• Self-binding gravel An easy-to-lay alternative to traditional materials such as flags, paving, macadam or concrete. The gravel binds together when rolled to provide a self-compacted surface which is firmer underfoot than conventional loose aggregate. Self-binding gravel is suited to a wide spectrum of applications, including domestic driveways, golf courses and rural footpaths.

• Rubber-gravel mix Combines the flexibility of rubber with the strength, appeal and durability of natural stone aggregate. Rubber-gravel mix can be used as a base underneath products like wet pour, artificial grass or bound gravel, or as a stand-alone surface.

Porous and slip resistant, rubber-gravel mix allows for sustainable drainage in cities, towns and the countryside.

Whispercast is a proprietary system for the controlled production of in-situ exposed aggregate pavement finishes. As part of the COLCHEM (Colours and Chemicals for Concrete) division of Hardscape Resourcing Limited, the concept aims to provide everything contractors and designers might need to achieve visually attractive and durable in-situ concrete hardstanding.

At the core of the system is the Hebau range of self-neutralising top surface retarders which ensure a pre-determined depth of aggregate reveal. Almost as important as consistent depth of aggregate exposure is the protection of the surface after exposure. Deeply penetrating dirt and stain-resistant protective coatings form part of the system, enabling low maintenance and long-term durability of the finish.

There are two major techniques involved in the production of Whispercast: Whispercast Rustique and Whispercast Surface Seeding.

• Whispercast Rustique Whispercast Rustique involves exposure of the aggregate within the concrete. Controlling aggregate distribution within the mix is critical for consistent appearance at the surface and the means to achieve this is built into the system.

• Whispercast Surface Seeding Whispercast Surface Seeding involves broadcasting of decorative aggregate into the concrete surface, before exposure. This is usually required where the decorative aggregate selected is not generic, so on economic grounds this offers the potential for a much wider selection of aggregate finish options.

Colour addition to in-situ concrete provides an aesthetic improvement of hardstanding at a modest cost. Typical hard landscape surfaces where this is used include commercial pavements or roadways, and residential areas.

HRL Colchem colour additives, decorative stains and surface etching treatments provide a wide portfolio of affordable, decorative options for these purposes.

• Colchem Classic Landscape Colour Colchem Classic Landscape Colour is a pre-dosed UV-resistant colour addition system for readymixed and precast concrete, which ensures consistency and non-fading results. Eight standard classic landscape shades are produced, creating a warm coloured background to smooth-trowelled, broom-lined, sponge-textured or any traditional concrete finishes.

The same system is used as a co-ordinated matrix tint for exposed aggregate pavement.

• Colchem MicroETCH Colchem MicroETCH is a combination of micro retarders and etching gels producing a slipresistant decorative surface which is granular in appearance. Surfaces are etched to a depth of 0.50–1.0mm, slightly exposing the underlying aggregate, adding light and shade to the colour conditioned concrete slab.

Colchem Sienna is a finishing stain which reacts with free lime in concrete surfaces to create a permanent, variegated, natural mineral-coloured effect. There are eight standard shades, which can be applied to grey, white or coloured concrete, extending the colour palette accordingly.

• Colchem Sorrento penetrating stains Colchem Sorrento is a penetrating stain available in a wide selection of colours, including an economic means of adding green and blue shades onto concrete. Stocked in eight standard colours (with a further 16 shades available to order), they are designed to be semi-translucent and offer a unique choice of coloured effects, which can range from subtle to striking.

• Colorfresh and Colortec MAX Colorfresh Intensiv, Colorfresh Effect and Colortec MAX are compatible ranges of three penetrating protective coatings, available in satin sheen, matt, ‘wet’ look or invisible finishes. The stains all provide additional UV protection and dirt/staining resistance to concrete, which helps it to maintain its appearance and reduce maintenance demands.

The protective coating range also includes Prowall 11, a sacrificial, anti-graffiti coating for applications where this added protection might be considered necessary.
