Exclusive UK-bred varieties
Germinal services the professional amenity sector with high-performance seed, supplying exclusive varieties to greenkeepers, turf growers, ground staff, landscape contractors, architects, golf course constructors, agronomists and ecologists. Covering all of Great Britain, the Germinal Amenity team offers technical support, guidance on best practice and sustainable management of environments. • Wild flora mixtures Germinal offers two ranges of wildflower seeds. Urban Meadows (WF and WFG) mixtures are native and non-native species for urban and suburban areas where the main requirement is for aesthetically appealing floral displays which also benefit bees and other pollinators. Regional Environmental (RE) mixtures are for use where only UK-native species are essential to preserve the natural habitat and indigenous wildlife populations. • Urban meadow mixtures Germinal’s general landscaping range contains 100% wildflower (WF) and ready-to-sow wildflower and complementary grass blends (WFG). These mixtures are suitable for use across a range of different soil types and aspects and are ideal for producing aesthetically attractive and ecologically valuable meadow habitats. A landscape architect would select these mixtures for use in urban or suburban settings such as new housing estates and business or retail park developments. Unlike ‘true meadow’ mixtures – which do not exhibit a vibrant sea of floral colours – Germinal’s WF and WFG mixtures (which include selected non-native and ‘garden’ species) produce a more attractive and wider array of colours that is more in keeping with what the public believes a wildflower meadow should look like. Wildflower meadows are therefore more likely to be maintained instead of being undervalued, neglected, or being ‘tidied’ back to a mown area of lawn and losing any environmental benefit. By enhancing the composition and appearance of its WF range, Germinal believes the wildflowers it produces will survive for longer, thereby providing an enriched environment for bees pollinators, birds and mammals. • Regional Environmental (RE) mixtures Where the inclusion of only UK native species is essential, Germinal’s Regional Environmental (RE) mixtures are formulated according to the National Vegetation Classification (NVC) survey. These ‘true meadow’ mixtures are fully complementary to their region’s natural habitat and native wildlife populations, thereby helping to preserve the heritage of natural grass and floral habitats.

Lindum Wildflower – RHS Chelsea Flower Show
Lindum Wildflower is a balanced mixture of wildflowers, herbs and perennials that produce a biodiverse and colourful visual spectacle. The mix contains 27 species of wildflowers and herbs including Oxeye Daisy, Lady’s Bedstraw, Cat’s Ear, Wild Majoram, Thyme and Chives. The result is a vibrant and dynamic display, grown in a 100% plastic-free biodegradable mat, to provide an instant wildflower area. Lindum Wildflower creates a diverse habitat and rich nectar source for pollinating insects, including butterflies, moths, hoverflies, honey bees and bumblebees. The wildflowers in the mixture have been selected for their nectar-producing properties and attractiveness to pollinators, especially bees. The plants in flower can vary during the season and from year to year as the mixture adapts to the soil type, rainfall and temperature. The soil in which the plants are established determines the type of wildflowers that will flourish. Lindum provides the ideal pre-grown solution for general landscaping, specialist landscaping and green roofs, as wildflowers are notoriously difficult to establish when grown from seed. • Bespoke mixtures Special mixtures to suit individual soil types can be grown to order for large-scale areas.

Root Barrier C3 protects structures and services from tree root damage and controls the spread of invasive plant species such as Japanese knotweed, giant hogweed, mares tail and bamboo. Typical applications include tree pits, foundations and service channels.
Properties Made from triple coated and twin reinforced polyethylene, Root Barrier C3 offers the strength and durability of a ground engineering fabric and the puncture resistance of a geomembrane. The fabric conforms to all the criteria required by the Environment Agency code of practice and offers a cost-effective and quick alternative to the excavation and transportation off site of soil infested with invasive weeds. Root Barrier C3 has a life expectancy of over 50 years, which is an important recommended requirement by the Environment Agency because the Japanese knotweed rhizome can remain dormant for at least 20 years. The fabric is UV stabilised and highly resistant to natural acids, alkalis, bacteria and fungi.

The health of nearly all plants is dependent on their symbiotic relationship with soil biology. Ruskins applies soil biology in bespoke formulations to new and existing areas planted with trees, shrubs or grasses to improve soil health, carbon storage, biodiversity and drainage. • Helping new planting establish successfully Newly planted trees, shrubs and grassed areas treated with soil biology applied by Ruskins establish quicker, require less aftercare, show improved resilience, and grow stronger. • Improving soil biology for stressed plants In addition, soil biology applied to help stressed trees, shrubs and grass can greatly help their recovery. This is often undertaken in conjunction with Ruskins’ decompaction/aerating services. • Bespoke formulations Ruskin’s bespoke compost tea drenches include all the good parts (and none of the bad) of the soil food web apart from worms and insects, which will naturally be attracted to the improved soil. • Carbon storage and biodiversity A healthy soil will have soil biology that enables the storage of carbon, creates a much higher level of biodiversity, and improves drainage. Measurements of improvements in carbon storage and biodiversity can be supplied by Ruskins on request.

Green Grid’s RootBridge is designed to protect tree root systems where new developments such as walkways, steps and car parking areas are planned close to existing trees. With a low structure height from 75mm, it requires minimal excavation and can easily be retrofitted. Once installed, it protects the existing root range from harmful pressures which can lead to soil compaction, loss of aeration, drainage problems and, ultimately, the death of the tree. The system meets both local authority demands for no-dig tree root protection and engineers’ demands for a reliable solution.

An ISO 9001:2015 accredited company, Platipus® Anchors Ltd designs and manufactures tree anchoring and irrigation systems for the landscape industry. Platipus invented the first tree anchoring system, with no unsightly stakes or guy wires, more than 40 years ago. Due to continuous innovation, the company has developed a range of solutions for all planting situations with trees up to 20m high. It can also provide permanent tree anchoring systems using stainless steel accessories. • Rootball fixing system – Plati-Mat® The Platipus® rootball fixing system, including Plati-Mat®, is a popular method of securing rootballed, containerised and airpot-grown semimature trees. Its benefits include ease and speed of installation, a lack of unsightly timber stakes, more secure fixing and better root establishment. The system naturally degrades after 3–5 years to allow unrestricted root growth. • D-MAN® system – Plati-Mat® The award-winning D-MAN® is a strong, compact and lightweight system primarily designed to replace the traditional deadman where there are buried services or shallow soils. D-MAN® can be used individually or in multiples and units simply lock/unlock together. It has a distinctive letterbox style wire tendon anchor point and a unique cup for water storage. Units are easily stackable for building up large planting areas and can be used to protect roof planting from damage. D-MAN® is made from recyclable plastic and is completely nestable, allowing for compact transportation. • Piddler® tree irrigation system Drought stress remains one of the biggest contributors to high mortality rates of transplanted trees in the first few years of establishment. Piddler® is a special membrane that delivers water and air directly to a tree’s rootzone, helping to ensure tree growth and sustainability. Piddler® supplies water evenly all around the rootball, drenching the soil laterally. Unlike traditional systems, Piddler® reduces waste and keeps water from evaporating, running off and escaping in to the bottom of the tree pit. Quick to assemble and tailor to size, it is used for all rootball diameters. Its lightweight design also allows significant freight cost savings over traditional pipe systems. • Traditional deadman system Developed to satisfy the requirements of a specialist market, the deadman system has enabled Platipus to offer effective solutions for planting in challenging urban environments. The systems use kerbstones, sleepers or mesh as anchor points and providing that the soil placed on top has been well compacted before placing the tree in the pit, the systems offer an effective method of securing rootball trees up to 20m high. D-MAN® as an award-winning alternative.

Ruskins is expert at moving large trees, shrubs and established hedges. Customers include local authorities, golf courses, developers, horticultural organisations and private individuals. • Tree moving Using tree spades to plant large trees is cost effective. Ruskins has operated a fleet of tree spades since 1985, including the biggest in the UK – the Stocker 8 Tree Spade – which can transplant trees up to 20cm trunk diameter. Trees that are too large to be moved by tree spades can still be moved using a rootball, frame and crane technique. With larger trees, root preparation in advance of transplanting is vital. With all transplanted specimens aftercare is required until root systems are re-established. • Hedge moving Hedges can be moved without reduction in height, retaining ecological and visual value.
Operations Work is undertaken throughout the UK. All staff are CSCS and NRWSA accredited and work in established teams. When space is limited on site, Ruskins can transplant specimens off-site, store and care for specimens, and return to plant them when the site is ready. The optimum time to transplant is from October to March.

• Deep aeration and boosting of soils Aeration and boosting of soils is carried out using a 1m-deep soil probe that blasts compressed air, causing fractures in the soil, which are kept open using Terramol. This decompacts the soil and allows soil ameliorants such as biochar and soil biology into the fissures. Soil biology will symbiotically boost a stressed tree and increase its resilience. • Air spade services Tree root investigation services are undertaken using air spades, which remove soil from around the roots without damaging them. This enables: - The presence and importance of roots to be determined. - Service trenches to be dug through the root systems of protected trees. - Locations to be found for piles that avoid roots. - Soil decompaction and root aeration. - Removal of soil placed above root systems. - Service locations to be identified. - Roots to be pruned in accordance with good arboricultural practice. - Root health checks.
