E

n 1960, il y avait à peine quatre ou cinq auteurs arabes contemporains traduits en français: on pouvait trouver en librairie Le Livre des jours de Taha Hussein, le Journal d’un substitut de campagne de Tawfiq al-Hakim, quelques pièces de théâtre de Tawfiq al-Hakim, deux ou trois recueils de Mahmoud Teymour, et cela dans une maison d’édition peu connue, Les Nouvelles Editions latines, et puis c’est tout.

De cette pauvreté, il y a deux raisons. La première est politique. C’est le contentieux très sérieux qui opposait la France au monde arabe dans les années quarante et, surtout, dans les années cinquante. Après Suez, la plupart des pays arabes, sauf le Liban, ont rompu avec la France. Mais déjà la querelle autour des indépendances de la Syrie et du Liban, le soutien français au sionisme conquérant, la lutte en Tunisie et au Maroc, le début de la

guerre d’Algérie, avaient sérieusement affecté les rapports franco-arabes. Et cela, sans doute, a grandement contribué à la raréfaction de la traduction littéraire de l’arabe en français.

Il y a aussi une autre raison, plutôt technique, de cette pauvreté éditoriale: c’est que l’orientalisme français luimême ne s’intéressait pas –ou très peu– à la littérature arabe contemporaine. La France pouvait s’enorgueillir de ses grands orientalistes, spécialistes de littérature classique, mais personne ne suivait de près l’évolution de la littérature contemporaine, sauf, peut-être, la littérature populaire, la littérature en dialectal, aussi bien en Afrique du Nord qu’au Proche-Orient. Mais je ne connais pas de véritables spécialistes de littérature contemporaine, à partir de la Première Guerre mondiale, et surtout après 1945.

l’indépendance de l’Algérie, en 1962.

Pour la première fois, on a publié la traduction d’un ouvrage de littérature arabe vraiment contemporaine, celui d’une jeune femme libanaise, Layla Baalbaki (Je vis, aux Editions Julliard). Entre Teymour et Layla Baalbaki, on a donc occulté Mahfouz, Idris et beaucoup d’autres. Mais cette traduction a eu un grand mérite: celui de montrer aux lecteurs français, aux spécialistes français, qu’il y a une jeune littérature arabe, et que cette littérature est articulée aux différents courants de la littérature mondiale.

On pourrait parler aussi de certaines traductions dans la revue Orient que publiait le Quai d’Orsay depuis 1957 et qui a contribué, grâce notamment à Michel Barbot, à faire connaître la production littéraire la plus récente.

Un autre moment important a été l’anthologie en trois volumes publiée par Le Seuil de 1965 à 1967. A la parution de cette anthologie, certains textes étaient déjà dépassés, notamment pour la poésie et la nouvelle. Mais cela était assez révélateur, et je crois que beaucoup de Français ont entendu pour la première fois parler de Sayyâb ou d’Adonis grâce à cette anthologie.

Mais le moment le plus important a été le lancement par Pierre Bernard, en 1970, d’une bibliothèque arabe chez un petit éditeur parisien, Jérôme Martineau, puis les Editions Sindbad, en 1972. Chez Jérôme Martineau, Pierre Bernard a publié deux livres qui ont eu un grand succès: le premier, un ro-

man de Mahfouz, Passage des miracles (Zuqâq al-Midaqq); le deuxième, Construire avec le peuple de Hassan Fathi. Il a repris ces deux livres plus tard, chez Sindbad, et, depuis, il faut dire qu’il a fait un travail de très grande qualité. Les conditions politiques lui étaient à l’époque favorables. D’abord parce qu’il s’est inscrit tout naturellement dans ce qu’on appelait «La politique arabe de la France». Ensuite, parce qu’il a eu un lien privilégié avec un pays arabe en pleine expansion, à savoir l’Algérie. Cela, quoi qu’on dise aujourd’hui, a eu un effet bénéfique puisqu’il a permis à Sindbad d’exister.

Et c’est grâce à Sindbad que, dans les années soixante-dix, des auteurs comme Tayeb Salih et Youssef Idriss ont été traduits ; que, dans les années quatre-vingt, Adonis, Sayyâb, Bayâtî, Sonallah Ibrahim et bien d’autres ont fait leur entrée dans les librairies françaises. Qui plus est, ces livres étaient généralement bien traduits, le choix des auteurs était judicieux, et la présentation était d’une grande élégance. On avait là, en effet, des livres parmi les plus soignés de toute l’édition française, ce qui a amélioré le statut de la littérature arabe en France.

Parallèlement à ce travail pionnier de Pierre Bernard, un certain nombre de maisons d’édition ont commencé dans les années quatre-vingt à s’intéresser à la littérature arabe. Je pense d’abord aux Editions de Minuit qui y sont arrivées par le biais de leur soutien à la cause palestinienne, en publiant des poèmes de Mahmoud Dar-

m’étendre un peu parce que je suis directement concerné.

Actes Sud a commencé par publier dans ses collections générales deux livres de littérature arabe contemporaine: l’un de Nabil Naoum, en 1988, l’autre de Rachid El-Daif, en 1992. A partir de cette dernière date, une expérience fort importante va être menée par Yves Gonzalez-Quijano, avec la fondation de la collection «Mondes arabes». Pour la première fois, la responsabilité éditoriale revenait à un directeur de collection ayant une idée précise de la littérature arabe, ayant des préférences –qu’on soit d’accord ou non avec ses choix– et s’inscrivant dans une stratégie à moyen terme. Pour la première fois aussi, un jeune arabisant français avait accès aux responsabilités dans le domaine de l’édition. Il y a deux jours, j’ai entendu quelqu’un dans la salle dire du mal des jeunes arabisants européens. Je crois, au contraire, que ce qu’ils font est absolument remarquable et qu’il y a une avancée par rapport à la génération précédente sur un point fondamental: c’est la proximité –à la fois intellectuelle et affective– avec le monde arabe. Il n’y a pas longtemps, les grands arabisants, à quelques exceptions près, occultaient tout ce qui n’était pas officiel, autorisé, reconnu. Les jeunes sont plus en phase avec les nouveaux mouvements littéraires et plus sensibles aux aspirations démocratiques des intellectuels.

wich, une anthologie par Laâbi parue en 1983. Zayni Barakat, de Gamal Ghitany, a paru aux éditions du Seuil en 1985, et, la même année, a débuté une autre expérience importante, celle de l’Institut du monde arabe en collaboration avec les Editions Lattès.

C’est dans cette collection qu’on a édité Fouad al-Takarli, Hanan ElCheikh, Youssef al-Qaid, al-Ujayli, et, surtout, la trilogie de Mahfouz. Mais c’était une collection très fortement subventionnée ; et, comme toujours, quand l’éditeur ne prend pas de risques, il ne fait pas beaucoup d’efforts pour toucher le lectorat. Les traductions étaient subventionnées à 100% et l’Institut du monde arabe couvrait le tiers du coût de la fabrication. Et depuis que l’IMA a cessé de le subventionner, Lattès n’a publié aucune traduction de l’arabe.

Un autre type d’expérience a été mené par l’IMA: c’est de soutenir une maison d’édition, dans les mêmes conditions à peu près, mais pour publier un livre dans une collection littéraire non spécialisée: par exemple, la fameuse collection du «Monde Entier» chez Gallimard, où ont paru les ouvrages d’Emile Habibi. Le premier, Al-Mutashâ’il (Le Peptimiste), a été publié, en effet, avec une subvention importante de l’Institut.

Un peu plus tard, avec le Nobel de Mahfouz, en 1988, une maison d’édition, Denoël, s’est spécialisée dans la traduction de son œuvre. Je dirai tout à l’heure ce que j’en pense. Puis, il y eut Actes Sud, et là je me permets de

et 1995, a connu trois succès. Le premier est un livre de Hanan ElCheikh, Femmes de sable et de myrrhe, qui a été vendu à plus de 6.000 exemplaires, avant d’être publié en poche; le deuxième, le livre de Sonallah Ibrahim, Dhât, traduit en français sous le titre Les Années de Zeth, qui a dépassé les 5.000 exemplaires; enfin, phénomène exceptionnel en France, les 3.000 exemplaires vendus d’une anthologie de Mahmoud Darwich, avec une presse enthousiaste, ce qui est aussi très rare s’agissant de la poésie. En France –ce n’est peutêtre pas le cas en Espagne– les plus grands poètes d’aujourd’hui ne dépassent pas, en effet, les mille exemplaires, sauf évidemment lorsqu’ils sont publiés dans une célèbre collection de poche.

En 1995, Actes Sud a racheté les éditions Sindbad, qui avaient des problèmes financiers à cause, d’une part, de la situation en Algérie, d’autre part, de la maladie de Pierre Bernard. Cela a fait d’Actes Sud le premier éditeur français, peut-être européen, dans les domaines arabe et islamique. Car Sindbad, faut-il le préciser, ne s’intéresse pas qu’à la littérature contemporaine, mais aussi à la littérature classique, à l’architecture, à la mystique, au domaine persan, au domaine turc, etc..

Arrêtons-nous un moment à la fin de 1995. Un travail mené par les bibliothécaires de l’Institut du monde arabe et publié sous le titre Ecrivains arabes d’hier et d’aujourd’hui recense

tous les ouvrages qui existaient sur le marché français à cette date, qu’ils fussent classiques ou contemporains, traduits de l’arabe ou écrits directement en français. Au 31 décembre 1995, quarante-cinq romanciers arabes étaient déjà traduits en français, vingt-trois poètes, trois dramaturges, en plus de deux ouvrages inclassables, deux monuments de la Nahda: La Jambe sur la jambe d’Ahmad Fâris alChidyâq, et L’Or de Paris de Tahtâwî.

Ces chiffres sont assez étonnants pour ce qui est de la poésie. Ils s’expliquent par le fait que beaucoup de poètes vivant en France ont publié à compte d’auteurs, chez certains éditeurs, notamment L’Harmattan. Mais on constate que les plus grands poètes arabes contemporains –Sayyâb, Bayâtî, Adonis, Mahmoud Darwîch, etc.– ont été traduits en français, et c’est un mouvement qui se poursuit. Sindbad a récemment publié une anthologie d’Ounsi al-Hâj; l’année prochaine, paraîtra celle de Saadi Youssef. Notons pour le moment qu’à la fin de 1995, quelque soixante-quinze auteurs arabes contemporains étaient disponibles en français.

En septembre 1995, j’ai pris la responsabilité de Sindbad et de la collection «Mondes arabes» chez Actes Sud. Mon souci principal était de «banaliser» la littérature arabe, c’est-à-dire de la sortir de son exotisme, de la faire lire non comme un document sociologique ou politique, non comme un témoignage ethnologique, mais comme une création littéraire.

seillers éditoriaux. Ils ont souligné aussi le coût élevé de la traduction.

Quand on fait ce qu’on appelle d’un mot assez barbare «la moulinette», c’est-à-dire quand on additionne tous les coûts, y compris les frais généraux, on arrive à des sommes considérables. Selon Chodkievitch et Bernard, il fallait pour équilibrer ces coûts vendre 6.000 exemplaires (ce qui est bien sûr exagéré). De toute façon, le marché algérien a permis à Pierre Bernard de poursuivre son travail pionnier. Au contraire, les éditions du Seuil, après Zayni Barakat, publié en 1985, ont attendu huit ans pour publier un autre livre de Ghitany. Ce qui, sur le plan éditorial, est absolument injustifiable. De son côté, Denoël a réservé les droits de Mahfouz dont les livres se vendent à 8.000/9.000 exemplaires, mais cela ne les a pas amenés à publier régulièrement des auteurs plus jeunes ; chez Denoël a paru un livre de Yahya Haqqî, un autre de Sulaymân Fayyâd, et ce fut le seul de la génération des années soixante auxquels nous nous intéressons tous. Gallimard s’est contenté de Habibi et de Sahar Khalifa, Arléa d’Elias Khoury.

C’est dire que l’édition française, par paresse ou découragement, est restée, dans ce domaine, en-deçà des Espagnols ou des Italiens.

Entre octobre 1995 et octobre 1998, ont été édités cinquante livres sous le label Actes Sud, dont vingttrois de littérature contemporaine, quatorze dans la collection Sindbad, sept dans la collection «Mondes arabes», et

Actes Sud a sans doute donné plus de visibilité –comme on dit aujourd’hui– à la littérature arabe contemporaine, car il s’agit d’une maison d’édition en pleine expansion, distribuée par Flammarion dans un important réseau de librairies. Cela permet une présence physique du livre dans les librairies, en vitrine, sur les étalages. Le fait, par ailleurs, de passer un certain nombre de livres dans la collection de poche «Babel» leur assure une diffusion constante, à un prix très raisonnable.

Qu’en est-il maintenant de la réception de la littérature arabe contemporaine en France? Quand on parle de réception, on pense d’abord au lecteur, mais il y a des médiateurs, des intermédiaires, et c’est là que les choses se décident. Commençons par les éditeurs eux-mêmes. Je me rappelle qu’en 1988, il y a dix ans, un colloque a été organisé à l’Institut du monde arabe, auquel a participé Pierre Bernard, suivi d’un autre colloque, au Caire, auquel a participé Michel Chodkievitch qui était le directeur du Seuil. Tous les deux se sont plaints d’un certain nombre de défaillances dans l’édition arabe, en mettant l’accent sur l’absence de véritables éditeurs dans le monde arabe, qui travaillent pour leurs auteurs, qui tentent de les faire connaître, qui sont en contact avec les éditeurs étrangers, etc. Ils ont noté aussi que la plupart des auteurs arabes n’ont pas d’agents littéraires.

Et que les maisons d’édition françaises n’ont pas assez de moyens pour employer des arabisants comme con-

un dans Actes Sud-Papiers, collection consacrée au théâtre. A quoi s’ajoute un hors-série, paru le mois dernier. Il s’agit de Sabah al-Ward (Matin de rose) de Naguib Mahfouz.

A présent, Actes Sud est l’éditeur quasi exclusif de la littérature arabe contemporaine, et ce n’est pas du tout une bonne chose. Parce que ce monopole involontaire se traduit par une sorte de guettoïsation de cette littérature. Il se trouve, en plus, que le directeur de la collection est maintenant un Arabe et que la plupart des notes de lecture sont écrites par des Arabes.

Or ce n’est évidemment pas le but recherché de la réactivation du mouvement de la traduction.

Par ailleurs, de cette manière, les autres éditeurs se dégagent un peu de leurs responsabilités: puisque Sindbad existe, on est tranquille, on n’investit pas dans la littérature arabe, on n’essaie même pas de s’informer sur la production éditoriale arabe. Si Gallimard, Le Seuil, Denoël, etc. publiaient de la littérature arabe contemporaine, Sindbad pourrait se spécialiser, porter ses efforts sur cinq ou six auteurs, faire un peu ce qui est fait pour la littérature américaine, espagnole, etc.. Mais le fait d’être seul sur ce marché est un poids lourd à porter.

L’année dernière, nous avons publié quatre ou cinq «premiers romans».

Cela ne pouvait pas marcher très fort!

C’est toujours difficile d’avoir à défendre cinq nouveaux noms sur un marché saturé. Muhammad El-Bisatie ne dit rien au lecteur français, ni Hassan

Daoud. Ce sont pourtant des auteurs qui ont beaucoup publié en arabe, qui nous sont proches et que nous aimerions faire connaître au public français.

Mais le libraire, même s’il apprécie Sindbad ou Actes Sud, ne peut pas mettre en évidence tous les livres récents. Ce qui fait que la durée de vie, ou l’espoir de vie, d’un livre est d’un mois ou de deux mois. Après deux mois, le livre est renvoyé à l’éditeur et il disparaît des librairies, sauf s’il a une très bonne presse. Tous les chiffres qu’on vous donne des ventes sont des chiffres qui se rapportent aux trois premiers mois. Sauf exception, le livre ne se vend plus au-delà: il se vend sur commande seulement, donc très peu.

Un autre problème difficile que nous devons affronter à chaque publication est celui de la médiatisation.

D’abord, il est d’usage en France de confier toutes les recensions de la littérature arabe à des journalistes d’origine arabe. C’est-à-dire que celui qui va rendre compte des livres de Sindbad dans Le Monde, c’est Tahar Ben Jelloun, et c’est Maati Kabbal ou Christophe Ayad, dans Libération.

C’est la croix et la bannière pour obtenir une note de lecture d’un critique littéraire français, qui accepte de lire le livre comme un roman, comme une œuvre littéraire, et non comme un témoignage, un document ethnologique ou sociologique.

D’autre part, les hebdomadaires boudent ostensiblement la littérature arabe. Or ce sont probablement le

que. Il est rare qu’une note de lecture aborde l’écriture de l’auteur. Mahmoud Darwich a publié chez Sindbad un ensemble d’entretiens sous le titre La Palestine comme métaphore. C’est un livre que je trouve remarquable, où Darwich proteste justement contre la politisation de sa poésie, où il demande à la critique de traiter de sa poésie en tant que telle, et non seulement de son rôle dans le mouvement national palestinien. Or les notes de lecture à propos de ce livre ont insisté, au contraire, sur ce rôle, avec des titres du genre: «Mahmoud Darwich, la voix du peuple palestinien» ... Un autre exemple: Gamal Ghitany a publié en français Waqâi Hârat al-Za`farânî, un livre très complexe sur le plan de la construction romanesque, mais cela n’a pas intéressé grand monde. On a seulement dit que Gamal Ghitany, dans ce livre, luttait vaillamment contre l’intégrisme islamique!

J’en ai terminé. Mais comme j’ai promis de finir sur une note optimiste, il m’est particulièrement agréable de dire aux responsables de l’Ecole des traducteurs de Tolède tout le bien que je pense de leur travail. Leur lucidité et leur persévérance nous donnent des raisons d’espérer.

support le plus important pour la diffusion. Depuis 1995, nous n’avons eu aucune note de lecture dans Le Nouvel Observateur, ni dans L’Express, ni dans Le Point, ni dans L’Evénement du Jeudi. A quoi s’ajoute parfois un amateurisme doublé de malveillance.

C’est le cas d’un article publié l’année dernière dans Le Nouvel Observateur –le seul, en trois ans, concernant la littérature arabe– tout entier dirigé contre les écrivains égyptiens de la génération des années soixante, et notamment Gamal Ghitany. Dans cet article, la journaliste met dans la bouche de Gamal des propos qu’il ne pouvait avoir dit –nous le connaissons assez–, et quand il a envoyé une lettre à Jean Daniel, protestant contre la déformation de ses propos, elle n’a pas été publiée. Et puis, il y a les clichés. Tel journaliste va en Egypte pour faire un reportage littéraire à l’occasion de l’Année de l’Egypte en France. Il revient sans avoir rencontré un seul écrivain, mais convaincu de l’incommunicabilité entre écrivains égyptiens et journalistes français!

Enfin, nous souffrons de la politisation à outrance de la littérature arabe.

Toutes les oeuvres traduites sont immédiatement saisies sous l’angle politi-

e vous parlerai d'abord de mon expérience de traductrice et directeur d'une série littéraire consacrée à la littérature arabe contemporaine. Je vous donnerai ensuite un bref aperçu des traductions faites en Italie par les orientalistes depuis le début de siècle et jusqu'en 1988. Par ailleurs, je vous parlerai des retards et des dégâts causés à une production littéraire que ces derniers ont considéré mineure par rapport à la production occidentale, et donc pas digne d'être traduite. Je vous parlerai enfin des efforts réalisés par une nouvelle génération d'arabisants pour rattraper le temps perdu et faire connaître le mieux possible la littérature arabe contemporaine ainsi que de l'accueil fait à cette production littéraire dans mon pays.

Pour ce qui concerne le passé, les critiques peuvent être ainsi synthétisées: indifférence presque totale pour la production littéraire contemporaine; traductions trop scientifiques, trop liées

à l'original, avec des introductions critiques et des notes explicatives dignes d'un texte universitaire plutôt que d'une oeuvre littéraire; absence presque totale d'une recherche esthétique dans la langue cible, l'italien en l'occurrence.

Tout cela a produit dans le passé une indifférence de la part des éditeurs italiens, qui ont ignoré complètement la narrative arabe et l'ont reléguée dans le domaine exclusif des études orientalistes. Cependant, la poésie est restée dans le domaine des spécialistes surtout à cause de l'absence de bons traducteurs-poètes.

Du début du siècle jusqu'à la fin de 1970, mis à part le cas de Jibran Khalil Jibran, qui a continué jusqu'à nos jours à être publié –mais il s'agit surtout de traductions de l'anglais– il y a eu très peu de traductions de l'arabe, et la plupart ont été des traductions faites dans le cadre de publications académiques1.

brieli a été le premier qui a cherché à publier en dehors du milieu universitaire. Mais après deux livres parus dans les années 40, un recueil d'écrivains égyptiens (Gabrieli, 1941), et un recueil des écrits de Mayy Ziyadeh (Ziada, 1945), il s'est tourné vers d'autres centres d'intérêts et a presque abandonné la production arabe contemporaine.

Toujours dans les années 40 Umberto Rizzitano a traduit de l'arabe Zaynab de Muhammad Husayn Haykal (Haikal, 1944), mais après il faut attendre les années 60 pour retrouver un autre livre traduit de l'arabe: il s'agit du Livre des Jours de Taha Husein, traduit toujours par Umberto Rizzitano (Husein, 1965).

Il faut ajouter que, au début des années soixante, quelques maisons d'édition avaient déjà manifesté un certain intérêt pour le monde arabe.

C'était l'époque des événements algériens, et, par conséquent, les maisons d'édition avaient publié un certain nombre de travaux d'auteurs algériens d'expression française (Haddad, 1960; Dal Sasso, 1962; Chraibi, 1974).

A la fin des années 70, l'Institut pour l'Orient de Rome, sous la direction d'Umberto Rizzitano, a créé une série de littérature arabe contemporaine, "Collana di letteratura araba contemporanea", avec l'aide du Centre Nationale de Recherche (CNR). Toutefois, cette série n'a pas donné les résultats espérés et a

cessé d'exister trois années seulement après sa création et après la publication de trois livres: il s'agit de trois recueils de nouvelles d'auteurs égyptiens, tunisiens et syriens (Barresi, 1977; Hamzawi, 1979; Tamer, 1979). Cet échec peut être attribué à l'époque même, car il n'y avait pas encore l'intérêt qu'il y a aujourd'hui pour la production arabe contemporaine, et encore moins pour des traductions qui ressemblaient plus à des études scientifiques qu'à des oeuvres littéraires, et c'est pourquoi ces trois livres sont passés inaperçus, ont été ignorés par la presse et par le milieu littéraire, et par conséquent, n'ont pas été vendus.

En 1976, Francesco Gabrieli et Virginia Vacca ont fait paraître une anthologie de la littérature arabe (Gabrieli, Vacca, 1976), où parmi des morceaux choisis de l'époque classique, il y avait quelques extraits de la production arabe contemporaine, et bien sûr, selon les connaissances de l'époque, il y avait un bref extrait de Taha Hussain, Les jours, un autre de Mahmud Taymur et Tawfiq al-Hakim, et une première nouvelle traduite de Nagib Mahfuz2.

Pour ce qui concerne les traductions des pièces théâtrales, l'auteur le plus traduit en Italie, comme d'ailleurs dans le reste de l'Europe, a été Tawfiq al-Hakim, dont ont été publiées jusqu'à la fin des années quatre-vingts, dix-huit pièces, parues exclusivement dans des pu-

En Italie, bien avant l'attribution des prix littéraires aux écrivains arabes, ont paru les premières traductions modernes de la littérature arabe écrites en arabe, par des écrivains palestiniens, et surtout publiées pour la première fois hors du cercle académique. L'auteur palestinien le plus traduit a été Ghassan Kanafani, dont les trois romans: Rijal fi shams, Umm Sa'd et 'A'id ila Haifa, parus entre 1984 et 1985. Dans la même période ont été traduits aussi deux autres courts romans: l'un d'Emil Habibi, Sudasiyyat al-ayyam al-sitta et l'autre de Tawfiq Fayyad, Salim Bahlul(Palestina - Tre racconti, 1984; Kanafani, 1985).

Il faut dire qu'en Italie ces cinq traductions ont vraiment ouvert le chemin à la littérature arabe contemporaine, parce quelles ont étés les premières traductions de romans arabes à être publiés par une maison d'édition normale même s'il s'agissait d'un petit éditeur, motivé, comme moi, d'un fort engagement politique et du désir de faire connaître la cause palestinienne, même à travers un travail littéraire.

A ces premières traductions de la narrative palestinienne il faut ajouter un autre livre publié par la même maison d'édition sur le théâtre palestinien.

Il s'agit de la traduction de trois pièces du théâtre de Ghassan Kanafani, d'Emil Habibi et de Mu'in Bsisu, traduites par Ferial Barresi (Palestina Dimensione Teatro, 1985).

blications académiques. La seule Ahl alKahf, par exemple a été traduite deux fois par deux orientalistes (Al-Hakim, 1959; 1960). Hormis le cas de Tawfiq al-Hakim, il y a eu également une dizaine de pièces d'auteurs arabes traduites à partir de celles des frères Taymur, ainsi que dernièrement quelques pièces du plus grand dramaturge arabe actuel, Sa'd Allah Wannus, dont ont été traduites trois pièces, mais toujours dans le cadre de publications scientifiques (Wannus, 1984, 1989). Dans les années passées, le théâtre a été mieux connu par les spécialistes, tandis que le roman et la nouvelle ont été presque totalement ignorés, non seulement par les éditeurs, mais aussi par les mêmes spécialistes.

Quelques données: du début du siècle jusqu'à 1988 ont été traduites 25 pièces théâtrales, ou extraits de pièces théâtrales, tandis que 12 romans ou recueils de nouvelles, dont seulement 6 de 1984 à 1987, ont été publiés.

Cette dernière donnée s'explique par le fait qu'au début des années 80 il y a eu un véritable regain d'intérêt pour le monde arabe et par conséquent pour la production littéraire contemporaine aussi.

Ainsi, de même que dans les années soixante il y avait eu un certain intérêt pour la cause algérienne, dans les années quatre-vingts en Italie, comme dans le reste d'Europe, la question palestinienne a commencé à monopoliser l'attention des médias, d'où une augmentation des publications sur la Palestine, et par la suite de la production littéraire palestinienne.

merciaux, mais dans le même temps il n'a pas été un véritable échec pour la maison d'édition. Les romans de Kanafani, par exemple, ont connu deux ou trois rééditions (chaque édition de 2.000 copies), et pour cette époque-là ce résultat était très encourageant.

C'est pour cela que je pense que, en Italie, le vrai début de l'intérêt pour la littérature arabe a été la littérature palestinienne, qui pour la première fois a suscité l'intérêt de la presse aussi, même s'il s'agissait essentiellement d'une certaine presse militante de gauche3.

Mais, comme on sait, a la fin des années quatre-vingts, il y a eu un autre élément qui a contribué à faire sortir la littérature arabe des académies: c'est l'attribution des prix littéraires conférés pour la première fois par l'occident à des écrivains arabes: le Prix Goncourt (1987) à Tahar Benjelloun, un an avant le prix Nobel à Najib Mahfuz (1988).

Lorsque, en 1987, a éclaté le cas de Tahar Ben Jelloun, qui a fait la fortune surtout de quelques maisons d'édition parmi les plus grandes d'Italie4, bien d'autres éditeurs plus petits, se sont lancés dans cette aventure éditoriale et ont inauguré des séries littéraires consacré-

es à la littérature arabe ou de façon plus générale à la production littéraire de la Méditerranée, dans l'espoir de pouvoir eux aussi vendre des dizaines de milliers de copies, comme ce fut le cas pour les éditeurs de Ben Jelloun5.

Mais la plupart de ces éditeurs n'avaient pas les compétences nécessaires pour entrer dans le domaine de la littérature arabe, et ils se sont lancés surtout dans la traduction des auteurs arabes maghrébins d'expression française, langue qu'ils pouvaient bien lire. Tandis que pour ce qui concerne la littérature arabe, écrite en arabe, ils ont commis bon nombre d'erreurs et de dégâts. Le cas le plus révélateur a été celui de l'égyptienne Nawal al-Sa'dawi, écrivain dont on a publié deux romans traduits de l'anglais (al-Saadawi,1986; 1989), car les éditeurs ne savaient même pas que l'original était en arabe, et il y a eu bien d'autres cas où les éditeurs ont traduit de l'anglais ou du français des romans écrits en arabe sans le déclarer, chose qui ne peut pas échapper à l'oeil attentif d'un traducteur.

Le grand événement du prix Nobel à Najib Mahfuz en 1988 a vraiment pris de court les maisons d'éditions italien-

mythique atmosphère d'une Alexandrie d'Egypte, cosmopolite et mystérieuse, que les italiens ont tant aimé.

A partir du moment où les maisons d'éditions venaient de découvrir Mahfuz et la littérature arabe, je me suis dite que celui-ci allait bénéficier d'une attention particulière grâce à son prix Nobel, et j'ai donc décidé de me tourner vers d'autres auteurs arabes qui, autrement, seraient restés dans l'ombre. C'est ainsi que j'ai traduit un autre roman palestinien, Said ou le Péptimiste d'Emil Habibi, jusqu'à ce qu'une petite maison d'édition romaine, très courageuse, Jouvence, m'ait offert l'occasion de diriger une série littéraire entièrement consacrée à la narrative arabe, que nous avons nommée "Narratori Arabi Contemporanei", et qui a publié jusqu'à présent 30 romans des plus grands écrivains arabes, tels 'Abd al-Rahman Munif, Edwar al-Kharrat, Baha Taher, Sahar Khalifa, Hanan Cheikh, Ghada Samman, Jabra Ibrahim Jabra, Hanna Mina, 'Abd al-Salam al-'Ujayli, Ibrahim al-Koni et bien d'autres6, dont les oeuvres ont étés toutes traduites par des jeunes arabisants, qui ont eu parfois l'occasion d'avoir des contacts directs avec les écrivains.

En Italie il faut citer deux autres maisons d'édition, Abramo de Catanzaro en Calabre et Edizioni Lavoro de Rome, qui se sont engagées dans la publication de la narrative arabe contemporaine et qui n'ont pas eu toujours la vie facile, surtout à cause du manque d'in-

nes, qui n'y étaient pas préparées. Et c'est ainsi que j'ai commencé ma carrière de traductrice, car à l'époque il n'y avait pas d'autres "universitaires" ayant une expérience de traduction non académique. Et comme j'ai affirmé récemment dans une entrevue à un journal égyptien, je dois dire que "hazz Mahfuz" a été aussi "hazzi". C'est à dire la grande chance de Najib Mahfuz, et à partir de lui de toute une littérature arabe, a aussi été la mienne en tant que traductrice.

De plus, à cette époque la littérature arabe contemporaine continuait à être considérée dans nos milieux universitaires, comme un champ d'études de deuxième catégorie, et pas digne de l'intérêt des orientalistes, qui critiquaient en général ces traductions en les classant comme des travaux pas digne d'un bon "orientaliste". Mais heureusement cette mentalité commence doucement à disparaître, grâce aussi à une nouvelle génération d'intellectuels comme Edward Said, qui a finalement mis en évidence les méfaits de cette catégorie d'orientalistes.

Si dans le passé je n'arrivais pas à trouver des éditeurs, prêts à publier mes traductions de l'arabe, voilà qu'au bout de quelques années les choses ont radicalement changé, puisque ce sont les éditeurs qui sont venus me trouver pour me proposer des traductions et bien sûr les premières traductions qu'on m'a offert étaient des traductions de Najib Mahfuz, dont j'ai traduit le roman Miramar, que j'ai choisi pour la

térêt des médias pour des auteurs autres que Tahar Ben Jelloun et Najib Mahfuz.

Et de ces deux maisons d'édition, seulement la deuxième continue à publier des livres arabes, tandis que l'autre s'est tourné vers d'autres intérêts7.

Dans les années 90 bien d'autres petites maisons d'édition ont inauguré de nouvelles séries littéraires d'auteurs arabes, mais ont échoué dans leurs aventures après quelques publications seulement. Je cite par exemple un éditeur de l'Italie du nord, qui a abandonné la littérature arabe après la parution de deux seuls romans: l'un de Magid Tobiya (Tubiya, 1991) et l'autre de Fathi Ghanim (Ghanim, 1991). Mais cette fois l'échec revient surtout aux traductions qui étaient des travaux de thèses universitaires, publiées sans aucun souci de rédaction, avec des dizaines de notes, incompréhensibles pour un lecteur ordinaire.

Un autre échec éditorial a été celui d'une nouvelle maison d'édition sicilienne qui a publié trois livres traduits de l'arabe, avant de disparaître complètement de la scène éditoriale italienne, et après avoir fait disparaître avec elle deux romans de Son' Allah Ibrahim et un autre de Ibrahim al-Koni (Sonallah, 1993; 1994; al-Koni, 1995).

Ainsi des écrivains arabes ont été très mal connus ou sont restés dans l'ombre par la faute de ces éditeurs peu sérieux. Ces échecs se retournent avant tout contre les mêmes auteurs arabes, qui ne seront jamais connus dans un pays, mais ils doivent aussi

prendre conscience de leur erreur; celle d'avoir signé des contrats de traduction sans avoir des garanties sur la traduction et sur la maison d'édition.

Ce genre d'erreurs entre écrivain et éditeur pourrait, sans doute, un jour être évité avec l'aide d'une agence littéraire sérieuse et responsable, qui défendrait les droits des écrivains et pourrait leur épargner bien des soucis.

Sans entrer dans l'analyse du manque de clairvoyance ou du manque de vision à long terme de certaines petites maisons d'édition, qui ont publié des séries consacrées à la production "méditerranéenne" contemporaine, ou plus largement à la production du soi-disant "sud du monde", on peut se poser spontanément la question de savoir si cette production aujourd'hui est assez appréciée par le lecteur italien, malgré le nombre d'oeuvres traduites. Depuis 1988, sans compter les données sur les livres de Jibran Khalil Jibran, en Italie ont été traduits plus de 70 romans ou recueils de nouvelles d'auteurs arabes d'expression arabe. Et d'autres sont en cours.

Mais l'impression qu'on peut avoir est qu'il y a encore une forte indifférence envers cette culture qui, après tout, reste méconnue. On peut même arriver au paradoxe que le lecteur, aujourd'hui, comme hier quand il n'y avait pas de traductions, continue à avoir les mêmes connaissances et la même attitude stéréotypée vers la culture arabe et en général vers le monde arabo-musulman.

lle entre l'Egypte et l'Europe", qui a eu lieu en 1995 au Caire (10 et 11 juin 1995), les participants européens ont parlé de la traduction de la langue arabe dans leurs pays respectifs, et ils se sont trouvés d'accord pour dire que, en dépit des énormes efforts faits dans les dernières années par des maisons d'éditions, l'Europe, au-delà du cas de Tahar Ben Jelloun et de Najib Mahfuz, n'a pas réussi à faire sortir la littérature arabe d'un cercle étroit de quelque amateur ou de quelque survivant tiers-mondiste.

Il faut donc faire une autocritique et chercher à comprendre si le résultat de cet "échec" doit être imputé aux experts ou aux éditeurs, qui n'ont pas su encourager le lecteur européen à s'intéresser à cette partie du monde, ou plutôt il s'agit d'un échec provoqué par une politique éditoriale générale, qui suit la "Politique" (avec un /P/ majuscule), et dans ce cas, nous nous rendons compte que nous nous sommes engagés dans la bataille de Don Quichotte.

Si nous pouvons récriminer, il nous faut admettre que les dégâts doivent être imputés avant tout aux orientalistes, qui n'ont pas su préparer la nouvelle génération à entrer dans l'actualité, qui n'ont pas été prévoyants et n'ont jamais considéré la traduction comme un moyen de connaissance du monde contemporain. Ils ont condamné tout un peuple, qu'ils avaient d'ailleurs euxmêmes choisi d'étudier, à demeurer dans leur âge d'or dans la conviction que le présent n'avait rien de bon à offrir, et ils ont considéré la langue arabe comme une langue "morte" qu'ils tra-

d'arabe (première année) de l'Université de Naples quelles étaient leurs connaissances de la littérature arabe et des auteurs arabes, puisqu'ils avaient choisi d'étudier cette langue, ils m'ont répondu qu'ils connaissaient les "Mille et une nuit", et ils savent qu'il existe un livre saint qui s'appelle "Coran", mais ils n'ont jamais entendu parler de Mahfuz, ni d'autres écrivains arabes.

Ce n'est pas l'Université de Naples la pierre du scandale, mais je peux vous assurer, en partant de mon expérience dans plusieurs milieux italiens de l'école, ou de la presse, etc., que ces constatations sont vraiment très fréquentes et pas seulement chez les étudiants de première année de l'université, mais parfois même chez les intellectuels.

Malgré le grand nombre de traductions faites dans les dix dernières années, et malgré l'augmentation de l'intérêt politique pour cette partie du monde, il n'y a pas eu une augmentation proportionnelle du désir de bien connaître le monde arabe et par conséquent sa culture. Il paraît, plutôt, que les informations qui filtrent à travers les traductions, aujourd'hui correctes, soient submergées par la marée d'informations fausses et inexactes que les médias insinuent dans l'esprit du lecteur occidental en général.

Mais cette situation ne se limite pas à l'Italie. L'expérience européenne du projet "Mémoires de la Méditerranée", nous a bien montré qu'en Europe il y a les mêmes difficultés et qu'il faut combattre les mêmes stéréotypes, en Suède comme en Italie. Dans une conférence internationale sur la "politique culture-

duisaient seulement à l'aide des dictionnaires comme le latin ou le grec ancien. Et c'est cette attitude qui a condamné la culture et la production arabe contemporaine à rester dans l'ombre.

Un orientaliste hongrois dans un livre des années 40 a écrit que les orientalistes européens en général: "quand ils traduisent n'importe quelle oeuvre littéraire arabe, ils l'analysent du point de vue philologique, mais ils ne la jugent pas selon l'esthétique.

Pour eux les oeuvres des écrivains orientaux sont des études scientifiques..." (Germanus, 1946: 229-230) Pour revenir au titre de cette communication, L'Italie découvre la littérature Arabe: est-ce grâce a Mahfuz?, il faut admettre que, en dépit de toutes ces traductions, des prix littéraires, ni Mahfuz, ni les autres auteurs arabes traduits en italien, ont vraiment eu un poids dans le panorama littéraire italien, comme par exemple dans le cas de la littérature sud-américaine. Ainsi, ces traductions n'ont pas pu changer ne serait-ce que le regard stéréotypé des occidentaux vers le monde arabe, ou de façon plus générale vers le monde arabo-musulman. Comme on sait bien la littérature stimulée par les prix littéraires provoque parfois des modes passagères, plutôt qu'un réel intérêt pour la production littéraire d'un monde que nous ne connaissons pas, et surtout que nous ne voulons pas connaître. En même temps, nous comprenons le succès de Tahar Ben Jelloun, parce que, avec ses livres, il a très souvent confirmé le stéréotype si cher aux occidentaux.

Mais, si avec ces constatations j'ai donné un cadre trop pessimiste, je fais alors recours au "Peptimiste" d'Emile Habibi pour dire que, après tout, la situation pouvait être pire, car ces traductions nous permettent aujourd'hui, nous traducteurs de littérature arabe, d'exister et de nous réunir ici.

n initial look at the translation of contemporary Arabic literature in Spain would appear to indicate that this activity, traditionally linked to academic environments, has undergone significant changes as a result of the Nobel Prize awarded to Naguib Mahfuz in October 1988.

Over the last ten years the number of works translated has risen considerably, as has the number of publishing houses interesting themselves in Arabic literature, among them some of the major players in the industry with efficient distribution channels permitting access to a more general public.

The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the translation into Spanish of contemporary Arabic literature in the last decade, and to discuss the possibility of a golden age of Arabic/Spanish translation. We will look at the peculiarities of this so-ca-

lled publishing “boom”, as well as at its limitations and actual scope.

The contents of this paper are divided into three sections. The first sets out general characteristics of the translation of modern Arabic literature in Spain prior to1998. The second contains an analysis of the impact of the first Nobel Prize to be awarded to an Arab author. Finally, the third section deals with the translation into Spanish of the works of Naguib Mahfuz.

The information used in preparing this overview with reference to the period from 1973 to 1998 has been gleaned from the databases of the Spanish Agency of ISBN (Ministry of Culture). For the preceding years, Bibliografia provisional de obras árabes traducidas al español (Garulo, 1988) was used. Information relating to both periods has been supplemen-

1. Translation of contemporary arabic literature prior to the Nobel prize for Naguib Mahfuz Since the beginning of the 19th century the academic, university based, school of Spanish Arabism has been characterized by its detachment from Spain’s limited colonial adventure in Morocco and the Western Sahara. Followers of Ribera and Codera suffered from “ensimismamiento andalusista” (Andalusian self-absorption), deriving from their favorite subject of study: Al-Andalus, which in Spain has been called our “domestic Orient” (López García, 1990:40-41).

The other, non-university oriented, school of Spanish Arabism is that known as Africanism. This movement was linked to colonialism and focussed primarily on historical or anthropological aspects of Morocco, while contemporary literature was relegated to a secondary position (López García, 1997).

The initial stages of the translation of contemporary Arabic literature in Spain were undertaken by Arabism’s champion in the second half of the 20th century, Emilio García Gómez, to whom we owe the first two translations into Spanish Los días (Husayn, 1954)

and Diario de un fiscal rural (Hakim, 1955), whose authors were major figures in contemporary Egyptian literature. The translation of these works coincided with the foreign policy strategy designed by Franco’s regime of maintaining “the traditional relations of friendship with the Arab world”, in an attempt to break the international isolation Spain was subject to at that time.

Within this context, the Instituto Hispano Árabe de Cultura (IHAC) was created in 1954, depending on the Foreign Ministry and run by Emilio García Gómez (Hernando de Larramendi y Núñez, 1996:42-43) In 1955 the IHAC commenced the “Collection of Contemporary Arabic Authors” with Diario de un fiscal rural. This collection represents the first editorial effort at disseminating contemporary Arabic literature in Spain.

In the mid-1960’s a new generation of Arabists, under the aegis of the IHAC, undertook the preparation of anthologies of plays, stories and poetry. At this time plays by Tawfiq alHakim and Kamil Husayn and stories

by Muhammad Taymur, Mahmud alBadawi, Yusuf Idris and others were translated. The translators involved in this project were, inter alia, Federico Corriente, María Eugenia Gálvez, María Jesús Viguera, Joaquín Vallvé, José María Fórneas, Pedro Chalmeta, Julían Gómez Izquierdo, etc.

and contemporary Arabism. The staff of this new magazine comprised, inter alia, María Jesús Viguera, Carmen Ruiz Bravo-Villasante, Serafín Fanjul, Federico Arbós, María Luisa Cavero, Marcelino Villegas, Fernando de Ágreda and José Rodríguez Trobajo.

This period saw the translation of poetry, narrative works, plays and essays, in declining order based on the number of works published.

The first collection of poetry to be translated into Spanish was Antología de la poesía árabe contemporánea (Martínez Montávez, 1958) by Pedro Martínez Montávez in 1958. The earliest examples of contemporary Arabic theatre were published by the IHAC in 1963 in the second issue of its “Collection of Contemporary Authors”, which contained short pieces by Tawfiq al-Hakim (Hakim, 1963) rendered into Spanish by various translators. In 1977 the Instituto Egipcio de Estudios Islámicos published Sherezada (Hakim, 1977), also by Tawfiq al-Hakim.

The fourth issue of this collection in1964 brought to Spanish readers the first anthology of stories under the name Nuevos cuentos árabes, comprising works by diverse writers, including the Taymur brothers, Yusuf Idris, Zakariya Tamer, al-Uyaili, etc.

Shortly thereafter Marcelino Villegas and María Jesús Viguera would continue in this vein, producing the translation Narraciones árabes del siglo XX (Villegas, Viguera, 1969) In 1985 the publishing house CantArabia, founded as a result of the

during this period. Apart from the IHAC, other institutions publishing Arabic translations include the Instituto Egipcio de Estudios Islámicos (IEEI) and the Casa Hispano-Árabe. The Instituto Hispano-Árabe de Cultura published 18 translations between 1955 and 1988. The Instituto Egipcio de Estudios Islámicos, founded in 1950 as a center for Egyptian culture in Madrid, published nine translations from its creation to 1988. La Casa Hispano-Árabe is a private association founded in 1968 to “foment cultural relations between Spain and the Arab world”, which between 1968 and 1973 published seven translations from the Arabic (López García, 1997) In Spain, as well as in other European countries, the Seven-Day War and the Israeli occupation of new Palestinian territories gave rise to a new perspective on the Arab question.

The focus of Arabism in the university and academic environments until that time paid only limited attention to cultural and political manifestations of the contemporary Arabic world.

Subsequent to this event, a political and contemporary commitment in Spanish Arabism becomes palpable at a university level.

The weekly magazine “Almenara”, linked to the Arab Studies department of the newly created Universidad Autónoma of Madrid commenced publication in 1971 under the direction of Pedro Martínez Montávez, who is truly responsible for the epistemological break between Andalusian

efforts of the Arabist Carmen Ruíz Bravo, also chose a collection of stories to commence its activities, publishing Del Atlas al Tigris, relatos árabes de hoy (Ruiz, 1985) At this time, translators favored the translation of isolated poems, stories and fragments over that of complete works. Since then, modern Arabic literature has gained territory as a subject for specialized study, resulting in numerous theses and dissertations, many of which included or were used as the spring-board for future translations.

2. Translation of contemporary arabic literature in Spain from 1989 to 1998 First of all, to properly situate the analysis of events in the past decade, certain figures relating to editorial production and translation in Spain should be considered. From 1989 to 1998 an average of 40,000 titles have been published annually, of which 27% reflect translations, 60% from English. Of the 100,000 translations published in Spain in the last decade, 98 were contemporary Arabic works, representing 0.098% of the total. Of these, 88 were translated directly from the Arabic, and the remainder indirectly from English.

Of the total of 98 translations, more than 30% relate to works by Mahfuz, while the rest comprise 33 novels, 13 books of poetry, 7 collections of plays, 7 anthologies of stories and 3 essays by various other authors.

Additionally, during this period another of the major characteristics of Arabic translation in Spain comes to light: the publication of works in other languages of Spain. Since 1989, nine contemporary works have been translated directly from the Arabic into Catalan, the majority by Dolors Cinca, who is also the co-translator of a new version of Arabian nights. As far as translation into Basque is concerned, we are only aware of an intermediary and fragmentary version of Arabian nights.

Changes following the awarding of the Nobel Prize to Mahfuz As we will see, the long-standing desire of Arabists, and especially translators of Arabic, to reach a wider, less specialized public, is achieved at the end of the 80’s, due in great part, if not entirely, to the awarding of the Nobel Prize to the Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfuz. This great author is partially responsible for bringing modern Arabic literature into the public eye and to the desks of major publishing houses, prompting a commercial interest in the publication of contemporary Arabic works.

From a publishing point of view, in the 90’s activities concentrated on private rather than State-owned publishing houses, with the consequent emphasis on economic factors. However, the change in focus was not dramatic, bearing in mind that many private publishers received subsidies from national or international institutions, such

As mentioned before, one of the most important characteristics of the publication of Arabic literature in Spain between 1989 and 1998 is the changeover to a commercial focus.

The work carried out during this decade by small publishing houses connected to the Arabist world, such as CantArabia and TAT, and other medium sized like Libertarias, Ediciones del Oriente y del Mediterráneo or Huerga & Fierro has been intensive, while major publishers like Plaza y Janés, Planeta De Agostini, Martínez Roca and Edhasa, as well as Alianza and Destino, have finally become interested in this type of literature. Círculo de Lectores, which merits a category of its own due to its purely commercial nature and its wide-reaching organization, enters the scene in 1991, coinciding with the Mahfuz phenomenon.

As a counterpoint to the dominance of institutional publishing in the previous period, as of 1989 university publishers, those arising from Arabism and those relating to public entities represent only 22% of the publishing activity, as opposed to 50% by commercial houses (such as Libertarias or Ediciones del Oriente y del Mediterráneo) and 28% by major publishers, such as Planeta or Plaza y Janés, which dedicate themselves mainly to Mahfuz.

At the end of the 80’s another editorial trend takes over which, while not affecting Arabic translation directly, is indicative of the paths Arab literature

as the Instituto de Cooperación con el Mundo Árabe, the Ministry of Culture, the European Cultural Foundation or the UNESCO. Nevertheless, the publication services of certain Spanish universities, as well as the IEEI and even the ICMA, have continued to publish translations of modern Arabic literature although, granted, on a much more limited scale than in past decades. This change has led to a tangible improvement in distribution channels and, as a consequence, in the ability to reach a much wider and diverse audience.

From a literary point of view, the narrative genres took on a greater importance, while the preference for anthologies, collective or individual, was largely replaced by works respecting the original Arabic format, be it a collection of stories or a novel.

In this decade, in which the number of titles translated each year has clearly increased, Egyptian authors continue to lead the field with 45 translated works, of which 25 – more than half – are by Mahfuz. The Egyptians are followed by the Palestinians with 15 translated works.

In spite of the obvious predominance of Egyptian literature, the geography of the original texts is changing. The Maghreb, and especially Morocco, is becoming a more frequent source for texts. Since 1990 ten contemporary works by authors from the Maghreb have been translated directly from the original Arabic. Previously, only two such works had been translated into Spanish.

frequently takes. This trend relates to the numerous editions and reeditions of the works of Khalil Gibran, most of which are translated from the English.

This line, exploited by commercial publishing houses, takes advantage of the wave of new age spiritualism observed in Spain in recent years. We find works

by Gibran side by side in catalogues with books on spiritualism, esoteric sciences and cabalism, parapsychology, mysticism, etc.

The collections The changeover to commercial publishing brought with it another of the new features of the publication of Arabic literature in this period: the emergence of collections of Arabic literature in houses not specialized in this area. For example, with the launch of the “Al-Quibla” collection in 1990 by Libertarias/Prodhufi, the writer Juan Goytisolo commences a new era in the translation from Arabic to Spanish by introducing for the first time in a commercial publishing house a collection dedicated to Arabic literature and essays on the modern Arab world.

The spin-off of Libertarias/Prodhufi gave rise to a new collection, “Al-Kalima”, headed by María Luisa Prieto in Huerga & Fierro, which produced six titles between 1994 and 1996. At the same time the “Al-Quibla” collection continued, bringing out the tenth title in 1997 with Los textos de las Pirámides by Gamal El Guitani.

In the last three years, Ediciones del Oriente y del Mediterráneo, which was originally specialized in Maghrebi literature in French with occasional titles by Adonis, has incorporated the collection “Memorias del Mediterráneo”, dedicated to the publication of original works in Arabic of an autobiographical nature. At present, six titles have been published.

In addition to these collections, since commencing activities in 1985 CantArabia has produced around twenty titles within its collection “Los Mil y un Textos”.

The “al-Nahda” collection, linked to the Grupo de Investigación Estudios Árabes Contemporáneos of the University of Granada and produced through the Granada-based companies TAT and Impredisur, comprises six titles to date.

The collection “Las otras culturas”, published by Martínez Roca, includes seven novels translated from the Arabic.

The translators With the exception of works like El pan desnudo and Tiempo de errores (Chukri, 1982 and 1995) or Los textos de las pirámides (Guitani, 1997), the majority of Arabic literature in Spain has been translated by Spaniards educated in Spanish universities, who combine translation with teaching and research activities. This situation is understandable, taking into consideration that the Arabic has traditionally been taught exclusively at the Facul-

In general, the last decade has been witness to a multitude of new authors and translators. At the same time as many Arab writers are being translated for the first time in Spain, numerous new translators are also producing their first efforts. It is too early to determine whether this is a sporadic movement or if the presence of Arabic literature will continue in the Spanish publishing market. Nevertheless, what is clear is that a line has been drawn, with a marked renovation of this field and the introduction of new translators.

3. Translation and publication of the works of Naguib Mahfuz in Spain

The first translation of Mahfuz into Spanish appears in 1960, in issue 2 of the magazine Al-Rábita. The work was El Murmullo de la locura, translated by Pedro Martínez Montávez.

Today, 38 years later, anyone wishing to read Mahfuz in Spanish has 33 works to choose from, comprising 27 novels, 5 collections of short stories and his autobiography. Those interested in reading Mahfuz in Catalan can select from among four novels.

Equally revealing in determining the impact of this author on the Spanish market is the fact that Spanish bookstores have handled in the neighborhood of 90 editions of his works, as well as stories published in magazines and newspapers. While we have no figures regarding the number of printings, the commercial success at-

ties of Arabic Studies at Spanish universities. Translation has generally gone hand in hand with research as a part of the activities of Arabic philologists. Nevertheless, among the translations carried out by pairs of translators in recent years, there are various cases of Spanish and Arabic translators working in tandem.

The are multiple incidences of team translations during the 80’s. In addition to translation in pairs, which had already been seen in the previous period, various cases of teams of translators could be observed, collaborating not only on anthologies, but also on individual works. This is the case of the trilogy Entre dos palacios (1989 e), Palacio del deseo (Mahfuz, 1990 b) and La azucarera (Mahfuz, 1990c), which was entrusted to a group of translators at the University of Seville.

This category also includes Hijos de nuestro barrio (Mahfuz, 1990 a), which was signed by five pseudonyms due to the criticism received from certain Muslim sectors and the general uneasiness arising from the persecution of Salman Rushdie.

Few Arab authors have seen more than three of their works translated into Spanish. Exceptions are Mahfuz, who we will look at in the following section, and Al-Bayati, with ten collections of poetry in Spanish. Also exceptional is the translator who specializes in one author, as is the case of Federico Arbós with Abd el-Wahhab al-Bayati, or Marcelino Villegas and subsequently Mª Luisa Prieto with Mahfuz.

tained by the works of Mahfuz is evidenced by the translation of 28 of his 34 novels to date, many of which continue to be reprinted.

However, until 1988 the only monographic translations available were the stories contained in El difícil amor (Mahfuz, 1969), Cuentos ciertos e inciertos (Mahfuz, 1974) and Principio y fin (Mahfuz, 1988). This first stage of the introduction of the works of Mahfuz in Spain was achieved through efforts on both the academic and commercial publishing fronts.

The three above works were translated by Marcelino Villegas, translator and Arabist who concentrated his research on the works of Mahfuz, and were published by the Instituto Hispano Árabe de Cultura and the Casa Hispano-Árabe.

Remarkably, the short story form only received attention in the periods directly preceding and following the awarding of the Nobel. Two of the five currently available compilations were translated prior to 1988, in 1969 and 1974. The remaining three came to light in 1989: Historias de nuestro barrio (Mahfuz, 1989 a), Dialogadas (Mahfuz, 1989 b) and Cuentos para contar (Mahfuz, 1989 c). This last work is not precisely a new translation, but rather the independent publication of stories gleaned from Historias de nuestro barrio in an illustrated children’s version. The compilations referred to above are anthologies of stories from collections of Mahfuz and were prepared following various

criteria. With the exception of Historias de nuestro barrio, to date there has been no translation of a complete collection of stories in the format originally conceived by the author.

After 1989 and the initial flurry of activity, publishing houses and translators concentrated on the novel format and disregarded short stories altogether. However, thanks to reeditions, in 1988 the IHAC recovers Cuentos ciertos e inciertos, a collection which is taken up by the Círculo de Lectores in 1989 and published in paperback version by Edhasa in 1993. In 1995 Libertarias-Prodhufi republishes Cuentos para contar in a volume of children’s stories.

The awarding of the Nobel Prize to Mahfuz and the consequent introduction of his work into the commercial domain catches publishers off guard. His most well known, and weighty, novels had not yet been translated. To satisfy the immediate demand, certain publishing houses opted for indirect translations from the English, which is the case of both El callejón de los milagros (Mahfuz, 1988 a) and Miramar (Mahfuz, 1988 c). Naturally, 1989 is a prolific year, with 15 translations from the Arabic, and various publishing houses bringing works of Mahfuz onto the market. This is also when Mahfuz is definitively taken on by the major houses.

From this point on, his works will appear simultaneously in specialized publishing houses such as Libertarias and Huerga & Fierro, as well as, more

Edhasa and Plaza y Janés. Círculo de Lectores presents an interesting case by never issuing works of Mahfuz which have not already been published by other houses (i.e. Cuentos ciertos e inciertos, El callejón de los milagros, the Trilogy and Las noches de las mil y una noches). Except in the example of Círculo de Lectores, whose criteria seem to be based on the commercial success of the works with other publishers, and Martínez Roca as mentioned above, it is difficult to specify the factors behind the choices in novels published. The decision appears random and the overall sensation that one comes away with is that the publishing houses, rather than soliciting the translation, merely accepted the suggestions of translators.

Even now, when the initial furor has died down, Mahfuz enjoys continued success in the Spanish market.

Occasionally this success has been fostered by non-literary factors, such as the Silver Shell at the San Sebastián film festival for the film adaptation of Principio y fin (Mahfuz, 1994 a) by Arturo Ripstein, as a result of which Edhasa reissued the translation of this work, originally published by the IHAC in 1988.

Accordingly, we can observe that the work of Mahfuz, after having found its niche in the Spanish market, continues on, collection by collection, publisher by publisher. In 1994, coinciding with the upswing in popularity of the historical novel in Spain, Edhasa makes its first incursion into Arabic

and more, in Alianza, Destino, Círculo de Lectores or Plaza y Janés. After the publication of El espejismo (Mahfuz, 1989 d), this last company would produce translations continuously, passing from collection to collection until landing on a subseries of the “Ave Fénix” collection titled « La Biblioteca de Naguib Mahfuz ».

The market response to each work produced appears to be influenced by the publishing house behind it, as only novels from major houses have been subject to various editions. Additionally, each company has opted for different ways of dealing with the works of Mahfuz. Certain publishers, such as Alianza or Destino, produce sporadic publications, which are always sure to be a commercial success as a result of the Nobel. Others appear to have a clearly defined action plan. This is the case of Martínez Roca, the first publisher to systematically translate the most prestigious works of Mahfuz. In the year in which the Nobel is awarded, Martínez Roca initiates the translation from the English of El callejón de los milagros, and in 1990 completes the translation of the Trilogy from the Arabic, for which it engaged a team of translators from the University of Seville. In the same way, this publishing house produced, also in 1990, Hijos de nuestro barrio (Mahfuz, 1990 a), a work bolstered by its controversial banning. After these most famous works were translated, the remainder would be distributed among companies like Libertarias/Prodhufi,

literature with Rhadopis (Mahfuz, 1994 b), forming a part of the collection “Narrativas Históricas Edhasa”.

In this way, Mahfuz joins the outpouring of historical novels which also carried in its flow La batalla de Tebas (Mahfuz, 1995 a), La maldición de Ra (Mahfuz, 1996 a) and Akhenaton (Mahfuz, 1996 b).

In the last two years, “Egyptomania”, or the passion for all things relating to the Ancient Egypt, has hit the publishing and audiovisual markets.

Following this trend, which like that of the historical novel started in France, Planeta Agostini, one of the most powerful Spanish publishers, has recovered the early historical works of Mahfuz and included them in its recent collection “El Egipto de los Faraones”.

The impact in Spain of Mahfuz receiving the Nobel Prize The effect of a Nobel Prize for Literature on the Spanish publishing market is variable. In comparison with the 33 works of Mahfuz published in Spain since 1988, we find only 15 by Nadine Gordimer, Nobel Prize for literature in 1991, two by Derek Walcott (1992), seven by Kenzaburo Oe (1994), and three by Wislawa Szymborska (1996). The number of works translated can be influenced by the total production of the author, and the success of the translations by the genre dealt with – theater or poetry do not sell as well as narrative works. Nevertheless, it is clear that Mahfuz

stands out from the rest at least as regards the volume of work translated and continuity after the initial commotion following the prize, when publicity and non-stop media coverage ensure success. Subsequently, the strategies of publishers linking the name Mahfuz and certain of his titles to literary trends, such as the historical novel, “Egyptomania” or oriental myths (as in the case of Las noches de las mil y una noches) have, among other factors, managed to keep him and his works on the market.

Judging by the figures, if not for the Jibran Khalil Jibran phenomenon, Mahfuz would be the most translated, published and well-known author among Spanish readers. Even so, and given that not all published works by Jibran were written in Arabic or translated from that language, we can state with no fear of error that Mahfuz represents the greatest activity in Spain on the part of publishers and translators to bring the work of an Arab author to the public eye.

I

n an interview I made with Yusuf Idris many years ago, he made a an important remark: –The best way to understand the Arab personality, how it behaves and how its reflections are made, is to read our literature, especially the modern literature. Because the Arabs are trying to know themselves by writing about themselves. I don’t like the idea of dooming a whole society, like the Arab society as it appears in the western press today.

I certainly agree. Modern Arabic literature is a rich source of knowledge about Arab society in all its variety, from big cities to the countryside and the desert, in all corners of the Arab world. There we meet individual human beings in their natural settings, which is the opposite to the stereotypes you often find in media.

But as a matter of fact, rather little has been translated into Swedish. From the mid-fifties until now not more than

40 works, and not all of them directly from Arabic. Another 15 works by Arab writers writing in French or English, like Tahar Ben Jelloun and Amin Maalouf, could be added, but I will leave them out of the present discussion.

More encouraging though is that 25 of these 40 works have been translated in the last ten years, since Naguib Mahfouz was awarded the Nobel-prize in literature.

a number of languages and introduced world literature, among them some classical works of Taha Husayn and Tawfiq al-Hakim, on his own publishing house, The International Book Club.

But I would say that the translation movement started in the seventies, and had its origins in the Swedish solidarity movements with the third word and the Palestinian cause. It is no coincidence that the first works translated were an anthology of Palestinian poetry and Men in the sun by Ghassan Kanafani, followed by some works of Egyptian writers and a big anthology of Modern Arabic Narrators.

Behind these first efforts you find, once again, a fiery spirit, the only translator at that time, Ingvar Rydberg, and still a prolific translator of Arabic fiction and non-fiction, with achievements like al-Muqaddima by Ibn Khaldun.

These translations whetted the appetite and created and interest for more. In the eighties we had our first translations of Naguib Mahfouz and Yusuf Idris, in addition to the feminist writer Nawal al-Saadawi, and the poets Mahmud Darwish and Adonis.

The real break through came with the Nobel Prize award, at least statistically, with a flux of novels by Naguib Mahfouz. One could perhaps have expected that the award of an Arab writer would have created a wider interest in Arabic literature. But the major publishing houses have been very reluctant to introduce any new writers.

What happened instead, was that a new small publishing house, specialised on Arabic literature, entered the scene. Alhambra, founded by the Lebanese-Swedish Hesham Bahari in 1988, has published more works of Arabic literature than all the established Swedish publishing houses together. Among his titles you find all from al-Muqaddima and Kalila wa-Dimna to contemporary writers like Adonis, Sonallah Ibrahim, Ghalib Halasa, Nabil Naoum, Emile Habibi and Hanan al-Shaykh, along with a number of important works on Arab history and Islam by Jacques Berque, Albert Hourani, Blachère, Mohammed Arkoun and others. However, economic problems have forced him to cut back his literary production in the last years.

Partly as a result of that, the translation movement has come to a stalemate. Since 1994 very few works of Arabic fictions have been translated.

But I wouldn’t put all the blame on the publishers. The problem is more complex. One has to do with translation. From the publishers point of view the costs of translation is a real burden, from a translators point of view the compensation is too small to provide for a living. This makes each translation a more or less idealistic work, which limits the circle of translators and the number of works translated. We are today not more than a handful, but I am positively convinced that we could easily be twice as many, ready to devote much more of our time to translation, if the transla-

Publishing is one thing, and efficient publishing is quite an another. How many of these translating efforts did reach an audience? How many were reprinted, issued in paper-back, serialised or given a major attention by the critics?

It is actually a rather sad chapter, although with some glaring exceptions.

Let me start with Naguib Mahfouz. His first novel translated into Swedish was Zuqa¯ q al-Midaqq. That happened in 1981. It was a very good translation published by an established publishing house. But the result was rather discouraging. Not more than 800 copies were sold, so the publisher saw no reason to carry on.

But one year before Naguib Mahfouz was awarded the Nobel prize in literature a small avant-garde publisher had issued a translation of Tharthara Fawq al-Nı¯l, made by Hesham Bahari and his wife Astrid Ericson.

Since it was the only book by Mahfouz available on the market when the prize was announced it sold 12.000 copies.

In the following weeks and months Bahari got a flying start for his new publishing house Alhambra with translations of both Mirama¯ r and Had.rat al-Muh.taram, although not as flying as he had expected. Mirama¯ r has so far sold 7.200 and Had.rat alMuh.taram 5.600 copies, and there are still thousands of copies in stock. A third title, al-Summa¯ n wa-l-Kharı¯f,

tion of modern Arabic literature into Swedish was backed up as a project.

I will give you a case of point. The minimum pay for literary translations is 1.700 SK per sheet (16 pages).

Small publishers like Alhambra does not pay much more than that. To reach a modest income the translator would have to translate at least six pages a day, in practice much more to give time for troubleshooting and proof-reading. But to my experience, three pages a day is the normal. Big publishing houses would probably accept to pay more, but hard competition among translators from English has frozen the average pay to 2.000 SK (250 USD), and that is what publishers tend to compare with.

The European Cultural Foundation has initiated a programme for the translation, publication and promotion of contemporary Arabic literature in Europe. It has so far been focusing on Arab life stories, essays and literary texts with an autobiographical dimension: Mémoires de la Méditerranée, supporting the publication of four books a year since 1996. But for a small language areas like Sweden that is not enough, or may be a too narrow scope to attract the attention of the publishers. I would suggest a programme focusing on the most prominent writers, and their most excellent works.

There are countless gaps that could be filled in. There are at least forty contemporary Arab writers, translated into other European languages, that are missing in Swedish.

was printed in a much more modest edition. Then other publishing houses took over.

H . ikaya¯ t h.aratina¯ and Rih.lat Ibn Fat. .t u¯ ma, published the following year sold about 4.500 each. But the circulation continued to dwindle over time. The first part of the Trilogy, Bayn al-Qasrayn, in exquisite translation

by Prof. Kerstin Eksell, one of the best renderings of an Arabic work in Swedish, published in 1990, sold 3.800 copies, part three only 2.400.

The circulation of Awla¯ d h. aratina¯ was just 1.600. And his latest novel in Swedish, La¯ yalı¯ Alf Layla, published in 1996, has not sold more than 900 copies. As a result of that the publishing house has once again decided to discontinue the project. To my knowledge there are no other translations in preparation. But thirteen titles is not so bad. However, none of them has sold well enough to be issued in paperback.

This could be contrasted with Nawal al-Saadawi, the best-selling Arab writer on the Swedish book market.

Her five translated works, three novels and two collections of short stories, have sold more than all the works of Mahfouz together, very much due to paperback issues of most of her books and one low priced 25.000 edition, but basically, of course, because she attracted a wide circle of female readers. She has also been taken very well care of by her publisher, invited to Sweden on several occasions, once to the Swedish Book Fair, where she

charmed a huge audience. But her latest book in Swedish, two novellas from the early seventies (from AlKhayt. wa ‘Ayn al-h.aya¯ h), did not score the same success. Circulation stopped at about 2.000 copies. None of her later works has, so far, found favour in the eyes of her publisher, but they are still following her production.

Let me finally return to Alhambra, the major publisher of modern Arabic literature in Sweden. When Bahari started his business he was quite optimistic, and strided ahead to make his favourite writers available in Swedish, as he had done with Mahfouz.

As I mentioned before there is a real shortage of translators from Arabic into Swedish, at least for the minimum rate that he offers. He crossed that problem by a joint venture approach. Some translations were made from English and revised by him. On other occasions he did the translation and had it revised by a Swedish poet or writer.

In the case of Najmat Aghust. us, by Sonallah Ibrahim, we were actually three: I revised a poor translation from French into Swedish sentence by sentence, resorting to the Arabic original, rewriting most of the inner dialogue and the flash-backs, while Hesham and I in co-operation took care of the central chapter, a flowing, suggestive text, without punctuation marks, that brings the first part of the book to its climax. It is, of course, not an ideal solution, but sometimes it may be justified, or even commended. Poetry could be a case in point.

I entered this speech in an optimistic mood. So much more had been published, since Naguib Mahfouz was awarded the Nobel prize in literature.

Conclusions

Statistically it seemed like a break-through and a boom, as if some seeds being planted before, now turned into a flowering mead.

What I found was much more depressing. The two major writers, as regards circulation and readers, Naguib Mahfouz and Nawal al-Saadawi, had passed their heydays, and their publishers had no more plans for the future.

Alhambra’s impressive list of translations of modern Arabic fiction and poetry, turned out a series of non-selling titles.

Nevertheless I am not too pessimistic. There are signs that the Nobel prize to Mahfouz made publishers more alert to Arabic literature.

In 1994 I was asked to write a book on Modern Arabic Prose Literature by the Library Publishing House. It was published in spring 1996. The edition was limited to 2.000 copies, but while writing this I was informed that my modest book had registered 6.000 library loans in 1996 and 1997.

In 1995 an other publishing house published a comprehensive History of Arabic Literature by a Swedish professor, Tryggve Kronholm, where the final chapters are devoted to modern literature. This mirrors a change of direction in Arabic studies in Sweden, with more concern for contemporary literature.

I have also been approached by the editor of ”The Literary Handbook”, the Swedish Who is Who in Literature, and in agreement with him written 21 short presentations of Arab writers, none of them included before, with the

Perhaps I should tell you than Hesham Bahari is not just a Lebanese entrepreneur. He is an ”affecionado”, though very creative. He is extremely well-read, not only in Arabic, and has a discriminating taste, as you may have noticed from the titles I have mentioned. He has also written two novels in Swedish.

But after ten years of assiduous efforts to introduce Arab writers, modernists as well as classics, to the Swedish reading public, he is now on the verge of despair.

And I understand him. Reading the results of many of his most ambitious efforts is truly disheartening, with some of the writers, like Sonallah Ibrahim and Hanan al-Shaykh, selling less than 500 copies. The best selling title turn out to be Adonis’ famous Agha¯ nı¯ Mihya¯ r al-Dimashqı¯ with 900 copies. His ”Essays on Arabic Culture”, translated from French by one of Sweden’s most distinguished translators, sold less than 700 copies, in spite of excellent reviews and a position on the critics’ favourite list.

Jacques Berque’s impressive work Egypt. Imperialism and Revolution, did not even reach 350 copies. But in general, facts sell much better than fiction, and that is how he has so far survived.

exception of Naguib Mahfouz. It will also include a condensed history of Arabic literature on a level with similar introductions to Russian, Chinese and Latin-American literature.

These projects, taken together, indicate that modern Arabic literature has achieved a certain recognition and status in the literary establishment.

They also provide future publishers with easy accessible knowledge on contemporary litterature.

But publishers don’t care for Arabic literature in general. They are looking for individual writers and works that may attract a suffient number of readers to make the business go round, i.e. for an authorship to stake at over a longer period of time, rather than a number of excellent novels by different writers.

Successful undertakings in other European countries could serve as inspiring examples. We have much to learn from each other.

La nueva Escuela de Traductores de Toledo, adscrita a la Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha y dependiente del Patronato Universitario de Toledo, centra sus actividades en el análisis de los flujos de traducción entre lenguas del Mediterráneo. Para el desarrollo de su programa docente y de investigación la Escuela cuenta con el apoyo de la Fundación Europea de la Cultura.

La Escuela de Traductores de Toledo ha organizado, entre otros, los siguientes encuentros y coloquios internacionales: Foro de reflexión sobre la traducción en el Mediterráneo (1994), Pensamiento y circulación de las ideas en el Mediterráneo: el papel de la traducción (1995), Emigración, traducción y culturas (1996), Literatura y traducción en el Mediterráneo occidental: el Magreb y Europa (1996), Orientalismo, exotismo y traducción (1997), Lengua y cultura de origen: niños marroquíes en la escuela española (1997), La traducción de literatura árabe contemporánea en Europa: Diez años después del Nobel de Mahfuz (1998) y Foro de creadores y escritores marroquíes y españoles (1998).

En el campo de la docencia la Escuela de Traductores de Toledo organiza un curso de especialista en traducción árabe-español, así como talleres de traducción especializada (literaria, jurídica, textos de la ONU, etc.).

Además de la actividad docente e investigadora la Escuela ha puesto en marcha dos programas de traducción (Pensamiento y literatura marroquíes y Literatura árabe contemporánea), en colaboración con el Instituto de Cooperación con el Mundo Árabe, que pretenden poner al alcance del lector español obras representativas del pensamiento y la literatura árabes.

La Escuela cuenta con un Centro de Documentación e Investigación sobre la producción intelectual y literaria en el Mediterráneo y una Biblioteca a disposición de los investigadores.

Las investigaciones y contribuciones presentadas en los coloquios y foros organizados por la Escuela son recogidas en la colección Escuela de Traductores de Toledo, editada por el Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha.

La Escuela de Traductores de Toledo, en el marco del Observatorio permanente sobre la traducción del árabe, ha lanzado los Cuadernos de la Escuela de Traductores de Toledo.

Este nuevo espacio de publicación periódica pondrá al alcance de traductores y editores distintas panorámicas sobre literatura traducida e informes sobre lo traducible, además de herramientas de trabajo tales como glosarios, bibliografías, notas de lectura, repertorios de traductores, informes sectoriales por países o géneros, etc.
