It is the basic force of the breed. It is also the reason why the Holstein breed has become the world’s biggest breed. Production! Milk! That’s what Holsteins are really, really good at. The dam of Genesis, Triple-Rose Glory-Red, was a Ladd-P-Red that sadly died after her 2nd calving. ‘She was admired for her wonderfully balanced conformation, beautiful mammary system and extreme components,’ comments Jared Martin. The pedigree then traces through an EX Absolute-93 Goldwyn-91 Shottle-93 Pronto to Castleholm Dundee Rhapsody. ‘So many great breeding establishments played a role, including Rusty Herr who developed this branch of the Royal Rosa’s. Genesis exhibits a long, clean, dairy neck combined with plenty of rib and straight top-line. Being polled, red-carrier and A2A2 are additional bonuses,’ adds Martin.

The super type bull Fitters Choice (+4.37 PTAT) is sired by the popular daughter-proven sire Crushabull (Crush-Mogul) who is renowned for siring great mammary systems. The dam of Fitters Choice is a King Doc that died before being classified, while the 2nd dam is a VG Monterey followed by Mogul Hanker and MOM Halo, both winners of Holstein International’s Global Cow title. Palmyra: Elite Breeder Herd with a Number of Different Breeds The winner of the National Dairy Shrine’s Distinguished Breeder Award 2019 was Palmyra, from Hagerstown, Maryland. Over the years Palmyra has bred more than 50 All-American winners and has sent 81 Ayrshire

ettysburg, Pennsylvania, was the site of the battle that marked the turning point of the American Civil War, and remains a destination for history buffs to this day. Just a few minutes away across the state line into Maryland is Palmyra, home of the Shank and Creek families. William Shank purchased this property in 1942 and today it is owned by Ralph Shank and his wife Terrie along with his sister Mary Creek and her husband Mike, who along with their families manage this high caliber herd as well as an on-farm cheese making business. ‘Some years ago we developed a unique arrangement to rent out our 300 acres of crop land to a custom operator, who is then contracted to supply us with the forages we need, mostly corn silage,’ explains Mary Creek. ‘That enables us to focus on our cow management along with the cheese business.’ The cheese making venture was established 12 years ago and has pro-

gressively grown over the years, producing cheddar cheese in a variety of flavors. Cheese is marketed direct to consumers, wholesale to small grocery stores and restaurants, or supplied to distributors for resale. Most of the cheese is aged for at least 9 months before being offered to consumers. ‘Our most popular flavor for direct sales is Chesapeake Bay, using an old recipe for Chesapeake Bay seasoning for crabs and seafood,’ comments Mary. ‘For our wholesale cheese the most popular are our basic or smoked flavors.’

BOARDING

The milking herd of 100 cows is housed in a free-stall operation and milked through a herringbone parlor. The cows are fed a TMR ration and the calves are fed a concentrated ration three times a day. Heifers are pastured in the summer and fed TMR as needed. Palmyra has a mixed herd with outstanding

Mary Creek: ‘We’ve always used a lot of young bulls in our breeding program’

individuals from a number of breeds. ‘The core of the herd is Ayrshire,’ points out Creek, ‘though our son Evan has about 10 Holsteins, and then 3-4 years ago we started boarding cows and now have 40 head of various breeds from 12 clients boarded here too. Many of the outside clients like to go to regional shows but we also prepare some for national shows too, and then there is also some high genetic-merit animals so we handle all the details for the embryo flush work for those as well.’ Evan Creek has been a professional cattle fitter and has been involved in organizing sales but since the arrival of Covid now spends most of his time at Palmyra. One of the first Holsteins purchased was Oakfield Gold Chip Dare, who was nominated All-American and has several daughters. Evan and his partner Sarah recently sold the exciting young cow Ms Campbell-Run Hez Kora VG-88 2-yrs, who was Reserve Grand at the Western PA Championship show and recently 2nd Senior-3 at the New York Spring Carousel. The Hezekiah daughter is out of a Shotbolt and then the 96-point TC Sanchez Kristina and has left a number of impressive younger sisters behind. Evan’s brother Michael is the operations manager at Trans-Ova and last fall judged at the World Dairy Expo.

RUTH At its core, the Palmyra herd has always been strongest in the Ayrshire breed. Among the many successful bulls produced is Palmyra Tristar Burdette, who for 6 years in a row was Premier Sire at the World Dairy Expo. Burdette comes from the Bonnie family that has been prominent at Palmyra now for 43 years. He has been a major force in the breed worldwide siring national champions in 7 different countries! In Madison last fall he was beaten for the Premier Sire banner by Palmyra Berkley Reagan. ‘The nice thing is the two bulls are unrelated so we can use Reagan over the Burdette’s,’ explains Mary. Over the years, Palmyra has had no fewer than 10 cows that

have been Nr.1 on the Ayrshire index list. The most recent of those was Palmyra Berkley P Ruth EX-94, a full sister to Reagan who at the time that she was the Nr.1 genetic merit cow was also the reigning World Dairy Expo Grand Champion! Indeed, Ruth was national Champion in both 2017 and 2018. ‘They come from the Rosy family that has been in the herd now for more than 30 years,’ remarks Creek. Ruth is a 4th generation EX tracing back to Covey-Farms Reno Rosy EX-91. Three sons of Ruth are in AI. The Power son Palmyra Remsberg is at St Jacobs and his first few calves are now appearing in the show-ring. Palmyra Rushmore at ST and Palmyra Reynolds at Select Sires have calves now being born. A daughter of Ruth, Palmyra Predator Ruthless EX-92, was Reserve Grand at Expo in 2021 for her new owners Kurt Wolf and John Cannon from Iowa. Palmyra Lochinvar Ribbon is one of three Ruth daughters still at Palmyra, and last year she won the milking yearling class at Harrisburg and was HM All-American. So far four of Ruth’s daughters have scored EX. A third family that has sent many bulls to AI is the Ginger family, one of the foundation lines that has been bred at Palmyra for over 80 years. The Grand Champion from Harrisburg last year, Palmyra Reagan Gigi, is from this line.

YOUNG SIRES ‘We’ve always focused a lot on using young bulls in our breeding program,’ explains Creek. ‘Our primary emphasis is on production, and we look for positive type bulls and then use corrective matings. We are also very careful to avoid any of the haplotypes or genetic recessives.’ Of course selecting bulls from reliable cow families improves the chances of getting a superior transmitter. ‘We do watch the health traits but only to the point of avoiding some of the very worst individuals. These low heritability traits are influenced more by management than genetics, and we don’t want to dilute our selection goals by focusing on the health traits. We really try to focus on improving production and maintaining type.’ Over the last 25 years or so the genetic options available to Ayrshire breeders have expanded with the availability of Scandinavian bloodlines. ‘We try to maintain our Ayshires as pure as we can, and at least stay above the 90% level. We just find we can get a more uniform package and a more predictable result that way,’ comments Mary. At Palmyra they do flush a number of animals each year, and have found that the embryo market has been gaining a little momentum again recently. ‘We also use a little sexed semen but would use more if it was available on all the bulls we are interested in,’ adds Mary. ‘Unfortunately Ayshire bulls don’t often get priority when it comes to the production of sexed semen.’ l
