PROJECT INFO “ Less Chemical More Quality Life” project is about harmful chemicals mostly used in our daily lives and their effects on nature and to the people. The World is changing at an ever-increasing pace and the people need to survive in a rapidly changing world. Therefore you either keep up or will need to catch up. On one hand technology makes our lives easier, on the other hand many technological processes produce unwanted products and endanger us. Environment, health, life expectancy and social inequlities are linked. Exposure to the harmful chemicals has been associated with many diseases such as: cancer, obesity, impaired neural development, diabetes, asthma, allergies etc. Chemicals in consumer goods may also be of concern when products become waste, as many chemicals migrate easily to the environment and can be found in wild life, ambient air, indoor dust, waste water and sludge. According to UNEP’s data (United Nations Environment Programme) there are 600 different kinds of chemicals which are harmful for living beings. 362 of them are cancerogenic and 211 of them are toxic. We are exposed to many kinds of harmful chemicals in our daily lives. Especially, Paraben, Phthalates and PCB , which are called coctail with 3, are the most important ones which cause many diseases and changes in the environment. Diseases caused by harmful chemicals are increasing. We see that our children and pupils have been infected by that type of diseases since they were child, even since they were in the womb. It is impossible to be oblivious to the environment we live in and to the children in the World. We have also observed that most of our students would rather eat fast food than homemade food. They can not read the product labels properly while purchasing them, and prefer cheap and attractive foods instead of healthy products. This is a common and universal issue. Through cooperative studies and information sharing, the policies and implementations of the partner countries about the chemicals will be compared with each other. The aim of this project is to increase students’ awareness of the effectiveness of harmful chemicals in nature and in our lives. The process of this study will increase interest in science and will change the students’ aspects on chemicals. Inspiring and building a sustainable, healthy future is our main target. Students need to know about diseases and unhealthy food which threaten them. Also they need to learn how to reach a more quality life. Each of us in our decisions and choices have the power to establish sustainable living bridges. So we are provided to take concrete steps by rebuilding bridge between human and nature. To reach our aim, we, as one of the five different European partner countries, have started our Project as an “Awareness Campaign”. It targets the students between ages 1518, their parents, our school teachers, surrounding schools and shopkeepers. Our stakeholders such as relevant minis-
tries, universities, environmental clubs contributed to our project and they will play a great role for dissemination. Coordinator: - Ankara Lisesi – Ankara (Turkey ) Partners: - Rigas 31. Vidusskola-Riga (Latvia) - Altındağ Gazi Anadolu Lisesi-Ankara (Turkey) - IIS Gobetti Marchasini – Casale – Turin (Italy) - Agrupamento de Escolas D. Sancho I – V.N.Famalicão (Portugal) - 5th Lyceum of Trikala – Trikala (Greece) Our project comprises 3 short term exchanges of pupil groups; workshops, presentations, science festival, field trips, experiments, team work, and 3 transnational project meetings; the design of the changes in curriculum, planning, evaluation and the summary of the project. The Project has a facebook account,a web site, whatsapp group and a blog page. During and after the project, information sharing will continue through these social networks so the sustainability of the project will be supplied. In this project, we have gained new knowledge of the ideas and practices in the disciplines of science, understood intructional strategies, observed partner countries’ lifestyles, eating habits, curriculums and how often this subject is mentioned in the lessons, their government’s approach to this topic, how they enrich their teaching methods, we have also discovered new ways to motivate students, increased their consciousness level about harmful chemicals and their effects. Since the project is a student centered one, through this project they have gained; environmental consciousness by identifying simple chemical products which are used in their daily lives and their harmful effects. They have also learned how to live without harmful chemicals and how to change their eating habits. Moreover they improved their knowledge of science, language skills, self confidence and entrepreneurship by strengthening their intercultural cooperations and participation in society. In addition to these impacts, our other stakeholders have also benefited from the results. We have had an opportunity to promote our school and our country in European Union countries. Also we have contributed to the internationalization of our school. Present partnership will open the way for future European cooperations on other topics of common interest.

EVALUATION OF THE FIRST YEAR Dear Respected Partners, This is our second year and our initial activities have been totally completed and our objectives have been mostly reached so far. As you know, the first “Transnational Project Meeting” (M1) took place in Turkey. Then in Greece and Latvia as “L/T/T” activities (C1 and C2) are successfully done. In the scope of LTT activies, students introduced the project topic through slide shows to the teachers and students . In this way we started the “Awareness Campaign”. What are these topics; • Harmful chemicals used in our daily lives such a chemicals at home, at school,in cosmetics, in cleaning agents… etc. • Natural products should be used instead of them. • Global warming, toxic chemicals and carbon footprint. The students demonstrated their work and presented them.Short films were also shot related to our project topic. A pre-test was applied to the students and teachers by all partner schools in the beginning to understand the awareness of the target group about harmful chemicals used in our daily lives. Then the first post-test was applied at the end of the first year to the target group to asses if there was an increase in their awareness level up to that time. The results were evaluated comperatively. In addition to these activities, seminars, conferences, trip to universities, visit to mayor were organized in these meetings. Every partner school introduced and spread our project by doing variable activities related to it; Our Italian partners prepared a blog of our project. We are grateful for their contribution. Our Latvian partners prepared the invitation cards of the Science Festival of our school in Turkey that will take part in May. We extend our gratitudes to them.
10
Our Greek partners designed an experiment which shows how to make a natural product. We thank them as well. Both our Greek and Portugese partners issued our project summary on their local newspapers. That contributed the dissemination of our project. Our Portugese partners will design and prepare an e-book where all studies involve in. It’ ll be ready at the end of this ready. Thanks in advance. Moreover we‘ve formed both a facebook group and whatsapp group. And our project website will be ready in two weeks. We also experienced some problems before and during our project. For example, because of some problems in Turkey, the acceptance of our project was not declared on time. As a result of this, the pre-determined dates of meetings and mobilities have been postponed and the spaces among each meeting have had to be shortened. We were also paid the budget late. I guess our Italian partners experienced similar budget problems as well. During our travel some of us experienced a baggage loss, damage, a passport problem or missing the flight. But we overcame all the difficulties by working in accordance with our partners. We thank all our partners being hardworking, compatible and understanding. We have all been hosted well in every partner country. We are really lucky to have such nice partners as you. Now we are in Italyfor the second “Transnational Project Meeting”(M2). I also want to thank to them for hosting us. Wish to have more great days together. ANKARA LİSESİ GÜLNUR ÖZCAN CHEMISTRY TEACHER
