cow of the breed. Our Ivanhoe, State Hill Ivanhoe Delia, was the second 6E cow of the breed. In 1968, Porter Waggoner & Dolly Parton drove their tour bus into the Coliseum and put on a concert. So many great EXPO memories! We have sponsored Holstein USA’s 40-YEAR NATIONAL MEMBER award for many years.

walk through the tie-stall barn at Conant-Acres is sure to impress any connoisseur of great cows…the occupants of no less than 20 of the 75 stalls are classified EX-94: And there is even one at EX-95, their first home-bred 95-point cow Conant-Acres Topside Cybil. The Conants have developed other purchased cows to the 95-point score previously but being homebred makes this one more special. The 8-year-old Cybil has show wins to her credit, including a Supreme Champion ribbon, and she continues to be a solid performer in the barn. Sired by Gen-I-Beq Topside, the Bolton brother to Goldwyn, Cybil is out of a 94-point Sanchez and then a 94-point Durham from family foundation cow Belcrawf Allen Cecilia EX-93. Cybil is also a strong transmitter with her only classified daughter being a 94-point Brady, while she has younger heifers by Tatoo and Denver.

FAMILY

Conant-Acres is a family operated farm located on rich valley soil near Canton in west-central Maine. The herd originally consisted of grade Holsteins, Shorthorns and Jerseys when Duane Conant returned to the home farm in 1970 after managing his brother’s herd. He brought with him a passion for quality Holsteins and soon established the path to today’s outstanding herd. Today, Conant-Acres is owned by Duane, his daughter Debbie and son-in-law Steve Keene. Steve and Debbie’s daughter Natalie works for World Wide Sires and is married to Matt Sneller who is a driving force in managing the herd today. Natalie’s sister-in-law, Sarah Keene, is also involved in the day-to-day running of the farm.

BREEDING PHILOSOPHY Over 60% of the cows – that is all cows on second lactation or higher – have classified EX. ‘We now focus more on udder compos-

Duane Conant: It is now 50 years ago that he brought the first registered Holsteins to Conant-Acres.

ite in our bull selection rather than the PTAT,’ comments Matt Sneller. ‘After a lot of years of high type selection we found there were some problems creeping in. We actually select against extreme stature now. Our stalls are not getting any bigger and the extreme stature cows tend to be more awkward and

less mobile. We also found with the high type focus that we had some fertility challenges so we now avoid the lowest DPR bulls too. Bulls like Hanley and Mystic Crush are lower on stature but give you quality animals without the frame size of some.’ Bulls like Levitate, who is backed by a great cow family and sires a lot of milk but shorter stature, are now getting greater attention. ‘We still make some matings with the show ring in mind – using bulls like Sidekick, Denver and Admiral – but our main focus is on balanced, functional type with good production rather than the extreme type specialists.’ While the Conant family likes to exhibit their Holsteins at local fairs and the state show it is not a major part of the farm operations. ‘If we bred a cow good enough to compete at the major national shows then we would likely partner with someone who specializes in that aspect of the business, to ensure that they are exhibited at the highest level,’ comments Sneller.

SUBSTANCE High Octane was a bull that worked well at Conant-Acres. ‘He was a great bull for us, with all his daughters scoring 88 or higher, and the majority producing 30,000 pounds of milk as first calvers,’ comments Sneller. Most of our 2-year-olds are Docs and Tatoo’s. The Doc’s have more substance, with nice volume frames and are very consistent. Some are now calving for a second time, but as 2-year-olds

Conant-Acres Aftershock Trina is just one of a long procession of 94-point cows to pass through the Conant-Acres barn. Trina’s 5 classified daughters include a 94 Guthrie, 92 Atwood and a 90 Alexander.

there were 2 or 3 at 89 and a lot of them were 87 or 88. The Tatoo’s are more variable in the leg, though he can make more of the flashy kind too with beautiful, quality udders.’

BEEF For many years the Sweet family was dominant in the herd. The bull Conant-Acres Broker was perhaps the best-known icon from the Sweet family, producing show winners around the world. However, time has moved on, and today the dominant family stems from Arethusa Outside Leslie EX-92, the dam of the Goldwyn show cow R-E-W Happy Go Lucky. Indeed, Leslie has produced 13 EX daughters, including a 94-point Goldwyn, two 94-point Atwoods and a 94 Gold Chip. Of course the embryo export market is no longer as brisk as it was in the past. ‘We’ve certainly had to adapt to the current market reality and most of the ET flush work we do now is for our own herd improvement purposes or to produce a few show calves,’ comments Sneller. ‘We do use sexed semen for first service on our 2-year-olds. We market a few animals through consignment sales, including a couple Tatoo daughters that sold quite well through the Juniper sale earlier in the summer. We also continue to market fresh 2-year-olds, and have shifted towards utilizing more beef semen strategically in the breeding program as well.’ The family are developing a small beef herd to supply their growing farm market.

FARM MARKET After selling sweet corn from a small roadside stand for more than 40 years, the Conant family established an on-farm market two years ago, primarily as a direct outlet for the sale of raw milk, which is permitted in Maine. From there, the store has branched out to cover a wide range of farm produce and has developed into a significant farm venture. New walk-in coolers and a freezer have been recently installed to add to the store facilities. ‘In addition to the whole milk we also offer a range of six specialty cheddars, including maple, and ale and beer-washed varieties. We’ve also partnered with other farms to ensure continuity of supply of seasonal farm produce for our customers,’ adds Sneller. In addition to the beef and dairy products, other produce includes fruit and vegetables, Maine maple products, ice cream and baked goods. There is a lot more than elite Holsteins on display at Conant-Acres. l

HOMOZYGOUS POLLED At 2843 gTPI, Remover is the Nr.1 homozygous polled bull available without restrictions. Semen is currently available in Canada, the US and Stantons Remover-PP (Stantons): Australia in convenLuster P-Bighit P-Jedi tional and soon also in sexed semen. Sired by Luster-P (Zipit-Kingboy), Remover is a high production bull (+1584lb milk +.11%f +.03%p) with solid type at +1.90 gPTAT with +1.56 udders. ‘We started with this family with the purchase of his 4th dam, Sonray-Acres Soc Observer Vi, who became EX-91 and was one of the best Observer daughters,’ explains Jim Stanton. ‘Her Mardi Gras produced Stantons Valentine VG-87, one of the very highest gTPI Jedi heifers. We added polled by using Bighit who produced the dam of Remover. She made a big 2-year-old record and was flushed extensively.’ Apart from adding polled to every mating, Remover will add length to teats. ‘He should be protected on rump as the family does tend to raise pins a little,’ adds Stanton.

3rd Spring Calf Int’l Holstein Show 2021 Warrior x EX96 Monique! She SELLS! 1st choice full sister also sells.

Peak Eastwood (Jetstream): AltaHotjob-Denver-Balisto

SMALL AND PROFITABLE Exotic comes from a developing cow family at Oakfield Corners that traces back to a cow family at Kings-Ransom. ‘Exotic’s dam OCD Burley Early 44336 VG-85 is a true modern dairy cow: Moderate size, really good mammary and is very mobile,’ comments Rick VerBeek. ‘She is about to finish her second lactation and is due for the third time in November after calving last December.’ Exotic’s breeding pattern mirrors his dam and pedigree. His proof shows outstanding values for all wellness

‘Eastwood fits exactly into our breeding program and satisfies many of our clients due to his +2.11 gPTAT, A2A2, +1135lb milk, +2880 gTPI, and low calving problems at +2.1% SCE,’ comments Roger Turner from Jetstream. ‘We have had strong demand for his semen and he has sold heavily in China, Turkey, USA, Australia and throughout Europe. Being moderate in stature with strong feet & legs along with super udder figures, he continues his strong sales.’ Sired by AltaHotjob (Hotline-Josuper), Eastwood is out of a daughter of Mr Mogul Denver that traces through Balisto and Epic to Mor-Yet Goldwyn 682 EX-93. ‘His sire stack and his cow family background also fit our program very well, with many EX scored cows in a deep pedigree,’ adds Turner. Eastwood is a good component bull (+.11%f +.07%p) with a very complete profile with just short teats (-1.16) requiring attention. He is readily available in conventional and sexed 4M semen.

Research at the University of Puerto Rico is showing an advantage of 1500 pounds of milk per year and breeding back 30 days quicker for dairy cattle that have the SLICK GENE versus the normal longhaired gene. This is especially important for cattle that graze in the sun and live in tropical conditions. Breeding cattle specific to the environment is here with the slick gene introduction.
