Precast headwall with dovetail slots and handrail
Althon Precast headwalls are a cost-effective alternative to in-situ concrete structures for connecting pipework discharging into open watercourses. All drainage pipes discharging into open watercourses such as swales, ditches, ponds and rivers should be fitted with an appropriate headwall. Althon headwalls can be factory-fitted with accessories such as flap valves, penstocks, gratings, V-notch weirs, access gates, ladders and steps, and Kee Klamp® or GRP handrails. • Sewerage Sector Guidance (Sewers for Adoption) compliant headwalls Where a headwall is part of a Section 104 Agreement and the sewers are to be adopted once completed by the local water company, the materials used and the installation must comply with Sewerage Sector Guidance. Althon has a range of precast concrete headwalls to comply with these requirements. • Rectangular Sewers for Adoption headwalls (RSFA) Althon rectangular precast concrete headwalls are designed to meet STW headwall requirements. The toe extensions are available in 300 and 500mm thicknesses, each of which is available in three depths. RSFA headwalls are manufactured with three wingwall profiles to suit the gradient of the bank: 1:1, 1:2 or 1:3 slopes. They are typically supplied with a Kee Klamp® handrail to the back wall and horizontal sections of the wingwalls, a galvanised steel access ladder, and a self-closing gate with padlock facility. They can also be supplied with stepped baffle blocks to dissipate water discharging onto the spillway. • Bespoke headwalls Althon designs and manufactures bespoke headwalls to suit site-specific circumstances. These can either be one-piece units or sectional structures where the headwall is very large. They can accommodate gratings, flap valves, trash screens and other security or flow control devices, as well as health and safety essentials such as handrails, walkways and step ladders.

Chieftan chamber with penstock and actuator
Althon offers flow control and flood prevention products that can be used in surface, sewer and process water applications. • Flap valves Flap valves are a simple and effective way to prevent water backflow into a system. For heavy duty applications, 100–1500mm flaps are made with additional features such as welded stiffening ribs. They are manufactured in a combination of HDPE/316 stainless steel meaning they are lightweight and high in strength. They are easy to install, responsive and reliable. Althon can also supply cast iron flap valves. • Penstocks HDPE penstocks are a simple and effective way to isolate and regulate water and levels. Designs have been developed to accommodate the majority of situations where a penstock is required. They are suitable for sealing pressures of 5mWC as standard, require virtually no maintenance and are fast, safe and easy to install. • Stop logs Stop logs are used for the isolation and containment of water and controlling water levels. Lightweight and corrosion-resistant, they are suitable for applications where standard single-piece stop gates would be too heavy to lift. Stop logs are manufactured using the latest materials combined with aluminium or stainless steel, and can be provided fitted to precast headwalls or as standalone products with different mounting arrangements. • WaStop Valves WaStop valves can be installed inline between two pipes to prevent backflow or, more typically, in a manhole. They are made from 316 stainless steel or PVC tube and incorporate a cone-shaped membrane. The membrane allows water flow to pass in the desired direction but when backflow occurs the membrane fills and seals the pipe. As the WaStop does not rely on gravity to close the membrane it does not need to be fitted against a vertical headwall. They are suitable for water pressures up to 8mWC.

Bespoke trash screen
Althon manufactures a comprehensive range of trash screens, gratings and outfall safety grilles. The product range includes: Sewerage Sector Guidance compliant gratings, pipe-mounted gratings, cage, cranked and sloped trash screens, raked trash screens and weed screens. Gratings and trash screens are available in galvanised steel or stainless steel and can be pre-fitted to Althon precast headwall units, in-situ headwalls or supplied as standalone items. In addition, Althon can quote for bespoke gratings. • Outfall safety grilles Althon outfall and safety grilles are compliant with Sewerage Sector Guidance. The Sewers for Adoption and Sewers for Scotland guidelines for gratings and trash screens call for an outfall safety grille to be fitted to any headwall with a pipe opening of 350mm or greater. The guidelines specify that the grille must be a minimum of 270mm wider than the outside diameter of the pipe, have bars at 100mm spacing, be hinged and have a padlock facility. Standard gratings and trash screens are hot dip galvanised to BS EN 1461 but are available in stainless steel if required. • Sloped trash screens Althon sloped trash screens are designed to fit to precast, in-situ or brick headwalls and outfalls. They reduce the amount of trash, litter and natural debris entering pipework and culverts whilst also preventing unauthorised access and blockages. Althon can manufacture the screens at either 45 or 60 degrees with and without sides. Screens can also be designed and manufactured to customer specifications. • Vermin grilles Vermin grilles are designed to prevent rodents and other vermin entering connecting pipework. They are designed to be fitted to any flat surface or to an Althon precast concrete headwall. In addition, Althon supplies grilles for mounting onto any new or existing pipework, and PN16 flanged vermin grilles which are designed to fit between two flanged pipes or fittings, or at the end of a flanged pipe run.

ACO Water Management recognises that protection of the environment is a crucial part of an integrated approach to modern surface water management and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS). Contamination of ground water and watercourses from hydrocarbons (petrol, diesel and engine oil) carried by surface water run-off poses serious threats to the environment. Two advanced systems are manufactured to address these challenges. • Rainwater and surface water run-off filtration systems ACO QuadraCeptor is a specialist rainwater and surface water run-off filtration system for the removal of sediment and harmful pollutants. ACO QuadraCeptor significantly improves water quality, removing pollutants before infiltration into the soil or discharge into water courses. • Bypass and full retention oil separators ACO Q-Ceptor oil separators are an innovative range of bypass and full retention separators. The high-performance systems are fully compliant with BS EN 858:2002 parts 1 and 2 and exceed the requirements of the Environment Agency’s PPG 3 guidelines. ACO Q-Ceptors are available in a range of chamber sizes and flow rates for use in car parks, maintenance areas, and industrial and residential applications. Manufactured from polyethylene, the innovative single chamber design of the ACO Q-Ceptor is very compact and robust offering significant advantages in installation and handling costs over traditional GRP products. ACO Q-Ceptors are available in two performance classes as specified by BS EN 858-1:2002. Both Class 1 and Class 2 ACO Q-Ceptors are available as bypass or full retention separators. ACO Q-Brake vortex flow control
ACO Water Management is an expert in water engineering, providing design solutions for stormwater management. ACO’s approach to SuDS controls rainwater distribution from when it hits the ground until it re-enters the natural water environment, minimising environmental impact and maximising sustainability. ACO Water Management solutions address the four stages of Effective Water Management: Collect, Clean, Hold, Release. • Surface water infiltration and storage ACO StormBrixx is a unique and patented plastic geocellular stormwater management system for attenuation and soakaway (infiltration) usage. Its versatile design allows the system to be used in configurations and applications across all construction environments as a standalone solution or as part of an integrated sustainable urban drainage (SuDS) scheme. The patented brickbonding and cross bonding feature provides a strong, long-term installation and also helps to improve the construction speed of the tank. Delivery, site logistics and installation are all significantly simplified, as a result of the system’s ‘stackable’ design. The range consists of StormBrixx SD (standardduty) and StormBrixx HD (heavy-duty) systems. The open cell structure for both systems allows easy access for CCTV and jetting equipment from just a few access points. • Flow control and regulation ACO Q-Brake Vortex is a horizontal vortex flow control system designed to regulate stormwater flows of 2–100 litres per second. ACO Q-Plate regulates stormwater flows where a vortex flow control is not the most effective solution, or where flows are greater than 100 l/s. Both systems can be used in conjunction with retention and attenuation systems, such as ACO StormBrixx, as an integrated sustainable urban drainage (SuDS) scheme.

Instead of heavily treated, mains-supplied drinking water, non-potable water supplies such as collected rainwater and grey water can be used for flushing toilets, washing cars or irrigating gardens. • Grey water recycling SDS’s innovative grey water treatment system makes it simpler and more cost-effective for developments such as smaller hotels, residential and commercial buildings to operate lowmaintenance grey water recycling. The all-in-one, pre-fabricated, skid-mounted system can also be easily retrofitted into existing buildings where space is at a premium. • Rainwater harvesting SDS’s Intellistorm® system replaces a traditional water butt with an intelligent storage tank which analyses weather forecasting information in order to predict rainfall. Whilst it is programmed to maximise the volume of captured rainwater for reuse, the system discharges to the sewer network sufficient of the tank’s contents to accommodate the forecasted rainfall.

StableTRUCK Grasspave – close-up detail
StableGRASS gravel reinforcing grids and StableTRUCK Grasspave heavy-duty grass pavers provide naturally permeable paving options. The products cover all applications from simple green pedestrian and light vehicle access to heavier duty surfaces for commercial and constant use. • StableGRASS grass grids StableGRASS offers two panel sizes in both 38 and 50mm depths. Available in Green and Black as standard with Buff Dolomite produced to order, the range is flexible, covering almost all potential applications. All grids are fully interlocking, very robust and secure, whilst the cell design creates free space for root development. StableGRASS MAXI is the flagship grid. Large dimensional panels of 1.2x0.8m can be laid in a brick bond pattern, giving enhanced stability and enabling significant productivity gains on larger installations. Standard light to medium use will require the 38mm depth, whilst more regular vehicular requirements need 50mm. StableGRASS 38 and StableGRASS 50 are supplied in more traditional 50x50cm panels, where that is a preferred option. Compressive load resistance is similar to StableGRASS MAXI. • StableTRUCK grass pavers StableTRUCK Grasspave is a heavy-duty paver for use with grass or granular fill. It is an economic and secure paving option for access, parking and storage by commercial vehicles, coaches, maintenance plant and fork lift service yards. Other applications include grass verges, laybys, passing places and hard standings. Two versions are available: – Grooved top surface to give audible indication of vehicle transit. – Flat top surface for comfortable pedestrian access. Manufactured incorporating specially selected and graded recycled raw material, StableTRUCK has excellent environmental and sustainability characteristics. Material is fully recyclable at end of life. Free-draining permeability can be achieved by the use of suitable granular material, potentially forming part of a fully permeable paved structure. The pavers are produced as interconnecting tiles of 60x40x10cm-deep on a cell matrix of 12cm; 12cm-deep tiles are available on special order. Compressive load resistance has been independently tested, with results confirming a capability of +/- 500 T/m2 when filled (test certification available on request).

HRL has been producing reinforcing grids for gravel paving for 20 years, and continually improves and develops its products. The range has evolved to cover all applications from pedestrian-only pathways to heavier duty, constant use areas. Products are designed to prevent rutting, sinking and migration of gravel, whilst adding loadbearing reinforcement to the pavement construction. Being simple and very fast to install makes the paving extremely cost-effective. Systems provide a naturally permeable paving surface, largely eliminating the water run-off created by hard surfaces, reducing demand of surface water drainage capacity, adding to environmentally sustainable credentials. Grids are produced and supplied in 1.2x0.8m panels and have a robust weed-suppressant membrane attached to the base.
